Nothing ends a perfect day on the slopes quite like a refreshing libation. While you could order a cocktail or open a bottle of wine, there’s something uniquely Coloradan about an après ski craft beer. The state’s craft brewing scene has exploded in the last decade, and Winter Park is no exception. You can find just about any style of beer imaginable being brewed in the Fraser Valley. We’ve talked with three of Winter Park’s breweries about their unique creations.
THE PEAK If you’re looking for a good après ski beer, stouts are a great place to start. The Peak has a couple variations on this classic. The first is a cold brew coffee stout. Rather then brewing coffee with hot water, cold brewed coffee is made by soaking grounds in water over night. The process imparts smoother, less acidic flavor to the beer said brewmaster Tom Caldwell. The Peak also offers a milk stout. Caldwell adds lactose, or milk sugar, giving the dark beer a creamy flavor. The beer is also brewed with oats. “It’s kind of like breakfast to go,” Caldwell said. For the typical hophead, Caldwell has a couple of new IPAs that you don’t want to miss. The Idlewild IPA is a citrusy creation infused with Citra, Amarillo and Australian Galaxy hops. “They’re kind of hard hops to find, but I can usually find them in smaller batches,” Caldwell said.
Caldwell’s Rye IPA is another crowd pleaser. The addition of Rye malt lends the ale a more malty, tangy flavor, and the beer’s color is a little more orange than a typical IPA, Caldwell said. For the more adventurous palate, Caldwell suggests his Pomegranate Blueberry Wheat. It’s an American-style wheat bear brewed with PomWonderful Blueberry Juice, which gives the beer a tart but not overly sweet taste. If you’ve got a taste for lagers, try the Number 9. Though it’s technically a pale ale, the beer is brewed with pilsner malt, giving it a hybrid character, Caldwell said. It’s light in color and contains about 5 percent alcohol by volume The Peak is an all-grain brewery, which means Caldwell forgoes extracts and the like, opting for an all-natural process with all of his beers. The brews are unfiltered.
HIDEAWAY PARK BREWERY Quietly tucked into a row of shops on U.S. Highway 40 in downtown Winter Park, Hideaway Park Brewery is easy to miss. That’s a shame. Since opening about a year ago, Andy Brumenschenkel’s diminutive watering hole has quickly become a local favorite. For one, it’s all about the beer. Hideaway Park Brewery doesn’t serve food, though patrons are welcome to bring their own from any number of restaurants within walking distance. Right now, Brumenschenkel says his favorite is the TOADally Fresh Pale Ale, a crisp and refreshing wet-hopped beer. Wet hopping means the hops in the beer go from vine to brew in less than 24 hours. Brumenschenkel picks the hops himself near Palisade.

“It’s a fun beer because it’s a beer that you can only do once a year,” Brumenschenkel said. For stout lovers, the brewery’s chai stout is a can’t-miss. The toasted malt and creamy flavor of a milk stout melds well with a hint of chai, giving the beer an exotic character. The BruBrew IPA is another fan favorite. It’s a West Coast-style IPA with American and New Zealand hops that imbue it with a citrusy finish. For those really cold winter nights, the Rye Not Try It Stout offers a unique take on the classic style. The addition of Rye malt add a spicy note to the beer’s coffee and chocolate flavors.
MOFFAT STATION BREWERY For those who want to stay closer to Winter Park Resort, Moffat Station Brewery at Winter Park Mountain Lodge is literally right across the street. Brew Master Chris Kirk has assembled a stable of mountain-themed beers that are sure to keep your palate guessing. The brewery typically offers four to five beers and two rotating seasonals, said Food and Beverage Manager Kristen Miknyoczki. The Snow Saison, Rugged IPA, U.S. 40 Stout, Trail Pale Ale and Rye Lager are the staples. The Snow Saison, a Belgian-style farmhouse ale, is a guest favorite, Myknyoczki said. The U.S. 40 Stout is also popular. It’s a full-bodied stout with chocolate and coffee notes – perfect after a cold day on the mountain. Moffat Station’s current seasonal offerings are a pumpkin spiced amber ale and an Oktoberfest-style beer.
