Think Tank > Unlocking Arab Countries’ Potential: Harnessing Renewable Energy To Drive Sustainable Growth And Reduce Carbon Emissions – Report The report titled “The GDP–CO2 Emissions Nexus in Arab Countries” by the Arab Monetary Fund explores the relationship between economic growth (Gross Domestic Product, GDP) and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in Arab countries. The study examines the environmental impact of economic development in the region and provides insights into the dynamics between economic growth and carbon emissions. The report finds that Arab countries have experienced significant economic growth over the years, leading to increased energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. It highlights the importance of understanding the GDP-CO2 emissions nexus to develop effective strategies for sustainable development and environmental protection. The findings suggest that there is a positive correlation between economic growth and CO2 emissions in Arab countries. However, the magnitude of this relationship varies across countries, indicating the influence of country-specific factors. The study emphasizes the need for tailored policies and measures to address the environmental challenges faced by each country.
Oman’s Huge Renewable Hydrogen Potential Can Bring Multiple Benefits In Its Journey To Net Zero Emissions – Report A new IEA report presented to the Omani Minister shows how rich renewable resources and vast land expanses could make Oman a competitive low-emissions hydrogen supplier by 2030. Oman’s high-quality renewable energy resources and vast tracts of available land make it well-placed to produce large quantities of low-emissions hydrogen – a fledgling industry today that can attract investment to diversify and expand the country’s export revenues while reducing its natural gas consumption and emissions, according to a new IEA report released. Oman aims to produce at least 1 million tons of renewable hydrogen a year by 2030, up to 3.75 million tonnes by 2040 – and up to 8.5 million tonnes by 2050, which would be greater than the total hydrogen demand in Europe today. The 2040 hydrogen target would represent 80% of Oman’s current LNG exports in energyequivalent terms, while achieving the 2050 target would almost double them. Scaling up production of renewable hydrogen in Oman to 1 million tonnes by 2030 would require a cumulative investment of around USD 33 billion. An additional USD 4 billion would be required to bring renewables’ share of the national electricity mix to 20%, the report says. Achieving its targets and using one-third of renewable hydrogen for domestic uses would significantly contribute to Oman’s clean energy transition. The benefits would include reducing domestic use of natural gas by 3 billion cubic meters a year and avoiding 7 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

GCC Banks’ Exposure To High-Risk Sectors In The Energy Transition Has Been Stable In The Past 3 Years – Report The effect of the energy transition on oil and gas prices and investor and customer appetite for finance will be an important factor for Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) banks’ long-term creditworthiness. In the three years since the report was first published on GCC banks’ exposure to energy transition, their exposure to sectors most subject to energy transition risks has remained broadly the same by S&P Global Ratings. How energy transition affects oil and gas prices and investor and customer appetites for carbon-intensive sectors and markets will influence GCC banks’ long-term creditworthiness. However, we still believe that certain competitive advantages–such as low extraction costs and the ability to flexibly increase production capacity–position GCC economies well in the global energy transition. Significantly, GCC banks are trying to advance their sustainability agenda by increasing their sustainable finance offerings to customers and contributing to government efforts to decarbonize economies. A few banks have also tapped the international capital markets through sustainable bonds and sukuk, including green bonds and sukuk. We expect this trend to continue as banks seek to remain in global investors’ sights. We also anticipate a progressive strengthening of climate risk disclosure.

Chinese solar leaders stride forward to make Arab world greener “Currently, our market share in the Middle East has reached 20-30 percent,” a LONGi Green Energy staff told Gwadar Pro. On October 20, the LONGi Middle East and Africa Training Center was inaugurated in Dubai, UAE, providing not only team training, but also energize local distributors, installers, as well as other partners. “At the beginning of this year, we have already signed a total of 500MW distribution orders for latest product Hi-MO 6 photovoltaic modules with numerous distribution partners from the Middle East, North Africa and Central Asia at the 15th Abu Dhabi World Future Energy Summit (WFES). The energy transformation actively pursued by Middle Eastern countries coincides with China’s carbon peak and neutrality goals.” Earlier this year, LONGi has announced the launch of a Solar Academy for Middle East distribution and C&I, an allencompassing training program specifically designed to equip sales engineers, installers and EPC personnel with the knowledge and skills needed to be effective in the field of solar energy. LONGi’s layout shows the bright prospects for China’s new energy, especially photovoltaic companies, to expand opportunities in the Middle East, which is inseparable from the urgent need of Arab countries for the overall transformation of new energy at the national level. Take UAE being an example, for the past few years, the country has launched the construction of a series of PV projects. It is expected that by 2025, the UAE’s installed PV capacity will reach 8.5GW. According to statistics from the Middle East Solar Industry Association (MESIA), the current value of the PV market in the Middle East and North Africa is approximately USD 20 billion. In the next five years, PV projects worth USD 5 billion will be put into operation in the Middle East. According to reports, the low-carbon energy industry in the Middle East and North Africa will have a project value of USD 257 billion by 2030, among which PV account for 50 percent, which means that the Middle East will be a market worth nearly RMB 1 trillion. InfoLink statistics showed that in 2022, the Middle East imported a total of 11.4GW of PV modules from China, an increase of 78 percent compared to 2021. Among them, the UAE has imported about 3.6GW of modules from China in 2022, a year-on-year increase of 340 percent, making it China’s largest module customer in the region. Li Zhenguo, founder and president of LONGi, gave a speech at the 2023 ESG Global Leaders Conference held in September, pointing out that from its launch in 2012 to 2022, LONGi’s cumulative production of PV products in terms of silicon wafers has reached 290GW. As of the end of last year, these PV products can output more than 1,148.2 billion kilowatt-hours of
17
SOLARQUARTER Middle East
green electricity globally, which is equivalent to avoiding approximately 536 million tons of carbon emissions, accounting for 1.46 percent of global energy-related carbon emissions in 2022. “According to calculations, the direct energy consumption from quartz ore mining to PV module production is only about 0.4 kilowatt-hours per watt, while the power generation of each watt of PV modules during its full life cycle (30 years) is about 45 kilowatt-hours, of which means photovoltaic converts the 0.4 kilowatt-hour it consumes into 45 kilowatt-hours of green electricity, and the final energy efficiency is 100 times greater than its production consumption. Such efficiency undoubtedly means that the PV industry plays a decisive role in global sustainable development goals. This year, we will continue to release the 2023 Climate Action White Paper at the 28th Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC (COP 28) to demonstrate our comprehensive practices to tackle climate change.” Taking a global view, the Middle East has abundant solar radiation resources and a desert climate with little rain, which could be defined as a precious fertile ground for the development of solar energy. Countries in this region are also trying to gradually get rid of their over-reliance on the oil economy. Such as the UAE and Saudi Arabia are gradually increasing investment in new energy and have set ambitious renewable energy goals. “As climate change is a global issue, the UAE feels compelled to share its knowledge and solutions with all parties to support collective efforts to reach net zero by 2050, ” noted Abdulaziz Alobaidli, chief operating officer of Masdar, the UAE's flagship renewable energy company.

Best Practices for Design and Construction of Solar PV Canopies
AUTHOR
SAMER ZAWAYDEH Consultant,
Independent Engineer
Car parks and bus parking and maintenance lots usually need a large area of land. This land can be covered with solar PV systems in order to generate electricity and cover part or all of the electricity requirements for the facilities. This article will highlight the best practices in order to proceed with the design, construction, operation and maintenance, and cleaning of these canopy structures. Land: The owner of the land must prepare recent deed, plot layout, detailed land plot, survey report and soil testing report and any other paperwork related to the condition of the land.
Foundation: The soil report and the architectural drawings will be used to calculate the load on the foundation and subsequently a civil structural engineer will design the foundations. Metal Structure: A civil structural engineer specialized in metal structure will create the model for the canopy and apply the design load and load combination according to the local codes, tender requirements or international codes. Metal columns are raised at least 80cm above ground on concrete column necks in order to avoid car collisions. Electrical System: A solar PV designer will prepare the energy model and all the design drawings according to local electrical codes, and grid codes. Cleaning System: it is recommended that a robotic cleaning system is adopted for the car park design. Otherwise, it will require manlifts, cranes, and it will be more expensive over the operational lifetime. Robotic cleaning will be more frequent and provide more energy output.
Regulation: Some countries already developed special regulations and instructions for the installation of solar PV car parks because they have developed experience over the years and adopted the best practices in the form of mandatory instructions. For example, the Greater Amman Municipality in Jordan has the following mandatory requirements for solar PV car parks
Construction: Construction must be done by experience and competent contractors.
a)1. GAM specified that the solar car park must not cover more than 50% of distance between building and edge of land.
Monitoring And Evaluation: This must be done on daily basis and a report is provided on monthly basis in order to ensure that the annual electricity production is achieved.
b)1. Lower edge can’t be higher than 2.4m above the ground level and the upper edge can’t be higher than 3.15m above the ground level. Schematic Design: a qualified architectural and engineering office must prepare the drawings and they need to secure the license from the authorities.
25
SOLARQUARTER Middle East
Maintenance: Maintenance contract is required and at least visual inspection is done once a year of all components, and thermal imaging is done once a year for electrical distribution boards and part of the PV modules and components.
Balance of Plant: This can include lighting system, CCTV system, signage, wheel stopper, electric power outlets and water faucet system for the cleaning operation, fence, inverter protection or inverter room, bird edge, line marking, and corner guards for concrete column necks.
