Dear Members, Partners, and Friends of the EDC, I hope you all had a wonderful, connected time at Thanksgiving. A few weeks before, in partnership with Solano County, the Syar Foundation, Wells Fargo, the Kaiser Foundation, the Sutter Foundation, First Five, Touro University, and Travis Credit Union, our organization achieved something of which I am tremendously proud. The Syar Foundation Summit, held at Touro University, was the culmination of over a year’s work. We started with an audacious vision, which was to create a meaningful non profit capacity building summit that would also serve as an opportunity to gather funders from across the region to show them who we are and where the philanthropic investment opportunities are. As you may know, Solano County is a philanthropy desert. We receive 1 penny for every dollar that San Francisco receives in philanthropy per capita. Based on our demographics, we have more need than any other county in the region. In order to create the kind of thriving economy where everyone prospers, we need a well resourced, highly functioning non profit ecosystem that can work to get the one in three Solanoans who currently receive public assistance to be educated and trained, gainfully employed, healthy, housed and paying taxes. The day of our standing room only event, nearly 150 nonprofit leaders, civic leaders, and funders gathered for a plenary session that featured conversations that focused on innovative ways to lift up an ecosystem. Given that our inaugural event was in Vallejo, this year had a particular focus on that city and its many needs, challenges, and opportunities.

We were fortunate enough to have folks fly in from all over the country to share their wisdom and perspective, including Amanda Daflos who runs the Bloomberg Center for Public Innovation, and Sherri Francois who is the Chief Impact Officer for Sola in Los Angeles. Becky Endicott and Jon McCoy, founders of We Are For Good, flew in with several of their rock star leaders to run the nonprofit capacity building portion of the day. Thanks to Wells Fargo, that cohort of local leaders will receive a year’s worth of support from the We are For Good team and their unique platform. It has been incredibly gratifying to hear from so many people how impactful our event was. Funders were particularly effusive and I feel hopeful that we’re going to bring abundance to our philanthropy desert. We’re not going to stop until we get our fair share. We will center CALIFORNIA FOREVER’s plan for development in a conversation with them and SOLANO TOGETHER, a coalition of Solano Orderly Growth Committee, the Greenbelt Alliance, the Sierra Club, the NapaSolano Audubon Society, and the California Native Plant Society. BIOMANUFACTURING HUB IN VACAVILLE
Taking the first steps to build a biomanufacturing hub in Vacaville, Mango Materials opened its Launch Facility at the Easterly Wastewater Treatment Plant earlier this month in partnership with the City of Vacaville. According to officials from Mango Materials, the company is validating the use of Easterly’s biogas as a feedstock in the company’s proprietary process to produce YOPP+ biopolymer pellets as a replacement for polluting plastics in this initial chapter. The City of Vallejo has approved the plans for new housing at 5180 Sonoma Boulevard. The project will add over four hundred new homes to Solano County’s most populous city. Jackson Square Properties is the project developer.This initiative aims to bring together the power of art and the spoken word to address pressing environmental and social justice issues affecting our community and beyond. The Vallejo Center for the Arts has been awarded a grant from the Sacramento Creative Corp for a new project focused on public awareness related to water and energy conservation, climate mitigation, emergency preparedness, relief, and recovery. This initiative aims to bring together the power of art and the spoken word to address pressing environmental and social justice issues affecting our community and beyond. Price began his life of service in Fairfield in 1965 as a teacher at Vanden High School. In 1992, he was appointed to the Fairfield Planning Commission. Five years later, in 1997, he was elected to the Fairfield City Council. He became Mayor in 2005 and held that title until his passing in 2022. Price was 85 when he died Dec. 16, 2022. NATION’S FINEST OPENS NEW OFFICE
Nation’s Finest, a non-profit Veterans service organization, announced the opening of a new office in Vacaville, California to respond to the ongoing challenges faced by Veterans in Solano County. Join us and our friends at Bay Area Regional Energy Network (BayREN) on December 7th, virtually for the BayREN Regional Forum “Residential Electrification in the Real World: Navigating Panels and Permits.” Learn about hurdles to residential electrification, including electrical panels and building permits, and ways to overcome them. Save the date for the 13th Annual Woman in Maritime Leadership (WML) Conference on March 15-16, 2024. Last year, marked 50 years since the first women were admitted to Cal Maritime during our annual WML Conference. This year, they are continuing the tradition of delivering an equity-focused leadership development curriculum specific to the goals of cadets and professional women in the maritime industry.
