Solihull Sixth Form College offers more than just your academic studies. Our enrichments not only give you the chance to do something completely different, they also help you broaden your skills, knowledge and experience, giving you the edge when applying for higher education courses, apprenticeships or employment.
Our programme is designed to enrich your studies with options suited to your interests and aspirations, whilst helping you get the most out of your time with us. We have created a dedicated enrichment slot on the timetable to allow you to participate in the programme.
So varied is our programme of enrichments, that there is something for everyone to enjoy and there is a lot to be gained by adding an enrichment to your programme of study. From the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award to Student Council or Kick Start to Drive to the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), these are just some of the brilliant opportunities on offer.

Choosing Your Enrichments
When deciding which enrichments you want to pursue, make sure you know how to sign up and whether it’s possible to combine the enrichment with other options. Due to time commitments and timetabling, some options need to be chosen in isolation, meaning you cannot do more than one enrichment. These are highlighted with a pink cross in the second column of the table below
The purple column above refers to skills that these enrichments can help you develop that can be useful for the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme: VVolunteering; P - Physical, S - Skills, E - Expedition. See pages 5 and 6 for more information.

What Academic Enrichment options do we offer?
We offer three fantastic opportunities, all of which can be taken alongside a second enrichment, in the enrichment slot.
• The Extended Project Qualification
• Core Maths (often called Mathematical Studies)
• Sustainability Level 3 Certificate
What are academic enrichments and why are they different to other enrichment opportunities at college?
Successfully completing one of our academic enrichments will lead to a qualification and therefore UCAS points to support your university application or routes into apprenticeships and employment.
Many universities will offer reduced entry criteria to students who successfully complete the EPQ or Core Maths.
You will need to commit more of your time to an academic enrichment because they all lead to a qualification. Academic enrichments will be embedded within your timetable.
You are able to develop a wider range of skills, knowledge and experience through an academic enrichment than our other enrichment options.

Introduction to the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award
Solihull Sixth Form College is very pleased to be offering our students the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award as part of our enrichment programme. The DofE is an internationally recognised award that has now been running for over 70 years. It offers individual achievements that differ from person to person depending on their goals by allowing young people to set themselves new challenges and develop life skills outside of a classroom environment.
Reasons to participate in the DofE award
By participating in the DofE Award you will develop key skills of; goal setting, problem solving, self-discipline, independence, empathy and teamwork while building confidence and meeting new people, some of whom may become lifelong friends. Universities and employers also value the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and the skills that are gained.
Structure of the DofE awards
There are three levels of award available; Bronze Silver and Gold, with increasing levels of challenge and commitment as you progress through the levels. Each level comprises four sections: Volunteering, Physical, Skills and Adventurous Journey, with an additional residential section for the Gold award. Bronze: We run the whole of this award level including a mandatory 24hr training event and the Qualifying expedition. Silver: We run the whole of this award level including the mandatory practice expedition and the Qualifying expedition.
Gold: We are able to support participants who wish to complete this level of the DofE award; however, we do not currently run the expedition section ourselves. We can support you with registration, selecting suitable activities and record keeping for the evidence for each section including identifying a suitable residential and adventurous journey opportunities for you.
You decide on the structure of your programme
Activities within the DofE programme can be matched with those you are already doing or you can take this opportunity to try new activities and expand your skills base. For example, activities like playing football, cycling, learning an instrument or language, cooking, collecting, volunteering for a local charity and being a member of the Student Council could all be used as evidence towards your DofE award. Many of the other enrichment options within this guide are suitable activities to use as evidence of completion of the sections of the awards. Basketball Performance Academy with City of Birmingham Rockets
Enrichment Overview
The Basketball Academy is a high-performance squad playing in National Level competition. Training takes place within the College timetable and in sessions after the college day has finished. The Academy team is coached by very experienced staff from the City of Birmingham Rockets, who provide opportunities for students to train and play within their U18 structure outside of the college system. Fixtures are played in the College Basketball League and take place on Wednesday afternoons. Why choose this enrichment?
This enrichment gives you the opportunity to develop yourself physically, socially and emotionally. You will develop your teamwork and communication skills along with the organisation needed to balance training, game preparation and academic work.
How long will the enrichment last?
The commitment to the Basketball Academy is for the full year as training for this enrichment continues into the summer term. How much time a week will it involve?
The commitment is for a minimum of 14 hours per week, which is a mixture of training and game time. What will it cost?
There are no costs to participate, however there may be options to purchase teamwear within the year.
Who can sign up?
The Basketball Academy is aimed at those with previous experience of playing within an organised league and club environment. However, those students demonstrating the potential to develop to the levels required within the trials will be offered a place within the training squad. The Academy is a male performance sport; however females can attend sessions within the Sport for Leisure enrichment programme, which are led by Birmingham Rockets Coaches. How do I sign up?
Trials take place following enrolment and attendance is compulsory for those students wishing to be selected. It is not possible to do another enrichment alongside this.
Core Maths
Enrichment Overview
Core Maths is a Level 3 qualification - so taking it is equivalent in time to studying 4 A levels in Year 12. It is designed to prepare students for the mathematical demands of study, work and life. The course content includes tax and national insurance, Fermi estimation, the normal distribution, confidence intervals, percentages, critical analysis of graphs, correlation and data analysis. There is a focus on applying the mathematics to real life contexts. This content is aimed at building students’ confidence with mathematical ideas and applications in their professional and academic life.
Why choose this enrichment?
The course has been designed to include mathematics content that closely aligns with other subjects, most notably A level Psychology, Sociology, Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Geology, Business Studies, Accounting and Economics. Students enrolling on BTEC Applied Science and BTEC IT will also find the skills learned highly applicable to supporting their course. It would also be useful for students wishing to pursue careers in teaching or healthcare (such as nursing). The qualification is equivalent to an AS level in terms of UCAS points.
How long will the enrichment last?
One year, over the course of Year 12. In May and June, there are two external 90-minute assessment papers.
Core Maths lessons are enjoyable and interesting. I always look forward to Core Maths lessons. The teacher is super friendly, nice, funny and always helps me whenever I need extra support.

How much time a week will it involve?
3 lessons per week totalling 4.5 hours. Intervention sessions may extend this to 5 hours in certain weeks. Students will also need to complete some homework and independent study.
What will it cost?
Students will need a scientific calculator (details at enrolment), which can be hired for a refundable deposit.
Who can sign up?
Interested students should have achieved a grade 5 or above at GCSE Mathematics and must not be studying A level Mathematics or A level Statistics as one of their 3 (or 4) A level choices.
How do I sign up?
At enrolment. Students may also sign up to another enrichment alongside Core Maths.
Core Maths is a good enrichment to choose if you wish to have experience for a wide variety of employment options and can help you if you are doing subjects like Sciences and Psychology. Ask for help whenever you get stuck on something you don’t fully understand.
Student Tom Rockingham
If you take Core Maths you will learn about maths in the real world outside of exams such as inflation, mortgages and taxes. I had a pleasant experience in Core Maths where I learnt some financial topics as well as Fermi estimations.

Creative Writing
Enrichment Overview
This enrichment offers a workshop-style approach to improving and exercising your creative writing talents. There will be opportunities to enter creative writing competitions, hear from visiting speakers and publish your work.
Why choose this enrichment?
This course is for fun and to allow you to indulge your creativity and develop your writing skills in a supportive group environment.
How long will the enrichment last? All of Year 12.
How much time a week will it involve? One lesson.
What will it cost? No cost.
Who can sign up?
Any student, whatever your programme of study.
How do I sign up?
At enrolment. It is not possible to do another enrichment alongside this.
Cricket
Enrichment Overview
The Cricket team is a summer activity which provides the opportunity for students to play within an organised College T20 league.
Why choose this enrichment?
This enrichment gives you the opportunity to develop yourself physically, socially and emotionally. You will develop your teamwork and communication skills along with the organisation needed to balance training, game preparation and academic work.
How long will the enrichment last?
The enrichment takes place within the summer term, although there is a yearly indoor competition in November.
How much time a week will it involve?
The commitment is for 5 hours per week during the summer term which is a mixture of training and game time. Fixtures are played in the Association of Colleges T20 League and Birmingham County Cup
What will it cost?
There are no costs to participate, however players will need appropriate cricket footwear and white trousers when games are played (a College top is provided).
Who can sign up?
The Cricket team is aimed at female and male players with previous experience of playing within an organised league and club environment. However, those students demonstrating the potential to develop to the levels required within the trials will be offered a place within the training squad.
How do I sign up?
Trials take place following enrolment and attendance is compulsory for those students wishing to be selected. You can join an autumn/spring sport alongside cricket. It is not possible to do another enrichment alongside this.
Debating Society
Enrichment Overview
If you want to develop your public speaking, oracy and reasoning skills, the Debating Society could be the enrichment for you. You will get the opportunity to meet once a week with like-minded learners to debate a range of topical issues in informal and more formal style debates. There may be the chance to work towards participation in the ESU (English Speaking Union) Mace Debate competition. This is the oldest and largest debating competition for schools, aimed at students aged 11 – 18, which pits students against teams from other schools both regionally and nationally.
Why choose this enrichment?
The ability to form logical and well-reasoned arguments is a skill that universities and employers greatly value. This enrichment will help you think critically and analytically and the need to speak publicly will help you to develop your confidence. Communication and team-working skills will also be boosted by being involved in this enrichment and it is an impressive addition to any CV or university application. It is of particular benefit to students wanting to progress onto careers related to Law, Politics and Business Management.
How long will the enrichment last?
This is a year-long commitment. How much time a week will it involve?
Meetings will take place once a week, with some after-College commitments possible when ESU Mace competition is taking place.
What will it cost?
There may be some transport costs for ESU Mace competition.
Who can sign up?
This enrichment is open to any student with a desire to get involved in discussion and debate.

Duke of Edinburgh’s Bronze & Silver Awards
Enrichment Overview
The DofE is an internationally recognised award favoured by employers and universities alike. By participating in the DofE Award you will develop key skills of confidence, dedication and commitment. You can design your own DofE programme. Activities within the DofE programme can be matched with those you are already doing. For example, activities like playing football, learning an instrument or being a member of the Student Council can be used as evidence towards the DofE bronze award. Most enrichment options within this guide can be used as a skill evidence for the bronze and silver awards. See page 7 for more information about how your enrichment can support a DofE award.
Why choose this enrichment?
Sign up to the DofE programme if you want to explore personal challenges and develop personal skills including; time management, problem solving and initiative. It will also improve your interpersonal skills and give you friendships and memories for life! You really get out of the award what you put into it.
How long will the enrichment last?
For participants at Bronze and Silver Level we meet once a week to train for aspects of the adventurous journey during year 12, these meetings will count towards your college attendance. Outside of these meetings you will spend 3-4 hours a week collecting evidence towards the other 3 strands of the award if you wish to collect all of the evidence concurrently, or less time per week for longer if you want to collect evidence for each strand consecutively. In addition to the weekly meetings there are 2 overnight trips per level.
• Bronze training event - 24 hours including 1 night camping
• Bronze Qualifying expedition - 2 days walking, 1 night camping
• Silver Practice Expedition - 48 hours including 2 days walking and 2 nights camping
• Silver Qualifying expedition - 3 days walking, 2 nights camping
For participants at Gold level and students in year 13 we run drop in support sessions for assisting with programme planning and completion. You can continue to work towards the award after you have left college up to the age of 25.
How much time a week will it involve?
1 – 2 hours per week.
What will it cost?
• Bronze award: £46.50 (including £36 registration with the awarding body and 2 sets of expedition camp fees (does not include food or transport from the expedition end point which is typically by means of public transport)
• Silver award: £96.00 (including £36.00 registration with the awarding body and 2 sets of expedition camp fees (does not include food or transport to/from the expedition start /end points which is typically by means of public transport)
• Gold Award: £40.00 this covers the fee for registration with the awarding body only – costs for expeditions and residentials are variable and paid directly to those providers
Who can sign up?
All Year 12 students are able to apply for a place on the DofE awards enrichment. If students have not previously been enrolled on the award we would recommend that they join us on Bronze level. Students who have previously been enrolled on the award elsewhere, maybe at school or with a youth organisation, can transfer their registration to us and continue with an incomplete level or start on the next level of challenge. If continuing on the same level there is no fee to transfer the current registration to us.
How do I sign up?
Applications for participants new to DofE awards and for transfers from previous organisations will open at enrolment and close at the end of September 2026. It is not only possible, but often desirable, that you do another complementary enrichment that can be used towards the Duke of Edinburgh Award.
Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)
Enrichment Overview
The Extended Project is a stand-alone qualification that is equivalent to an AS level, but with an A* also achievable. It aims to develop students beyond their existing study programme by giving them the freedom to complete a project on an area of personal interest or benefit, while developing project management skills along the way.
Learners will have the freedom to choose the theme for their project - perhaps do it on a subject they are studying or an area of personal interest. The practicalities of completing the work are then discussed with a teacher who is experienced in facilitating the EPQ.
Students will be asked to produce an outcome that can take a variety of formats. They can:
• Create an artefact or design
• Organise an event
• Put on a performance of some kind.
Why choose this enrichment?
The EPQ has enormous benefits to the students that complete one:
• It encourages students to think and perform independently, allowing them to manage a longer-scale project from start to finish.
• It gets them ready for university or employment, being designed to develop skills in decision making, problem solving, planning, researching and evaluating.
• It can give them a competitive edge with university and employer applications.
• It can increase confidence and time management.
How long will the enrichment last?
September – completed in Year 12
How much time a week will it involve? One lesson.
What will it cost?
A folder or scrapbook in which to submit the completed project. Who can sign up? All students.

Football
Enrichment Overview
Football is an outdoor activity which provides the opportunity for students to play within an organised College football league and train on a weekly basis. Why choose this enrichment?
This enrichment gives you the opportunity to develop yourself physically, socially and emotionally. You will develop your teamwork and communication skills along with the organisation needed to balance training, game preparation and academic work.
How long will the enrichment last?
The enrichment takes place between August and May with league fixtures starting in September.
How much time a week will it involve?
Men’s Football team - The commitment is 2 training sessions per week with an additional 3+ hours on game weeks.
Women’s Football team - The commitment is 1 training session per week with an additional 3+ hours on game weeks.
Both men’s and women’s teams play in the Association of Colleges Regional Leagues on Wednesday afternoons. What will it cost?
There are no costs to participate, however there may be options to purchase teamwear within the year. Who can sign up?
The Football team is aimed at those with previous experience of playing within an organised league and club environment. However, those students demonstrating the potential to develop to the levels required within the trials may be offered a place within the training squad. Football is open to all, with training and games taking place under the appropriate governing body guidelines. How do I sign up?
Trials take place following enrolment and attendance is compulsory for those students wishing to be selected. It is not possible to do another enrichment alongside this.
History Academy NEW for 2026/27
Enrichment Overview
This enrichment dovetails with our History A Level course covering topics on Germany 1919-63, Mid to Late Tudors (Edward VI, Mary I & Elizabeth I) and Russia from Tsars to Communists, but will also consider topics beyond the syllabus. It is open to all students who would like to keep their passion for History alive, and would particularly suit year 12 and year 13 A Level History students.
Why choose this enrichment?
Students will have opportunities to extend their knowledge of the topics above and beyond the classroom, and develop crucial skills that are well regarded by employers and universities alike. In particular students will be encouraged to
• Develop their critical thinking, forming reasoned judgements on issues and defending arguments
• Develop oracy and presentation skills by taking part in debates, court room trials and Dragons Den activities around History topics
• Develop fluent extended writing skills to prepare them for exam work and beyond
• Access a wider variety of resources, from written texts and primary evidence, to podcasts and videos to develop skills of critical evaluation.
• Develop key employability skills useful to Universities and employers alike. Students will have opportunities to grapple with some of the high level History skills, grow in confidence with exam style questions, looking in greater depth at some of the harder questions also.

Inspire to Educate: Teaching
as a Career NEW for 2026/27
Enrichment Overview
If you’re curious about teaching, even just a little, this enrichment is for you. You don’t need to be 100% sure yet; it’s all about finding out what teaching is really like. You’ll take part in a hands-on enrichment programme that goes behind the scenes of the classroom. You’ll learn the key skills teachers use every day, like how lessons are planned, how students learn, and how teachers keep lessons engaging. The programme is delivered with South Birmingham College Teaching School, so you’ll be learning from real teachers in real schools. Why choose this enrichment?
This enrichment helps you try out teaching, build useful skills, and make informed choices about your future. If you’re considering teaching as a future career, this is a great way to get ahead. You will learn how to explain your ideas in a clear way, speak with confidence, and work well with other people. It will also help you get better at planning tasks and managing your time. These skills are valuable in any future career, as good communication, teamwork, organisation, and confidence are important in almost every job.
How long will the enrichment last?
It will last 12 weeks with the first group of students taking part in the enrichment from September to December and the second group of students from January –April.
How much time a week will it involve?
One period a week for the main session. What will it cost?
There may be possible costs for local travel and events. A clear DBS ‘Disclosure and Barring Service’ may also be needed. The cost of the DBS is approximately £60.00 and details of how to pay will be provided. Who can sign up?
This course is for all students studying any subject discipline who have an interest in becoming a teacher in the future.
How do I sign up?

Justice in Action: Exploring the Criminal Justice System
Enrichment Overview
This enrichment is open to all students who have an interest in the workings of the Criminal Justice System, or potentially a career within it. The enrichment is delivered by a criminal justice expert and will explore the personnel and processes involved in criminal investigations, prosecutions and punishments. If you are considering a career in the Criminal Justice System or have a general interest in this area (policing, law, prison or probation), this enrichment will provide you with the knowledge, understanding and skills desired by criminal justice agencies. There are also opportunities to engage in related events, trips and visits.
Why choose this enrichment?
You will develop fundamental skills in verbal communication, active listening and self-expression, whilst participating in a variety of active learning activities. There is also an opportunity to undertake a Level 3 Award in Oracy whilst doing this enrichment, enhancing confidence, communication and presentation skills, and developing critical-thinking and reasoning within discussion and presentations. The qualification carries UCAS points that contribute towards students’ University applications.

Full year.
How much time a week will it involve?
One period per week in the enrichment slot. What will it cost?
There may be possible costs for local travel and events.
Who can sign up?
This course is for students studying any subject discipline who have an interest in finding out about criminology or policing or are planning a future career in any area of the criminal justice system. How do I sign up?

Kick Start to Drive
Enrichment Overiview
This enrichment is designed to help you prepare for driving lessons. Led by a fully qualified driving instructor approved by the Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency, the four-week course offers hands-on experience in a car, an introduction to key controls, and support with preparing for the driving theory test. If you are 17 and hold a provisional licence, you will also have the opportunity to practise driving.
Why choose this enrichment?
Young drivers are at a high risk of being involved in accidents after passing their test. This enrichment is therefore designed to instill good driving habits and prepare you for your driving lessons and theory test.
How long will the enrichment last?
1 hour each week for 4 weeks.
How much time a week will it involve?
The Kick Start to Drive Course – 1 hour each week for 4 weeks
This introductory course is designed to build confidence and essential knowledge for students beginning their driving journey. The programme will include:
• Car maintenance basics – checking oil, water and general vehicle safety
• Driving practice – supervised, practical experience to develop key skills
• Theory test preparation – support in understanding and preparing to pass the driving theory test
Please note for the driving practice you must be 17 years of age and have a provisional license.
What will it cost?
£90 for a 4-week course.

Anyone can sign up to the course.
How do I sign up?
Sing up at enrolment. This enrichment runs as a single 4-week course during the scheduled enrichment slot. Due to its short duration, students can take part alongside other enrichment opportunities, including EPQ, Core Maths, Certificate in Sustainability, Duke of Edinburgh, Kitson Award, Volunteering, Student Societies, Sport for Leisure, and Team Gambia. It is possible to do another enrichment alongside this.
Kitson Award for Services to the Community
Enrichment Overview
Terry Kitson was a governor of the College between October 1992 and September 1999. He is greatly missed by his family, colleagues and friends, but his work for the College is remembered through the naming of the Kitson Building and this annual award to support students who are providing a valued service in the wider community.
Why choose this enrichment?
The award will be made in the form of a bursary to Year 12 or 13 students who are involved in voluntary work within the wider community in the UK or overseas. Students may wish to use the award to support voluntary work which they are currently involved in, or an activity which they are planning during a ‘gap’ year.
The award is seen as a competitive event, where the successful student(s) will have to demonstrate that they have satisfied a number of criteria. The selection process is also designed to support the student in developing and refining their project planning and presentation skills.
A total bursary of up to £2,000 is available to be shared between the successful applicants. In the event of two or more successful applicants, the selection panel will allocate a proportion of the bursary to each project, which is commensurate with its level of need.

The Kitson Award will be advertised across College in March 2027, with details of how to apply. It is possible to do another enrichment alongside the Kitson Award.

National Cipher Challenge
Enrichment Overview
A group of students will sign up to and tackle the National Cipher Challenge (https://www.cipherchallenge.org) as presented each year by the University of Southampton. Initial sessions start with an introduction to basic ciphers in September before looking at more difficult code cracking and the use of software. In October to December there is a sequence of challenges of increasing difficulty, posted by the university for students to try to be the first to decipher as they uncover this year’s mystery. There will be an opportunity within the enrichment to consider how the skills developed can be used in different careers.
Why choose this enrichment?
“At crypto club students often tell me that ‘I never thought I could do that’ … It isn’t solving messages that matters but the journey they take to arrive at the solution.”
Students should choose this enrichment to open up an area of mathematical and puzzle-solving thinking not normally taught in schools but is a world that increasingly drives our modern lives. What does it mean for something to be ‘encrypted’? How did we get from ancient ciphers to modern cryptography? What happened at Bletchley Park, and how did the need to crack codes in wartime lead to the invention of computers?
Students can take on this learning as part of a fun challenge that also builds teamwork and independent study skills – and getting to show off how good a code-cracker they have become. Each team of students can submit their entries to the Cipher Challenge online and if completed, students can win the national competition. The best codebreakers in the country will receive medals at a special award ceremony in Bletchley Park.

1 session per week. These start with ‘lessons’ on ciphers and later become a shared meeting for students to discuss their progress and organise their teams. What will it cost?

Netball
Enrichment
Overview
The Netball team is an all-year activity, which provides the opportunity for students to play within an organised College netball league.
Why choose this enrichment?
This enrichment gives you the opportunity to develop yourself physically, socially and emotionally. You will develop your teamwork and communication skills along with the organisation needed to balance training, game preparation and academic work.
How long will the enrichment last?
The enrichment takes place between August and May with league fixtures weekly.
How much time a week will it involve?
The commitment is for 5 hours per week, which is a mixture of training and game time. Fixtures are played in the Association of Colleges Regional league.
What will it cost?
There are no costs to participate, however there may be options to purchase Teamwear within the year.
Who can sign up?
The Netball team is aimed at female players with previous experience of playing within an organised league and club environment. However, those students demonstrating the potential to develop to the levels required within the trials will be offered a place within the training squad.

Practical Science and Analytical Investigation
Enrichment Overview
This enrichment is open to everyone who would love to get some hands-on experience of practical investigations in a science lab. You will start with some exciting science experiments, learning new lab skills. You will then go on to develop your analytical skills through a series of practice investigations, and those who demonstrate a high enough level, will be entered into the Royal Society of Chemistry, Schools analyst competition.
Why choose this enrichment?
This enrichment will give you the chance to work with others, develop your observation and communication skills and problem-solve. You’ll gain a better understanding of how scientific principles and concepts apply to everyday situations, and give you a chance to analyse and review. This may even cultivate a lifelong interest in science and related fields.

Pre-Medical School
Enrichment Overview
The Pre-Medical school is an enrichment activity designed to support students who have serious and realistic aspirations to study medicine at university. Students will have the opportunity to explore the world of Medical Science outside of the syllabus. It will prepare students for university applications by developing their awareness of current affairs within this field, understanding of the medical profession and develop a greater appreciation of the essential skills and relevant experience required for a successful university application. They will develop their oracy and confidence while discussing ethical issues as well as current initiatives within this field. Types of activities include:

Psychology Academy
Enrichment Overview
Psychology students who join this specialist enrichment will have the opportunity to work with psychology professionals / researchers and visit universities. This opportunity gives students the chance to investigate the science behind psychology. In the first instance, students will investigate famous scientific studies and their methods of research; then students will develop their own research project. This enrichment leads to an Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), giving students the chance to boost their university application with extra UCAS points.
If you are interested in continuing to study Psychology (or a combined degree such as Psychology and Criminology) then the Psychology Academy will be very useful for you. All students who do this enrichment must be studying A level Psychology.
Students in the Psychology Academy will also get prime seats for any visitors/ specialists invited into college – a highly beneficial insight into careers psychology leads into and what avenues of specialism spring from psychology Why choose this enrichment?

Led by a member of the Careers team, this enrichment takes the form of a series of workshops, which will help students who are seeking employment to be able to:

3. Prepare for interviews and assessment centres
4. Secure a desired role
5. Be ready to start the role
The content will support students who are seeking employment or an apprenticeship after college.
The workshop topics are:

Enrichment Overview
These sessions are recreational sport and physical leisure activities ranging from Badminton to 5-a-side football, Ultimate Frisbee, Pickleball, Basketball and many others. They occur mainly across lunchtimes three days per week, but also during the day depending on sports hall usage.
Why choose this enrichment?
Sport for Leisure enrichment activities provide students with the opportunity to take part in a range of supervised activities. Students will develop new friendships and have a physical outlet in which they have fun whilst being active.
How long will the enrichment last?
These sport activities will occur from September - July.
How much time a week will it involve?
Sessions will be 55 mins with a minimum of 3 occurring within the week and will be a range of different activities.

Sport Plus NEW for 2026/27
Enrichment Overview
Sport Plus is a coached sports enrichment programme which provides students with the opportunity to attend a weekly timetabled sport session. Throughout the academic year, students will experience a varied programme of sporting activities, delivered through progressive sessions that develop technical ability, tactical understanding, physical fitness and confidence in performance settings.
Why choose this enrichment?
The programme is designed for students who enjoy learning and developing their skills through organised sessions rather than informal recreation. You may want to be coached, gain experience of different activities or enjoy having a weekly practical lesson.
How long will the enrichment last?
The programme runs throughout the academic year, from September to July.

One timetabled session per week lasting 90 minutes.

There is no cost to participate in the Coached Sports Enrichment Programme.

The programme is open to Year 12 students who are motivated to engage in structured physical activity. It will be run on a termly basis.

STEM Programme
Enrichment Overview
The STEM enrichment is an opportunity for students to further develop their skills and passion for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Students will work, in teams, on a variety of engineering-based projects set by their teacher. It will give students the chance to explore areas of STEM that are not on the specifications of their subjects, for example Fluid Dynamics, Transmission Systems & Aerodynamics used in building rockets and wind turbines. The skills you will develop through this project work would be highly regarded by universities and employers in STEM subjects. Students will log their journey to final finished projects and submit a team presentation. These projects can be entered into The Big Bang competition or Crest Award.

You will enrich and broaden your experiences of STEM, outside of your subject specification. You will develop research, teamwork, creative problem solving, critical thinking and practical skills. By completing the project, you will be able to demonstrate you can work independently and are self-motivated.

Stretch & Challenge Programme
Enrichment Overview
The Stretch and Challenge enrichment provides extensive support and guidance for students applying to Russell Group universities including Oxford and Cambridge. It consists of:
• a parents’ evening for students and parents/carers who may have little experience of the university application process
• preparation for university tests and interviews
• support with personal statements
• extra support for first generation university applicants applying to competitive courses
• a place on the Stretch & Challenge Summer School in June
• access to a Teams group with links, activities and aptitude tests which will strengthen applications to university
• a specific programme for those students considering applying to Oxford or Cambridge (Students interested in medicine should also ensure they have signed up to the Pre-Medical School.)
Why choose this enrichment?
This enrichment aims to make students aware of aspirational university options early on in their time at college so that they can apply to summer schools and masterclasses at the earliest possible opportunity. It provides a community and support basis for students who enjoy academic pursuits and encourages students to stretch and challenge themselves by helping them access resources and events beyond their classroom lessons.
How long will the enrichment last?
December of Year 12 until January of Year 13.
How much time a week will it involve?
This will vary from month to month where sometimes just attendance at a meeting might be expected. All participants are expected to attend the Stretch and Challenge Summer School in June and if a student decides to apply for a competitive course or university such as Oxford or Cambridge, they will be expected to dedicate a lot of their independent study time to their application.
What will it cost?
Nothing, other than optional trips.
Who can sign up?
There is a recruitment process for the Stretch and Challenge Programme. Usually students will need to have a very good GCSE profile of strong passes and an academic record would contain evidence of:
• unwavering enthusiasm and interest in their subject and other academic pursuits.
• being proactive and independent.
• having the desire to seek out wider reading and research opportunities.
• taking part in some sort of extra-curricular activity – this could be the Extended Project Qualification or wider reading or work experience.
How do I sign up?
Students with a strong GCSE profile are invited to a meeting in December to address the key commitments of the programme and are invited to attend subsequent events. For the Stretch and Challenge Summer School in June, interested students sign up via Microsoft Forms in May of Year 12. It is highly recommended that students eligible for this programme choose it in addition to another enrichment such as EPQ.
Student Council
Enrichment Overview
As a member of the Student Council, you can be involved in shaping the decisions that involve all students at Solihull Sixth Form College. The Student Council is the voice of the student body. Its function is to share student ideas, interests, and concerns with the wider college community and to members of the Senior Leadership Team. Being a member of the Student Council will help you to develop important skills that will support your progression beyond College. You will develop leadership skills by organising and carrying out educational and charity events that contribute to the College’s spirit and community. You will develop communication skills because this role requires you to talk to everyone from your peers to governors and teachers. Roles in the Student Council include chair, vice chair, charity officer and voice officer to name but a few. The Student Council is set up to help improve the College by creating a place where student opinion can be developed, shared, and presented to the College Senior Leadership Team, governors, staff and other stakeholders.

Being at College is not all about academic study; it is also a time to meet new people and try out new experiences. Our enrichment programme of student-led clubs and societies encourages you to widen your horizons and develop valuable skills that will complement the knowledge gained in your lessons. We encourage all students to take up an enrichment. Student societies can encompass any interest, activity, or hobby that you may have. Any student can lead a society. The only requirement is that you must have at least 5 like-minded people who want to be in your society. Student societies are organised and operated by students for students. Examples of recently run societies are Environmental Club, British Sign Language enrichment, Book Club, Craft Club, LGBTQ+ Society, Christian Society and Islamic Society to name but a few.

Sustainability Level 3 Certificate
Enrichment Overview
This qualification is designed to be taken as part of a Level 3 study programme, with a strong focus on the practical application of skills and knowledge.
The topics covered by this qualification include the three fundamental pillars of sustainability: environmental sustainability, economic sustainability, and social sustainability. Students will learn about the practices organisations are adopting to become more sustainable, and the technologies that are being used. You will also learn research methodologies and how to analyse data and draw conclusions. You will use this knowledge and understanding to investigate a real organisation’s practices and recommended how they can become more sustainable.
Input from the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), leading universities, and other stakeholders ensures this qualification covers the fundamental aspects of sustainability and encourages students to find positive solutions to pressing sustainability challenges faced by governments, organisations, and individuals.

Sustainability and climate change are very important to think about for the future. It’s also important to help young people deal with eco-anxiety and show them positive ways to handle these big challenges. The current curriculum might not be green enough now, but we can help make it greener in a way that is easy to manage.
Studying the OCR Level 3 Certificate in Sustainability can be beneficial for several reasons. It provides a strong foundation in sustainability principles, prepares students for further education or employment, and equips them with practical skills needed to address sustainability challenges. The qualification also focuses on the real-world application of knowledge, allowing students to explore how organisations can adopt more sustainable practices.
How long will the enrichment last?
September - May half-term.
How much time a week will it involve?
Three lessons per week totalling 4.5 hours. Intervention sessions may extend this to 5 hours in certain weeks. Students will also need to complete some homework and independent study.
How is it assessed?
This qualification is equivalent to an AS level. It is 50% examination and 50% NEA (Non-examined assessment).

Any student with an interest in sustainability can sign up. Sustainability particularly complements the broad range of subjects on offer at Solihull Sixth Form College, such as Geography, Economics, Business, Art and Design and Sociology.

Team Gambia
Enrichment Overview
This fantastic project involves a visit to The Gambia in West Africa to complete voluntary work in a nursery school in Abuko on the outskirts of Banjul. For students it really is a special and unique experience which will improve their communication skills, develop confidence and the ability to work successfully as part of a team.
Why choose this enrichment?
Students from previous trips always say it’s the best thing they have ever done – an experience that money cannot buy. The fundraising is a challenge but being able to see the difference that it makes to children’s lives, makes it more than worthwhile. They love teaching the children in the school, being a part of Gambian culture and getting to know each other well is the added and unexpected bonus.
How long will the enrichment last?
One week in either November or December 2027.
How much time a week will it involve?
Meetings with lead staff in relation to planning for the trip (approximately 8 meetings in the January to November period). In addition, there is a considerable individual time commitment for fundraising and preparing teaching materials.
What will it cost?
The trip costs approximately £1,400 per student plus approximately £100 for vaccinations/anti-malaria tablets. In addition, students are expected to fundraise at least £400 each (from January - September) to improve teaching facilities and sanitation at the school and pay teachers’ salaries.
Who can sign up?
Places are available for up to 30 enthusiastic Year 12 Students, who are interested in learning more about life in a developing country. You can register your interest by emailing Anisa Lokat-Fanning, Associate Assistant Principal.

Students will be invited to a meeting in January 2027. The 30 places will be allocated following a check on attendance and behaviour records, on a first come first served basis. Teaching English as a Foreign Language – TEFL (Level 2
Certificate) NEW for 2026/27

A TEFL certificate is internationally recognised and allows you to teach English in schools abroad, privately in the UK or online anywhere. The course is delivered by the English and Modern Languages teachers.

One hour per week of lesson time (during the enrichment slot on a Wednesday afternoon), plus some independent study via further reading and preparation for the assessment.
Throughout the course, you will study using lots of interactive learning elements including: presenter-led videos, narrator-led videos, matching and sorting activities, galleries, flipbooks, tasks, and concept checking quizzes.
There is a TEFL exam where you are given 45 questions to answer within a threehour time limit (multiple choice questions and entering key words).
The Graded Module includes two coursework submissions - creating an ice breaker and lesson plan. You are given a full brief and criteria on what you will need to include.

This is an externally accredited course and costs £90. This can be paid in one payment of £90 or two payments of £45 in September and January.

Theatre-in-Education Company
Enrichment Overview
The Drama enrichment is a unique opportunity to work as a theatre company and experience producing a production for public performance. This enrichment will involve developing performance and/or design skills to a live brief where you will work as young professionals to create imaginative and bold theatre.
Why choose this enrichment?
The experience is just the sort of challenge universities and employers value highly, for budding Drama students or creatives alike. You will also develop a range of transferable skills, such as teamwork, public speaking, leadership and problem solving. It is an opportunity to develop your creativity by taking on a production role such as a costume designer, technical designer, director or performer.

One lesson in the enrichment slot, with some post-4pm rehearsals where necessary.

Year 12 students will sign up at enrolment and will be offered a place on this enrichment in the Spring or Summer term. Ultimate Frisbee
Enrichment Overview
Ultimate Frisbee is a grassroots team sport, involving a wealth of different skills. With 5-v-5 (indoor) or 7-v-7 (outdoor) games, Ultimate is home to a wide array of players ranging from different skill levels. It is Olympically-recognised and has international competitions, as well as professional leagues like the Ultimate Frisbee Association or ‘UFA’. This enrichment will cover the basic rules and techniques utilised in Ultimate, as well as delving into the deeper, more technical elements that drastically improve the way you play.
Why choose this enrichment?
This enrichment will be run by a UK National Champion, who has coached at all levels of Ultimate from international clubs, to school teams. We welcome players of all skill levels and aim to train you into proficient Ultimate athletes. A large focus of the sport is ‘Spirit of the Game’, with teams being ranked on the sportsmanship, fair-mindedness, and knowledge of the game, which is something that is very important to Ultimate’s core values and the way it is officiated. Unlike a lot of other sports, Ultimate prides itself on being self-officiated. This means that players need to become confident on the rules and technicalities to compete and discuss them with other players. Ultimate can also be highly athletic, so if you are just looking for a fun and interesting sport to help yourself get fit, then this is the one for you.
How long will the enrichment last?
This enrichment will run all year either indoor or outdoor (depending on weather). Trainings are Monday 12-2pm but this is subject to change in relation to sports hall usage. What will it cost?

Volunteering
Enrichment Overview
Volunteering is a practical way for students to start thinking critically about some of the social issues which people face across the country. Whether it is raising money for a homelessness charity, supporting health ambassadors with a campaign on drugs, or raising awareness about breast cancer, volunteering is a great introduction to these difficult topics and shows students how they can take steps to make a difference.
At Solihull Sixth Form College you can volunteer in several ways:
• Being involved in a charitable event at college e.g. Christmas food bank appeal
• Working directly for a charity e.g. Umbrella
• Being a mentor to other students
• Supporting College events such as the Community Iftar and Fun Day.
• Team Gambia volunteer project
The College works with the Shirley Lions Club to help you to achieve a volunteering accreditation. Depending on the number of hours you volunteer for you can achieve a platinum, gold, silver, or bronze award. Remember that your volunteering experience can also be used as evidence for the Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh awards (see enrichment guide page 15).
Why choose this enrichment?
Volunteering can provide a healthy boost to your self-confidence and selfesteem. Being a volunteer can also give you a sense of pride and identity. Volunteering will allow you to develop skills such as communication, timemanagement, leadership, delegation, and problem-solving. The skills you gain from volunteering can also be added to your personal statement and job applications.
How long will the enrichment last?
Volunteering can be undertaken at any time during your two years at the College. How much time a week will it involve?
