“The Men’s Week here is my annual birthday present to myself. It sets me straight and reminds me what matters: dropping barriers, taking time and space to listen to my voice, and laughing hard at my water volleyball skills with friends who uplift and celebrate me anyway. It’s quite a rebirth.”

Welcome

Dear friends,

Welcome to Segerstrom Center for the Arts! We are pleased to share a thrilling month of programming with you. We welcome the renowned San Francisco Ballet to the Center with Frankenstein. This gothic masterpiece will leave you with chills! The 2025-26 Broadway season begins with Tony® and Grammy® Award-winning Broadway musical Some Like It Hot and ends the month with the upbeat Moulin Rouge! The Musical.

In Samueli Theater, don’t miss Adam Pascal and Anthony Rapp original cast members of the Tony-winning RENT, who celebrate their friendship as they perform a collection of songs from throughout their celebrated Broadway careers. And for the cool cats out there, Branford Marsalis, a true titan of jazz, returns for two performances.

Our Artistic Partners are also opening new seasons with thrilling concerts. Pacific Symphony presents Shelley Conducts Scheherazade, introducing Alexander Shelley his first concert as Artistic and Music Director Designate for the company.

The Philharmonic Society of Orange County presents Grammy-winning soprano Renée Fleming celebrating the wonder of the natural world while underscoring its fragility in Voice of Nature: The Anthropocene Recital. This program seamlessly blends timeless classical works with modern compositions and draws inspiration from the vivid imagery of nature’s beauty.

Thank you for spending time with us at the Center. Have a splendid and spooky season!

Shucked: A corn-bred American musical

What state is known for its small drinks? Minnesota.

Are you a connoisseur of corniness? Do you love dad jokes? Are puns a part of your daily conversation? Then the Center has a show for you! Shucked is the Broadway hit musical all about corn—the real stuff and the jokes that make you roll your eyes. It’s all good—corny— fun. “With its exuberance, heart and non-stop yucks, Shucked is the surprise delight of the season,” says Variety, while The Wall Street Journal calls “flat out hilarious!”

What is Santa’s favorite state to visit? Ida-Ho Ho Ho.

The folks in Cob County are wondering why their corn crops, which usually grow as high as an elephant’s eye, are suddenly dying. Our heroine Maizy (maize, get it?) is the only townsperson prepared to leave her farmland—

and her fiancé—to solve the problem and sets off to faraway Tampa to see if she can find help. There, an out-of-money swindler realizes she’s as green as an unshucked ear of corn and seizes the opportunity to get his hands on the riches he thinks are buried under the Cob corn rows. It becomes a battle for the heart and soil of a small town and will take real grit(s) to fight. Can they outsmart slick city folk?

How do you throw a party in outer space? You planet.

This show is a case of high fructose corn being good for you. The characters will win you over. Maizy’s fiancé, Beau (beau, get it?) is happy to wait for her and their postponed wedding until she returns. Beau’s brother Peanut will keep him amused with his own mangled jokes. And what if our bad boy city slicker realizes he’s met his match standing above ground in front of him?

Why did the math book look sad? Because it had too many problems!

This might remind some of a 1960s television show Hee-Haw, and that’s because the idea for Shucked started out as a staged version of that country-themed variety show. But it never got off the ground, withering on the stalk in the onslaught of Broadway sophistication. The backers eventually dropped out, leaving the idea open for new producers. This production is helmed by renowned veteran stage director Jack O’Brien, “setting the tone and bringing the infectious spirit of glee, warmth and discovery, just as he did for Hairspray,” says Variety The score is by the Grammy® Award-winning Nashville songwriting team of Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally, who also worked on the original Hee-Haw television program.

What did the corn say when it got a compliment? Aw, shucks!

If the story seems a bit confusing, what with all that corn being tossed around (metaphorically) there is a pair of narrators who appear when needed to offer explanations of everything from corn husbandry to tossing off more corn-related jokes.

I wanted to buy a pair of camouflage pants... but I couldn’t find any.

All-in-all, Shucked is an a-maize-ingly funny show that will have everyone poppin’ with laughter. And what did one ear of corn say to the other? “Don’t you think we’re just too corny?” That’s not possible in this hilarious production.

Catch a rising star

Caity Gyorgy is a busy person. This Canadian jazz phenom is not even 30 years old and she’s already a three-time Juno awardwinning vocalist. She is also an award-winning songwriter, a bandleader, a sought-after clinician and is on the faculty of two Canadian music camps. Just don’t call her the next Diana Krall. She’s already there.

The last name is pronounced “George” and is inherited from her Hungarian great grandparents. Now you know what to say when you attend one of her performances in Samueli Theater next month and rave about her to your friends.

It wasn’t until her late teens that Gyorgy actually discovered jazz. She told jazzwax.com that she had been exploring a record store with her boyfriend when he pulled out Miles Davis’ Birth of the Cool and urged her to buy it. She did and played it on repeat to understand this new music. She also picked up a jazz-vocalists

compilation CD at Starbucks that included Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington, and Sarah Vaughan, which further solidified her new interest in jazz (and she’s still with the boyfriend who has such good taste in music.)

Gyorgy writes her own songs. “They are seriously sophisticated, true jazz songs that have all the hallmarks of becoming standards,” says jazzwax.com. “When you add her confident fluid voice, you realize that Caity’s many musical talents and high taste level are truly remarkable.” She says that she usually quickly writes notes or sings a bit into her iPhone when the inspiration hits her.

For a change, her 2023 album, You’re Alike, You Two, focused on Jerome Kern, a favorite composer of hers and one of the American Songbook’s greatest songwriters. Gyorgy picked her favorites among the 700 songs Kern wrote, which makes sense since she leans toward the American Songbook style for her own compositions. She worked with pianist Mark Limacher. “It’s a real treat to get to focus on one composer,” she told Billboard. “Mark’s so incredibly musical, and he’s a very thoughtful and generous player.” Mark is her pianist on her two subsequent albums: Asking for Trouble and Caity Gyorgy with Strings.

“She continues to cement her status as a singular young voice in jazz today,” says Billboard. “She bowls you over with her sheer love of making music.”

Perhaps Gyorgy will be one of those artists—like Diana Krall—of whom, in 20 years, we’ll be saying, “I remember her first Center engagement.”

Jazz gets a new voice

He may have grown up in Colorado, but jazz-fusion musician Lao Tizer is an L.A. guy now, one of our own, and putting a new sound to the contemporary side of jazz. The Lao Tizer Band will have its Center debut in Samueli Theater for two performances in October.

Growing up, Tizer was heavily influenced by his father’s extensive music collection, which included everything from classical music to Motown and world music—but no jazz. Tizer was 16 before he discovered his calling. He bought two Miles Davis albums and suddenly found what resonated with him. He realized that compared to classical music, “jazz sounds like it breaks all the rules, but I just heard there was a whole other world to explore there,” he says. “My parents always encouraged me to pursue my own creativity and I learned early on how to improvise and be musically adventurous.”

In 1997 he relocated to Los Angeles to pursue his musical calling—he plays the keyboard—the hard way. “Instead of going to music school, I got my butt kicked on the bandstand,” he told the Telluride Jazz Festival newsletter. “There’s no better way to grow than playing with people who are going to push you to grow.”

It must have worked, because at the age of 19 he formed his first jazz band.

“Tizer is one of the new generation of instrumentalists who can’t really be categorized,” says Smooth Views. “He is a powerful player who can shift effortlessly from power chords and funky riffs to lyrical ballads, with improvisational passages that sweep the

listener into luscious soundscapes. It’s a mixture of pop-rock, world beat and contemporary jazz with some jam band sensibility thrown in.”

The band’s music and musicians can change from album to album. Initially the band was strictly instrumental, but in the last few years Tizer has added some cover songs, and then some vocals. “My favorite music has always been well written, well composed, but also with that room to stretch, that’s the improvisation and the jazz of it.”

Whatever the shifts in his musical growth, Tizer loves that he is seeing more young people in his audiences. But he’s not trying to be the coolist guy. “I say forget the boundaries. Just make good music and try to connect with as many listeners as you can.”

A “shining” example of great music

In Greek mythology, Phaeton is the son of the sun god Helio, so it’s not a surprise that the word means “shining.” It’s quite a legend to live up to, and the Phaeton Piano Trio does it con brio.

Members Friedemann Eichhorn, Peter Hörr, and Florian Uhlig are three top German artists of international standing and form one of the most exciting piano trios on the international concert scene. As soloists, the artists are known for their passionate performances and virtuosic technique, successfully performing on the major stages in Europe, overseas, and Asia for more than twenty years. Together, their seamless ensemble work and their combined artistry creates a truly captivating musical experience.

The critics agree.

“Every bow attack, the formation of every tone along with the dialogue-like ensemble between violin and cello, and the pearl-like ease of the piano, contributed to the impression that the trio not only shone as brilliant soloists, but that they joined to present an organic “sound body,” says the Westdeutsche Zeitung.

“…the playing by the Phaeton was everything one could hope for,” says Oberon (NYC).

“Everything melds into a rich blend, which has the emotional pull of Olde World style and grace. We were soon swept into that world by the Phaeton’s inspired—and inspiring—playing.”

Their program for the Center presents a compelling mix of contemporary energy with Fazıl Say’s Space Jump alongside the established masterpieces of Beethoven’s “Archduke” Trio, Op. 97, and SaintSaëns’ Trio No. 2.

Space Jump celebrates the late Felix Baumgarten’s parachute jump from the stratosphere, becoming the first human being to break the speed of sound in freefall. Say depicts each phase of the jump, from

take off to a safe landing on earth. Say’s intense fascination with this event prompted a work containing every emotion he experienced as a spectator.

Beethoven’s Archduke Trio came from the composer’s dedication of the piece to Archduke Rudolph, the younger brother of Emperor Leopold II, a student and patron of Beethoven who appreciated his genius. Beethoven played the piano part in its premiere, the last time he performed in public.

Saint-Saëns’ Trio was given its name, La muse et le poète, by his publisher, which did not make the composer happy. It is a work from his late career, premiering in 1910, and Saint-Saëns described it as a conversation between the cello and the violin.

How did the ensemble take such an unusual name?

“Greek mythology is always interesting,” says violinist Friedemann Eichorn. “It doesn’t have anything to do with fashion but concerns itself with things that last for thousands of years. We think the same of the great compositions in our world of classical music.”

It’s a shining example of the way the Phaeton Trio brings new light to trio compositions old and new.

You are, Janet, you are! The Rocky Horror Picture Show is celebrating its 50th anniversary—we’re going to celebrate on Friday, October 24 on the Julianne and George Argyros Plaza with a free screening and plenty of other fun activities that Dr. Frank-N-Furter and his gang would approve.

Don’t miss the Center’s very own Broadway Divas as they transform into scream queens of Halloween with the return of their highly anticipated Hallo-Queen Spooktacular drag preshow!

Dress up as your favorite character, and be sure to arrive early for the best spots and for your special goodie bag with all the props you need to be an active participant in the show. Only the first 200 guests will receive one, and you don’t want to miss out.

In the meantime, here is some Rocky Horror trivia. Did you know:

• Steve Martin auditioned to play Brad but was passed over for Barry Bostwick.

• Mick Jagger wanted to play Dr. Frank-NFurter in the film version, but the team decided to stay with Tim Curry, who had starred in the original stage production.

• The Rocky Horror Picture Show has many famous fans but perhaps none more impressive than Diana, Princess of Wales, who was thrilled when she met Tim Curry.

• Richard Hartley, who composed the songs alongside Richard O’Brien, told The Guardian that the original stage script only made for a 40-minute long performance. “Time Warp” was initially added to stretch the play out longer, but it would go on to become one of Rocky Horror’s most beloved songs.

• Many movies have “Easter eggs”—little hidden things waiting to be noticed by sharp-eyed fans—but Rocky Horror had actual colored eggs hidden around the set. The crew allegedly staged a literal Easter egg hunt, and some of them proved so well-hidden that they ended up in the movie, including one you can see beneath Frank-NFurter’s throne.

Don’t be like some of the movie’s characters, “Lost in time, and lost in space...” Join your friends on the Julianne and George Argyros Plaza for this special anniversary screening and “Let’s do the Time Warp” again!

Moulin Rouge! The Musical

Pop the champagne, Moulin Rouge! The Musical is the winner of 10 Tony Awards®—including Best Musical!

Enter a world of splendor and romance, of eye-popping excess, of glitz, grandeur, and glory! A world where bohemians and aristocrats rub elbows and revel in electrifying enchantment. Welcome to Moulin Rouge! The Musical! Baz Luhrmann’s revolutionary film comes to life onstage, remixed in a new musical mash-up extravaganza. Directed by Tony® Award winner Alex Timbers, Moulin Rouge! The Musical is a theatrical celebration of Truth, Beauty, Freedom, and—above all—Love. With a book by Tony winner John Logan; music supervision, orchestrations, and arrangements by Tony winner Justin Levine; and choreography by Tony winner Sonya Tayeh, Moulin Rouge! is more than a musical—it is a state of mind.

Summer House at Walnut Village — A Memory Care Neighborhood

Private Accommodations • Resident-focused Relationship-based

At Summer House at Walnut Village, a memory care neighborhood, our highly trained caregivers get to know each person in their care and what they love — encouraging engagement, fostering connection and providing purpose. Comfortable, inviting spaces, life-enriching activities and resident-focused programs support each individual’s wellbeing. All in a warm, intimate setting where residents feel safe and loved. And where families find peace of mind.

Takács Quartet celebrates its golden anniversary

The world-renowned Takács Quartet is celebrating its 50th anniversary season, and it continues to explore and mix its programs with traditional work and new commissions. “The Takacs simply does not do routine,” says The New York Times. It returns to Samueli Theater with works by Haydn, Debussy, and a new commission called NEXUS written for the ensemble by Clarice Assad.

“NEXUS was inspired by watching the Takács String Quartet’s visceral, whole-body approach to musical expression, which was composed to amplify the natural physicality of chamber music performance into choreographed symbolism,” says Assad. The Brazilian-American, a Grammy®–nominated composer, pianist, vocalist, and educator, is acclaimed for her evocative colors, rich textures, and diverse stylistic range.

The piece was commissioned by Elizabeth and Justus Schlichting, an Orange County couple who have been active in supporting new chamber music at the Center.

The lineup of Takács musicians has changed over the decades (only one original

member remains), but it continues to be a leading influence in chamber music. It was the first string quartet to be inducted into the Gramophone Hall of Fame and in 2021 won its fourth Gramophone Classical Music Award for Chamber Music. For a quartet that initially began in Communist Hungary, they have morphed into something very different. From leaving Hungary to settling in Colorado, changing members and expanding their repertoire, the ensemble has retained some of its roots.

“The ensemble is widely recognized for its innovative programming,” says picturethispost.com. “One could apprehend the rapt attention they commanded from their audience in the way many leaned forward in shared communion, as if they were acutely aware that they were receiving a gift of the most intimate nature.”

The members of the Takács Quartet are Christoffersen fellows and artists in residence at the University of Colorado, Boulder. During the summer months the Takács members join the faculty at the Music Academy of the West, running an intensive quartet seminar. The quartet members are also associate artists at London’s Wigmore Hall: They were the first string quartet to be awarded the prestigious Wigmore Hall Medal. This season the ensemble begins a new relationship as visiting artists at the University of Maryland.

“What has always been one of the fascinations of the quartet’s interpretations is how their four musical personalities were always distinct yet combined into such an overwhelming whole,” says the Guardian, while BBC Music magazine concludes, “One thing is certain: You will not hear better string quartet playing anywhere in the world today.” What better reason to see—and hear—them again.

Make a big production this Halloween!

Having a tough time deciding on a costume? Use the Center’s 2025–26 Broadway Series as inspiration!

Recreate the Prohibition Era with a sequined dress and silver shoes. The stockings are rolled over the knee, gowns are slim to the hips and then have plenty of ruffles to shimmy. Hair styled in finger waves

Take inspiration from The Wiz! Borrow your girlfriend’s silver face powder, put on a silver jacket and attach an oil can to your belt –instant Tin Man. Or put on some jeans and shirt and stick some straw in the pockets, pulling it out a bit to be the Scarecrow. If you have a beard, find a curly wig that matches and cut it to look like a lion’s mane. Dorothy? A blue dress and some fabulous shoes. You’ll be easing on down the road as this group of friends.

Men can be the flamboyant star as the Master of Ceremonies in Moulin Rouge. A shiny waistcoat, a fancy red jacket, the top hat and a cane and you’ll be front and center for a celebration of Truth, Beauty, Freedom and—above all—

Pull out your inner agronomist and let Shucked inspire you. Find some dungarees, a flannel shirt, and a trucker’s hat and practice your corny jokes!

The Notebook The Musical is based on the best-selling book and film of a mis-matched couple in love and their story through time. For the beginning of the story, a great vintage store will have plenty of pretty 1950s or 1960s dresses.

Turn Tudor with SIX, the story of the six wives of Henry the Eighth. Check out the shoulder pads, the funky skirts, the bodices… so they might not be completely authentic (Catherine of Aragon is turning in her grave) but it certainly has the scope to

Look on the bright side of life and get garbed as a knight in Monty Python’s Spamalot. Just find a long tunic, turn a serving tray into a shield, and put on a crown to make yourself King Arthur.

You probably already have your school uniform and house scarf. Need we say more?

The Sound of Music is such a classic and full of ideas. The nuns, Maria in her novice apron, the sailor suits of the children …

If you are a guy looking for something easy but dramatic, take inspiration from the Phantom. All you’ll need is a mask, a fedora hat and a flowing black cloak.
