Dear Members, Partners, and Friends of the EDC, As many of you know, I spent the first year of my leadership tenure putting quite a few miles on my car. I met with well over a hundred businesses and one of the more consistent refrains was that they had lost touch with the city due to staff turnovers, or they didn’t know who to call when they needed assistance. It was also clear that most of them weren’t aware of, or taking advantage of myriad state programs that could save them money. Most businesses are spread too thin and don’t have the bandwidth or know how to pursue things like ETP (Employee Training Panel), Cal Competes, or R&D Equipment Tax Credits. In consultation with my Economic Development peers at the City and County level, we sought additional funding to hire a specialist that would work across the county. It took some time to find the right person, but boy did we. Several weeks ago, Nicole Mooc accepted the role of Business Retention and Expansion Manager at Solano EDC. As the Business Retention and Expansion Manager, Nicole will be a vital component to the organization's efforts to sustain meaningful growth in Solano County. She is excited about building positive synergies between local businesses and their communities. Prior to joining the team, Nicole worked in the private sector in international sales and account management for the food industry. She was previously a Sales Account Manager for Spero Foods, a startup company in the East Bay, and an International Sales Manager for Jelly Belly Candy Company, where she was responsible for business development in Southeast Asia. Nicole is a proud alum of the University of Iowa – Go Hawks! – with an MBA from the Tippie College of Business and a BA in International Studies and Chinese. In her free time, Nicole enjoys trying out new recipes, gardening, and traveling! Please join us in welcoming Nicole to the team

Although it might not always seem obvious, everything our organization does is in service of attracting and retaining a diversity of businesses in Solano County. Our work on a regional ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit) strategy comes directly from our largest employers consistently citing lack of adequate housing for their younger professionals. The state average of multi-family is 25%. Solano County has 14%. The Revolving Loan Fund we will be launching shortly will be of great benefit to our small businesses, who as we know are the drivers of job growth. The Priority Production grant from MTC/ABAG we’re working on in partnership with all of the cities is specifically focused on bringing higher value employers to Solano so that folks don’t have to spend hours in the car each day. Lastly, the non profit capacity building work we’re doing is motivated by an understanding that these organizations will be vital in developing the human capital that large employers look for when they decide where to move. They work to keep people housed, educated, trained, healthy, and out of jail. Our goal is to dramatically decrease the number of our fellow Solanoans who are on some form of government assistance and turn them into taxpayers with jobs. Lastly, on a professional development note, I had the good fortune to attend both the International Economic Development Conference in Dallas, and the California Forward Economic Summit in Palms Springs in recent weeks. I’m grateful to have the resources to continue to grow professionally and learn about great strategies, programs, and best practices to share with you all Brace yourself for several months of Christmas music, pumpkin spice and peppermint flavored everything! SECURED MORE THAN $9.65 M. IN NEW FEDERAL FUNDING U.S. Rep. John Garamendi secured more than $9.65 million in new federal funding for community projects across Solano and Contra Costa Counties including money going to Vallejo for Ferry Terminal Reconfiguration Project, a regional trail route, Highway 37 and the city’s Early Learning Center. $750,000 FOR JOB TRAINING
Vacaville awarded a two-year grant to the California Biomanufacturing Center, a nonprofit the city started in 2020 to accelerate the growth of the industry locally. The money, which came to the city from American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 funds for retraining or equipping workers.
