BOHEMIAN BLOCKBUSTER
LOVE AND HEARTBREAK with bohemian flair—that’s the gist of Giacomo Puccini’s La Bohème, one of the world’s most performed operas. L.A. Opera presents an original production of the muchloved work at six performances, Nov. 22 to Dec. 14, at Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. Janai Brugger stars as sweet but suffering Mimi and Oreste Cosimo as the lovestruck struggling poet Rodolfo. Gihoon Kim and Erica Petrocelli play the on-again, off-again lovers. Resident conductor Lina González-Granados leads Puccini’s transcendent score. Director Brenna Corner helms a production that the L.A. Times calls a “warm, nostalgic evocation of Paris in Puccini’s time.” 135 N. Grand Ave., downtown, 213.972.8001, laopera.org

Community
and Connection
When patrons become members of performing arts companies and venues, deeper relationships are just one of the benefits. by
ONE SUNDAY AFTERNOON this past September, about 50 people gathered at the home of violinist Maia Jasper White, co-founder and co-artistic director with violinist Kevin Kumar of the chamber music ensemble Salastina.
Some were resident artists of the group; most were patrons in Salastina’s membership program, accompanied by their guests.
During the four-hour event—which included three
LIBBY SLATE
cakes that White had baked and a wine-cheese-fruit-andcrackers spread—10 of those members, one at a time, joined the Salastina musicians to perform a chamber work of the member’s choosing.
The high-spirited day of camaraderie and connection, known as the Chamber Music Reading Party, was an exclusive benefit of being a Salastina member. It afforded amateur musicians the chance to play such pieces as a Mendelssohn piano trio and the Schubert cello quintet alongside professionals.

“It’s a very casual, fun, sweet event,” White says. “In a way, it’s a very pure execution of our mission— to invite the audience into our artistic space and recreate the chamber music salon of yore for our time. They get so much out of it—and it helps us, too, when we look out into the audience [at concerts] and we see these people.
“It’s like, ‘Hey, there’s Randy. He played the Brahms Hungarian Dance, and now he’s watching us play.’ There’s something really reciprocal about it.”
As a familiar credit-card ad slogan says, membership has its privileges.
companies and venues are using membership models to attract patrons, enhance their experiences
That sentiment extends to the performing arts, where an increasing number of musical and theater and support various company programs.
In general, there are two membership formats.
BANC WITH STRENGTH
Julia Masli in ha ha ha ha ha ha ha at Pasadena Playhouse; the theater offers three membership packages.
One provides tickets as part of a monthly or annual membership fee as well as perks; the other offers benefits including discounts on tickets purchased separately.
Salastina was founded in 2010 and launched its membership program eight years later. The program started out including tickets but later switched to the discount option.
“We found that our members didn’t actually care that much about the tickets,” White says. “They just wanted to make a donation and feel like we valued that.” And, she adds, the discount method is easier for ticket management.
Other membership benefits, depending on the financial level, include priority seating at concerts, guest passes, attendance at dress rehearsals, and free access to livestreamed concerts and archived programs.
Membership fees cover the cost of tuition for Salastina’s young composers program and support virtual musical bedside visits to patients at a Pasadena hospital.
Another musical ensemble, Muse/Ique, has used various versions of the membership model since its 2011 inception to support its community outreach partnerships and events; the group moved to nearly 100 percent membership for its tickets several years ago.
“It’s a wonderful experience that’s at the core of everything we do,” notes Muse/Ique president and CEO Brian Colburn. “It’s not just an audience strategy. It really is center to the values of the company.”
Muse/Ique’s concerts are primarily themed to empowerment and social justice; they include well-researched commentary by artistic and music director Rachael Worby about how the programmed music has changed history and changed lives.

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S NOTES
FLYING HIGH WITH OUR VERY OWN “PETER PAN”
La Mirada Theatre has a special history with PETER PAN. A wildly popular production that began on this very stage in 1997 and made its way to Broadway, where it was nominated for the coveted 1998 Tony Award for Best Revival. Its much-praised star was also Tony-nominated for her performance in the title role: Cathy Rigby. For the past 31 years, Cathy and her husband, Tom McCoy, have been the Executive Producers of our Broadway Series. Therefore, it’s almost impossible to think that we’d present PETER PAN GOES WRONG without her — albeit in a different role. We were honored to catch up with Cathy to hear her long history with the world of PETER PAN and what it means to her today.
BT McNICHOLL,
La Mirada Theatre
Director: What was your first encounter with PETER PAN — for example, did you see a production of it before you played the title role? And if you did, did anything go wrong that you recall?
CATHY RIGBY: I was first introduced to PETER PAN when I was asked to play the part of “Peter” in 1974. It was a sort of Disneyland parade-style show with everything pre-recorded. The production was huge, with sets and cast that could fill the arenas. Captain Hook’s ship was about 60+ feet long and traveled on a track around the arena. We also flew on an overhead track that covered that same area.
You’ve played the title role over 3,000 times. Surely, you must have some great stories! What were some of the more memorable mishaps that you survived?
There are soooo many fun little stories! Paul Rubin has been my trusted” flyer” (the crew member in charge of hoisting me into the air) since 1997 and I’ve been in good hands ever since. Before him, though, it wasn’t always smooth sailing. One evening during the final scene in Act 2, Peter once again flies into the nursery window to take Wendy back to Neverland. Because it is now many years later, Wendy has grown up, so her daughter Jane is lying in bed asleep. My “flyer” (the crew member in charge of hoisting me into the air) is behind the set, and when given the OK, he jumps off a 10-foot ladder holding a rope that connects to a wire attached to my harness. When he does this, I (as “Peter”) am catapulted about 20 feet into the air and land on the stage.
This one evening that didn’t happen. I had to crawl through the window and begin to scene. I didn’t realize till the part where I say to Jane, “Just think lovely thoughts and you’ll fly,” and she said…
Cathy Rigby’s first PETER PAN: a 1974 arena production.
“Peter, it isn’t working.” It was clear at that point that our wires were crossed and, as my “flyer” jumped off the ladder, she was violently wrenched out of bed… hit the side wall and had to crawl back into her bed. I think she actually cursed. When we were both getting hooked up, my wire got crossed with hers!
At another performance, a very, very tall man sat in the center of the first row… as I came out to do my curtain call and fly out over the audience, I noticed that he was giving us a standing ovation, which was lovely, but I had to scream for him to sit down or I would take his head off as I flew over directly over him!
You went to the opening of PETER PAN GOES WRONG on Broadway as a special guest. What was your reaction to the show, given you know how it’s supposed to go?
I loved the production — I laughed till my stomach hurt. It not only captured the terror and thrill of having to improvise when something goes wrong, but it also captured the teamwork and mischief that happens when doing this particular show.
In 2013, you took your last flight as PETER PAN in a “farewell” production, once again here at La Mirada. Have you missed the story, and what’s it like coming back to it a dozen years later in this backstage comedy version?
I wish I could still play “Peter,” but at this point in my life, I could only do it with a walker! I’m grateful for the opportunity to help spread the joy and laughter of Peter Pan and Neverland at the La Mirada Theatre.
Whether it’s been done as a play, a Disney animated movie, a TV musical special, a Broadway musical, or a silly send-up, PETER PAN seems to be a constant in our lives, over a century later. Why do you think that is?
I have watched and listened to children and adults when they hear and see PETER PAN. For the children, it’s the adventures and the flying. For the adults, it’s watching their children or grandchildren experience the wonder of Neverland in all their unbridled joy and innocence. One of my favorite lines in the story is Mrs. Darling saying to her young daughter, “If only you could remain like this forever.” I think about this sentiment when I’m with my young Grandchildren. Alas, “All children grow up... except one.”
Any final thoughts you’d like to share before you take flight, as it were?
With all the chaos happening around the world, I hope escaping to Neverland for a few hours will bring a little laughter and joy to all.
Thank you, Cathy, for all the magic you’ve given us at La Mirada Theatre over the years – and that you continue to bring us onstage each night with this marvelous cast in PETER PAN GOES WRONG!

WHO’S WHO
CATHY RIGBY (Narrator and Cecco) is a twotime Olympic gymnast and the first American woman to win a medal at the World Gymnastics Championships. Following her athletic career, she starred in 3,000 performances of Peter Pan on Broadway, in national tours, earning a Tony Award nomination. Her stage credits also include Annie Get Your Gun, Seussical, The Wizard of Oz, and numerous other productions. Now joyfully on “the other side of Neverland,” she treasures sharing the stage with all the actors, musicians, crew and audiences for Peter Pan Goes Wrong – especially with her grandchildren Hailey, Jude, Wyatt, Delilah, and Harvey (if he’ll sit for that long) in the audience, even if it’s not quite the same Peter Pan they’ve always known. And special thanks to my grandson, Dane, apprentice “Map Designer.”

Healthy Spaces
Interior designer Christine Vroom advances the trend of incorporating health and wellness in living spaces inside and out. by ROGER GRODY
THE PORTFOLIO OF interior designer Christine Vroom reflects considerable versatility; whether the underlying architecture is classically inspired or minimalist modern, she brings freshness and energy to living spaces throughout Greater Los Angeles. Vroom is also a leading proponent of introducing design elements that enhance health and wellness.
“I work with modern, Georgian revival and Spanish architecture,” she says. “Though I don’t have a specific signature style, all my projects have a thread of ‘the unexpected’ woven throughout them. I like to push clients outside their comfort zones, beyond what they envisioned the project to be like.” She enjoys adding distinctive details and historic accents.
Rooms in 1920s Craftsman bungalow in Venice, now flooded with light and energy
The designer, who founded Redondo Beach-based Christine Vroom Interiors in 2008, is an enthusiastic traveler who is inspired by diverse places and cultures.
She has admired iconic designer Kelly Wearstler’s unapologetically theatrical approach since she was a teenager, and also appreciates the work of designer/entrepreneur Christiane Lemieux: “I love the mood she brings to a project.”
Though Vroom favors traditional layouts with more defined spaces, she is adept at introducing contemporary accents to traditional settings and enhancing modern environments with centuries-old accents.
“Furnishing a historic Parisian
hotel with bold, contemporary furniture creates a sense of luxury, without trying so hard to play into the existing architecture,” she explains.
Conversely, she submits that if only sleek avant-garde furniture is selected for a modern minimalist home, it can lack depth.
Vroom is passionate about lighting. “Lighting is like jewelry,” she suggests. “It’s very personal and difficult to select for a client but it adds personality.” She currently admires the lighting designs of Australia-based Articolo Studios for contemporary concepts and United Kingdom-based Vaughan for more traditional designs.

“There’s a deeper conversation happening around mental clarity, emotional comfort and sensory experience—overall wellness,” Vroom observes. Spaces for cold plunges, saunas and massages, previously reserved for the very affluent, are becoming standard requests among Southern California clients.
Says Vroom, “The health-andwellness trend translates to intuitive layouts, strategic use of natural light, and materials that invite touch and exude calm. It’s not wellness in a spa cliché kind of way. It’s design that actively supports how you move, think and live.”
The designer, originally from Boston, believes that indoor-outdoor spaces are an essential element of the Southern California lifestyle. “It’s part of our everyday living and always part of the design conver-
sation, whether it involves a single balcony or an amazing backyard with an infinity-edge pool.”
Projects by Christine Vroom Interiors that represent the trend of health and wellness include a Manhattan Beach residence a block from the ocean. The 4,500-squarefoot home reflects the community’s modernist tendencies while integrating traditional elements.
The spa-like primary bath, clad in natural materials that Vroom believes enhance wellness, features a statement tub from Signature Hardware that’s illuminated by a fanciful Soho Home chandelier.
In Venice, Vroom transformed a 1920s Craftsman cottage for a client seeking an environment that could at once provide serenity, energize her with abundant light, and retain some of the neighbor-
hood’s funkiness.
In the primary bath, a glass lantern pendant from Hudson Valley Lighting Group hangs above a freestanding Victoria + Albert tub.

Carlsbad
Dining: Young and Beautiful
The burgeoning restaurant scene is reason enough to visit the coastal city in San Diego’s North County. by BENJAMIN EPSTEIN
IT WOULD NOT be a stretch to say that four restaurants of a single restaurant group have elevated Carlsbad—long known as a family destination between Los Angeles and central San Diego—to a foodie destination as well.
Campfire, offering wood-fired fare in a midcentury Quonset hut, and contemporary French bistro Jeune et Jolie—whose name translates to “young and beautiful”— have been huge draws since their 2016 and 2018 openings, respec-
tively. So has all-day cafe, bar and bakery Wildland since its debut late last year.
But Lilo, the newest entry from restaurateur John Resnick and chef Eric Bost, cements the city’s reputation as a can’t-miss culinary hotspot.
Six weeks after its opening last April, Lilo became San Diego’s only new Michelin-starred destination for 2025; in September, The New York Times named it one of America’s 50 best restaurants.
The tasting-menu experience
begins on a very cool garden patio and continues inside at a 22-seat chef’s counter overlooking an intimate open kitchen; as many as 16 small courses might include sweet corn croustade with green blueberries, or A5 Miyazaki Wagyu with grilled unagi.
Soaring stone-and-wood Wildland, also new, could not be more different.
Lines blur between its 8,000-square-foot indoors and streetside patio, and disappear

between its Southern California farm ingredients and Mediterranean inspirations.
Expect bold flavors: wood-fired pizzas, house-made pastas, rotisserie chicken, wood-grilled market fish and seasonal salads. Consider a pizza sandwich—with mortadella, stracciatella and charred egg—for breakfast or lunch!
Or set up camp at Campfire.
Start with oysters warmed over coals with smoked oxtail dashi; continue with yellowfin crudo with coconut, kiwi lemongrass and Thai basil; then koji-aged ribeye with fermented Fresno peppers and chimichurri; finish with Yes, We Have S’mores.
Brilliant cocktails—such as the Kentucky Crest with bourbon, grilled guava, toasted green tea, Campari, pineapple, lime and kinome leaf under “Refreshing”—are reason enough to go.
The nuanced beverage program at Michelin-starred Jeune et Jolie is also an eye-opener. A margarita with a whisper of absinthe? A sake in a 1,000-year-old style with aromas of tropical fruit? We’re there!
The four-course menu is prix fixe, with several choices for each course.
Recent first-course options included a memorable amberjack crudo and an elaborately presented veal tartare. Subsequent courses offered supplemental possibilities, such as
A5 Wagyu ribeye with sweetbreads. The bar offers an a la carte menu. Also putting Carlsbad in the national spotlight: Emily Brubaker, executive chef at the historic Omni La Costa Resort & Spa, has just won the first season of NBC’s Yes, Chef! Martha Stewart and chef/humanitarian José Andrés are the show’s hosts; other celebrated chefs and a Top Chef host served as the guest judges.
Brubaker’s prize money: $250,000.
Raised in Carlsbad, Brubaker oversees eight dining venues at the luxe Spanish Mission-style property and golf course; the resort is marking its 60th anniversary. Highlights at its

Vue dining room include the charred lime and mint aguachile, scallops with ancient-grain risotto, and corn semifreddo dessert with peanut financier and corn-husk caramel.
And the restaurant hits keep coming.
Cbar is a charming new all-day coffee, wine and beer bar with a sweet theme; red wine hot chocolate and Italian nachos are ideas whose time has come! The menu features breakfast bites, seasonal salads and savory small plates.
Little Victory Wine Bar serves natural wines—wines made with biodynamically farmed grapes and minimal intervention in the cellar —and small plates such as cheeses, cured meats and tinned fish plates amid laid-back elegance.
What to do between meals? If
you love the arts and performing arts, plenty.
Just getting to and from the restaurants in Carlsbad Village you’ll likely encounter at least one of nearly 60 street murals. The Carlsbad Art Wall features 37 distinct murals; the Carlsbad Alley Art Wall, 17 murals; and the
Village Faire Shopping Center, five. Perhaps the most iconic is the 18-foot Sleeping Tiger by Michael Summers; it’s outside Witch Creek Winery and Sleeping Tiger Coffee.
The Museum of Making Music celebrates its 25th anniversary this year; and the New Village Arts theater is just behind it at 24.

Many consider New Village Arts, renovated in 2023, to be the cultural hub of North County San Diego.
Its two stages—Next Stage and new Ray Charles Stage, named following a gift from the Ray Charles Foundation— attract more than 30,000 patrons each year for theater, music and art events as well as comedy, improv and spoken word.
On through Dec. 24: the musical Rent
The Museum of Making Music presents fascinating instruments, galleries and exhibits on the first floor of the NAMM building (National Association of Music Merchants), located 10 minutes from Carlsbad Village.
The venue celebrates the accomplishments and impact of those who make, sell and use musical instruments

Among numerous extraordinary instruments, the traditional hammered dulcimer and harp guitar are displayed alongside the electric theremin and the first commercially sold polyphonic synthesizer.
There, we went an entire article without mentioning Legoland, the beach or the springtime Flower Fields. Almost.

field,” Colburn says of the nonprofits. “We want to show them how music can help them imagine something brighter for themselves.”
With members receiving free concert tickets for a year, thus removing the burden of selling tickets to fill seats, programming has become more adventurous, Colburn says.
“Membership creates an environment [at concerts] of people who are really hungry for what we do,” he adds. “It’s kind of a trust relationship that we build over time. We find ourselves going deeper
and deeper with the music and stories as the membership communicates to us that they’re interested in richer topics.”
Financially higher membership levels receive additional benefits such as VIP seating and parking, complimentary hors d’oeuvres and attendance at community

outreach events.
Founded in 1917, the Pasadena Playhouse followed the seasonticket-holder format for a century then switched to the membership model in 2018.
The theater offers three packages: the Classic subscription to all five mainstage productions, with same seat and same day of the week for each; the Dynamic, featuring flexible schedule and seats; and FirstLook, offering previews of four shows.
All packages include discounts for additional tickets and Playhouse classes, and free access to member-exclusive and behind-the-scenes events.
The Classic remains a traditional season subscription but, says Rachyl Spacca, chief marketing and communications officer, “we still call it a membership. That’s really about a mindset shift that we’re encouraging with all of our members.
“We want our patrons to feel part of something greater,” Spacca says, “a community that enjoys something together, versus being a subscriber or season ticket holder, which has more of a connotation of just being a transactional purchase.”
Colburn also speaks of Muse/Ique members having a feeling of belonging, and White of members being part of the Salastina family.

a strong social component to membership. Friendships have formed among members and long-ago lost connections revived. Members attending as groups of friends increase audience energy and enthusiasm.
Pasadena resident Mary Ann Bernath became a Playhouse member with her husband, Michael, following the pandemic; they attend with another couple. This season, the memberfriend group expanded to eight; they meet for dinner before each performance.
“I enjoy being a member, because it’s a commitment, and the last few years, [Pasadena Playhouse] has done a tremendous job with their plays,” she says. “You help support the theater as a member.”
The arts entities have not only increased membership numbers over time, but sustained high renewal rates. The trepidation felt in the months and in some cases years of planning the membership-model switch has long been replaced with the glow of success.
“It was scary,” says Colburn of forsaking the long-ingrained practice of ticket sales. “But the payoff has been so much greater than what I could have projected in my wildest fantasy of how well it would work.”

NO RUSTLING PAGES, no killing trees . . . the digital Performances program platform has proved to be one of the more enduring recent theater innovations.
The touchless platform provides the programs for 20 Southern California performing-arts organizations, from the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Ahmanson Theatre to San Diego Opera, where the app made its debut.
Among a variety of features, it provides cast and player bios, donor and season updates, and numerous
other arts-centric features.
Audiences receive a link and a code word that instantly activate the app; QR codes are posted, too.
Screens go dark when curtains go up and return when house lights come back on.
Updates—such as repertory changes, understudy substitutions and significant new donations —can be made right up to showtime, no inserts necessary.
Other plusses include video and audio streams, translations and expanded biographies.
