It’s especially meaningful to me that my longtime friend, director Peter Rothstein, and his brilliant team have joined us to create our production. I’ve long admired Peter. You’re in for a treat. Simultaneously, on our Julianne Argyros Stage, we are honored to be joined by Mehr Theatre Group, writer/director Amir Reza Koohestani and his team for their bold, imaginative production of Blind Runner. This gripping, internationally acclaimed work offers a starkly different, yet equally urgent look at human connection and endurance. As a man trains a blind woman for a high-stakes race at the request of his wife, a political prisoner, a breathless, visceral metaphor for resistance, trust and survival emerges. This drama represents SCR’s ongoing commitment to bringing powerful, global perspectives and cutting-edge contemporary theatre to Orange County. Leaning in to Purpose
WELCOME! It’s such a joy to have you in our
theatre this fall as we kick off our 2026-27 season, whether you are here for the first time, or you are a subscriber returning to your familiar seats. Doesn’t it feel good? Savor that feeling you get when you put away your phone (and turn off your ringer!) to lean into the ancient human form of storytelling through live theatre. This season we’ve expanded our offerings to include twelve different productions, including seven in our subscription series, the most since the COVID pandemic. We’re offering MORE. More comedies, more breakout hits, more classics on our Segerstrom Stage; more adventurous programming and world premieres on our Julianne Argyros Stage; more time up close with artists in our most intimate theatre, the Nicholas Studio; and more programming for the whole family*. This past year South Coast Repertory defined
a new purpose for our non-profit organization, “to inspire and deepen human connections—one extraordinary performance at a time.” That’s what we hope is at the heart of those good feelings: new and deeper connections to those around you and to our shared humanity. I’m sure you’ll find those in our offerings this fall and all season long. Our fairy tale heroes of Into the Woods begin the story each on their own quest for their own happiness. But as our incredible director Peter Rothstein pointed out at first rehearsal, the great Steven Sondheim once said, “A folktale without a moral is merely a whimsy.” Among those morals is “the notion of community responsibility.” As you hum Sondheim’s earworms to yourself on your way home from the theatre, remember that you have the opportunity to choose the community to which you will be responsible. I hope you set an intention to include South Coast Repertory in your community all year long. My only significant “hobby,” if you could call it that, is running. I’ve run four half marathons and have found in other runners a kind of tribe that transcends cultures and creates community. Running, for me, is an act of resilience; it is never easy. But I never thought of running as an act of resistance, as it becomes in Amir Reza Koohestani’s Blind Runner. Some of you know my husband Ali is from Iran, and his parents, whom I love very much, live in Tehran. In Blind Runner I am reminded of how deeply grateful I am for the freedom we have as Americans. As the Husband says, “[life,] it’s made to be lived, which they have taken from us.” Let us live our lives fully! Sincerely,

Enjoying what you’re seeing? How about building theatre into your schedule by becoming an SCR Subscriber or Flex holder? Take an Acting or Playwriting Class
Do you love performing? Have you always wanted to write a play? Put yourself centerstage and give those characters life by taking an acting or playwriting class from SCR’s award-winning Theatre Conservatory. Classes in acting, improv, musical theatre and playwriting are offered for adults, kids and teens and are taught by SCR’s skilled faculty of professional teaching artists. Students regularly praise the Conservatory’s role in strengthening communication, creativity, confidence and interpersonal skills that extend beyond the theatre and into their personal and professional lives. Those exceptional teaching artists provide an environment that is welcoming for all ages and experience levels. At SCR’s Conservatory, students find their own community of theatre creators—and they often have transformational experiences along the way.
Volunteer
Those friendly folks who scan your tickets and show you to your seats are volunteer
ushers—and there are several hundred of them. Becoming an usher is one of several areas where you can get involved, enhance your theatre experience and help others. Along with ushering, SCR has several other volunteer opportunities that provide an excellent way for you to learn more about theatre, network and foster a positive experience for other audience members. Those opportunities include serving on committees such as the Gala, Corporate Gifts and Audience Development. The Gala Committee helps plan SCR’s annual fundraising event, PEEK!. The Corporate Gifts Committee lends their expertise to help the theatre make connections and build support in the business sector. The Audience Development Committee helps introduce SCR to the community, by identifying potential new audience members, hosting them at their first theatre visit and encouraging ongoing participation. “We’re looking for people who are good connectors and who can bring in people interested in a relationship with SCR,” said Fanny Abib-Rozenberg, SCR’s Major Gifts Officer. SCR Director of Development Clare Kiklowicz said, “Along with that, when you volunteer, you’ll also develop relationships with those who are in leadership roles within the theatre. You’ll be able to build your personal network as well.”

As a nonprofit organization, SCR relies on the support of community members like you. Donating to SCR comes with a number of valuable benefits that give you more access to artists and artisans—along with learning how the art on stage is created. Five Questions with Music Director Wiley DeWeese Director of The Lab@SCR Andy Knight: How would you describe the role of a music director? DeWeese: Fundamentally, a music director oversees the musical aspects of a production, but that can mean different things depending on the needs of the show. As music director for

[SCR’s production of ] Million Dollar Quartet last season, my job was to lead music rehearsals, keep the actor-musicians on the same page and to collaborate with the sound designer to ensure it rocked appropriately. For Into the Woods, my job is more involved. During the rehearsal process, I taught the score to the actors, and in collaboration with the company and our director, Peter Rothstein, shaped the musical elements in the show. When we added in our orchestra, I rehearsed with the musicians, then with the actors and the musicians together throughout tech. Now that we’re in performances, it’s my job to play keyboard, conduct and maintain the musical quality of the show. It’s a lot of hats, but the variety of responsibilities from show to show is what keeps it interesting!
Knight: Can you talk about the music director’s role balancing the technical integrity of the score while also shaping the artistic interpretation of the performances? DeWeese: This is one of the most fascinating parts of the job, especially if you’re working with something as revered as Into the Woods. Sondheim scores don’t leave a lot of latitude for rhythmic/ melodic interpretation. They’re all very specific, and if you try to put your own spin on them with a lot of back-phrasing (singing behind the beat) or melody alterations (riffs, opt-ups), it’s like pulling at a strand of a meticulously constructed sweater. On the other hand, Sondheim provides a huge amount of freedom through the inner complexity of his characters. There’s great breadth in how a lyric can be interpreted, or how a musical phrase can be shaped. And remarkably, I usually find whatever interpretation an actor develops is supported in multiple ways by what’s already on the page. Beyond that, there are always tons of small musical tweaks made to accommodate staging, set considerations and cast size. But if I do my job well, those tweaks marry the intent of the writers with the practicals of our production in a way that feels seamless. Into the Woods • South Coast Repertory • P5

Knight: In your mind, what makes Sondheim’s scores so exceptional? DeWeese: I think the easiest win-
dow into understanding Sondheim’s immense talent is through his influences. In his youth, famed lyricist and librettist Oscar Hammerstein II served as a mentor and a surrogate father. While at university for classical composition, Sondheim studied with Milton Babbitt, a trailblazing composer known for his work in serialism and early electronic music. And throughout his life, he frequently spoke of his reverence for classical composers like Maurice Ravel, Igor Stravinsky and film composers like Bernard Hermann. This is all to say, Sondheim occupied a unique spot at the nexus of golden age songwriting, classical training and a desire to push the boundaries of musical theatre the way Hammerstein had before him. He was a true master of his craft. And through his large music vocabulary and unparalleled lyrical dexterity he wrote scores that were both unmistakably his and yet highly specific to each world he conjured.
Knight: What are the hallmarks of his scores that you see across his writing? DeWeese: From a lyrical per-
spective, there is an unmistakable level of detail and cleverness. He used alliteration liberally, and he loved hiding rhymes within larger rhyme schemes. Look at “The Ladies Who Lunch” from Company: “Here’s to the ladies who lunch/Everybody laugh/Lounging in their caftans and planning a brunch/On their own behalf.” “Laugh” rhymes with “behalf,” but there’s a third rhyme hidden in “caftans.” In Into the Woods, Jack’s mother sings perhaps my favorite lyric when discussing the cow Milky White: “We’ve no time to sit and dither/While her withers wither with her.” That’s quintessential Sondheim. Musically, there are loads of melodic and rhythmic quirks he favored, but broadly I think his biggest hallmark was deliberate use of motifs tied to characters and plot elements. I can’t think of another composer who used them to the same degree, or with
the same level of effectiveness. The five note “bean theme” in Into the Woods is a great example. You’ll hear it invoked as the beans become plot relevant, but he also ties it subtly into accompaniment figures throughout the show. In the song “No One is Alone,” you can also hear it sung inverted with the lyric “people make mistakes.” All his scores have this level of craft, and that is perhaps the greatest hallmark—incredible detail, all in service of plot, drama and character. Knight: What do you think makes Into the Woods one of Sondheim’s most enduring musicals? DeWeese: I think that, in some
ways, it was ahead of the curve, which has helped it age remarkably well. In the years since Into the Woods premiered, there’s been an explosion of classic story/fairytale adaptations that aim to subvert the original—think of the popularity of the Shrek franchise or Wicked. Into the Woods can more than hold its own and does so with equal parts humor and heart. In speaking to the heart part, there’s a Sondheim quote I’ll paraphrase: the first act sees each character pursue their individual wish without regard for the collateral damage. The second act explores the birth of a new collective wish from the community. It’s a beautiful, succinct summary, and speaks to the universality of the story. And I think any show that manages to address such deep themes while also being quite funny is destined to become a classic. Stephen Sondheim (Music & Lyrics) (19302021) wrote the music and lyrics for Saturday Night (1954), A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1962), Anyone Can Whistle (1964), Company (1970), Follies (1971), A Little Night Music (1973), The Frogs (1974), Pacific Overtures (1976), Sweeney Todd (1979), Merrily We Roll Along (1981), Sunday in the Park with George (1984), Into the Woods (1987), Assassins (1991), Passion (1994), Road Show (2008) and HERE WE ARE (2023), as well as the lyrics for West Side Story (1957), Gypsy (1959), Do I Hear a Waltz? (1965) and additional lyrics for Candide (1973). Side by Side by Sondheim (1976), Marry Me a Little (1981), You’re Gonna Love Tomorrow (1983), Putting It Together (1993/99), Moving On (2001), Sondheim on Sondheim (2010) and Old Friends (2023) are anthologies of his work as composer and lyricist. For films, he composed the scores of Stavisky (1974), co-composed the score for Reds (1981), and wrote songs for Dick Tracy (1990). He wrote songs for the television production Evening Primrose (1966), co-authored the film The Last of Sheila (1973) and the play Getting Away with Murder (1996) and provided incidental music for the plays The Girls of Summer (1956), Invitation to a March (1961), Twigs (1971) and The Enclave (1973). He won the Tony Award for Best Score for Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods, and Passion, all of which won the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award, as did Pacific Overtures and Sunday in the Park with George, the latter also receiving the Pulitzer Prize for Drama (1985). Stephen Sondheim was born and raised in New York City. He graduated from Williams College, winning the Hutchinson Prize for Music Composition, after which he studied theory and composition with Milton Babbitt. He served on the Council of the Dramatists Guild, the national association of playwrights, composers and lyricists, and served as its president from 1973 to 1981. In 1983 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters and in 1990 was appointed the first Visiting Professor of Contemporary Theatre at Oxford University. He was awarded the Kennedy Center Honors in 1993, the National Medal of Arts in 1996, the MacDowell Medal in 2013 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in
2015. His collected lyrics with attendant essays have been published in two volumes: Finishing the Hat (2010) and Look, I Made a Hat (2011). In 2010 the Broadway theater formerly known as Henry Miller’s Theatre was renamed in his honor, and in 2019 he became the first living artist to have a theatre named in his honor on Shaftesbury Avenue when the refurbished Queen’s Theatre in London’s West End was renamed the Sondheim Theatre to commemorate his 90th birthday, by Sir Cameron Mackintosh.
James Lapine (Book) is a playwright and director. On Broadway he has worked with Stephen Sondheim on Sunday in the Park with George; Into the Woods; and Passion. He also conceived and directed the musical review Sondheim on Sondheim. With William Finn he created Falsettos recently revived by Lincoln Center Theater; Little Miss Sunshine; Muscle; and directed Finn’s The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Other Broadway credits include his play based on Moss Hart’s memoir Act One (also LCT), Amour, The Diary of Anne Frank, Golden Child and Dirty Blonde. He has written the plays Table Settings, Twelve Dreams, The Moment When, Fran’s Bed and Mrs. Miller Does Her Thing. Lapine has been nominated for eleven Tony Awards, winning on three occasions. He has also been the recipient of the Pulitzer Prize, SDC’s Mr. Abbott Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theater, and inducted into the Theater Hall of Fame. Peter Rothstein (Director) is the Producing Artistic Director of Asolo Repertory Theatre, where he recently directed Fiddler on the Roof, the world premier of Ken Ludwig’s Lady Molly of Scotland Yard, and the U.S. premiere of The Unfriend. Rothstein was the Founding Artistic Director of Theatre Latté Da in Minneapolis, where he staged 92 main-stage productions, including 14 world premieres and 14 area premieres. Other credits include Guthrie Theater, Children’s Theatre Company, 5th Avenue Theatre, Utah Shakespeare Festival, Minnesota Opera, Boston Opera and Chicago Opera Theatre. He is the creator of All Is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914, which premiered in a live broadcast on Minnesota Public Radio and has since been broadcast around the globe. He directed the 2024 production of Joan—both the world premiere at SCR and the 2025 East Coast premiere at Barrington Stage Company—the 2021 Pacific Playwrights Festival reading of Coleman ’72 by Charlie Oh and the 2022 reading of Spenser Davis’ A Million Tiny Pieces. He was last seen onstage at SCR as John in Richard Greenberg’s world premiere of A Shot Rang Out. Ivers created the theatre’s Outside SCR program, which ran for four summers, in partnership with Mission San Juan Capistrano. Suzanne Appel (Managing Director). For more than two decades, Appel has pursued a personal mission to bring people together through transformative experiences led by form-challenging artists. Appel has served as Managing Director and Co-CEO of South Coast Repertory since September 2024 where she works in partnership with Artistic Director David Ivers. Appel is responsible for providing strategic leadership for SCR’s long-term sustainability and growth and guides the execution of SCR’s 2026-30 Strategic Plan. She oversees SCR’s finance, operations, fundraising, marketing, education, production and community relations. Her previous accomplishments as Managing Director of Off-Broadway’s Vineyard Theatre include raising $19 million for a major capital campaign, negotiating a two-production, industry-first producing partnership with Audible, and transferring four Tony-nominated productions to Broadway. Previous roles include Director of External Affairs for Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Managing Director at Cutting Ball Theater in San Francisco and roles with Yale Repertory Theatre, Berkeley Repertory Theatre, Dance Theater Workshop and Wesleyan University. In 2024 she was awarded the Alfred Drake Award from Brooklyn College, an annual honor given to an accomplished theatre professional who has made significant contributions to the American theatre. In 2008, he and David Emmes received the Margo Jones Award for their lifetime commitment to theatre excellence and fostering the art and craft of American playwriting. They also accepted SCR’s 1988 Tony Award for Outstanding Resident Professional Theatre and won the 1995 Theatre LA Ovation Award for Lifetime Achievement. Benson received the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award for Distinguished Achievement in Directing an unparalleled seven times for George Bernard Shaw’s Major Barbara, Misalliance and Heartbreak House; John Millington Synge’s Playboy of the Western World; Arthur Miller’s The Crucible; Sally Nemeth’s Holy Days; and the world premiere of Margaret Edson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Wit, which he also directed at Seattle Repertory Theatre and Houston’s Alley Theatre. He directed the world premieres of Amy Freed’s Safe in Hell, The Beard of Avon and Freedomland; Thomas Babe’s Great Day in the Morning; Keith Reddin’s Rum and Coke and But Not for Me; and Neal Bell’s Cold Sweat; the American premieres of Terry Johnson’s Unsuitable for Adults; and Joe Penhall’s Dumb Show; and the Southland premiere of Top Girls (at SCR and the Westwood Playhouse). Other productions he has directed include Red, New England, Arcadia, The Importance of Being Earnest, Woman in Mind and You Never Can Tell, which he restaged for the Singapore Festival of Arts. He has served as a theatre panelist and onsite evaluator for the National Endowment for the Arts, as well as a panelist for the California Arts Council. After attending Orange Coast College, he received his BA and MA from San Francisco State University and his PhD from USC.
