SUPER TROUPER ABBA FANS

HOW ABBA’S MUSICAL IMPACT HAS SPANNED GENERATIONS OF MUSICIANS.

Mamma Mia! lands at the Ahmanson as a part of the 25th Anniversary tour, celebrating years of ABBA’s music and generations of fans. We spoke with a DJ and a Musician who celebrate ABBA in their work about the Swedish band’s resonance with themselves and fans.

ABBA Night Co-Founder and Co-DJ

ABBA has been Jordy Scheinberg’s favorite band for as long as she can remember. But when she sought out dancefloors to dance to her favorite band’s music, she could never find quite the right vibe. Scheinberg would go to Monty Bar in DTLA and take over their jukebox with all ABBA hits. But once they got rid of the jukebox, Scheinberg needed a new spot. So she joined forces with her childhood friend and DJ, Shelby Jacobson, to launch ABBA Night. ABBA Night is a party that mixes ABBA music with disco hits at different venues, like Zebulon in Frogtown. “There is such a palpable shift when ABBA comes on,” Scheinberg said. “Everyone loves ABBA.” Scheinberg is a millennial, but says that ABBA Night has been a fun night for all generations. “Older men come up to us and say ‘I can’t believe you know these songs...I haven’t heard these songs in a club in 40 years’...and now... there have been a lot of 21st birthdays at ABBA night.” But no matter the venue, ABBA Night brings Scheinberg and Jacobson back to the joy of their childhoods, blasting ABBA’s Greatest Hits on cassette in Jacobson’s mom’s car.

A LOOK AT CTG’S SPRING 2026 CAREER FAIR

Odds are, you’re sitting in this theatre because you are a supporter of the arts. To take it a step further, you might even be a lover of the arts. And this might be a bold assumption, but maybe you’re even an artist yourself. Regardless of where you fall on the scale, you’re likely aware of how daunting it is to take on a career in the arts. It’s rare to find free, informative, empowering resources on where to begin.

Luckily, multiple times a year, CTG’s Education & Community Partnerships team gathers its network of local arts leaders to offer an afternoon of workshops, panels, and networking opportunities to aspiring arts professionals. Each event is geared toward a different stage in an attendee’s professional journey. Whether you're a high school student just beginning to explore higher education and career options, a college student preparing to transition to the professional world, or are early in your career looking for resources and support, you can take advantage of these resources.

On May 16th, 2026, early career and emerging professionals gathered at the Going Pro Career Fair. At 9AM, the impressive number of attendees formed a line that stretched all the way around the block. Once inside, attendees had access to a resource fair, free headshot photography, and networking opportunities over burgers for lunch. Plus, three presentations: Navigating the First Three Years After College, Financial Empowerment, and Demystifying the Individual Grant Process for Artists, two of which were so well-attended that they had standing room only! The theme of the day was Financial Empowerment, a topic each of the presentations addressed. The Music Center Annex was abuzz with attendees eager to absorb information about where to begin in their field. Let’s see what they had to say!

“Until coming here today, I always thought that I was crazy for pursuing this type of career. That’s what everyone tells me. Now, after coming here, I see that there are others out there who share the same goals. I liked the financial workshop because I feel like that’s something often overlooked. A lot of actors just focus on the acting. They don’t stop to think about, ‘How am I going to support myself?’”

“I’ve survived my first year outside of college and it’s the first time in my life that school hasn’t given me structure, [so] this was super helpful to me. I found the panel of people who were talking about your first three years after graduation very reassuring. I was like, ‘Okay, everybody else is figuring this out and maybe ending up in unexpected places.’ “

“I really liked the second workshop about financial empowerment. [The speaker] is so good, so empowering, so funny. It was real with all the logistics and realities of the artist, so [it was] helpful. I also really relate to her personal story. I’m kind of like, ‘Oh! I have hope!’”

“My favorite part of the day was the grant section. It was incredibly insightful to have some sort of structure to be able to navigate [applying for grants]. It’s really nice to know you’re not alone and are able to look forward with optimism.”

“I really liked getting to talk with all the other participants [at] this fair. During lunch time, I got to learn a lot about how other people do their art and just connect with a bunch of other people.”

La Cita

Also steps away from The Music Center and Grand Central Market is La Cita, often playing a mix of reggaeton, cumbia, hip-hop, and more on the dance floor.

BUTCHONA

ECHO PARK / VARIOUS LOCATIONS (21+)

Every fourth Sunday of the month, this queer and lesbian DJ collective hosts an evening of dancing to corridos, quebradita, and banda music at Little Joy. They also have events across Los Angeles dedicated to different genres and sometimes featuring lessons.

Honey’s At Star Love

EAST HOLLYWOOD (21+)

Nestled behind a wooden door inside a Super 8 Motel on Western is a tropical-themed queer bar and dance floor.

Dance DTLA at The Music Center

DTLA (ALL AGES)

Each Friday during the summer, The Music Center hosts a dance class on the Jerry Moss Plaza. They switch up the genre each week, with past classes specializing in Bollywood, Afro Beats, Cumbia, and, of course, Disco!

Bar Sinister at Boardner's by La Belle

HOLLYWOOD (21+)

For the Wednesday Addams type dancing divas, Bar Sinister has been a go-to goth dance spot for nearly 30 years. Leave your Hot Topic ideas of goth behind and be prepared for some serious goth moves.

HOLLYWOOD (21+)

This Cuban nightclub offers free Salsa on Tuesdays and Bachata on Wednesdays.

Akbar

SILVER LAKE (21+)

This neighborhood gay bar does it all—it’s always packed and it’s always a good time!

Los Globos

SILVERLAKE (18+)

Los Globos has two dancefloors and a variety of different events each week across genres and styles on Sunset.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and Breakroom 86

KOREATOWN (21+)

If Disco is what you are looking for, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang delivers. This 70s-themed bar is full of disco balls, neon, and dancers on rollerskates. And right next door is Breakroom 86 for the 80s kids out there, with a wall of CRTVs and arcade games, 80s music hits, and a rotating cast of Michael Jackson impersonators and dancers that perform at midnight and 1AM on weekends.

Lincoln Heights Senior Center

LINCOLN HEIGHTS (60+)

A live band starting at noon each Thursday sets the stage for a bachata, cumbia, merengue and norteño dance party at the Lincoln Heights Senior Center.

Skinny’s Lounge

NORTH HOLLYWOOD (21+)

This one’s for the Valley girls! A classic club with a variety of DJs for all your dancing dreams right off of Lankershim.

Pasadena Ballroom Dance Association

PASADENA (ALL AGES)

If you want a different kind of Saturday Night Fever, the association’s Saturday night dances start with a swing lesson followed by a few hours on the dance floor accompanied by a live band!

The Victorian SANTA MONICA (21+)

This charming Victorian home-turned-bar has salsa classes on Thursday nights and DJ parties both day and night during the weekend.

Zebulon

SILVERLAKE / FROGTOWN (21+)

This French-owned music venue and bar moved here from Brooklyn in 2017 (many such cases) and houses a variety of genres and DJs on their dancefloors. They’ve hosted Abba Night, Y2K nights, and even a surprise show from The Dare in recent months.

El Cid

SILVERLAKE (ALL AGES, 21+)

Down a long flight of stairs is this Mexican restaurant with a large back patio and dance floor. And if you’re not inclined to dance yourself but still want in on the action, why not swing by their 7PM Flamenco dance show dinners? Now those are some dancing queens!

Sunset Salsa

One Sunday each month at the Sunset Triangle Plaza, Sunset Salsa offers free a free class followed by a dance party for folks to dance the night away under the stars.

Beaches Tropicana

WEST HOLLYWOOD (21+)

Dance to gay pop classics at a tropical getaway in the former location of Heart WeHo.

Camille’s at The Bellweather

WESTLAKE (21+)

Named after Prince’s unreleased album of the same name, Camille’s is a “disco-meets-warehouse" space near The Music Center for when you’re looking for a place to dance for the afters.

Teragram Ballroom

WESTLAKE (18+ OR 21+)

Teragram is always hosting something. Be it last year’s Broadway Rave or Shrek Rave, there are also a ton of different genres and subgenres for any kind of music you’re looking for.

The Virgil

VIRGIL VILLAGE (21+)

The Virgil’s two dancefloors are full of throwback events like 2010s night, 90s night, and an homage to The Tumblr Era (2014, in case you didn’t know).

KCRW Summer Nights

VARIOUS LOCATIONS (ALL AGES)

KCRW hosts a summer series of DJs and dancing across Los Angeles at museums and other cultural centers across the city. Some spots this year include the Wende Museum, LACMA, the Autry Museum, Union Station, the NoHo Arts District, and Grand Performances in DTLA. A full calendar can be found on their website.

ABBA LA Band Leader and Singer

Laura Bradley started off in metal music. Her mother was always an ABBA fan, but it wasn’t until Bradley's partner and guitarist from her band, Symphonic Metal, invited her to a metal ABBA cover show in Big Bear that she caught the ABBA bug. While a metal ABBA cover band was a hard sell—a regular ABBA cover band was not—and so, the ABBA LA tribute band was born. The group has toured venues throughout the Southwest since 2019. Bradley says their shows are truly intergenerational—with fans ranging from toddlers to folks in their 90s. “It is a multigenerational phenomenon, unlike any other band,”

Bradley said. As a musician, she finds herself drawn to their ahead-of-their-time production and techniques— like multi-layered vocals and analog synths—that make the 70s band the mothers of modern pop production. While she loves performing “When I Kissed the Teacher,” “The Winner Takes it All,” and “Super Trouper,” there is no song like “Dancing Queen.” “Everyone gets on their feet and sings, and it’s always our last song, because you can’t come back after that,” Bradley said. “You have delighted anywhere from 200 to 9000 people and they’re on such a music high that has brought them either memories or absolute joy or healing.”

JUDY CRAYMER ( Creator/Producer ) originated the idea for Mamma Mia! and in 1996 founded Littlestar Services Limited with Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus and Richard East to produce the stage musical in London. She has since produced over 50 productions of Mamma Mia! in 16 languages worldwide. In recognition of her international success, Judy received a Woman of the Year Award in 2002 and was appointed CBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in 2020 for services to theater and charity. In 2008, she produced Mamma Mia! The Movie, starring Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan, which received Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations and grossed over $600 million worldwide. She later produced Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. From September 2021 to January 2023, Judy served as Chairman of the Board and Independent Non-Executive Director of Universal Music Group. Mamma Mia! celebrated its 25th anniversary in London’s West End in April 2024, and Judy was thrilled by the show’s recent return to Broadway.

RICHARD EAST (Producer ) is an originating producer of Mamma Mia!, having been involved since its inception. A Tony nominee, he has worked in the entertainment business for 35 years in Australia, London and the U.S.

BJÖRN ULVAEUS (Music & Lyrics) was born April 25, 1945, in Gothenburg. In the mid-’50s, Björn fell in love with rock ’n’ roll and skiffle. By the early ’60s, he was a member of a folk group called The West Bay Singers. 1966: Björn met with Benny Andersson, a member of Sweden’s number-one pop group, The Hep Stars. 1970: Björn and Benny started releasing records as a duo. 1972–82: ABBA. 1982: Björn and Benny started writing the musical Chess with Tim Rice. 1986: Chess opened in London’s West End. 1990: Björn and Benny started to write a new musical. Kristina From Duvemala opened 1995. Björn writes most of the lyrics for the Benny Andersson Orchestra and has involved himself in the stagings of Mamma Mia! 2008: Mamma Mia! The Movie was released. 2016: Mamma Mia! The Party opened in Stockholm, with Björn as one of the producers. 2018: Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again was released.

2021: ABBA announced the release of the first album in 40 years, Voyage, as well as a virtual stage show, Voyage, which opened in a new custom-built arena in London in 2022. Björn is president of CISAC, an umbrella organisation for all royalty collecting societies for songwriters in the world.

BENNY ANDERSON (Composer) was born December 16, 1946, in Stockholm. 1952: He received accordion lessons from his father and grandfather. 1964–68: Benny was a member of The Hep Stars, Sweden’s most popular rock band in the ’60s. During this time, he began composing music. “Sunny Girl” and “Wedding” were huge hits for The Hep Stars. 1972–82: ABBA. 1982–84: Benny composed the music (together with Björn Ulvaeus and Tim Rice) for the musical Chess. 1987: He began collaborating with Orsa Spelman rooted in Swedish folk music. 1990–95: Working with Björn, Benny composed the music to Kristina fran Duvemala, which premiered in October 1995. 1995: Received the title of professor from the Swedish government. 2001: His collaboration with Orsa Spelman led to the formation of Benny Andersson’s Orchestra, a 16-man constellation with vocalists Helen Sjoholm and Tommy Korberg. This has resulted in 11 albums and several summer tours. 2007: Benny was inducted into the Royal Swedish Academy of Music. 2008: Was appointed Honorary Doctor of the College of Humanities at Stockholm University, and at Luleå University of Technology in 2012. Founder of ABBA Voyage, a virtual stage show, which opened in London in 2022.

ANDREW BRUCE (Sound Designer) began his theatre career at Glyndebourne Festival Opera in 1968 and was appointed head of sound at the Royal Opera House in 1971. A year later, he co-founded Autograph Sound, a leading British sound design and rental company that celebrated its 50th year in 2022. He was appointed Associate Sound Designer for Evita, Cats, and Starlight Express and Sound Consultant on the original Paris version of Les Misérables in 1981. He subsequently designed the sound for the 1985 London production and all its reproductions. As a steward of The Music Center of Los Angeles County, we recognize that we occupy land originally and still inhabited and cared for by the Tongva, Tataviam, Serrano, Kizh and Chumash Peoples. We honor and pay respect to their elders and descendants — past, present and emerging — as they continue their stewardship of these lands and waters. We acknowledge that settler colonization resulted in land seizure, disease, subjugation, slavery, relocation, broken promises, genocide and multigenerational trauma. This acknowledgment demonstrates our responsibility and commitment to truth, healing and reconciliation and to elevating the stories, culture and community of the original inhabitants of Los Angeles County.
