On view through Jan. 10, 2027, MOPA@SDMA (Museum of Photographic Arts at The San Diego Museum of Art) presents a new exhibition dedicated to legendary British fashion and portrait photographer, costume designer, fashion illustrator, social caricaturist and writer: Cecil Beaton (1904-1980). Cecil Beaton’s Fashionable World showcases more than 100 works encapsulating Beaton’s career—from 1920s London; to his World War II documentary work; to his Academy Award-winning designs for My Fair Lady; to fashion photography for Vogue and other revered magazines. New Village Arts Turns

From Chicken Coop to Carlsbad Village: A Quarter-Century of Innovation & Inclusion by STEPHANIE SAAD

NEW VILLAGE ARTS (NVA) has launched its landmark 25th anniversary season in Carlsbad, under the enduring leadership of Founder and Executive Artistic Director Kristianne Kurner.

The company’s upcoming 2026-27 lineup highlights a quartercentury of creative expansion, deep regional roots, committed inclusivity and collaborative storytelling.

The company’s milestone Silver Anniversary Season centers on the themes of human connection, chosen families and community resilience. This extensive retrospective examines the history, growth and societal impact of Carlsbad’s premier

professional theater enterprise—from its initial grassroots inception up to the present day.

New Village Arts was founded by Kurner in 2001, with a budget of just $2,500. A graduate of the inaugural master’s class from the prestigious Actors Studio Drama School in New York City, Kurner relocated to Southern California— where she had family, and sought out a neighborhood capable of sustaining a dedicated professional theater company. New Village Arts mounted its very first production inside

a tiny, converted chicken coop in Carlsbad Village known as The Granary in Magee Park. The space accommodated only 25 audience members per night, and theatergoers shared blankets during chilly evening shows.

For the next five years, NVA transformed the nearby corporate headquarters of Jazzercise into a fully functional pop-up theatrical venue several times each year. This unique corporate-creative partnership stabilized the young nonprofit until a permanent civic home could be secured. In 2006,

after several requests, the City of Carlsbad formally designated the historical Bauer Lumber Building on State Street as the permanent home for New Village Arts. This municipal partnership established a longterm footprint in the heart

of downtown Carlsbad Village, positioning the theater to act as a vital economic and cultural catalyst for the surrounding district. Kurner continued to grow the company to a robust $1.6 million budget, and renovated

and expanded what is now known as The Dea Hurston New Village Arts Center—named in honor of Dea Hurston: a prominent San Diego arts patron, playwright and diversity advocate.

“One of the biggest evolutions over the past 25 years is that we were very actively aware about

what stories we were choosing to tell, and how we could ensure our patrons are having experiences from a diversity of backgrounds,” Kurner says. “Our core belief is diversity makes us stronger. As an arts organization, it’s important to ensure there are lots of different voices creating experiences for our community. When we first began—you’re doing a lot of white male playwrights, lots of Sam Shepard, you know. So the question became, ‘Why are we only telling stories from one perspective?’ NVA

has become one of the leaders in San Diego for ensuring our patrons are getting a wider range of artistic experiences.”

Under Kurner’s guidance, the facility evolved into a multidisciplinary arts center. Key organizational milestones and expansions include The Foundry Artist Studios, a collaborative on-site workspace built to house 16 local visual artists, integrating the fine arts directly into the theater space; the Mainstage Players, an innovative educational program providing professional

performance opportunities for neurodiverse young adults; dedicated creative programs serving regional adults living with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia; and The Dea Hurston Fellowship, a formalized career program specifically designed to support, mentor, and hire theater artists of color across Southern California.

To celebrate the grand reopening of the modernized complex in early 2023, Kurner secured a major artistic coup: NVA mounted the exclusive / CONTINUED ON PAGE 28

The Rady Shell’s success has always been rooted in collaboration—with the exceptional musicians of our very own San Diego Symphony, with charismatic guest artists, and with you—audiences who bring your energy, enthusiasm, and spirit to every performance. This fifth anniversary summer continues that tradition with a remarkable range of programming that invites everyone to experience the magic of live music in this one-of-a-kind setting.

This August, we are thrilled to welcome artists such as the visionary St. Vincent and the incomparable Jeff Goldblum, alongside a very special collaboration with the San Diego Symphony celebrating the music of Hollywood. The Gershwins in Hollywood brings together the artistry of Michael Feinstein and Rob Fisher for a specially curated program celebrating the timeless, unmistakably American brilliance of George and Ira Gershwin.

We are also delighted to welcome families to our evenings featuring movies in concert, with the magic of Harry Potter and the swashbuckling adventure of Pirates of the Caribbean. And we look forward to bringing this summer to a spectacular close with the San Diego Symphony’s annual Tchaikovsky Spectacular—a program that features piano soloist Joyce Yang and the towering grandeur and intimate beauty of the composer’s First Piano Concerto.

MUSIC & ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

With his charismatic energy, innate musicianship, and technical brilliance on the podium, Rafael Payare is always “electrifying in front of an orchestra” (Los Angeles Times) Since September 2019, he has been Music and Artistic Director of California’s San Diego Symphony Orchestra, where he is widely credited with inspiring “the San Diego Symphony’s splendid new sound” (Wall Street Journal)

Payare has helped usher in a bright new era for the San Diego Symphony. He and the orchestra drew international notice with the openings of The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park, their bayside open-air venue, and Jacobs Music Center, their newly renovated indoor home, where the Symphony “finally has a San Diego venue that permits it to sound like the world-class orchestra they’ve been since Payare took over” (San Diego Union-Tribune). In recent seasons, the Orchestra has presented festival programming including two weeks dedicated to Brahms, “Upright and Grand: A Tribute to the Piano,” and “It’s About Time,” a focus on percussion that included performances on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border. Works by Brahms, Mahler, Bruckner, and Shostakovich are featured every season with Payare. The Orchestra regularly programs new music by composers including Matthias Pintscher and Gabriela Ortiz, and recently commissioned Symphony No. 6: Monarch by San Diego Symphony composer-in-residence Jimmy López. In 2023, Payare joined Gustavo Dudamel and Esa-Pekka Salonen to launch the first California Festival, a statewide celebration of contemporary music featuring the Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, and San Diego Symphony. On a 2026 Delos release, Payare conducts the San Diego Symphony Orchestra in Shostakovich’s epic seventh symphony, “Leningrad,” following the success of their digital recording of the same composer’s Symphony No. 11. He also leads the Orchestra on its first European tour in 2027, with performances in

Barcelona, Dublin, Hamburg, Paris, and Toulouse. Another of his key initiatives includes the San Diego Symphony Conducting Fellowship Program, conceived to cultivate the next generation of orchestral leaders.

Beyond San Diego, Payare is Music and Artistic Director of Canada’s Orchestre symphonique de Montréal—with which he has made four Pentatone recordings and numerous appearances on Medici.tv—and Conductor Laureate of Northern Ireland’s Ulster Orchestra, where he previously served as Principal Conductor and Music Director, making multiple appearances at London’s BBC Proms. Since winning first prize at Denmark’s 2012 Malko Competition for Young Conductors, he has forged relationships with many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the Boston, Chicago, and Pittsburgh Symphonies; the Cleveland and Philadelphia Orchestras; and the Los Angeles and New York Philharmonics; the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Staatskapelle Berlin, Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich, and Vienna Philharmonic. He has also led productions at London’s Royal Opera House, the Glyndebourne Festival, Stockholm’s Royal Swedish Opera, and the Royal Danish Opera.

An alumnus of Venezuela’s El Sistema program, Payare founded Montreal’s El Sistema OSM. He has led youth projects with the Chicago Civic Orchestra, Orchestra of the Americas, Filarmónica Joven de Colombia, and London’s Royal College of Music, and has conducted the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland on tour and lead NYO2 at Carnegie Hall and the Edinburgh Festival.

Payare lives in San Diego and Montreal with his wife, cellist Alisa Weilerstein, and their two children. n

St. Vincent has been regarded as one of the most innovative and fascinating presences in modern music for nearly 20 years, constantly reinventing her audio and visual personae over the course of a kaleidoscopic catalog and winning six Grammy Awards along the way. This summer, St. Vincent is venturing once more into unexplored territory with a first ever limited run of orchestral performances. These special shows will see a selection of favorites and deep cuts spanning the St. Vincent discography brought to life in spellbinding new dimensions with the aid of Grammy-winning artist and renowned orchestrator, arranger, and conductor Jules Buckley. Together, St. Vincent and Buckley will enlist the San Diego Symphony Orchestra, along with other established orchestras across the nation, to forge new sonic worlds from her acclaimed albums, including Marry Me, Actor, Strange Mercy, St. Vincent, MASSEDUCTION, Daddy’s Home, and All Born Screaming—in what promises to be a series of unforgettable evenings of unique symphonic reinterpretations of songs from one of modern music’s most eclectic and acclaimed bodies of work.

JULES BUCKLEY, CONDUCTOR

Jules Buckley is a Grammy-winning artist and renowned orchestrator, arranger, and conductor. As the middleman between orchestra and artist, he has created bespoke projects with artists including Quincy Jones, Harry Styles, Jacob Collier, Father John Misty, Jon Hopkins, Michael Kiwanuka, Anoushka Shankar, Florence + the Machine, Moses Sumney, Stevie Wonder, and Paul Weller.

He is Chief Conductor of the Metropole Orkest and Creative Artist in Association with the BBC Symphony Orchestra. In 2016, he won a Grammy for Sylva with Snarky Puppy. In 2025, he marked his 25th BBC Prom, collaborating with St. Vincent and The Jules Buckley Orchestra. After working with Harry Styles on the track “Coming Up Roses” from the 2026 album Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally. He will collaborate with Styles again in summer 2026, leading the Jules Buckley Orchestra for Styles’ headline London show as part of Southbank Centre’s Meltdown Festival.

In Buckley’s words: “I hope to keep bringing the music I love to new spaces and to continue to push the stereotypes of what an orchestra can do in the modern day”.

AROOJ AFTAB, PERFORMER

Arooj Aftab is a Grammy Award-winning composer, vocalist, and producer whose work has established her as one of the most distinctive voices in music today.

Her albums Vulture Prince and Night Reign have been widely acclaimed for their emotional depth, originality, and artistic vision.

Arooj has collaborated across genres with artists including Bonobo, Beck, Khruangbin, and Terri Lyne Carrington, and with ensembles including the Metropole Orkest and London Contemporary Orchestra. Her work also spans orchestral composition, film, television, and multidisciplinary performance.

Steven Reineke is one of North America’s leading conductors of popular music and is in his second decade as Music Director of The New York Pops at Carnegie Hall. Additionally, he is the Principal Pops Conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and Principal Pops Conductor of the Houston and Toronto Symphony Orchestras.

Reineke is a frequent guest conductor and can be seen on the podium with the Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, and Detroit Symphony Orchestras.

On stage, Reineke creates and collaborates with a range of leading artists in hip-hop, R&B, Broadway, television, and rock, including Killer Mike, Maxwell, Common, Kendrick Lamar, Nas, Ne-Yo, Barry Manilow, Cynthia Erivo, Ben Rector, Cody Fry, Sutton Foster, Amos Lee, Dispatch, Jason Mraz, and Ben Folds, among others.

As the creator of hundreds of orchestral arrangements, Reineke’s work is performed worldwide and can be heard on numerous Cincinnati Pops Orchestra recordings. His wind ensemble compositions are published by the C.L. Barnhouse Company and are performed by concert bands perennially.

RAJATON, VOCALISTS

The Finnish word Rajaton translates as "boundless" – a word that so accurately describes the way this six-voice a cappella ensemble approaches music.

Regularly performing around a hundred concerts and workshops each year, Rajaton exposes their audiences to the kind of diversity of repertoire, singing style, and stage presentation that has made them a phenomenon on the world stage.

Performing at concert halls, churches, jazz and choral festivals, this distinct group of musicians approaches all styles of music with the same level of commitment and integrity. It is difficult to imagine an audience that they

could not inspire, or a type of music they could not make their own.

In their native Finland, Rajaton is a bona fide pop phenomenon, successfully bridging the gap that often exists between classical and mainstream convention.

Ever seeking new artistic challenges, the group has grown immeasurably through collaborations with other artists, as well as productions with film directors and choreographers. NICOLAS REYES AND GIPSY KINGS

Nicolas Reyes has been the leader and co-founder of the Gipsy Kings for well over 30 years. In the past three decades, they have dominated the World Music charts and sold more than 14 million albums worldwide. Their platinum compilation, The Best of the Gipsy Kings, was charting for over a year upon its release and their ninth studio album, Savor Flamenco, was awarded the Grammy for Best World Music Album in 2013.

This iconic legacy began when Nicolas’ father, Jose Reyes, formed a celebrated flamenco duo with Manitas de Plata (which boasted fans as famed as Miles Davis and Pablo Picasso). When the pair parted ways, the elder Reyes became even more popular upon starting his own band, backed by his son, called Los Reyes. In later years, Nicolas headed out on his own and began playing in the town of Arles in the south of France. He traveled throughout the country, busking on the streets of Saint-Tropez, playing wherever he could. Having adopted the perpetual motion of the gypsy lifestyle, his band eventually translated “Los Reyes” and became the Gipsy Kings.

have played some of the world’s greatest stages, from the Hollywood Bowl to Royal Albert Hall as well as hitting the big screen. Their rendition of “Hotel California” was included in the film The Big Lebowski and the HBO series Entourage. The 2010 fllm Toy Story 3 featured a Gipsy Kings version of the movie’s popular, Randy Newman-penned theme, “You’ve Got a Friend in Me”. The Gipsy Kings recently featured in a Big Lebowski spinoff The Jesus Rolls with Reyes appearing in person with the director and star, John Turturro, for some of the promotion.

As active as this remarkable collective remains, they are also confident in the future of their legacy. “Even though it’s been 30 years, we want to keep on making new music because it’s our life. It’s who we are,” says Nicolas Reyes. “But I think there will be a time when we pass down the Gipsy Kings to our sons.”

Thirty years is an eternity in pop music, but the story of the Gipsy Kings featuring Nicolas Reyes has the depth to endure. A #1 New York Times bestselling author, Feinstein’s career as a top-selling and critically acclaimed recording artist, Broadway performer, and concert artist has earned him five GRAMMY® Award nominations, a special Tony Award for Excellence in Theatre for his Feinstein’s New York venue, two Emmy nominations for his television specials, and acclaim for his awardwinning NPR series. American Songbook Foundation in 2007 to preserve and elevate America’s rich musical legacy through public programming, archival preservation, scholarly research opportunities, and educational initiatives, including the annual high school Songbook Academy®. For more than a decade, he also served as a Founding Member of the Library of Congress National Recording Preservation Board.

Feinstein was named Principal Pops Conductor for the Pasadena Symphony in 2012 and made his conducting debut in 2013. He also serves as Artistic Director of the Center for the Performing Arts, a $170 million, threetheatre venue in Carmel, Indiana, home to diverse live programming and a museum featuring Feinstein’s rare memorabilia and manuscripts. Since 1999, he has served as Artistic Director for Carnegie Hall’s “Standard Time with Michael Feinstein” in conjunction with ASCAP, and in 2010 became Director of the Jazz and Popular Song Series at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York.

A successful entrepreneur and innovator in live entertainment, Feinstein helped redefine the modern cabaret experience by expanding his acclaimed nightclub brand nationwide. Feinstein’s at the Nikko in San Francisco has presented top pop and jazz talent since 2013. His original New York venue, Feinstein’s at the Regency, featured legendary performers including Rosemary Clooney, Barbara Cook, Diahann Carroll, and Alan Cumming from 1999 to 2012. Feinstein later opened Feinstein’s at Vitello’s in Los Angeles in 2019, Feinstein’s at Hotel Carmichael in Carmel, Indiana in 2021, and Feinstein’s

at The Taper in Los Angeles in 2023.

Michael recently signed a multi-year agreement with Magnolia Hill Productions at Warner Bros. Discovery to compose and oversee music for the company’s upcoming projects, including serving as producer and composer for the forthcoming Liza Minnelli dramatization.

Born and raised in Columbus, Ohio, Feinstein began playing piano at age five. At 20, he moved to Los Angeles, where Oscar Levant’s widow introduced him to Ira Gershwin. Feinstein became Gershwin’s assistant, gaining access to numerous unpublished Gershwin songs that he later helped preserve, perform, and record. Gershwin’s mentorship provided the foundation for Feinstein’s evolution into a celebrated performer, composer, arranger, and one of the foremost interpreters of the works of Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Johnny Mercer, Duke Ellington, and Harry Warren.

ROB FISHER, CONDUCTOR

Rob Fisher is an internationally recognized music director, conductor, and pianist, and a leading figure in American music and musical theater. He is a regular collaborator with the San Diego Symphony and has been a guest of virtually every major orchestra in the country as conductor or pianist.

With the New York Philharmonic, he has conducted the acclaimed concert versions of Carousel, My Fair Lady, and Mr. Keillor at 70. At Carnegie Hall with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, he led gala performances of Guys and Dolls, The Sound of Music and Candide. He conducted The New York Pops on many occasions, sharing concerts with the late Skitch Henderson. As pianist, Fisher has been soloist for Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and Concerto in F with orchestras across the country.

He has collaborated in concert with such artists as Renée Fleming, Patti LuPone, Kristin Chenoweth, Kelli O’Hara, Victoria Clark, Idina Menzel, Brian Stokes Mitchell, and David Hyde Pierce. He conducted the San Francisco Symphony in the Emmy-winning concert production of Sweeney Todd starring Patti LuPone and George Hearn. At the Chicago Lyric Opera, he led the record-breaking production of The Sound of Music.

Fisher was founding music director and conductor of the New York City Center Encores! series from its inception in 1994 until 2005. The series earned a 2000 Tony Award, and in 1997 Fisher was given the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Special Achievement. Fisher made numerous recordings for Encores! including the Grammy® Award-winning Chicago cast album. He is supervising music director for Chicago productions worldwide, including the 28 years (and counting) of the Broadway company.

Fisher was music director for the New York Shakespeare Festival’s revival of Hair in Central Park and was music supervisor for its Tony-winning run on Broadway. He served as music supervisor for the Tony-winning Broadway revival of Anything Goes. More recently, he was the score supervisor and arranger for Broadway’s An American in Paris.

As artistic advisor for Carnegie Hall’s Gershwin Centenary Celebration, he served as music director and conductor for

Ira Gershwin at 100, broadcast on PBS Great Performances. He appeared twice on the PBS series In Performance at the White House during the Clinton administration.

Fisher has a long association with Lincoln Center’s American Songbook series as a producer and music director, creating tributes to the Gershwins, Bernstein, Cole Porter, and Kander & Ebb—which was broadcast on Live from Lincoln Center. He has also made many appearances as music director for the Lyrics and Lyricists series at New York’s 92nd Street Y.

Rob Fisher is known to A Prairie Home Companion fans from his four years as Music Director for Garrison Keillor’s broadcasts (1989-93) and as the leader of the Coffee Club Orchestra during that time.

SCARLETT STRALLEN, VOCALIST

Scarlett Strallen, born and raised in London, is best known on Broadway as Mary Poppins—a role she also played in London and Australia—and as Sibella in A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder. Other New York highlights include Gwendolyn in Travesties on Broadway, and Alice in The New Yorkers with Encores! at City Center. Strallen’s West End career highlights include Kathy in Singin’ in the Rain, for which she received an Olivier Award nomination; Cassie in A Chorus Line; Clara in Passion at the Donmar Warehouse; Josephine in HMS Pinafore for which she also received an Olivier Award nomination; and Truly Scrumptious in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Her additional theater credits include the title role in Nell Gwynn at the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre; Mabel in The Pirates of Penzance at Barrington Stage Company; Lady McDuff in Macbeth with Kenneth Branagh at the Armory in New York; Cunegonde in Candide and Amalia in She Loves Me, both at the Menier Chocolate Factory in London; Marion Paroo in The Music Man at Chichester festival theatre; and starring alongside Dame Judi Dench in The Merry Wives of Windsor with the Royal Shakespeare Company. In 2014, Strallen received the WhatsOnStage Award for best actress in a musical for her portrayal of Cassie in A Chorus Line and Cunegonde in Candide in the same season. Original casts include Mamma Mia! and The Witches of Eastwick.

A frequent soloist with orchestras around the world, Strallen’s engagements in the U.S. include the Boston Pops, Cleveland Orchestra, Seattle Symphony, Grant Park Music Festival, Utah Symphony, Philly Pops, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, Florida Orchestra, and St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, among many others. She made her German debut at the Berliner Philharmonie with the John Wilson Orchestra in A Celebration of the MGM Film Musicals and performed with the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra with Keith Lockhart. For the BBC Proms at Royal Albert Hall she has performed Cole Porter in Hollywood and Bernstein Stage and Screen with the John Wilson Orchestra along with playing Laurie in Oklahoma. ABOUT THE ARTIST

JUSTIN FREER, CONDUCTOR American composer/conductor

JUSTIN FREER was born and raised in Huntington Beach, CA. He has established himself as one of the West Coast’s most exciting musical voices and is a highly sought-after conductor and producer of film music concerts around the world. Freer began his formal studies on trumpet, but quickly turned to piano and composition, composing his first work at eleven and giving his professional conducting debut at sixteen.

Continually composing for various different mediums, he has written music for world-renowned trumpeters Doc Severinsen and Jens Lindemann and continues to be in demand as a composer and conductor for everything from orchestral literature to chamber music around the world.

He has served as composer for several independent films and has written motion picture advertising music for some of 20th Century Fox Studios’ biggest campaigns including Avatar, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Aliens in the Attic. As a conductor Freer has appeared with some of the most well known orchestras in the world including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, London Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic and the Philadelphia Orchestra. He is also one of the only conductors to have ever conducted in both

the ancient Colosseum and Circus Maximus in Rome.

Renowned wind conductor and Oxford Round Table Scholar Dr. Rikard Hansen has noted that, “In totality, Freer’s exploration in musical sound evoke moments of highly charged drama, alarming strife and serene reflection.”

Freer has been recognized with numerous grants and awards from organizations including ASCAP, BMI, the Society of Composers and Lyricists and the Henry Mancini Estate. He is the Founder and President of CineConcerts, a company dedicated to the preservation and concert presentation of film, curating and conducting hundreds of full length music score performances live with film for such wide ranging titles as Rudy, Gladiator, The Godfather, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, It’s A Wonderful Life, and the entire Harry Potter Film Franchise.

Mr. Freer earned both his B.A. and M.A. degrees in Music Composition from UCLA, where his principal composition teachers included Paul Chihara and Ian Krouse. In addition, he was mentored by legendary composer/conductor Jerry Goldsmith.

JOHN WILLIAMS, COMPOSER

In a career spanning more than six decades, John Williams has become one of America’s most accomplished and successful composers for film and for the concert stage, and he remains one of our nation’s most distinguished and contributive musical voices. He has composed the music and served as music director for more than one hundred films, including all nine Star Wars films, the first three Harry Potter films, Superman, JFK, Born on the Fourth of July, Memoirs of a Geisha, Far and Away, The Accidental Tourist, Home Alone and The Book Thief. His 50-year artistic partnership with director Steven Spielberg has resulted in many of Hollywood’s most acclaimed and successful films, including Schindler’s List, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, Jaws, Jurassic Park, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the Indiana Jones films, Munich, Saving Private Ryan, The Adventures of Tintin, War Horse, Lincoln, The BFG, The Post and The Fabelmans. His contributions to television music include scores for more than 200 television films for the groundbreaking, early anthology series Alcoa Theatre, Kraft Television Theatre, Chrysler Theatrve and Playhouse 90, as well as themes for NBC Nightly News (“The Mission”), NBC’s Meet the Press, and the PBS arts showcase Great Performances. He also composed themes for the 1984, 1988, and 1996 Summer Olympic Games, the 2002 Winter Olympic Games. He has received five Academy Awards and fifty-three Oscar nominations, making him the Academy’s most-nominated living person and the second-most nominated person in the history of the Oscars. He has received seven British Academy Awards (BAFTA), twenty-five Grammys, four Golden Globes, five Emmys, and numerous gold and platinum records. In 2003, he received the Olympic Order (the IOC’s highest honor) for his contributions to the Olympic movement. He received the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors in December of 2004. In 2009, Mr. Williams was inducted into the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, and he received the National Medal of Arts, the highest award given to artists by the U.S. Government. In 2016, he received the 44th Life Achievement Award from the American Film Institute –

the first time in their history that this honor was bestowed upon a composer. In 2020, he received Spain’s Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts as well as the Gold Medal from the prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society in the UK, and in 2022 he was awarded an honorary knighthood of the British Empire as one of the final awards approved by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

In January 1980, Mr. Williams was named nineteenth music director of the Boston Pops Orchestra, succeeding the legendary Arthur Fiedler. He currently holds the title of Boston Pops Laureate Conductor which he assumed following his retirement in December 1993 after fourteen highly successful seasons. He also holds the title of Artistin-Residence at Tanglewood. Mr. Williams has composed numerous works for the concert stage, among them two symphonies, and concertos commissioned by several of the world’s leading orchestras, including a cello concerto for the Boston Symphony Orchestra, a bassoon concerto for the New York Philharmonic, a trumpet concerto for The Cleveland Orchestra, and a horn concerto for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. In 2009, the Boston Symphony premiered his concerto for harp and orchestra entitled “On Willows and Birches”, and in the same year, Mr. Williams composed and arranged “Air and Simple Gifts” especially for the first inaugural ceremony of President Barack Obama.

In 2021, Williams premiered his second violin concerto with the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood along with soloist Anne-Sophie Mutter, for whom he composed the work n

regional premiere of Jez Butterworth’s Tony Award-winning masterpiece, The Ferryman. NVA made global theater history as the first company anywhere in the world permitted to produce the massive, complex show outside of its original Broadway and London West End engagements. National validation continued to mount in 2024 when The Ray Charles Foundation awarded a major grant to NVA. Attracted by the theater’s profound commitments to diversity and neurodiverse casting, the foundation officially named the main auditorium The Ray Charles Stage in his honor.

Kurner herself has been a part of every single NVA production in its history, whether as an actor, director or producer. Today, the theater generates an estimated annual economic impact of over $1.2 million for the City of Carlsbad, employing a staff of more

than 50 professionals.

“We’re also doing a lot more musicals now than when we launched,” Kurner says. “It took us 10 years to produce our first musical, because we were so actor-focused in the beginning—putting on intense and exciting plays. But musicals tend to be much more popular, especially in San Diego. This season, four out of our five productions will be musicals. But doing big shows in a small theater like ours gives you a whole different understanding of the impact of a musical. The experience becomes less about the spectacle of the musical and more about the story and the characters.”

The Silver Anniversary Season, August 2026 through July 2027, blends adventurous storytelling and high-energy musicality that defines Kurner’s decades of theatrical curation.

Aug. 7-Sept. 20, 2026, a high-octane rock musical by Ben Elton driven by more than 20 classic hits from Queen. Then, Oct. 16-Nov. 29 brings Kurner’s personal staging of As You Like It, a folkpop musical adaptation of Shakespeare’s comedy by Shaina Taub. The show was featured during NVA’s first season in the chicken coop; and its return marks the third time Kurner has directed the classic piece across the company’s 25-year lifespan.

In the new year, NVA presents Cabaret, Kander and Ebb’s masterpiece exploring community bonds in uncertain times, Jan. 29-March 14, 2027. Performing April 9-May 9, 2027 is Furlough’s Paradise, a poetic play by a.k. payne under the company’s new donor-backed “Audacious Initiative.” It’s a production program established to permanently finance and spotlight adventurous, locally produced new works on the Carlsbad stage. Finally, the anniversary season comes to a close June 4-July 18, 2027, with Lin-Manuel Miranda’s energetic, community-focused musical portrait, In the Heights Kurner says it’s important for her to ensure access to NVA shows for as wide an audience as possible. “Tickets are expensive, like every-

thing else these days,” she says. “But we do offer pre view performances—the first five shows—that are all Pay-What-You-Can; and also Rush tickets one hour before each show for $30. We want to make sure everybody has the opportunity to connect to the arts; while recognizing theater is really expensive to produce now.”

Although Kurner drops a bombshell during this interview—this season at NVA will be her last, as she is stepping down and moving to New York City—one thing that will not change is the commitment of the company she has built to diversity and representation in the San Diego theater ecosystem. “We serve a really important function, in that we are dedicated to honoring the names on our building—Dea Hurston and Ray Charles. We are going to continue to tell stories from as many different perspectives as we can. You’ll see the same actors you’re going to see on the biggest stages around town, but in an intimate environment. And we have many women, queer folk, and femmes who are leading the way, producing an incredibly high-quality art from a variety of perspectives. That is really important for us.”
