revitalized by Cameron Mackintosh as a new-again production, which stops as part of its North American Tour—presented by Broadway San Diego at the San Diego Civic Theatre, Sept. 2-13. Based on Gaston Leroux’s 1910 book of

the same name, The Phantom is a supernatural romance that takes us back to 1881 at the Paris Opera. There, orphaned chorus girl Christine Daaé becomes the object of obsession for a deformed musical genius, who stalks her while terrorizing the opera company from the rafters. Broadway San Diego stages the dark comedy Oh, Mary!,

Artsy Gems A HAVEN FOR art aficionados and oenophiles, the 18th ART annual La Jolla Art & Wine Festival—which raises funds to support arts, music and science programs at local schools—is a favorite fall event among locals and visitors, drawing 45,000 attendees. Enduring Heroism & Humanity The Moonlight Stages the Broadway-Smash Musical, Come From Away, 25 Years After 9/11

Moonlight Stage Productions presents a very special musical, Come From Away, at its Moonlight Amphitheatre in Vista (aka The Moonlight), Sept. 9-26. The story—on all levels and in endless ways—is nothing short of extraordinary…

ON SEPTEMBER 11, 2001, American airspace closed when stranded passengers (the “come from aways”)—housing, the World Trade Center was struck by airplanes com- feeding and comforting them for five days—until they mandeered by terrorists. Thirty-eight international flights could resume their travels. In 2011, Toronto theater writers Irene Sankoff headed to U.S. cities were diverted to Gander Geno Carr and and David Hein traveled to Gander on the 10th International Airport in Newfoundland, Canada, cast in a past doubling the town’s population overnight. transformed hundreds of hours of raw audio and personal stories into a cohesive script; and a folk-rock, Celtic-infused score—using traditional Newfoundland instruments like the bodhrán, fiddle and ugly stick. A cast of 12 actors would play multiple roles in what became the hit musical Come From Away. Kevin Tuerff, founder and president of the nonprofit Pay it Forward 9/11, Inc., was the real passenger who inspired

the role of “Kevin T.” in Come From Away. He and his partner at the time, Kevin J., were on Air France flight 004, flying from Paris to New York City. Tuerff returned to Gander for the 10th anniversary of 9/11 and was interviewed by Sankoff and Hein. “They interviewed me three times, and I also sent them my personal video, which I used to document some of our 9/11 experience as stranded plane people in Gander,” he says.

Come From Away’s first workshop presentation was in 2013 at Sheridan College in Ontario, Canada. It was followed in 2015 by a record-break-

ing world premiere at the La Jolla Playhouse directed by Christopher Ashley, the company’s artistic director at the time. The San Diego run was a massive critical

success, and it became the highest-grossing show in the history of La Jolla Playhouse. “I’ll never forget being at the La Jolla Playhouse for the premiere of Come From Away,” Tuerff says. “[It] was the first time to see the entire audience leap to their feet in a standing ovation as the musical concludes. In 10 years, every single production has had that same response all across the world.” Come From Away opened on Broadway in 2017; and expanded in 2019 to London’s West End and Melbourne, Australia. It was a smash hit everywhere it played; and received seven Tony Award nominations in 2017, with Ashley winning for “Best Direction of a Musical.” In 2019, the London production won four Olivier Awards, including “Best New Musical.” The show has played in more than 100 cities worldwide across

In a full-circle moment, the show also established a recurring, top-class production performing in Gander—the very town where the story takes place. Now, 25 years after 9/11, Come From Away is coming back to San Diego County, as part of Moonlight Stage Productions’ 2026 summer season at its open-air Vista amphitheater. It is directed by Geno Carr. The San Diego-based actor, singer, director and educator originated the role of “Oz & Others” in Come From Away in the world-premiere run. Carr went on to perform the role more than 1,200 times, in his Broadway

debut, in Toronto, in Washington, D.C., and on the national tour. He is stepping into the director’s role for the first time. “I have originated roles in several plays and musicals over the years, but this was certainly a special one,” Carr says. “Being the first actor to play the role comes with some mixed emotions. There is freedom and joy in creating a character for the first time, but also a bit of fear wondering if you’re heading down the right path. Luckily, the artistic team for Come From Away was extremely nurturing and provided a safe space to explore. “This show is so important to me,” Carr continues. “I learned so much from working on Come From Away that I continue to use today both as an actor and a director. /CONTINUED ON PAGE 28

FROM BARRY San Diego’s stature as an incubator for new works of musical theatre is unparalleled nationwide. The Globe has now sent an extraordinary 27 shows to Broadway. Our excellent producing operation is a key reason: our five shops and their crackerjack crews are best-in-class (scenery, costumes, props, lights, and sound), our producing and production management teams are at the top of the field, and our artistic infrastructure is robust and incisive. The Globe has the institutional muscle to do this work at the highest level. But what distinguishes the Globe as particularly fertile ground for the development of new musicals is our audience. In my 14 years here, I’ve met thousands of Globe theatregoers, and I’m always blown away by their enthusiasm for brand-new musicals, and their discernment about what makes them work. Globe theatregoers come here to discover, to find delight and surprise. That appetite for excitement is what draws artists here to create. They know that in our seats are people predisposed to appreciate their work. Added to our professional expertise, that affection is what makes our stages safe and nurturing spaces for adventurous art. Begin Again is certain to reward our audience of seekers. Based on one of the gems of recent independent film, the musical tells a simple story of people who are looking to start anew, who are hungry for a second chance. Gretta and Dan, the unlikely pair who are the protagonists of the story, have known disappointment. But they have never lost faith. The deity in which they believe is music. If new beginnings are the show’s theme, then music is its soul. Gretta is an artist blessed with unique talent but lacking the self-confidence to express it. Dan’s belief in her is the catalyst to her self-discovery, just as her incandescent gift kindles a new light in him. They are true believers in music’s capacity to change lives, and witnessing their beautiful story, we come to share their belief. A musical about music needs a great score, and Begin Again has one. Our past several seasons have seen a series of experiments in bringing authentic pop and rock music to our stage. We’ve tried to create a sound in our theatre that matches the one we hear all day long in our AirPods. Begin Again manages the feat with stunning success. Pat Monahan and his collaborators in the band Train are celebrated makers

of popular music that has an uncanny ability to sweep us up in its brightness and buoyancy. They’ve distilled the essence of their work into the songs in this show. Indeed, it was when I heard the score for the first time that I knew this show simply had to be here. The sound of Begin Again is something that Globe audiences haven’t yet heard: real, genuine pop music in service of a moving, delightful, and meaningful human story. I’m pleased to welcome the Globe’s good friend Lorin Latarro back to Balboa Park to helm this work. A longtime Broadway dancer turned choreographer and now director, Lorin is a major artist whose vision of musical theatre storytelling is unique and potent. I am very proud to offer her our platform, from which I know she will go on to reshape this art form. She’s gathered amazing collaborators around her, including the brilliant music supervisor, orchestrator, and arranger Brian Usifer, also returning to San Diego; the choreographer David Neumann; and a team of designers including Globe regulars Linda Cho, Derek McLane, and Amanda Zieve—towering figures of the Broadway stage. I’m thrilled to have them, and an exceptional cast of performers, with us. Most of those 27 shows we launched toward Broadway were created in partnership with producers in the commercial theatre world who regard an outof-town tryout at the Globe as a necessary and invaluable step in their project’s development. In my tenure here I’ve presided over many of these collaborations with commercial partners; Begin Again is my twentieth such production. Few have been as enjoyable as this one, thanks to the excellence, thoughtfulness, and warmth of our partners. I want to thank Stephanie Kramer, Nicole Kramer, and Tamar Climan for working so closely and creatively with us to help Begin Again delight our audiences as a first step toward delighting Times Square and, we hope, beyond. Queens

Queens is considered the most diverse borough in NYC with many neighborhoods having distinct cultural roots and populations. Astoria is known for its rich Greek heritage, Flushing has one of the most robust Chinatowns outside of Asia, Jackson Heights has a blend of Mexican and South Asian populations (among others)! While some parts of Queens are a quick subway ride into Midtown, most of Queens can require a long trip to get to and from Manhattan.

Stevie’s apartment in Queens is that one friend’s place that is far away and rundown except for one special feature that makes it the deal of a lifetime. A gorgeous rooftop at golden hour for when our protagonist finally lets go of what’s been holding her back. –Lorin Latarro

The West 4th Street Basketball Courts

These iconic basketball courts are in the heart of Lower Manhattan just steps from the famous Washington Square Park. They first opened in 1935 and over the 20th century became a proving ground for New Yorkers playing pickup basketball. They are also referred to as The Cage, due to the high chainlink fence that surrounds the courts and their smaller than regulation size court, leading to a cramped, closed-in feeling.

I walk by the basketball courts daily to get to my subway stop. They are teeming with life. Basketball players, young kids, music, and always a group of New Yorkers voyeuristically watching it all. A great place for discovery. –Lorin Latarro

Times Square

Times Square is the most visited part of New York City with an average of 250,000 pedestrians walking through it every single day. Though it’s a mecca for NYC tourists, it’s also a transit hub for New Yorkers riding the subway with 10 distinct subway lines passing through and service from all five boroughs. Times Square is also in the heart of the theatre district which is home to almost all of the 41 Broadway houses in New York. DAN GOLD

Times Square felt like the perfect setting for Gretta to be faced with a devastating new reality; a place so big and bright that you can’t help but feel small. We needed our main character to feel insignificant in this moment, so we used large-scale projection (by David Bengali) and lighting (by Amanda Zieve) to simulate the chaos of Times Square and create the illusion of size.

Jane’s Carousel

Jane’s Carousel is located in the DUMBO neighborhood in Brooklyn at the edge of the East River, nestled underneath the Brooklyn Bridge with sweeping views of Manhattan’s East Side. The carousel was originally built in Ohio in 1922. It was purchased at auction in 1984, then restored over many, many years. It finally opened in New York in 2011. The carousel in DUMBO is beautiful and it has actually been put back together piece by piece very lovingly in real life. Look it up; it’s a great story! –Lorin Latarro

THE WORK OF JOHN CARNEY FROM SCREEN TO STAGE

By Katie Rodriguez Film may be the medium of choice for Irish screenwriter, director, and former rock bassist John Carney, but music is undoubtedly the soul of his work. Since his early-aughts breakout on the independent circuit, Carney has carved out a cinematic niche painting stripped-down, strikingly human portraits of everyday life through song. Troubadours, songwriters, punk bands, and pop stars share their joys and their strife across genres ranging from acoustic twee to ‘80s New Wave in his major feature films, of which three have now made the jump from the silver screen to the stage.

An adaptation of Carney’s indie sensation Once (2006), which follows an Irish busker and a Czech immigrant as the pair spend a week in Dublin writing music and falling in love, premiered at New York Theatre Workshop (NYTW) in November 2011. Though rooted in the charming quaintness of Carney’s original film, Irish playwright Enda Walsh adapted and expanded the story for the stage. Set to the backdrop of a fully functional Dublin pub, a boisterous ensemble was introduced to flesh out the world around the central duo, each actor also serving as a member of the onstage band. The original music by Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová—the film’s onscreen lovers—comprised much of the musical’s score, including their Academy Award-winning ballad, “Falling Slowly.” The NYTW production made a near-immediate transfer to Broadway that spring, opening March 2012 at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre. The adaptation proved to be a runaway hit, winning eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and earning accolades from audiences new to the film and hardcore fans alike. Major productions cropped up in the wake of its Broadway success. Returning to the film’s Irish roots, a Dublin production was mounted in 2013 that subsequently transferred to the West End, running through 2015. Closer to home, San Diego theatre fans may remember the much-lauded local production at Lamb’s Players Theatre just last year! Carney’s ‘80s-infused coming-of-age Sing Street (2016), which follows a Dublin teen who starts a band to win the affection of a local model, was next to be adapted for the stage. Again under the guidance of the team at New York Theatre Workshop, the piece debuted in fall 2019. The Off-Broadway production was helmed by Tony Award-winning director Rebecca Taichman and choreographer Sonya Tayeh, and featured the entire catalogue of original New Wave, synthpop music from the film. Sing Street was set for a direct Broadway transfer to the Lyceum Theatre, with performances scheduled to begin on March 26, 2020. The company recorded singles of film-favorites “Up,” “Drive It Like You Stole It,” and “Riddle of the Model” that were dropped digitally in the weeks leading up to the scheduled opening night. The full Original Broadway Cast Recording was released for streaming on April 21, 2020, quickly garnering an avid online following and solidifying the legacy of the highly anticipated Broadway production. The original creative team regrouped in 2022 to stage a new version of the show at The Huntington Theatre in Boston and again in 2025 for a UK production at the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre. The latest of Carney’s works to receive the stage musical treatment is his 2013 love-letter to the city of New York, Begin Again. Led by Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo, the film chronicles the unexpected connection that develops between Gretta and Dan—an up-and-coming singer/songwriter and a seasoned producer on the brink of complete burnout—after a chance encounter at an open mic night. The duo set out to record an album together, the buzzing NYC streets themselves serving as their impromptu sound studio. The stage is where Gretta and Dan’s stories first entwine, in a dimly lit bar with nothing but a guitar and a song that needs to be sung. What element from Begin Again the movie do you think the stage version most successfully maintains?

How do you feel that the moments of magic you’ve crafted strengthen the heart of this story?

Jenna Clark Embrey (JCE) and Molly Beach Murphy (MBM): What John Carney has always so successfully captured in his work is the possibility that music—and musical talent—can be found all around us. These aren’t worlds in which the gift of songwriting or creation is confined to people that are held on a pedestal, but rather, the source of inspiration comes from music-makers we could see or encounter every day as we walk down the street. There is an accessibility and a vulnerability to that approach, to that kind of life as a musician, that we want to uplift in our version of Begin Again.

Skylar Fox (SF): Begin Again is a story that’s meant to capture that feeling you have when you’re walking down the street with your earbuds in, and the song feels like it’s the perfect soundtrack to your life in that moment. There’s a serendipity when a piece of art perfectly captures your real life, and the magic we’re doing on stage in Begin Again is meant to be an expression of that serendipity: the way making and experiencing music can connect us to each other beyond the limits of the tangible world.

How is your writing process different when approaching an adaptation versus an original work? JCE and MBM: When working on an adaptation, it is key to hone in on what makes the source material so successful and try to preserve that. Some works are driven by plot, others by character, some by language, and so on. Staying true to that artistic engine is the priority in a stage adaptation. John Carney’s works are really fueled by character and music, and in Begin Again, we want to keep that balance at the forefront of our process.

What do you feel is the biggest difference between accomplishing moments of magic on stage versus in a film? SF: In film, an audience knows that basically anything is possible. You can understand that something is magical in film, without believing in the magic itself, because film is a visual medium. In theatre, we share the same time, space, and air as the audience, so when something breaks the rules of time and space, we feel it differently. Theatre is an imaginative medium. We create a space where imagination can allow us to see the world not as it truly is, but how we privately feel it to be. PERFORMANCES MAGAZINE P9

He also directed All’s Well That Ends Well as the inaugural production of the Globe for All community tour, and he oversees the Globe’s Classical Directing Fellowship program. In addition to his recent Globe credits, he directed The Tempest with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at Walt Disney Concert Hall in 2018 and The Wanderers Off Broadway with Roundabout Theatre Company in 2023. As Director of the Shakespeare Initiative at The Public Theater (2008–2012), Edelstein oversaw all of the company’s Shakespearean productions as well as its educational, community outreach, and artist-training programs. At The Public, he staged the world premiere of The Twenty-Seventh Man, Julius Caesar, The Merchant of Venice, Timon of Athens, and Steve Martin’s WASP and Other Plays. He was also Associate Producer of The Public’s Broadway production of The Merchant of Venice starring Al Pacino. From 1998 to 2003 he was Artistic Director of Classic Stage Company. His book Thinking Shakespeare is the standard text on American Shakespearean acting. He is also the author of Bardisms: Shakespeare for All Occasions. His podcast “Where There’s a Will: Finding Shakespeare” was produced by the Globe and Pushkin Industries. He is a graduate of Tufts University and the University of Oxford, where he studied as a Rhodes Scholar. TRISH SANTINI (Audrey S. Geisel Managing Director) joined The Old Globe as the Managing Director in July 2026. Prior to relocating to San Diego from New York, she was a Co-Founder of the not-for-profit organization, Empire Training Center for the Arts, a vocational workforce development initiative created to train a new generation of technical and administrative performing arts professionals for jobs that do not require a college degree. From 2016 to 2023, Trish served as the inaugural Executive Director of Little Island in NYC, a $250 million public park with three performance spaces. She was a member of the design and construction team guiding decisions relating to operations and she created Little Island’s not-for-profit administrative organization which included developing the park management structure, selecting the inaugural artists-in-residence, and building workforce programs for young adults. in the first two years of welcoming the public, Little Island hosted over 1.8 million visitors and presented more than 400 performances with over 1,500 artists and more than 75,000 event attendees. Prior to Little Island, Trish held several arts executive roles including serving for nine years as the External Relations Director at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, a $125 million three-theater complex, with an education suite, two restaurants, and multiple public spaces. Trish previously served as the Vice President at TMG-The Marketing Group, a Broadway marketing and press firm, as the Marketing Director at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles, and with Dodger Theatricals. Trish recently served on boards in New York and Minneapolis including as the Board of Directors Vice President for the City of Poughkeepsie’s downtown Business Improvement District and the Advisory Board for the Sands College of Performing Arts at Pace. She has also represented her organizations at numerous industry conferences as a panelist and keynote speaker, and she served as a National Endowment for the Arts grants panelist.

shining a light on the arts engagement team introducing Eric Hagen and rio villa ezell This summer Arts Engagement had the privilege of inviting local artists to perform on our plaza for Begin Again: San Diego Sessions, a free concert that celebrated the spirit of the musical. We put out a call for local musicians, singer/songwriters, and vocalists to submit auditions and from there, 20 were selected for the final performance. How do we make meaningful community engagement opportunities like these happen? Meet Eric Hagen and Rio Villa Ezell, part of the Arts Engagement producing team that helped make the event such a success.

arts engagement producer Years at The Old Globe: 5 How were the artists selected? We essentially held a virtual open call for local singers and songwriters. Artists submitted a short application along with a video performance, and a panel of producers and staff from The Old Globe reviewed every submission. What was the greatest challenge you encountered in the selection process? The hardest part was narrowing the field. There was an incredible range of talent, and we found ourselves wishing we could invite everyone. After many conversations and repeat viewings, we selected a group of artists whose voices, styles, and stories reflect the richness and diversity of our region. What was the most interesting aspect of working with so many local singer/songwriters? Discovering just how much incredible musical talent exists in our own backyard. We received more than 180 submissions from artists across the region, and the quality was extraordinary. From deeply personal original songs to beautiful interpretations of beloved music, every submission was a reminder that creativity is thriving in San Diego. It was inspiring to witness so many of our neighbors sharing their artistry, and a privilege to help create a platform for it.

It’s such a fun roller-coaster ride with laughter and tears and a great message about the power of kindness.” Carr is also the first original cast member to direct a production anywhere. “There’s something wonderful about being an actor and only worrying about what you have to do,” he says. “As a director, there’s a lot of responsibility to guide the cast, crew and production team to present a unified vision for the story. It’s definitely a fun challenge to bring together my experience with the show; while also being able to look at it with fresh eyes for this new production.” Tuerff says it’s surreal to have had more than 100 different actors play

Carr and Tuerff have met many times throughout the show’s journey. “That was one of the wonderful elements of bringing this show to the stage: getting to meet the reallife people our characters were based on,” Carr says. “[Tuerff] has been a huge supporter of the show, and the charitable work he does has become even farther-reaching, thanks to the popularity of the show worldwide.” “My life was changed on 9/11 because I experienced the opposite of the horrors taking place in New York, Washington and Shanksville,” says Tuerff. “When I returned to my hometown of Austin [Texas], I told everyone I could about the

On the first anniversary of 9/11, I closed the doors of my company and handed out $100 bills to my 40 staff, asking them to use it for performing random acts of kindness for strangers. This was how we could slowly flip the way to remember the 2,977 lives lost from not only victims of terrorism, but also in a positive light. Today, Pay it Forward 9/11 is a global kindness charity where we encourage everyone to join #11DaysofKindness during September. We invite everyone to perform three good deeds for strangers, honoring an individual whose life was taken that day. “In the year after 9/11, in a time before hashtags, the words ‘United We Stand’ were pervasive across the world. Today, we are so far away from that,” says Tuerff. “Sadly, our government lead-

This musical resonates all over the world, even in countries not impacted by 9/11.” “The great thing about Come From Away is that it’s a story of coming together; people taking care of others,” says Carr. “It’s never a bad time for a story about kindness.
