A couple years ago, when I first took this job, I was coming off my tenure running East West Players, the nation’s preeminent Asian American theatre company. I came to CTG excited to play on the best theatre stages not just here in Los Angeles, but in the entire country. I also came here with a mission to welcome new community into these spaces and for all Angelenos to see themselves on our stages. This month we have both Filipino and Korean casts on our two biggest venues—telling uniquely Filipino and Korean stories—and I truly could not be prouder.

At the Taper, Here Lies Love tells the story of the Marcos family and their rise to and subsequent fall from power—all set to a disco groove. The show rocketed out of the gate and sold so well that we announced a two-week extension before it even began previews. If you haven’t seen it, I hope you will! And if that’s the show you’re here to see right now, then I invite you to spend some time with this program, which includes historical context, creative notes, and resources to accompany the play and your experience.

Meanwhile, at the Ahmanson, we are thrilled to be presenting Kim’s Convenience. The play, written by and starring Ins Choi, inspired the beloved Netflix series, and is now in the middle of a tour here in the states after it was remounted in Canada last year to much acclaim.

Finally, I wanted to take a moment to plug two other events that are important to our mission here at CTG. First, ¡SÍ SE PUEDE! is a brand-new touring production inspired by the life of trailblazing activist Dolores Huerta. KIM’S CONVENIENCE ’S INS CHOI ON FINDING COMMUNITY THROUGH THEATRE.

Ins Choi introduces himself as an actor, a writer, and a husband and father of two teenagers. “I don’t know, it kind of makes me seem like a more regular person,” he chuckles. It’s a fitting introduction to the playwright of Kim’s Convenience, a play about a family-run convenience store in Toronto that explores themes of family and community.

“It’s a unique show that features five people of color telling this story of this working-class immigrant family, trying to make ends meet, trying to love each other without necessarily the words to express it,” Choi said of the show he created and stars in.

Choi was born in Korea and raised in Toronto, where his father is a pastor at a Korean church. “He’s a funny guy, so comedy came naturally to me through him,” Choi said. His father on stage in front of the congregation felt like his first theatre experience.

배우들이 노동자 계층 이민 가족의 이야기를 펼칩니다. 하루 벌어 하루 살기 바쁘고, 표현에는 인색해도 서로 사랑하려 애쓰는, 그런 가족의

이야기입니다.” 자신이 쓰고, 직접 출연하기도 한

아버지가 워낙 재미있는 분이셔서, 저도

자연스럽게 코미디가 몸에 밴 것 같아요.” 강단에서 회중들을 상대로 설교하시던

부친의 모습. 그것이 사실상 그의 첫번째 연극 경험이었다.

“I think that’s the theatre,” he recalled. “Someone on stage, speaking to an audience and making the audience laugh, think deep thoughts...making the audience feel like we are a part of a community. We are not alone in this world, our struggles are not singular, we share a common humanity with different people who look differently than we do.”

Choi was drawn to the stage in search of that sense of community. Auditioning for a production of Damn Yankees at his new high school felt like a great way to reinvent himself and make friends. And he did—the cast hung out after rehearsals every day. “I think that kind of community-building and friendship won me over to theatre,” he said.

When he graduated college for acting, it was “a rude awakening” to find there weren’t many roles for him as a Korean Canadian actor. But he found community with other Asian theatre graduates in the area. “We gathered and started to read mostly Asian American plays, because there were no Asian Canadian plays back then,” he said.

The reading group evolved into fu-GEN Theatre Company in 2002, Canada’s premier Asian Canadian theatre company. Choi got his start as a playwright through the company. “We were mostly actors who could kind of write, most of us were writing so that we would have something to cast ourselves in,” he said. It was with that playwrighting cohort that Kim’s Convenience came to be. It took Choi around seven years to finish the play, and it was then rejected by many theatre companies in Toronto. So, he staged the play himself at the Toronto Fringe Festival in 2011, playing the role of Jung and directing the production. From there, the show took off—with a professional production at Soulpepper Theatre Company, a Canadian tour and TV show, a U.K. Tour, and now remounted by Soulpepper for a North American Tour. In that time, Choi has gone from playing the youthful Jung to patriarch Appa.

“Even when I wrote the play, I wanted in the future to play Appa one day when I got old. And lo and behold—I got old,” he said. “[Playing Appa] just felt very comfortable, very at home. It just felt right.”

극단들로부터 퇴짜를 맞는다. 그렇게 그는 2011년, ‘토론토 프린지 페스티벌(Toronto Fringe Festival)’ 에 이 작품을 직접 무대에 올렸다. 아들 ‘정’의 역을

맡아 연기하는 동시에 연출도 겸했다. 이후 이 연극은 극단 소울페퍼 (Soulpepper Theatre Company) 에서의 정식 프로덕션을 시작으로, 캐나다 투어와

TV 시리즈 제작, 영국 투어로까지 성공을 이어갔다.

작품은 극단 소울페퍼를 통해 북미 투어 버전으로 다시 연극 무대로 돌아왔다. 그리고 이렇게 시간이 흐르는 동안, 최인섭의 배역은 젊은 아들 정(Jung) 에서, 한 가족의 가장인 아빠(Appa)로 바뀌게 된다. “작품을 처음 쓸 때부터, 언젠가 나이가 들면 ‘아빠 (Appa)’ 역을 한 번 해 보고 싶다는 생각을 했었어요. 말 그대로 이젠 세월이 흘렀죠. 제가 어느새 나이가 들었더라고요. 아빠 역할은 그냥 편했고 잘 맞았어요. 딱 맞는 옷을 입은 것처럼 자연스러웠죠.”

While Kim’s Convenience garnered acclaim for its TV adaptation and Netflix syndication, Choi was excited to return to the stage—and the magic the medium provides.

“I missed...being in a room with a bunch of strangers...all experiencing something together,” he said. “When film was invented, it was like, ‘Oh, it’s the death of theatre.’ And then TV shows came out, ‘Oh, it’s the death of theatre.’ And yet. COVID—‘the death of theatre.’ And yet, theatre continues and has a unique charm most art forms don’t.”

And that sense of Damn Yankees childhood camraderie seems to live on with the current Kim’s Convenience cast—and audiences, too.

“It’s been a real family—we care for each other, we have communal meals and movie nights, and we play a lot of games,” he said. “It’s been [a] really fun and nourishing time.”

The cast also gets to sightsee together in each of the cities they visit—especially through food. Trying contemporary American twists on Korean food or “really expensive hot dogs” at a baseball game were just some highlights. In San Francisco, one audience member owned a cafe and invited the cast to breakfast the next day.

연극은 끝났어’. TV가 처음 나왔을 때 또 그랬죠. ‘이제

연극은 끝났어’. 그리고 코로나 19가 찾아오고 또 같은

말을 합니다. ‘이제 연극은 끝났어’. 하지만 연극은

끝나지 않고 계속되고 있고 다른 예술 매체에서 찾기

힘든 고유한 매력을 계속해서 이어가고 있어요.”

출연진들에게 여전히 이어지고 있다. 그리고 아마도, 관객들에게도 그런 것 같다.

“지금까지 진짜 가족처럼 지내 왔죠. 서로 챙기고, 같이 밥 먹고, 영화도 보고, 게임도 정말 많이 했습니다. 재밌게 지내면서도 서로에게 힘이 되는 시간을 함께 보냈어요.”

출연진들은 방문하는 도시마다 같이 관광을 즐기곤 했다. 현지 음식을 함께 맛보는 재미가 특히 컸는데, 현대 미국식으로 변주한 한국 음식이나 어느 야구 경기장에서 먹었던 ‘엄청 비싼 핫도그’ 등이 하이라이트였다고 한다. 샌프란시스코에서는 카페를 운영하고 있던 한 관객분이 공연 다음날 출연진들을 아침 식사에 초대한 일도 있었다.

“Particularly with theatre that is centered around, created by, and involving many people of color, there’s a unique quality to it,” Choi said. “There’s a deeper, ‘we’re in the trenches together’ feeling...we’ve had such incredible audiences who have shared back with us all their stories and we’ve experienced that together.”

Choi is excited to finally bring Kim’s Convenience down the coast to audiences in Los Angeles, where some of his cousins live. His uncle actually owned a convenience store in South LA in the 90s—and one of his stories made it into the play. “The LA Riots in 1992 were kind of a sore spot in Korean immigrant history...but his story during the LA Riots is a unique story of hope and friendship,” he said. “It’s very special that someone I reference in the play actually lives in LA and K-Town is right around the corner from the Ahmanson and [LA]’s got the most Koreans outside of Korea. It’s a bit of a homecoming, in a sense.”

최인섭 작가는 이번에 자신의 사촌들이 살고 있는 로스앤젤레스 관객들에게 《김씨네 편의점》을 마침내 선보이게 된 데 대해 큰 기대를 전했다. 사실 그의 삼촌은 1990년대

Starting Off Strong

COLLEGE

STUDENTS AND EARLY CAREER PROFESSIONALS LEARN ABOUT THE MANY CAREER PATHWAYS IN THE ARTS AND NOT-FOR-PROFIT SECTORS.

One of Center Theatre Group’s core values is to center lifelong learning, inspiration, and human connection. Getting Started is just one of the events hosted by Center Theatre Group’s Education & Community Partnerships team that helps pave the way for the next generation of theatre professionals.

Getting Started is an empowering day of workshops and conversations with industry professionals, connecting with your peers, and envisioning a fulfilling future in the arts. The free event is in partnership with East Los Angeles College (ELAC) for college students and early career professionals who want to learn more about the different career pathways in the arts and arts administration.

Ninety-four attendees from across Los Angeles visited ELAC at the end of January to attend workshops and panels led by arts and not-for-profit administrators from Center Theatre Group, The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, East West Players, Gloria Molina Grand Park, Latino Theater Company, BroadStage, and Boston Court Pasadena. These panels discussed a variety of career pathways and fields—like operations and facility management, human resources, fundraising, marketing, social media, and communications.

“Getting Started began three years ago to create a lowcommitment space for emerging professionals to learn, explore, and connect with one another,” said Aurora Ilog, CTG’s Creative Workforce Initiatives Director. “Getting Started attendees learn about a side of the industry that supports the operations and sustainability of the arts.”

The event’s origins can be traced back to Ilog’s own career journey. She knew she loved the arts, but didn’t want to be on stage and wanted a more 9-to-5 schedule. Through support from her professors and industry professionals, she was able to determine a career in arts administration was right for her. Getting Started is a way for young professionals to do the same. “Arts Administration can support bringing art to the people, help with cultivating relationships with communities, commissioning artists, and much more,” she said. “Many of the attendees identify as an artist first who may have studied Theatre or Visual Arts in college, who may be wondering now – what job do I apply for? We’re here to encourage them to look at the skills they’re developing in college and start re-framing as to how these skills transfer to the different careers in the arts or even careers outside of the arts.”

Hear what some attendees had to say about the experience.

“HR and Operations and Facilities [Management]...both really stood out to me because I didn’t know anything about them. I went in completely blind and I feel more informed about what they do. There’s a lot of problem solving, a lot of creative teamwork that goes into the job and it’s beautiful how the leaders both express what they’re doing in the job and how everyone comes together.”

“I came into this event specifically wanting to learn more about marketing and communications, since that’s what I’m studying. I think that session was really validating. I do have these skills and this is a field I might want to go down. I feel prepared for...what to expect.”

“I had a really great conversation with Brittany Gash [Director of Marketing & Communications, BroadStage] talking about my want for a career transition [and] trying to find something that more aligns with what I’m trying to do. CREATOR AND MUSICIAN DAVID BYRNE TO CHAT ABOUT THE SHOW’S INCEPTION AND INSPIRATIONS.

This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

SD: Welcome, David. I know you are in the middle of a world tour right now, so thank you for taking the time.

DB: Happy to. Thank you for having me.

SD: I’m thrilled to be directing the LA premiere of this incredibly original musical, and I’d love to spend a little time in conversation with you about it. First, let’s start big and broad. Where did the idea for Here Lies Love originate from?

DB: Two ideas converged. I saw “track acts” in discos, live disco sets with backing tracks where artists would perform karaoke versions of their hits. [I noted] that DJs often spoke about the “arc” of their sets. So I wondered, “What if that ‘arc’ told an actual story? If you got a story while dancing?” Years later, [I] was reading about Imelda Marcos...and noted how she loved going to discos and she often sang during her political campaigns.

CONVERSATION WITH:

DAVID BYRNE

SD: Which, correct me if I’m wrong, you don’t see very often on the campaign trail.

DB: No. Might be a good idea though. [I did] a little digging and I saw a video of her dancing with arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi under a mirror ball in her New York townhouse. I thought, “She lives in that disco fantasy world—could this be the story told in that immersive way?”

SD: What led you to collaborate with another renowned musician, Fatboy Slim, on this project?

DB: Though my own music is often very groove oriented, I felt this project, to sound authentically clubby, needed a real DJ’s help. Norm [Fatboy Slim] used a wide variety of beats (not only house or techno), so I cold-called his management. And he said yes.

SD: The show is a completely sung-through musical with no real moments of dialogue throughout. Why did you decide to go in that direction with the score?

DB: I did a lot of research and noted where the story beats were, then started writing songs. Coming out of this conception, I thought the music should never stop.

SD: So, you don’t like book scenes. Do you find them cringey?

DB: A little bit.

SD: The show is about the People Power Revolution —how did you research the movement and what did you learn through the process?

DB: The People Power Revolution was my stumbling block—how do [you] deal with this historical moment in a way that wasn’t over-the-top or sentimental? I went to the Philippines to meet artists, filmmakers, writers, and to catch the flavor in the plays where Imelda and Ferdinand [Marcos] grew up. The situation was not as black-and-white as it seemed as an outsider. There was a little more nuance. Imelda’s factotum met me and right off the bat said, “Imelda was never poor!” though Imelda herself claimed an experience of poverty when it suited her politically. But poverty in the Philippines is relative—Imelda did have family members and Estrella to help her.

Dealing with the revolution occurred during the workshop process. I realized the killing of Aquino and his funeral set off the beginning of resistance to the dictatorship, so I wrote a song for his mother using her own words from that time. I was given an oral history of the revolution, which had those quotes as well as all the quotes that became the lyrics to “God Draws Straight.” I realized I could portray the revolution through the eyes of ordinary people, the participants whose numbers made it happen in four days. What touched me was how ordinary it was, it

was not just fringe groups—it was everybody. The [Catholic] Church and even the army soldiers defected from Marcos. It was entirely peaceful—which is hugely inspiring and inspirational.

SD: To this day, the Marcos presidency remains highly controversial. How did audiences react to the story of the Marcos family during the Broadway run?

DB: Sometimes you don’t know what a show is about until you put it in front of an audience. I realized that the audience was seduced by the glamour and music in the first two acts...as were the Philippine people...as we all can be. Then the corruption and abuses begin to come to light and the audience feels totally betrayed [to realize] they’ve been tricked and fooled. Eventually there is redemption in the revolution when justice seems to have been achieved.

SD: Do you have a favorite anecdote from any of the previous performances of the show?

DB: During early performances at The Public Theater, with the audiences on the dance floor, they felt like they were really there. Marcos loyalists would point and yell at the actors, “Bullshit!” and some would angrily walk out in the third act. What theatre performance makes an audience feel empowered to do that? I loved it.

SD: This new production comes at a particularly heightened political moment here in the United States. What can our audiences learn from the rise of populism, fascism, and wealth disparity in the Philippines during the Marcos’ regime? Are there any parallels you see today?

DB: Yes, this story is very relevant to today, not only in the U.S., but lots of places around the world where democracy is in danger and the disparity of wealth becomes extreme. The Marcos’ celebrity and power in politics feels very contemporary, from the 60s, 70s, into the 80s, this is the template that has been followed ever since. What the Philippine people did, a peaceful revolution, is a lesson for all of us.

SD: I couldn’t have said it better myself. Thanks again for joining me today. All the best for the rest of your tour.

It’s a true joy to be back directing at the Taper after last season’s Green Day’s American Idiot, created in collaboration with our friends at Deaf West Theatre. Thank you all for the extraordinary support you gave that production—support that helped it become the highest-grossing musical in the Taper’s history.

When I was thinking of how we might follow it up, I kept thinking about the show you are about to experience today. Like American Idiot, Here Lies Love is a groundbreaking, genre-defying musical inspired by a concept album. In this instance, the show was dreamed up by the ingenious, virtuosic mind of David Byrne, who invited Fatboy Slim to join him in a one-of-a-kind musical collaboration. The result is a pulsing, immersive, politically charged, fever dream of a musical that has stayed with me since I first saw it in 2013— and knew I wanted to bring to LA someday. And, well, it only took a decade and some change, but that day is finally here!

This marks the first production of Here Lies Love since its Broadway run in 2023, as well as its very first time being staged here in Los Angeles. That feels especially meaningful in a city that is home to the largest Filipino population outside of the Philippines itself. A big thank you to the maestro himself, David Byrne, and this knockout group of artists who helped bring this show to life. This musical doesn’t just arrive in LA—it lands here with purpose.

I encourage you to spend time with this program. It’s a companion piece to the show in many ways. INS CHOI (Playwright, Appa, he/him) was born in Korea but grew up and currently lives in Toronto, Canada with his wife and two children. His debut play, Kim’s Convenience, won the Best New Play Award and the Patron’s Pick at the 2011 Toronto Fringe Festival. It then launched Soulpepper Theatre Company’s 2012 season, toured across Canada, and was adapted into a TV series of the same name with Thunderbird Entertainment on CBC and Netflix for five seasons. Ins was a writer, executive producer, and co-creator of the TV series. He also wrote the plays Subway Stations of the Cross, Bad Parent, Son of a Preacherman, and was part of the collective that created the plays, Alligator Pie, re(birth): ee cummings in song, Window on Toronto (Soulpepper), and 2000 Candles (Brookstone). YOU PRODUCTIONS (Co-Producer). Terence Rodia began as an actor before becoming a choreographer, director, and founder of the YOU brand an international talent agency and production company. He won the Forty Under Forty Award in 2023 and is a 2024 finalist for the Great British Entrepreneur Awards’ Service Industries Entrepreneur of the Year.

MEGHAN PRESSMAN ( Managing Director/CEO, she/her ) joined Center Theatre Group in 2019. Previously, she served as Managing Director of Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company (D.C.), Director of Development for Signature Theatre (N.Y.), and Associate Managing Director of Berkeley Rep. She is a graduate of Yale School of Drama/Yale School of Management and serves as a mentor in the Theater Management program. Meghan has served as the Vice-Chair for the Theatre Communications Group Board of Directors and is a member of the Broadway League.

SNEHAL DESAI (Brindell and Milton Gottlieb Artistic Director, he/him) was appointed Center Theatre Group's third Artistic Director in 2023. As an artistic leader, Snehal has sought to raise awareness of social issues that affect Angelenos through impactful and empowering storytelling. Previously, he was the Producing Artistic Director of East West Players. For CTG, Snehal most recently directed American Idiot and Here Lies Love at the Mark Taper Forum.

GORDON DAVIDSON (Founding Artistic Director) led the Taper throughout its first 38 seasons, guiding over 300 productions to its stage and winning countless awards for himself and the theatre—including the Tony Award for theatrical excellence, Margo Jones Award, The Governor’s Award for the Arts, and a Guggenheim fellowship. The Kentucky Cycle and Angels in America (Part One) won the Pulitzer in consecutive years and, in 1994, three of the four plays nominated for the Tony Award for Best Play were from the Taper (Angels in America won). In 1989, Gordon took over the Ahmanson and, in 2004, he produced the inaugural season in the Kirk Douglas Theatre.

DOUGLAS C. BAKER ( Producing Director, he/him ) joined Center Theatre Group in 1990. Doug is an active member of the Broadway League, the Independent Presenters Network (IPN), and is a proud member of the Association of Theatrical Press Agents and Managers (ATPAM). In 2013, Doug received the Broadway League’s prestigious Outstanding Achievement in Presenter Management Award.

NAUSICA STERGIOU (General Manager) has worked supporting artists in theatres of all shapes, sizes, and locales including Center Theatre Group as General Manager and, previously, as Audience Development Director. She oversees productions at the Taper and Douglas, as well as new play commissions and developmental productions. Nausica has taught Marketing and Management at USC’s School of Dramatic Arts and works with local nonprofits including Hollywood Orchard. BA, Cornell University. MFA, Yale School of Drama.

ERIC SIMS (General Manager, Presentations, he/him) joined CTG in 2005 and has served in various capacities, including as the Director of Operations for the Kirk Douglas Theatre from 2008-2018. Previously, he was the Managing Director of the Powerhouse Theatre in Santa Monica. He is the Vice President of the Culver City Downtown Business Association and was the Co-Chair of the Ovation Rules Committee, producing the Ovation Awards from 2015-2019.

We honor and pay respect to their elders and descendants — past, present and emerging — as they continue their stewardship of these lands and waters.
