COMMODORE’S REFLECTIONS: A Year of Delivering on Our Promise

welve months ago, in these pages, I wrote about the beginning of a purposeful and transformative journey for our Club – one built on financial discipline, governance reform, and a culture of shared values and belonging. That article set out where we intended to go. This one is about how far we’ve come. When the new Management Committee was elected, we identified three strategic pillars to guide us: strengthening financial security, reforming governance and operations, and fostering culture and inclusivity. A year on, I’m proud to report that these aren’t just aspirations anymore – they’re results. Strengthening Financial Security Last year we reported cost savings approaching $350,000 through early internal reforms. Since then, that work has accelerated. Over the past financial year, we’ve reduced wastage, cut unnecessary costs, and reviewed contracts across the Club to ensure every dollar is working as hard as our members do. We changed our banking arrangements and revisited our investment strategy to make sure the Club’s reserves are being managed prudently and productively. Taken together, these measures have delivered savings of more than $500,000 for the Club – a substantial improvement on where we stood twelve months ago. Just as importantly, this hasn’t been about cutting for its own sake. We’ve put formal operating procedures in place across key areas of the Club, and in doing so, we’ve improved the processes themselves – not just trimmed their cost. Financial security isn’t a one-off exercise; it’s a discipline, and it’s one we intend to keep practising well into the future. Governance and Operational Reform Last year I wrote that our transition toward a Board of Management was “gaining traction.” Over the past

eighteen months, the Management Committee has worked steadily on this reform, with a concerted push since our last AGM to share with members exactly what this change would mean – because reform of this magnitude only works if it’s built on transparency and trust, not rumour and conjecture. At the time of writing, the new draft Rules and By-Laws have been completed, along with the Terms of Reference for a prospective Board, a new committee structure, position descriptions, and the many other details involved in a potential move from a Management Committee to a Board of Directors. By the time this article reaches you, members will be ready to have their say on this proposal at the vote. Whatever the outcome, I want to thank every member who took the time to engage with this process, ask questions, and make their voice heard – that engagement is, in itself, a mark of a healthy Club. If members have voted in favour, we’ll be working through a carefully staged transition to the new structure. If the vote has gone the other way, the extensive work done on our governance framework – the modernised Rules, the clearer processes, the improved transparency – remains valuable in its own right, and the Management Committee will take that feedback on board as we consider the best path forward together. Either way, the standard of governance our members deserve doesn’t change, and neither does our commitment to getting there. Planning for Our Future: Buildings and Water Infrastructure With a stronger financial foundation now in place, we’re in a position to shift some of our attention from repairing the Club’s finances to investing deliberately in its future. Chief among these priorities is the state of our buildings and water infrastructure – the physical foundations that

everything else we do depends on. Many of our facilities and much of our marine infrastructure have served the Club well for years, but they require thoughtful, long-term planning if they’re going to continue supporting our members for decades to come. Having brought our operating costs under control and rebuilt our reserves, we now have the financial basis to start that planning properly, rather than reacting to issues as they arise. Over the coming year, the Board/Committee will be scoping the condition and future needs of our key assets, so that any investment we make is guided by evidence and by our members’ priorities, not guesswork. This is a longer conversation, and we’ll be bringing members into it as our plans take shape. Fostering Culture and Inclusivity Amid all this structural change, the heart of the Club remains exactly where it should: with our members. Whether you’re racing on a Saturday, cruising with family, mentoring a junior sailor, or simply enjoying a sundowner on the deck, the culture we spoke about last year – one of pride, inclusivity, safety, and community – continues to be the compass by which we steer. Financial discipline, governance reform, and infrastructure planning are not ends in themselves; they exist to protect and grow the things that make this Club special. Looking Ahead None of this progress happens by accident, and none of it happens alone. To our staff, our Management Committee, and the volunteers who give their time so generously – thank you. The work of the past year, from renegotiating contracts to drafting new by-laws, has been detailed, often unglamorous, and absolutely essential. Anchored in purpose, powered by people, and now backed by results — we look forward to continuing this journey with you, whatever shape the road ahead takes.

A YEAR IN REVIEW FOR MEMBER ENGAGEMENT COMMITTEE

he Member Engagement Committee represents you, the member, across all member-facing sections and interest groups, both on and off the water. It is a vital link in the proposed new Board structure and will continue to be chaired by the Vice Commodore. Members attending our monthly meetings and bringing news, views and ideas from across the Club include Bruce Uren, representing Keelboat Sailing; Robin Wilcockson, Vice-Captain Power; and Rob Willis, Vice-Captain Cruising. Our subcommittee representatives ensure members’ hopes, dreams and aspirations are also heard: Rick Steuart, Archive and Publications (photography) and Bosun’s Club; Ann McCluskey, Club Functions, Ladies Lunch and Ambassador Coordinator; Cally Browning, Publications (design and layout); Shelley Tamsitt, Publications (advertising and Grand Sponsors); and Sue Smith, Committee Secretary, Publications sub-editor and Ladies Lunch Committee. The Committee is supported by Management Committee members Carl Pettersson (Volunteer Recognition) and Iain Sommerville. Together, they assist with strategic planning, policy updates and development, and guiding ideas through to the Management Committee. Much of the Management Committee’s work is unseen by the Member Engagement Committee. Developing new Member Categories, Codes of Conduct, Member Functions and Benefits Policies continues in the background, alongside Administration Staff and the Governance team, who continually review and improve these areas. The chairs and organisers of our subcommittees deserve particular recognition. They are familiar names, many being long-serving members with decades of Club knowledge. I particularly acknowledge the Archive and History group, led by Rick Steuart. Cally and I were founding

members with Rick seven years ago when we came together to research the Club’s 75th anniversary. With tireless enthusiasm, Rick continues to uncover and explain new and previously lost information, often solving historical riddles. Importantly, our Archives of past records, Soundings, Minutes and Year Books have now been scanned, allowing them to be researched and crossreferenced to confirm dates, positions held by past members, boat histories and family connections. Most recently, Rick was able to confirm the milestone joining dates of badge recipients for the recent 20 Year Dinner. The Year Book article you are reading has been made possible by the volunteers of the Publications Committee. Cally Browning is the linchpin and driver of the group, managing deadlines, reminding contributors and delegating tasks and responsibilities. She has designed Soundings and the Year Book for more than a decade and is a logical successor to the Chair position, assisting the Vice Commodore with editorial decisions following Bernie Kaaks’ retirement. All Club publications are available on our website, while Soundings is also posted to members and Grand Sponsors for coffee-table display, showcasing life at the Club. The appointment of long-time member and social butterfly Ann McCluskey to Club Events, working with Food & Beverage, has greatly assisted members arranging Club and ceremonial functions. Ann was instrumental in bringing back the annual COTs concert, resulting in a sold-out Fab Four Tribute dinner and show. When the Commodore decided not to host a Commodore’s Ball, Brian instead arranged the Commodore’s Fine Wine Dinner, selecting and purchasing the wines. Working with Ann and the Chef, he planned every detail of an evening featuring the Commodore’s selected wines, paired with a delicious five-course dinner in

the candlelit Ballroom, accompanied by a live jazz singer and musicians. In closing, the proposed Board structure represents one of the most significant changes in our Club’s 81-year history. A more professional management model will reduce reliance on members, committees and volunteers for operational oversight while continuing to value and draw on their expertise. A Board will allow highly credentialed Club members to contribute their skills to long-term planning, governance and strategic decisions. The renewal of the marina riverbed lease, the new ferry route intersecting our racing and training area, and Melville Council’s redesign of the front gate are just some of the major projects requiring high-level negotiation with government departments and lawmakers. Should members vote in favour, the Member Engagement Committee will transition to the On Land Committee. The name may change, but the purpose will not. It will continue to advocate strongly for members and remain chaired by a Vice Commodore, ensuring continuity of voice and representation. Our new General Manager, Brad, has already recognised the importance of senior staff attending committee meetings. Their presence supports volunteers, improves meeting efficiency and ensures staff hear directly from member representatives. The Club’s five key operational areas – Pens & Marina, Finance, Food & Beverage, Marketing & Membership, and the On Water Group – are led by senior staff Dan, David, Natalie and Denis. The Food & Beverage Manager position, vacant since February, remains the final critical appointment needed to complete the management team reporting to the General Manager. Member Engagement Committee minutes and action logs continue to be published on the Members’ Portal, ensuring transparency and keeping members informed of progress and outcomes. outh of Perth Yacht Club’s 2025/26 sailing season has been most active with members delivering some exceptional performances across weekly racing, special regattas, and offshore events. As the Club marks its 80th sailing season, SoPYC sailors have demonstrated skill, consistency, and sportsmanship across every fleet, reinforcing the Club’s position as a leader in Western Australian sailing. The season commenced in October with the 80th Summer Season Opening Day, a highlight on the Club calendar that brought together keelboats, off the beach classes, and power vessels for the traditional sail past and Patrons Trophy Pursuit Race. We had all on-water sections of the Club participate in the sail past with some choosing to dress up their boats. The Keelboat Division winner in the Combined Fleet Patron’s Trophy Pursuit Race was Aloha (Andrew Minto). The Flying Fifteen winner was Fflashpoint (Michelle and Peter Rooke), also winning the Mel Crosby Trophy. The winner was Stripe (Seth Till), the LT Windsurfer winner was BLT (J Wild), the O’pen Skiff winner was Chewbica (Miles Beck), the Viper winner was Steel de Breeze Brian Devries/John Park/Paul Liddington), and the Optimist winner was Sea Me (Asher Williams) Throughout the year, SoPYC proudly hosted several major regattas, including the Flying Fifteen State Championships, ILCA State Titles, Pelican State Titles, Windsurf LT State Championships and the Goolugatup Sailing Carnival. These events showcased the depth of talent within the Club. The Flying Fifteen fleet produced some of the season’s most competitive racing, with SoPYC’s Effable (Mike and Paul Dunbar) securing the overall

championship with The Answer (Greg Tonnison and Scott Fallows)in second place. In the ILCA classes, SoPYC sailors performed strongly with United (Murray Duthie,) WCD (David Luketina), and Acqua Loco (Craig Williams) finishing as the top SoPYC boats in their respective fleets. Weekly racing remained the heartbeat of the Club. The Saturday Keelboat Series attracted enthusiastic fleets across Divisions 1, 2, and 3, as well as the S80, SS27, SS22, H28, and Red Witch classes. For racing in Division 1, races were largely dominated by Freo Doctor (Peter Vlaar) and Tapestry (David Atkinson). Division 2 had Ballina (David Cowden), Good Act (Greg Munt) and Against All Odds (Tawake Rakai) as leaders for the most part. The forerunners for Division 3 races were Hellas, (Nick Melidonis), Commotion (Martyn Compton) and Martine (David Cole). The Red Witches were competitive with Shenanigans (Kelvin Uren), Witch Doctor (Daniel Marshall), and Horn Blower (Tony Snow) consistently in the top 3. In the SS22 fleet, we had Mele Bilo III (David Mickle), Wildfire (Bruce Uren) and Finovola (Murray McClean) Matt Rose’s SS27 King Canute may rule the waves offshore but, on the river, we have Karina (Paul Rees), Abeelas (Brian Saleeba), Vision (Tim Harrison), Random Times (Davis Hanham) and Lady Claire (Brian Easterbrook) all jockeying for that coveted 1st position. S80s are also highly competitive with Don’t Panic! (Mat Selby), Shadowfax (Jim and Mark Gooding) and Fair Game (Sue Game) all trying to outdo each other. Finally, the H28s, (yes, I can hear you all!) took it in turns to be in the top 3, which makes me think there was a little money exchanging

hands within this intrepid fleet! The Wednesday Afternoon Series demonstrates feisty racing in all four divisions. Always in the results in. Division 1 are Tora Tobu (Stephen Grover), Mistress Quickly, Maxstar (Graeme Monkhouse), Slippery When Wet (Paul Harry, Martin Softly and Paul Tieman), Mistress Quickly (Joe Lucy and Michael Kennedy), Wicked (Richard Evans), K Factor (David Thoms) and Helios (Chris Higham). In Division 2 , Shadowfax (Jim and Mark Gooding), Fair Game (Sue Game), Olive Marie (Les Ballantyne), Magic Moment (Hank Heimans) are all jockeying for the first three positions. In Division 3, Abeelas (Brian Saleeba), Random Times (Davis Hanham), Lady Claire (Brian Easterbrook), Hellas (Nick Melidonis), and Wildfire (Bruce Uren) are always trading places. Once again, the H28s (deafening roars and applause!), demonstrated their skills with seven of the nine competing boats competitively vying for top position. Too many to name – you know who you are! Offshore racing expanded significantly during the 2025/26 season, highlighted by the return of the Pieces of Eight Ocean Race and another successful Billy Run with East Fremantle Yacht Club. SoPYC also hosted the ORWA Awards Night in May, recognising many of our offshore sailors who were winners. As the 2025/26 financial year concludes, South of Perth Yacht Club celebrates a season defined by strong results. With its 80th season now complete, the Club looks ahead to 2026/27 with confidence, momentum, and fleets eager for more competition on the Swan River and beyond. PS I believe there is another Melges 32 coming to the Club in approximately six weeks. MaXstar now has some company!

025/2026 has been another successful year for our Off-theBeach sailors. 41 hardy souls ventured out on to the water for our 2025 Winter series, with a total of 32 boats (five Flying Fifteens, 13 ILCAs, seven LT Windsurfers, three Optimists and four Pelicans) participating at some point during the series. Congratulations to the Consistency winners: Andrew Colquhoun and Leanne Fallows, Craig Williams, Murray Duthie, Doug Stewart, Ian Lane, William Carroll and Lailah and Ophelia Beck. I am sure that the post-sailing hot soup was greatly appreciated. We had a total of 80 boats competing during 2025-2026 summer series, consisting of 22 Flying Fifteens, 10 ILCA 4s, six ILCA 6s, six ILCA 7s, 11 LT Windsurfers, nine Open Skiffs, 6 Optimists. 2 125s, four 29ers and four Vipers. A further 34 Optimists sailed in the (noncompeting) Bronze and Green fleets and we expect that many of these will progress to competing in racing events over the next 12-24 months, which augurs well for the future. Congratulations to all the winners listed earlier in this Yearbook. SailGP is, without a doubt, the highest-profile yachting event in the world at the moment, and Western Australia hosted one round of this series in Fremantle in January. South of Perth Yacht Club was privileged to be asked to provide logistical support to the event. Our partnership with SailGP resulted in us providing equipment and volunteers to assist with launching and retrieving the boats and managing the Exclusion Zone. In addition, we were able to give 25 of our junior sailors behind-the-scenes access through Tech Site passes.

The excitement generated by SailGP, and our involvement in it, has had a measurable impact, with increased interest and enrolments in our sailing and sail training programs. We look forward to continuing the relationship in 2027 and beyond. The Club hosted 5 State Title regattas during the summer, for the Vipers, Flying Fifteens, Pelicans, LT Windsurfers and ILCAs. These all went off without a hitch courtesy of our dedicated on-water volunteers and on-water group staff. Special thanks to our Race Officers Martyn Compton, John Rooke and Phil Draber for their commitment and excellent work. We have a new World Champion in our Club - Kaison Puls won the Open Skiff World Titles held in Japan last year and backed that up with a 3rd in the Australian Titles and 1st in the WA State Titles. A well-deserved winner of the Club’s Centreboard Achievement Award, given to the sailor who has performed the best at combined Club, State, National and World titles.

A very close runner up was Club stalwart Nick Jerwood, who won National Titles in the DF65 and DF95 radio sailing yachts, and who also won the National Flying Fifteen title with daughter Enfys. Congratulations to you both. Another highlight of the year was the return of the Goolugatup Sailing Carnival in November 2025 after a hiatus of a few years. With over 100 boats participating over multiple race areas and in a variety of race formats, this was a major event. By all accounts, participants considered the regatta to be an outstanding and enjoyable success. Huge thanks to Stephen “Crowbar” Grover, ably assisted by David Luketina, On Water Group Manager Denis Jones and Sailing Administrator Matt Doyle and a large team of colunteers for making this such a success. The Goolugatup Sailing Carnival will be back later this year, and we are looking forward to building further on the success of last year’s event.

SOUTH OF PERTH YACHT CLUB INC SPECIAL PURPOSE FINANCIAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 JUNE 2026 TREASURER’S REVIEW Overview It is pleasing to report the Club achieved a materially improved operating result in 2026 with a surplus of $132,425 before prior period adjustments compared with the 2025 year where the Club incurred a deficit of $326,542 on a like for like basis. Whilst this represents a $458,967 turnaround in overall performance, there were a number of significant variances in terms of overall budget to actual performance. In particular, whilst the Food and Beverage (F&B) results were a significant improvement on the prior year, they remained unacceptably below budget expectations. The Club’s net debt position improved due to the improved operating result, the non-cash impact of depreciation and a restrained period of capital expenditure. There are a number of major maintenance and capital projects that need to be funded over the coming years from operating cashflows or additional drawdowns under our debt facilities. Long-term planning is currently hampered due to uncertainty concerning the terms of the renewal of the Club’s riverbed lease, which expires in June 2027. The Club is seeking to resolve this matter with relevant State Government departments as a priority. Given the uncertainty concerning the riverbed lease, the Club is aiming to achieve a similar budget surplus to the 2026 budget with improvements from F&B being the priority for the 2027 financial year. Whilst such an outcome is below the longer-term target, it is a realistic continuation of the transition over the last eighteen months towards restoring financial stability and strengthened governance. The Club enters the 2026-27 financial year with the recent appointment of a new General Manager and with a need to appoint a new Finance and Administration Manager. Hopefully these new appointments result in a period of stable management that will, over time, lead to further improvements in operational and financial performance. Food and Beverage Operations The F&B operations continued to experience reduced revenue and high wage costs, resulting in a net financial loss position. Employee expenses as a percentage of total F&B turnover continue to exceed historical and industry comparisons but did improve from prior year. Societal factors, including an aging membership demographic, cost of living pressures, cutbacks on discretionary spending and increased local competition have all contributed to reduced revenue, which is a trend being observed across the sector. The decision made last year to close F&B services on Mondays and Tuesdays was the right decision which resulted in a smaller overall loss than would have been incurred had that decision not been taken. The new General Manager has a clear mandate from the Management Committee to review the F&B operating model and to improve performance. Riverbed Lease and Capital Expenditure Projects The Club’s riverbed lease expires in June 2027. Whilst there has been regular and continued contact with the relevant State Government departments and regulatory authorities, progress has been slow. The final outcome remains uncertain and could potentially be the subject of protracted legal action or arbitration if a sensible and realistic outcome cannot be negotiated. Other river-based Clubs face a similar situation with their leases. The positive outcome achieved by the Fremantle Sailing Club concerning their infrastructure lease arrangements could well be a favourable precedent upon which we can place considerable reliance. 18

The uncertainties of the financial impact of future lease arrangements make long term planning, capital commitments and additional borrowings difficult and as such we continue to defer projects until such time as we can proceed with an acceptable degree of certainty and risk exposure. Projects involving solar power and battery storage are being further investigated. It is anticipated the reorganisation of the Club landholding should be finalised in the 2027 financial year after over ten years of work. This will involve the formalisation of a previously agreed land swap and in time the front gate being moved, at the Club’s expense, closer towards the roundabout on completion of the City of Melville work on the lower Goolagatup land. This is not a priority project at the moment. Cost Control Achievements A number of achievements have been made in the 2026 financial year in terms of wages control, better buying, power contract renegotiation and improved efficiency practices being implemented. At the same time, we face constant cost pressures where there is limited scope for cost reductions or alternative cheaper suppliers. We have a number of projects planned for the 2027 financial year including researching the conversion of the fuel bowser system to allow member credit card payments and the possible introduction of a member wallet system for food and beverage purchases. Both these projects are aimed at reducing the Club’s working capital tied up in member receivables and reducing staff time spent in managing receivables and debtor follow up. Computer Software and Accounting System Transition The implementation of the NorthStar accounting and management system has continued to present significant challenges. The process has involved substantial costs and required considerable time and effort from both staff and external consultants to resolve technical and operational issues. The Club has not yet utilised most of NorthStar’s value-added modules, which when enabled, should provide improved reporting and process efficiency. A dedicated committee has been established to review the Club’s broader information technology requirements and ensure future systems are better aligned with operational needs and correctly implemented. Software Licence Prior Period Adjustment & Fixed Asset Write-offs A review and reconciliation of the fixed asset register with the general ledger was undertaken and number of asset write-offs were made including: • •

an asset that no longer existed being a replacement motor for “Heathcote” that was separately capitalised an asset that was no longer functioning – being the ballroom air conditioning system that has been replaced with split systems.

These write-offs collectively amounted to $58,764. Software licences included in fixed assets, where the Club had a right to access, but did not have control of the software, were written off as the prior practice of capitalising these costs was inappropriate under accounting standards. The vast majority of these costs were incurred in 2024 and as such the write off of $96,224 has been reflected in the financial report as a prior period adjustment. Banking and Debt Facilities In February 2026 the Club’s banking facilities were renegotiated for a period of three years. Previously the Club had a fixed fully drawn bill facility of $3,000,000 that incurred interest and funding costs and various term deposits that earned interest and other funds in an operating account that did not earn interest. The Club also had a $2,700,000 business loan facility that did not offer flexible offset arrangements. The overall debt facilities were and remain at $5,700,000 but now are more flexible and will result in debt servicing cost savings going forward. The new bill facility, whilst fixed at $3,000,000, does not need to remain fully drawn thus allowing funds previously on term deposit and funds in the operating account to be utilised in offsetting interest bearing debt. 2 19 SoPYC Yearbook | 2025~2026

The new business loan of $2,700,000 does not have a redraw facility but does include an offset facility which creates an opportunity to draw down the facility in full, repay the bill facility and use the offset account balance like an overdraft. With proper Treasury management, based on current interest rates, the renegotiated facilities provide the Club with greater funds management flexibility and the potential for significant improvements in the net interest costs being incurred by the Club. Acknowledgments I wish to acknowledge the efforts of our staff during what has been another challenging period. Their commitment has been instrumental in supporting ongoing operational reviews and the implementation of planned changes aimed at improving cost control, operational efficiency, and member outcomes. In particular I would like to thank David Staniforth-Smith who stepped into the role of acting Finance and Administration Manager at short notice and who has been responsible for dealing with a number of legacy issues. I would also like to thank my Finance Committee, particularly John Hassen and also Graeme Monkhouse who have played a key role in addressing complex issues and contributing innovative ideas and strategic input to support the Club’s operational management and forward planning. Boating Activities: I have sailed as crew on a variety of cruisers from 1977 to 1990 including Josephine, Eunamara and Stardust. I have been a power boat owner since 1985 to the present and have been both navigator and skipper on various time trials including Conquest, Gamine and Shantoozie. Boating Activities: My family and I have two power boats and use them at least fortnightly. As well as enjoying cruising and water sports on the river, we support our two daughters in off-thebeach dingy sailing at the Club. We attend State and National junior regattas and, most recently, a World Championship in Italy.

Club Participation: Attend almost all Club social events, all Power Section and most Cruising Section events. Regular attendee at Chase the Ace Thursday as well as a consistent user of the Quarterdeck. Reason for Nominating: A believer of “If you want to help instigate change at a club, join a committee – don’t sit at the bar to whinge and complain.” I get a lot out of the Club and see the volunteer positions as an opportunity to give something back.

Over the past term, we’ve made significant progress in key areas that directly impact the Club’s future: • Led a two-year initiative to review and modernise the Club’s Rules and By-laws, culminating in the proposed move to a Board governance structure • Led the Club to deal with the overruns through a rationalisation of staffing levels and process improvements • Returned the Club to a fiscally sound position • Built a dedicated OWG Management Team to strengthen operational oversight • Engaged with the State Government regarding the Ferry Service proposal, which could have long-term implications for our Club • Initiated preparations for the 2027 lease negotiations • Started the process of introducing a management system designed to support long-term sustainability and improve Club operations As my term as Commodore comes to an end, I want to stay on the Management Committee to ensure that, if adopted by Members, the new Rules and By-laws are properly implemented, and the new Board is well supported over the coming years. This work has been a significant focus of mine, and I believe continuity through the transition is important to getting it right. GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT Brad Beames

t the time of writing this I have been in the General Manager role for two weeks. Accordingly, it is best that I provide a brief personal introduction and focus on the future of the Club, rather than to comment on the prior year. For some of you, seeing me again at the Club is a flashback to times past. Up until 2022 I held a crew membership for 10 years sailing as the bowman on Farrago and Sagacious IV (both 40+ foot keelboats). Those 10 years were preceded by sailing out of Sandringham YC (Victoria)… so yes; I’m a Victorian born and raised but have lived here in Perth for the past 14 years. I have been married for 16 years and we have a 6 year old daughter. Aside from sailing I also enjoy mountain biking and being a dad. As a crew member I never much

got involved with the running of the Club; so this past two weeks has provided me an opportunity to see the ‘other side’ of how the Club works. I’ve learnt a lot and will continue learning for some time. I take comfort that the team I have to support me is committed to doing the best for the members, and I see many similarities (amongst some obvious differences) in leading the Administration of the Club with other client service or member service roles I’ve held previously. I look forward to meeting many of you personally and, together with the Administration team, serving our Club and its members to the very best of our ability. We will undoubtedly face challenges along the way, but I am confident that the opportunities before us far outweigh them.

POWER SECTION REPORT Justine Barron

s we write this report for the Yearbook, the Power Yacht Section is well into the 2026 Time Trialling season. Like many sporting organisations, participation numbers have remained steady, a testament to the enthusiasm of our committee, members and wider community. The committee continues to encourage new members to compete, volunteer and participate in the many social events for which the Power Section is renowned. These gatherings make our section more than simply a calendar of on-water events. The 2025 season, led enthusiastically by Interim Power Yacht Captain Troy Dalglish and Vice Captain Robin Wilcockson, brought fresh energy and ideas to our events and activities. We saw encouraging participation, strong attendance and social events that were bigger and more enjoyable than ever. Whether on the water or ashore, members embraced opportunities to volunteer, compete, celebrate and contribute to the vibrant spirit of the Power Yacht Section. Fleet participation remained strong across club events and the CPYA State Heats. These events showcased our competitive spirit while contributing significantly to the Club's overall results and highlighting the strong connection between club and statelevel competition. Behind the scenes, the committee continued refining events, improving the competitor experience and ensuring flag winners were recognised with quality prizes. These achievements would not be possible without the generosity of our sponsors, many of whom have supported the section for many years. Their commitment remains a cornerstone of our success, enabling us to honour tradition while embracing opportunities for future growth.

The 2025 season concluded in October with the annual Prize Night in the Wardroom. It was a wonderful evening celebrating competition and member achievements. Congratulations to all recipients and participants on a successful season. Blue Kipper and Tikkityboo shared the Best Dressed honours, capturing the creativity and enthusiasm of the fleet. The event

is open to members and guests, and anyone who has not attended is encouraged to join us. In 2026, the committee remains strong, combining new members with returning representatives. Following his term as Interim Captain, IPC Troy Dalglish stepped aside, with newly elected Captain Neil Howie taking the helm alongside returning Vice Captain Robin Wilcockson. his year, the Pens and Moorings Committee focused on maintaining safe, wellutilised water and land mooring assets while improving allocation processes, supporting marina compliance, and helping members keep their boats active and secure. The Pens and Moorings Committee comprised Ash Hicks (Chair), PC Frank Dalglish, Mike Markham, John Cooper, Anton Jennings, Gordon Dunbar and Neil White. This stable volunteer team brings many decades of club membership, broad boating experience, detailed boat and member knowledge, and representation across the club’s boating areas. Although the primary function of the Pens and Moorings Committee is to allocate pens, a busy volunteer team also works alongside the Committee to complete marina safety compliance inspections. These inspections occur when a boat enters the club and then every three years thereafter. The inspection team is managed by Mike Markham and comprises Mike, Mark Hayman, Daryll Wilkes, Bruce Uren, Brian Smith, John Spanos and our new recruit, Damien Arundel. With more than 200 inspections to complete each year, each taking around 30 minutes, this team works hard to keep the club safe from fire, pollution events, boat damage and sinking events. The Committee is supported in the club office by the Facilities Administrator. Following Natalie Bradshaw’s promotion to Business Improvement Manager / Club Secretary last year, Sophie Read stepped up from reception into the Facilities Administrator role, while also supporting Membership. She brought enthusiasm and a strong focus on member satisfaction, but left in June 2026 to pursue her dream job in the real estate industry. We wish her well. Natalie continued to support P&M while we recruited Sophie’s replacement, and we were pleased to welcome Cameron Berg to the role in July. Cameron has a strong boating background at FSC where he

is a member, along with significant administration experience. With water and land pens now at near 100% occupancy, waiting until monthly committee meetings to make pen allocations has not supported member satisfaction. To respond more quickly to boats arriving and departing the club, the Committee has introduced mid-month pen allocations through circular email resolutions. This has significantly improved the member experience, particularly for new boat purchases. Behind the scenes, the Committee continues to review and streamline processes, improve utilisation of the club’s pens to maximise revenue and member participation, and support the club’s purpose as a member-driven organisation that promotes active sailing and power boating rather than passive marina use. Where boats are not being used and have fallen into neglect, the Committee is communicating with those members about realistic next steps in their boat ownership journey. Reconfiguration of the first part of Jetty 7 with floating fingers remains under consideration. However, the project depends on increased pen demand and available CAPEX funding in an environment of competing CAPEX priorities. Finally, a project to improve mooring lines over the second half of 2026 will see a number of members contacted to rectify deficiencies. Correct placement and tensioning of springer lines plays an important role in taking strain off our finger jetties, as does the use of rubber compensator devices on short mooring lines. The Committee looks forward to continued positive member engagement as we work to protect the club’s water and land mooring assets and members’ boats.

he Works Committee has continued a program of maintenance, upgrades and forward planning across the Club, with a strong focus on safety, asset preservation and improving member facilities. Planned upgrade of Jetties 6 and 7, including the progressive replacement of deteriorated decking with durable FRP panels and associated structural improvements has started and is budgeted for annually along with trial replacement electrical pedestals. The Bosuns Club provided valuable volunteer assistance with the Jetty 7 repairs following a boat impact. Building and facility maintenance has continued across the Club, ensuring facilities remain safe, functional and well maintained. The team has maintained all our vessels to a high standard and had them available when required for on water support. Progress has also been made on infrastructure projects, including planning for rock rearmouring between Jetties 1, 2, 3 and 7, undertaken in consultation with DBCA and relevant environmental requirements and is planned for Q4 this year. The Bosuns Club continues to make a significant contribution by assisting the Facilities Manager through volunteering. This support across the Club’s maintenance program provides a substantial practical contribution and delivers significant cost savings to the Club, while reflecting the strong spirit of member involvement. MAINTAINLY, our asset management software, is now available through the SOPYC App, providing members with a convenient way to report maintenance issues and allowing the Club to better track, allocate and manage maintenance items. Overall, the Works Committee, Facilities Manager, Bosuns Club, staff and volunteers have made a valuable contribution to maintaining and upgrading the Club’s facilities while supporting effective long-term planning.

SoPYC Youth Training, Travel and Development Fund Pty Ltd – Annual Report FY2025–26

he South of Perth Yacht Club Youth Training, Travel and Development Fund continues to strengthen its position as a long-term investment in the future of sailing. Established by the Club's membership as an independent incorporated entity, YTTD Pty Ltd structure, the Fund exists to support the development of young SoPYC sailors by providing financial assistance as they progress through local, national and international competition. Unlike operational club funding, the Fund has been deliberately structured as a standalone entity, governed by its own Board of Directors through a corporate trustee under a registered Trust Deed. This governance model ensures that the Fund's assets remain dedicated solely to their intended purpose, protected from the day-to-day financial requirements of the Club, while reflecting the best-practice youth

development funding models adopted by Australia's leading yacht clubs. During the 2025–26 financial year, the Fund awarded grants totalling $9,000 to four outstanding young sailors: Harriet Mellor, Luke Carrick, Murray Duthie and Charlie Purt. Their campaigns saw SoPYC represented at major regattas across North America, Europe and Australia, demonstrating the breadth of opportunity made possible through the Fund. Each recipient has provided a report on their experiences, with these stories shared through Club newsletters and on the Club website, highlighting both the value of the assistance provided and the achievements of our emerging sailors. The year also marked a transition in leadership. Following three years of dedicated service, Barry Arnold retired as Chairman. The Board extends its sincere appreciation to Barry for his leadership during

the Fund's formative years. David Atkinson has assumed the role of Chairman and is joined by Directors David Squires, James Newcombe and Mark Nicholas. Together they bring significant experience in corporate governance, sailing development and athlete pathways. The Board is currently progressing plans for a broader fundraising campaign to attract donations and bequests from supporters beyond the Club membership, further strengthening the Fund's long-term capacity. At the time of writing, several new grant applications are under consideration to support sailors contesting the forthcoming European summer regattas and the Australian national championship season. The independently reviewed financial statements will be published on the Club website as soon as practicable following completion of the annual review.

LADIES LUNCHEON GROUP Ann McCluskey

ollowing on from last year, our lunches have gone from strength to strength. All of our amazing guest speakers have been very well received and were interesting, inspiring and more often than not, uplifting. July was the annual Christmas in July luncheon and our first one as the new committee. Thankfully, the past committee of Val, Rose and Lana already had the menu in place, thus making the transition a bit easier

although we were very much still ‘Deers in the headlights’ at that point. The August lunch featured Len Randell OAM, one of our fine members and gentleman who, in his 99th year, is a very popular fellow member, sailor and Vice Patron of this Club. We simply had to open this lunch up to the male members as well. Len shared tales of his early life and how, among other things, he became WA’s first professionally qualified Naval Architect and Designer. September prison officer Vicki blew us away with stories of life on the inside and the challenges and rewards that go with the job. At the October lunch, Sound Massage Practitioner Ramona Vlaar describe the amazing effects of sound therapy techniques which relax, soothe and bring a new energy to our bodies. Attending one of her sessions myself, after an hour, I left feeling relaxed and refreshed, well worth the time spent. David Beard, a physiologist and author, joined us for our November lunch. David provided us with some basic ideas and exercises we could adapt to easily, as we get older. David’s book If I’d Only Known I Would Live This Long, covers areas of health, fitness, nutrition and more; a very

good and important read. December’s Christmas lunch combined the usual uplifting camaraderie with a touch of early festive shopping. The afternoon took a magical turn when local choir ‘One Achord’ appeared as a surprise flash mob. The tasty Christmas lunch afternoon was finished off nicely as we danced away to the tunes of DJ Di. In February, magician Steve Silk won us over with his tricks, witty stories and sense of humour. Taking the time to visit every table, Steve also performed a special dedication for our lovely Norma, who celebrated her 100th birthday in March of this year. A Fashion Parade took centre stage at the March lunch. Kings Park Fashion provided a collection of their clothes for a number of our regulars to walk the Catwalk. April marked the second time that the men have been invited to join us for lunch. Motivational speaker Tony Mowbray shared his harrowing experience fighting for survival during the tragic 1998 Sydney to Hobart yacht race. His energy was amazing and his stories harrowing, almost like listening to a very scary movie about survival. In May, Chloe from the local ‘Studio Pilates’ studio told us how Pilates makes you stronger from head to toe and how good it is for everyone. Following the lunch, some of our ladies (and men) have since joined her studio in Applecross. Fellow member April Jorgenson gave an exceptional talk at our June ladies lunch. April has many many years as a National Board Member of the Hunger Project Australia, working in some of the world’s most disadvantaged communities where hunger is a daily reality and women and girls are often denied basic human rights. Absolutely riveting. The ladies’ lunch committee meets monthly to ensure that our regular guest speakers continue to be entertaining, educational or just plain every day, nice people. My special thanks go to the other ladies on the committee – Judi Cross, Sue Smith and Lana Kaaks, for enabling this wonderful tradition to continue.

he Almanac grows likes a mushroom and it appears that once it was let out of the box, we’ve had a number of very good suggestions toward items that appear to have been left out. For starters, the Rodney Nott Shield had to go in and then a suggestion that the Cruising Division needed to be represented as well. So, in they went as well. The Billy Run; how on earth did they miss that one? It’s been part of the Club since the early 1960’s and has been a standard item for every red-blooded male ever since. However, the Club magazines didn’t always record the results, so we are searching the old records. A recent invitation to clean out a cupboard at the back of the reception area has discovered more old folders and files including a large number of floppy discs that may hold wonders. If we can open them that is. As we are pushed for space, they will remain there, in as safe a place as we can find. A recent enquiry by a researcher of the Maritime Museum had the local historians of the river looking carefully at the older maps of the river. Most of us will know of ‘Butlers Hump’ where RFBYC is situated, but did you know there were two other ‘Humps’ on the river. One where Point Dundas is (The Western Hump) and Heathcote, known as the Canning

or Eastern Hump. One bright Saturday afternoon in December 1887, a boat load of sailors took off up to Lucky Bay, turned at the mark (probably Bricklanding) and came down the river on a boisterous sea-breeze. As might be expected everything didn’t go to plan and the boat went to the bottom and resides there still. The crew then set out for the nearest shore, nearly a mile away, which just happened to be the Western Hump. (The Majestic) Four of the five made it, the last one didn’t and the event was responsible for one of the first major decisions by the yacht racing fraternity. Life preservers became an essential item for each boat. Every now and then, an old member comes along with a surprise and recently the Club was offered a set of drafting instruments for boats dating back to the early to mid-20th Century. We are in the process of having them verified and will display them in the Juniper Cabinet. Many thanks to the family of P/C and Life

At present we are scanning the old management records and the hope is that these will be available for member research once the Club has found a little more room for us, to allow the Archives a permanent home. he Bosuns club has been busy this year with one of our members, Theo Berden doing a sterling job in raising almost $8000 for the bosuns club and incidentally helping to clear a lot of the corners of the club in doing so. Early in August last year we were asked to assist in the replacing of a number of metres of floor in the marquee after some water had got in and shortly thereafter, we had to take one of the park benches to pieces and give that a new lease of life. Of course, our job entails repairing and refurbishing the bar furniture and the doors and frames around the centreboard club house and that was taken in hand by the bosuns club. Every winter, it has been a commitment to overhaul and check all the club PFD’s and while most

were in fine condition, some were past their useful life. The skiff rowers weren’t forgotten and our assistance was put behind the work on the oars to make them more competitive under the eyes of Alan Sharpe who seems to have a knack for these things. At the same time, we were drilling more holes in the ground as the tiedowns for the Western Hardstand progressed. We hope to have them completed this winter. The Commodore asked for a plinth for the club cannon and after a couple of false starts (square/oblong/ round) the plinth was finished using the skills of Bob Motteram and the fully refurbished cannon was placed on top of it, just in time for Sailing Opening Day. A number of the club containers were spruced up and given a lick of white paint and well done to

Dave Roberts and Gordon Roe who spearheaded that task. The major task for the summer/ autumn period was the planning and building of the skiff shed, providing much needed cover for the two St Ayles skiffs that had languished in the summer sun and winter rain for almost two years. Doing this has incidentally freed up two more hard stand pens for the club to gain income with, so for everyone it’s been a winwin project. We must recognise the work done by the refuelling and maintenance teams who look after the club boats and free the club bosuns for more productive work in the club. Most of the team are named here: Doug Cowie, Dave Roberts, Bruce Cadee, Bob Harrap, Eric Schwab, Theo Berden, Brian Cross, John Midolo, Bruce Uren, Campbell Stewart, Rick Steuart, Mark Abercrombie, Bob Motteram, Kevin Doig, Alan Sharpe, Nick Sharples, Gordon Roe, Phil Draber and everyone else whose names we have inadvertently missed. We look to more work over winter in repair and restoration of club furniture and equipment, but of course we can only do this with the necessary skill sets. ST AYLES SKIFF REPORT | Bruce Cadee

outh of Perth skiff rowers have remained active over the past year, with at least one boat on the water twice a week. Our own Adrian Newy (aka Alan Sharpe, aka Plonky) has been busy refining the timber oar, determined to improve on our second place in last year’s Australia Five time trial. We stresstested oars, measured catch angles, took anthropometric measurements, raised seats and moved thole pins in an effort to perfect technique and maximise efficiency. While the blokes wanted to row for sheep stations, the ladies reminded them to stop and smell the coffee. We are, after all, here for the simple pleasure of being on the water, selfpropelled, exercising in the fresh air and enjoying the pelicans and dolphins. Our rowers attended numerous events, which, in addition to rowing, seemed to share a common theme of food and drink: Christmas by the Swan: SoPYC skiffs joined the “Skiffy Xmas”, hosted by the East Fremantle Skiff Association (EFSA) at the Swan Yacht Club. After a hearty BBQ breakfast, we rowed in company around the Swan River. SoPYC won Best Crew for our magnificent Christmas costumes and Peter’s tinsel-wrapped oars. Veterans’ Health Week: SoPYC again proudly supported Veterans’ Health Week, joining EFSA friends at Navy League HQ in January. Several veterans shared stories about the work they do to support themselves and others dealing with the ongoing impacts of service in the Australian Defence Force. Following a row around the North Fremantle river, we enjoyed Charlie’s BBQ, a few tipples and the fellowship of rowing friends on a beautiful summer morning. Margaret River: A weekend south saw us sampling local produce and joining Augusta and Nannup rowers on the pristine Blackwood River. HMAS Perth Memorial Regatta: For the second consecutive year, SoPYC was represented by a St Ayles skiff crew at the Nedlands Yacht Club regatta in February. The event commemorated those who lost their lives, and the survivors who became prisoners of war, following

the sinking of HMAS Perth during the Battle of Sunda Strait on 1 March 1942. Following the formal proceedings, SoPYC and EFSA crews rowed in fresh winds, demonstrating St Ayles Community Rowing to regatta dignitaries and spectators. ‘All the Rivers Run’: March’s highlight was organised by the Albany Maritime Foundation to celebrate Albany’s bicentenary. Eight SoPYC rowers travelled south, joining crews from Albany, Denmark, Freshwater Bay, East Fremantle, Nannup, Augusta and Ballina for a series of ‘raids’ across the Great Southern, rowing pristine rivers and inlets among majestic tall timbers and wilderness. We began with a challenging row across Princess Royal Harbour, followed by a picnic at secluded Vancouver Beach. That evening, we enjoyed an Australia II supper, where legendary crew member John Longley regaled us with tales of the iconic 1983 America’s Cup victory. John built WA’s first skiff in 2016 and was a keen participant in the event. Over the week, we clocked up 75 km on the Kalgan, Denmark, Frankland and Donnelly Rivers. The event concluded in Augusta with a leisurely row up the Scott River and around Molloy Island, followed

by a BBQ lunch, where SoPYC was awarded the ‘Black Jack Sally’ trophy for Champion Team. Catalpa Reenactment: Rowers travelled to Rockingham to recreate the infamous 1876 escape of six Fenians, Irish political prisoners, from Fremantle Gaol. The skiff carried six “Fenians” and completed several rows past the crowd on the beach. The day, naturally, concluded with Guinness! 2026 Australia Five: A mixed crew rowed flat out into a stiff southerly for 5 km, from Nedlands buoy to the SoPYC outer start mark and back, recording 35 minutes and two seconds. Although 45 seconds slower than last year, this was enough to retain second place in Australia for a mixed crew using regulation timber oars. Our activities extend beyond rowing. We were recruited to paint roof trusses for the new Skiff shed being built by the Bosun’s Club, providing more opportunities for fellowship and fostering a greater sense of ownership of our skiffs. SoPYC owns two St Ayles Skiffs, Valkyrie and Ballina. Designed in Scotland and supplied as kits, they were built by Bosun’s Club members. The skiffs are rowed regularly on Sunday and Tuesday mornings by people of all ages and abilities and are available to Club members at other times. SAILING SECTION REPORT Victoria Blanckensee

he 2025–2026 sailing season saw steady participation across the keelboat fleets, with consistent racing and ongoing efforts to strengthen the structure and delivery of Club sailing. Racing throughout the season remained competitive across all divisions, supported by regular fleet engagement and a willingness to review and refine race formats where needed. Division representatives continued to work with the Sailing Committee to assess course configurations and ensure racing remains both practical and fair for the range of boats competing. Fleet development remains an area of focus. There are positive signs of growth in Division Three, with additional boats expected to join next season, while other fleets continue to explore ways to maintain and rebuild participation. The SS22 fleet has taken steps toward developing, reflecting a broader intent to support long-term sustainability across classes and the Red Witches have gone from strength to strength with additional boats and diverse racing formats to keep things interesting for the growing fleet. New boats joining the Club also indicate continued interest in keelboat racing at South of Perth.

The Sailing Committee has continued to focus on improving race management and operational consistency. A review of handicap structures is underway to address inconsistencies across fleets and to improve the relevance of results. Safety considerations have also remained a priority, particularly in relation to mark usage and coordination with other river users, with ongoing efforts to raise and resolve these issues through the appropriate channels. Planning for future seasons has been progressed, including confirmation of key calendar dates and the intention to schedule and publish coaching opportunities within the sailing program. Aligning racing with major external events has also been considered to minimise disruption while maintaining participation. Member engagement continues to be an important area. Work is underway to improve initiatives such as the proposed “Boats for Sale” platform and to ensure better integration of new members into sailing activities. The Crewfinder system remains available to support connections between boats and crew, although activity levels have been relatively steady.

The delivery of the racing program would not be possible without the contribution of volunteers and Club staff. The support of the On Water Group team has been instrumental in ensuring the smooth coordination of racing, events and training throughout the season. Their work, combined with that of our amazing volunteers including Race Officers, start teams and committee members, ensures that the sailing program continues to operate effectively. The Sailing Committee will move into the next season under new leadership, as I step away from the role of Captain. I would like to acknowledge and thank all members who have served on the Committee during my tenure. Your contribution has been defined by a genuine commitment to the sport of sailing and a considered approach to supporting our fleets and their members. The work undertaken over this time provides a solid foundation, and I am confident the Committee will continue to build on this with a focus on participation, consistency, and the ongoing development of keelboat sailing at South of Perth Yacht Club. DIVISION 1 REPORT Dave Thoms & Crowbar

he Wednesday Fleet continues to thrive with ten boats regularly competing, but our Saturday Fleet continues to struggle with numbers. The Wednesday Spring Series enjoyed traditional Southwest breezes which favoured the low handicappers with K-Factor easily winning the series followed by Mistress Quickly and Wicked in third. The Wednesday Summer Series had a mixture of light breezes which helped the light and fast Tora Tobu take out the series very closely followed by Wicked and Mistress Quickly in third. The Saturday Series has been poorly represented with only three regular competitors and a couple of others joining at different times through the season. Credit to Tapestry, Freo Doctor and K-Factor for consistently turning up and keeping the flag flying. Unfortunately, the Club Championship is a disappointment as it is run on the ORC rating system which further restricts the number of competitors. Despite this we successfully tried the Combine Fleet racing with RPYC and will continue again next year with a few improvements from lessons learnt. Congratulations to Tapestry who dominated all the races during the Saturday Summer. As usual there are numerous rumblings and rumours around the bar about boats entering and leaving the Division. We are happy to have the

additions of Haywire and Courtesan to the fleet , the possibility of Eu Na Mara returning. The rumour of a mystical Melges 32 joining our fleet is confirmed with top flight sailors Craig and Janette Hanson will have their new charger at the Club later in the year. This will follow competing in the Hamilton Island Race Week with an assembly of luminaries and all round yachting Stars from SoPYC. You will all do us proud, we are sure. STOP PRESS: At the time of writing further addition to Division 1 is purported to be joining from our brother club in Matilda Bay. He is a long term (ancient?) sailor with strong family connections to SoPYC. Great to see Tim Harrison bring Courtesan back to the Club, it has a long successful history at SoPYC before it spent a hiatus down at Bunbury. We have again had a successful time at the Regattas for some of our fleet who have ventured out under the bridges. Congratulations to K-Factor who defended the Division 2 title at the Cockburn Regatta which was a lead into the great success of the SoPYC yachts who competed at the Geographe Bay Regatta. April and her crew on Murphy’s Law came close to defending their title in Division 1, Spritzig II built on their amazing record of continued attendance and

Wicked had a great regatta taking home the trophy in Premier Division. The Diggers Cup was very well represented by SoPYC with 12 boats competing out of a fleet of 69 starters but it was Wicked who showed their class coming 5th in a very competitive race, matching Tora Tobu's effort of the previous year We also need to recognise the contribution of our skippers and crew who compete in the blue water events on the ocean. Although we struggle to have many SoPYC boats go under the bridges there are large numbers of people who venture out in the blue on the ocean racers. The recently completed Fremantle to Albany Race had 11 starters of which nine completed the race. On those boats we had SOPYC members on Sagacious IV, Wyuna and Alfresco to whom we pass on our congratulations for completing this gruelling race and proudly flying the SoPYC burgee. The task for us all as we move forward is to encourage participation and develop interesting racing that will attract more competitors out on the river. As the world changes we must also find ways to reinvent ourselves to ensure sailing continues into the future. How exciting is this new season going to be (get the defib. ...Quick!) with numbers up, new yachts and combinations, quality sailing throughout the fleet with possibly some fresh courses? I do not envy the handicapper’s task who, by the way, is doing an outstanding job! In closing may we highlight the words of Club inspiration Len Randell with his oft-repeated saying “Just Keep Sailing” ( J.K.S. ).

t has been another successful season for the SS22 fleet albeit with a small fleet. The competition between the top three boats has been intense with many highly enjoyable, friendly close tussles. The class provides very inexpensive one design racing with enthusiastic support available to all. The fleet has continued to suffer from lack of participation in the season just completed. The decline has been continuous over the last 15 years with the vast majority of boats that change hands moving away from the Club. The continuing strength of the fleet is rooted in in the participation in the SS22 State Championships series where we join boats from EFYC and CYC in a series of seven races. These

races are well liked by the fleet as it facilitates sailing against boats from the other clubs at 6 locations around the river. David Mickle’s Mele Bilo III had a back-out season coming second in the State championship and winning the State consistency. At the Club level Mele Bilo III won both the Championship and the Consistency series. It was great to see Murray McLean’s Finovola participating on a regular basis and this was rewarded by coming second in the Club Championship and third in the State Championship. The fleet was shocked to hear

mid-season that Matt Worley had suffered a major cardiac event which resulted in him having to sell Eutopia. Unfortunately, the boat has left the Club. We all wish Matt the very best and hope that when he regains his strength and confidence he may rejoin us at least as a crew member. Excitingly, previous member Andrew Muhling has brought his boat Parking Space back to the Club. He is a very keen and capable sailor so his presence is highly anticipated. he SS27 Association enjoyed another well contested State Championship competition with hosting of the six heats being shared by four of the most prominent clubs on the river. Another very solid performance by Elise Stevenson [Manners] and her crew, saw Carrageen II (RF190) again secure the State Championship. In the State Competition, the registered racing fleet of 10 yachts saw an average participation rate of seven, with the biggest fleet being nine. Some six yachts sailed in all State Championship races. SoPYC continues to house the majority of Spacesailer 27s in the metro area. Participation numbers in the club competition remained steady. From the registered racing fleet of nine yachts at the Club, we saw an average participation rate of over six yachts, with the biggest fleet being seven. The fleet remains strong with a depth of competition. Some three yachts sailed in all Club Championship races. We have enjoyed some very close competition in both, the Club, State or Association level competitions in an enthusiastic yet always sporting spirit. In the Wednesday afternoon autumn racing series for Division 3, David Hanham (Random Times) placed first, while Brian Easterbrook

(Lady Claire) placed second. In the Wednesday afternoon spring racing series for Division 3, Brian Easterbrook (Lady Claire) placed first while Brian Saleeba (Abeelas) placed second. ‘Most Improved over the Season’ in the State Competition

Lady Claire Brian Easterbrook SP541 Congratulations to all skippers and crews. A non-competitive highlight of the season was again the annual Twilight Cruise for the Parkinson’s Association. Of the now 20 SS27s on the Club registry, 10 turned up on a pleasant evening in February to take out a party of 40 Parkinson’s Association Members and carers on their annual sailing outing. We were blessed with a very pleasant evening which was enjoyed by all. No new Life Memberships of the Spacesailer 27 Association were bestowed this season. Wednesday J&M Sailing

An active group of S80s sailed regularly in the Club’s Wednesday J&M series. Fair Game helmed by Sue Game capped off some great post-Christmas sailing with a convincing win in the Summer Series. Shadowfax (Mark and Jim Gooding) was a consistent performer. New owner Dave Roberts started sailing his boat Abbey Road on Wednesdays with great success straight off the bat. Vintage Red was sailed by Dean Picot and Dave Spencer, and more lately by new owner Dale Jordan. Well done all!

S80 Metropolitan Championship Series

regatta was held at Koombana Bay over the Australia Day long weekend. After two days, Shadowfax, helmed by Mark Gooding, took out the win by the smallest of margins, just one point, with the deciding race going down to literally a just a few centimetres at the finish line! The first metropolitan S80 to take out the SW title in its eight year history.

As aways, an early start to the S80 Class season with the start of the Metropolitan Championship series, where we sail the opening days of all the major river clubs (EFYC, SoPYC, RPYC & RFBYC). Each year in the Metro series we are traditionally invited by the various clubs in a very welcoming and friendly atmosphere. The winner of the Metro Championship was Shadowfax helmed by Mark Gooding, followed by RP’s Rum Runner John Ghul in second, and third was Don’t Panic!! helmed by Mat Selby with only a few points separating all three boats.

The S80 States trophy again remains firmly at SoPYC with Shadowfax helmed by Jim Gooding taking out the 2026 S80 State Championship held over the long weekend in Cockburn Sound. In tight racing, it was a great last day come from behind win by the Shadowfax crew of Jim Gooding, Peter Botman, Mark Gooding, Simon Griffiths and Duncan Parker. Just two SoPYC boats ventured down for the series but both had terrific results. Don’t Panic!! Mat Selby and crew finished second by just a few points.

S80 Swan River Championships

sailed over two Saturday afternoons as windward-leeward events, combined with our normal Saturday fleets. We had more than enough sea breeze at times with some exciting spinnaker runs. Mark Gooding and his crew on Shadowfax, won the Swan River Championship OTL on a tie-break from RP’s Christian Christiansen on Fusion in some very tight racing.

2026 S80 Legends Race

Wednesday 15th April saw RPYC host the 2026 S80 Association Legends Race with 12 boats and crews from RPYC and SoPYC hitting the water. The aim of the S80 Legends event is to connect our current community of S80 sailors with past S80 sailors and to celebrate the S80 Class. The event kicked off with a luncheon in the River Room where everyone got a chance to catch up with old friends and have a beer before getting out on the water, in true legend fashion. Congratulations to Simon Cunningham for his win on Fusion. Andre Linthorne on Don’t Panic!! finished a very close second and Geoff Bishop on Shadowfax close behind in third. John Hassen on Abbey Road finished in fourth.

S80 Teams Race – South Perth “Pirates” vs Royal Perth “Catalinas” The second S80 Teams Race of the season saw the holders of the cup RPYC’s Catalina’s team facing off again the SoPYC’s Pirates team. Plenty of boat-on-boat tactics throughout the race, all within the RRS and common sense. Whilst RPYC turned out in force, it was the SoPYC Pirates that took out the win convincingly and of course the all-important end of season bragging rights. The Teams Race format kept everyone on their toes for the entire race and was another great way to enjoy our sailing.

reminder, that the SoPYC “H28 Class Division” was established in February 1963 and that our sailing competition has sailed continuously for 63 years! A remarkable record, noting that SoPYC is the only known sailing club in the world to have raced these wooden built L Francis Herreshoff 28s, as a single class. A highlight during the 2025/2026 year, was an acknowledgement of the fleet’s history and current sailing competition in a 7-page article published in the October 2025 issue of the USA Wooden Boat magazine, which incidentally, has a worldwide distribution of 60,000 subscribers. The article, and accompanying photos, were provided by a UK-based journalist Nigel Sharp who visited our Club in February last year. Yes, we are an ageing fleet with many of our yachts having been constructed 60 to 70 years ago.

Several of our existing fleet have been reconstructed and all have been subjected to a labour of love over the years. Notably, John Wright, who is the oldest member of our fleet has, in recent years, spared no expense with a major rebuild, inside and out, of his pride and joy, Anna, including the installation of a brand new diesel engine with a new

stainless steel folding propellor, new sails and finally, he has protected his precious asset with a new sail cover. Anna is now in a much better

condition than it was twenty years ago. Ralph Newton has also made a significant improvement to Alma since he acquired it about two years ago and entered our fleet competition. There is no doubt that the camaraderie within our sailing group and the enjoyment experienced by our members, encourages our sailing longevity. Not only is John Wright the oldest member of our fleet, but he has been sailing Anna continuously since 1994 (32 years). Glen Stanley crewed aboard Wynella with the original owner/builder Don Bourne from the early 1980s before officially joining the Club in 1985 and has sailed in the fleet continuously to the present time. Other members of the fleet who have been around since the 1980s are Rita Nesdale, Phil Lammonby and the author. We still have 13 H28s listed on the Club’s boat register and similarly as last year, we have maintained nine yachts racing with some regularity during the year. Jim Spittle has retired recently and has now commenced sailing Napea of Carrick this year during the frostbites and Wednesday competition late in the year. However, we have not been able to find a sailor to take over The First Jindarra, which is in a fair condition and could be racing with little preparation. This vessel which holds the record of six consecutive Club Championships between 2014/2015 and 2019/2020 is available for free to anyone who is prepared to commit to regular sailing in our competition. If no one comes forward before November this vessel will be offered for sale outside the Club or sadly, may be stripped and destroyed. Speaking of Club Championships, David Locke has taken Corella this year to three consecutive Club Championships, well and truly on his way to creating a new record. So watch this space! The season as it was – all sailing results concerning the year’s prize night were published in the Autumn issue of Soundings. Saturday Racing Series Participation is marginally less than the previous year with one race having six yachts, seven races with

five yachts, 10 races with four yachts, two races with three yachts and two races with two yachts. Aloha and Wynella sailed all 22 races, Swiftsure Saga 18 races, Nerrima 15 races, Alma seven races, Corella 6 six races, Napea of Carrick two races and Mariner one race. Midweek Racing Series – The following participation figures are from Opening Day 5th October 2025 to Saturday 19th August 2026. A total of 42 races were conducted during the seasons. Seven yachts competed in seven races, six yachts in 18 races, 54 yachts in nine races, four yachts in one race, three yachts in five races, two yachts in 1one race and one yacht in one race.

Swiftsure Saga sailed in 39 races, Wynella in 38 races, Alma in 33 races, Mariner in 29 races, Corella in 25 races, Anna in 24 races, Nerrima in 22 races and Napea of Carrick in six races. Finally, in closing, I am pleased to have the opportunity to congratulate Brian Cross and his good lady Judi for both their 100% commitment and unquestionable resolve in addressing their respective responsibilities as Commodore and First Lady during Brian’s tenure in high office. A Landmark Season – 1,000 On-Water Experiences

he 2025–26 season was as a milestone year for Sailability@SoPYC. Across 30 sailing sessions between October and May, we achieved exactly 1,000 on-water experiences – comprising 794 participant sailings and 206 carer experiences. It is a remarkable achievement, but more importantly, it represents 1,000 opportunities for people to experience freedom, connection and enjoyment on the Swan River. Each Wednesday, participants of all abilities come to the Club to enjoy time on the water in a safe, welcoming and supportive environment. Once the boats leave the jetty labels and limitations fade away; participants are simply sailors enjoying the river, the breeze and the freedom that sailing provides. For many, it is the highlight of their week. For carers, it also provides an opportunity to relax, connect with others and enjoy a brief respite knowing their loved one is safe and having fun. Across the season a typical session saw around 30 participants on the water, supported by our dedicated

team of volunteers. Throughout the season we became increasingly adept at adaption. In the past the weather would see us cancelling sessions, particularly when the breeze was too much for safe operations. This year only four sessions were lost to weather. Courtesy of some innovation and pragmatism, on five other occasions winds unsuitable for the Hansa 303 dinghies did not stop us. By utilising keelboats and Waylen Bay and staying in the sheltered waters of the Canning River, participants still enjoyed meaningful time on the river. What once might have been a cancelled day became another opportunity to create memorable experiences. The season also saw the addition of new Hansa 303 dinghies, through the welcome support of the State Government and local MLA Kim Gidens. Named in honour of longtime volunteers Mark "Pops" Popham and John Meldrum, our new additions provide a daily reminder of the contribution of individuals whose dedication has helped shape the programme over many years. Off the water, the annual Bunnings

Sausage Sizzle raised more than $2,400 for equipment, maintenance and programme operations. We were also proud to participate in the Club’s Cruising Butterflies event, with CrossRoads contributing to the day alongside the broader SoPYC community. Looking ahead, we are excited by the prospect of CrossRoads participating in Club racing with a sailor with disability as part of the crew, reflecting our commitment to creating pathways beyond recreational sailing and into wider Club participation. Another very rewarding aspect of the year was to support the Hansa National Para Sailing Championships that were held at Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club. Sailability SoPYC loaned a number Hansa 303 dinghies to interstate para sailors who without the support wouldn’t have had the joy and excitement of competing in what is beco Key to our achievements throughout the season are our community of volunteers. Between 30 and 40 volunteers supported each sailing day, contributing well in excess of 3,500 hours across the season. While we welcomed a few new volunteers during the year and remain grateful for the energy, skills and generosity they bring, there always remains room for more. As the only limitation to providing more sailing experiences for our participants is the availability of volunteers to make it happen. In a message at the close of the season, Commodore Brian Cross captured the significance of the achievement when he praised the team for delivering 1,000 onwater experiences and for the freedom, dignity, joy and sense of possibility that Sailability creates for participants, carers and families. That impact remains the true measure of our success. As we turn our attention towards Season 2026–27, we do so with confidence, gratitude and enthusiasm for what lies ahead and the impact we make each, and every, session.

nother season with all the important boxes ticked and the fleet settles down to something less hectic over winter. The usual competitive racing program, some travel to different venues, hosting visitors from far flung regions of the globe ( just one of the benefits of an international class) and a comprehensive social program all contributing to a slight increase in the average weekly fleet size. Overall, the feeling is that the back of the fleet is getting closer to the front of the fleet. It takes a while to figure out what makes these boats tick. Some would say you never figure it out, which is probably true, but there are a couple of key factors that put you in the hunt. Added to that is

the adjustment in sailing style for a very close fleet of one design boats. Assistance in this process comes from lots of directions but mainly from those who tend to sail in the front of the fleet. Tips on boat set up, sail trim, race management and rules flow around the boat park and the whole fleet lifts as a result. As to the season’s results, the coveted Club Consistency was won by Carl and Kristine Pettersson (Faffin) by only 2½ points from John Hassen and Kevin Griffiths (Final Fifteen). The Club Championship was won by Greg Tonnison and Scott Fallows (The Answer) from Brad Sheridan and Martin Ashby (Bluebottle). Travel for this year took 5 crews to South Australia for the Nationals for a, generally, heavy air regatta that produced the same result as last year. Nick Jerwood and, daughter, Enfys finished first with Mike and Paul Dunbar in second. Following on from the Nationals, we had boats representing South of Perth at Geographe Bay Race Week and the Port Bouvard Regatta and then it was time to be ready for the State Championships over the Easter weekend. Much has already been said about the States regatta but accumulating 41 boats in the one place for 3 solid days of racing and socialising is not

to be sneezed at and a triumph for the South of Perth organising committee. Thank you again to all involved. Team Dunbar (Mike and Paul) won the close fought Championship with a win in the last race with South of Perth boats filling 7 of the top 10 places. Looking towards next season, there is no small amount of discussion about courses, several boats are undergoing facelifts to varying degrees and sailors are making their way back from their winter getaway or regattas in exotic locations.

CRUISING BUTTERFLIES REPORT | David Staniforth-Smith

ruising Butterflies is an annual family fun day supporting families raising children living with disability, developmental delay, autism, genetic, rare, undiagnosed and/or chronic conditions. The event is a South of Perth Yacht Club volunteer-led initiative, delivered in partnership with local Rotary Clubs and KIIND– an agency of Perth Children’s Hospital that supports families facing significant health challenges. The 2026 event, held on Sunday 19 April, saw 258 family members enjoy a 90-minute boat trip aboard SoPYC members’ vessels. Every child, including siblings, received a Cruising Butterflies hat and t-shirt, along with a family portrait. The morning concluded with a sausage sizzle and a range of fun activities including face painting, bubble play and games. The Committee extends its sincere thanks to SoPYC members for supporting community events like this, and in particular to the 122 skippers and crew, along with the many members and their families who volunteered their time on the day. Significant effort goes

into planning the event, and we acknowledge the dedication of our Committee - especially our newer members who would not have realised the work involved – as well as past Chairman Ralph Newton and his wife Lynne for handing over the event in such strong shape, and providing regular encouragement, advice and support. We are also grateful to the Rotary Clubs of Applecross and Melville for their assistance with organisation, registration, catering and parking. Our thanks go to KIIND staff Kerryn Harper, Helen Nys and their team for the many hours spent coordinating participating families. Fishability generously provided their fishing barge, enabling wheelchair access, and we thank Scout leader Nigel and his team for supplying over 100 lifejackets, ensuring the event could be conducted safely. We also acknowledge the valuable support of Club staff, including General Manager John Pedretti, along with Sunnie, Megan, Damo and their teams. Cruising Butterflies is largely made possible through donated goods and services, with the Committee

working hard to keep the event as self-funded as possible. We are especially grateful for the generous $5,000 contribution from the State Government, facilitated by Kim Giddens, a longstanding supporter of the Club. he Cruising Section has always been about getting out on the water, enjoying everything the Swan River has to offer, and sneaking away for adventures to Rottnest, Mandurah and beyond. Thankfully, this year the weather gods smiled upon us and all of our offshore events went ahead without anyone needing to reach for the bilge pump! As highlight to kick off the year, Marcel organised the annual Rottnest Hotel Lunch on Sunday 25th October. Then on the in 14th November was the Rockingham Beach Races and Cruise to our host The Cruising Yacht Club in Mangles Bay. 13 vessels and crews travelled to Rockingham for annual Beach Races. Members gathered for fabulous long table dinner at our host club TCYC as our boats were anchored and moored safely in the quiet waters of Mangles bay over the weekend. The highlight

is watching the horses thunder down the sand towards our viewing points near the jetty. The event is booked again for 2026. September 14th, a group of intrepid boaties met for the Upriver Cruise at The Point in East Perth. The weather was wild so only one boat braved the conditions and made the trip by water. Others met for a shared a leisurely Sunday lunch and a fun raffle draw quiz. We kicked off 2026 with our Mandurah March Long Weekend, themed A Bucking Good Weekend. Saturday saw members embark on a spirited tender pub crawl featuring five pubs in five hours, proving once again that cruising is not just about boats. Sunday brought a competitive RHIB treasure hunt, before the weekend wrapped up with a classic hoedown complete with a BBQ feast, great company and the ever-popular bucking bull, which provided plenty of

entertainment and a few bruised egos. Unfortunately, our friends from Mandurah Offshore Fishing and Sailing Club weren’t quite as lucky when they planned to visit us in May. Their trip coincided with one of Perth’s biggest storms in over a decade, proving that even the best cruising plans can sometimes be at the mercy of Mother Nature.
