In 2026, hairdressing continues to be a creative, people-focused career where individuality, skill and ambition come together. It offers a pathway full of possibility and real opportunity.
Hairdressers and barbers do more than just cut and style hair - they change lives. By boosting clients' confidence, lifting their spirits, and sometimes offering a listening ear during tough times, hairdressers become a vital part of their clients' lives. The sense of community within the industry is unparalleled, with mentorship, friendship, and support being integral to professional development.
From bustling city salons to the glamour of fashion runways, hairdressing and barbering offer a wealth of dynamic opportunities. Whether you’re crafting a bold new look, offering personalised consultations, or styling for a photoshoot, every day brings something new and exciting. It’s a career full of vibrant, rewarding experiences.
The industry is filled with stories of individuals who have successfully forged their own paths, building flourishing
businesses even in challenging times. This resilience and adaptability showcase the boundless potential for growth and success within hairdressing.
Hairdressing is a true art form. From the first time you style a practice mannequin, you're tapping into your creativity. As your skills develop, so does your capacity for innovation, with each day presenting new opportunities to experiment with styles, colours, and techniques, allowing your creativity to truly shine.
The world of hairdressing evolves alongside fashion and beauty trends, making it a field ripe with continuous learning opportunities. As a hairdresser, you’ll always be at the forefront of new techniques, products, and styles. This ensures the industry remains dynamic and keeps you growing both professionally and personally.
“A creative career where your personality becomes your strength”

Around 9 in 10 UK shoppers say sustainability is important when choosing products, and many are willing to pay more for eco-friendly options. Salons are responding with greener brands, refill schemes and better recycling, making sustainable hair services a growing priority on the high street.
Surveys show 9 out of 10 hairdressers say their job lets them express their creativity every day – from colour transformations and braids to editorial styling and social content. Hairdressing remains one of the most creatively fulfilling careers for people who love bringing ideas to life.
A recent survey found that 70% of people feel a boost in self-confidence after a salon visit, and more than two-thirds see it as an essential part of self-care. Hairdressers support clients’ mental wellbeing as much as their hairstyle.
For many people, visiting a salon or barbershop builds long-term loyalty, and studies show millions of Brits feel more loyal to their hair or beauty professional than to their partner! Those regular hair appointments often turn into long-term friendships.

Britain now has around 20,000 independent barbers, and barbershops are still one of the fastest-growing parts of the high street. Demand for fresh fades, beard grooming and men's self-care keeps the barbering sector busy, with new shops opening in towns and cities across the UK.
Around 3 in 5 people working in hairdressing and barbering are now self-employed, running home salons, renting chairs or working mobile. This freelance boom gives professionals more control over their hours, earnings and work–life balance.
“Hairdressing is one of the most creative, confidence-boosting careers you can choose”
From eco-conscious clients and confidence-boosting salon visits to the rise of self-employed stylists, these stats show why the UK hair industry is packed with opportunities!

Have a look through our career ladder to help guide you towards an exciting and fulfilling journey in the world of hair!

Fresh from winning Creative Head’s Education Award, Rachael Lomax chats about her love of copper tones and mentoring Concept Hair star Molly Rayner.
Q: Huge congrats on winning Creative Head’s Most Wanted Award for Education! How did it feel to win?
A: I’m so proud and over the moon! It means the world to have my copper-only education recognised.
Q: When did the name “Copper Queen” come about?
A: During lockdown, while chatting with my social media coach, Vivienne Johns. We realised coppers and reds were my true passion – and Copper Queen was born.
Q: What sets your copper creations apart?
A: I see colour rather than just the tube of colour. I approach it in a different way - from

a tonal perspective - which helps me create unique copper shades every time.
Q: Can you walk us through a day in the life of the Copper Queen – what does a typical day look like for you?
A: First comes the school run! Then I always get to the salon early – I love to prepare for the day. I’ll usually do a TikTok or Instagram Story, and sometimes I’ll create or prep colour swatches for clients.
I work one-to-one, so I usually have around three colour clients a day. In between, I’ll write notes and create content before, during and after each service. I might go live on Instagram or Facebook, then finish around 5pm – though sometimes I’ll do another live from home after dinner!

“Get a strong foundation early on.
Be like a sponge –soak it all in!”

“The best things happen when you step out of your comfort zone”
Q: You’ve trained so many stylists through Copper Queen Education – what’s your number one tip for mastering copper tones?
A: Make sure you have a solid foundation in colour theory and understand the science behind colour. That’s the key.
Q: You’ve also met Molly Rayner – one of our Concept Hair Learner of the Year winners –who now rents a chair from you. What’s impressed you most about her?
Q: What are your top tips for entering awards and competitions?
A: Don’t be afraid! The best things happen when you step out of your comfort zone. If you have something to share, put your heart and soul into it – it always shows.
Q: What’s next for you and Copper Queen Education?

I’m hoping to work with more colleges and collaborate with more brands. I just want to keep growing and sharing the copper love!
Q: And finally, if you could sum up your career in three words, what would they be?
A: Inspiring, creative and passionate.
A: Molly is incredibly passionate and such a natural educator. She loves teaching the next generation, just like I do – she’s a real asset to the industry.
Q: Has there been a moment in your career when you thought, “Yes – this is what I’m meant to do”?
A: Absolutely – from day one! But even more so during my very first training session with L’Oréal. That’s when I knew I was completely sold on education.
Q: For learners dreaming of following in your footsteps, what’s the best advice you’d give them?
A: Get a strong foundation early on. Be like a sponge – soak it all in! We’re always learning, but that core education will set you up for the future.

Michelle Griffin is a multi award-winning hairdresser and educator, founder of Loxbox and Vice President of The Fellowship for British Hairdressing, known for creating opportunities for industry talent.
My journey with The Fellowship started as a young salon owner. I have always trained my own salon team and quickly realised that The Fellowship offered a powerful education platform to help steer them towards becoming the best of the best.
My aim was to become a team leader and mentor, so I took on the role of Colour Project Leader and Mentor for three years. I organised programmes of education with some of the top colourists in our industry, mentoring the team each month, putting them on stage at Salon International, and creating compelling photoshoots that featured in publications and front-cover magazine shoots.

@loxboxextensions
I supported my salon team to enter Fellowship projects, such as the Club-Star Art Team, the Colour Project, Project Sassoon and the F.A.M.E. Team. Watching them grow into salon owners, independent specialists, fashion week creatives and internationally award-winning mentors has been one of the highlights of my career.

“The Fellowship is your next step”
I am now Vice President of The Fellowship for British Hairdressing and currently in the running for President. This role would allow me to create even more opportunities and clearer pathways for young stylists, salon owners and college lecturers. If you would like to become a platform artist, mentor, assist industry icons, or specialise in a particular area of this incredible industry, The Fellowship is your next step.
I joined the Executive Board 16 years ago, helping to develop new projects and scholarships. I also created Project Extend, now led by two former members of my team.
Michelle Griffin x Love,
The salon world keeps moving, and employer expectations continue to evolve. In 2026, salons are placing even greater value on mindset, professionalism, and how learners show up day to day, alongside their technical training.

If you’re aiming for an apprenticeship or your first salon role, here’s a simple checklist to help you stand out for all the right reasons.
1 CURIOUS AND KEEN TO LEARN: You ask questions, listen carefully, and take feedback on board.
2 RELIABLE AND PROFESSIONAL:
You arrive on time, look presentable, and follow through on what you’re asked to do.
3 CALM, ATTITUDE:CONFIDENT
You’re comfortable around clients and stay composed in a busy salon environment.
“Skills develop over time – attitude
shows immediately”

“Salons want people they can trust, train, and grow with”

4 POSITIVE ENERGY: You bring warmth, enthusiasm, and a friendly presence to the salon floor.
5 GOOD COMMUNICATION SKILLS:
You listen well, speak clearly, and aren’t afraid to ask for guidance.
6 AWARENESS OF THE SALON’S STYLE: You understand the salon’s brand, values, and the type of clients they work with.
7 SHOWS INITIATIVE:
You notice what needs doing and step in without being asked.

8 DIGITALLY AWARE: You understand how salons use social media, online bookings, and digital tools.

9 EMOTIONALLY AWARE: You handle feedback maturely and adapt to different people and situations.
10 COMMITTED TO THE INDUSTRY:
You see hairdressing or barbering as a long-term career and want to progress.

You don’t need to be an influencer to use social media well. For apprentices and students, a strong social media presence can help you get noticed, track your progress and create opportunities.
Used well, social media can help you:
■ Show your skills and work ethic to potential employers
■ Build a portfolio before you’re fully qualified
■ Pick up tips and inspiration from experienced hair professionals
■ Attract future clients if you go self-employed
■ Stand out when applying for jobs or apprenticeships
Many employers now check Instagram, TikTok or LinkedIn before interviews –so make your feed work for you.

Here are some top tips for creating content using your phone:
■ Film vertically (9:16) for TikTok, Reels and Shorts
■ Clean your camera lens
■ Use natural light where possible
■ Keep clips short (5–20 seconds)
■ Film more than you think you’ll need
You don’t need years of experience – people genuinely enjoy following the journey. Content ideas include:
■ “A day in the life of a hairdressing/ barbering student or apprentice”
■ Before & after of a practice cut or style
■ First attempt vs latest attempt
■ Tools I use as a student/apprentice
■ Setting up my workstation for the day
■ Common beginner mistakes

Leigh Kerr shares how competitions can help learners grow in confidence, skills and self-belief.
By Laura Leigh Kerr, Director of Rainbow Room International Academy & Howard Street Salon.
Having been recognised at some of the industry’s most prestigious awards – including winning Educator of the Year three years in a row at the British Hairdressing Business Awards – I can say from experience that entering competitions has been an invaluable part of my growth, both personally and professionally.
Competitions offer the chance to challenge yourself, hone your craft, think creatively, and showcase your talent under pressure. One of the most significant benefits is the opportunity to step outside your comfort zone. For many learners, this can feel intimidating. Yet it’s often in these moments of discomfort that the greatest growth takes place.
When you take the leap into competitions, you learn to cope with nerves, adapt quickly, and gain the confidence to trust your skills. You may not always walk away with a trophy, but the experience can open doors to new

opportunities – from increased visibility and networking with industry leaders, to receiving valuable feedback that can fuel your development.

“The experience can open doors to new opportunities”

As Training Director of Rainbow Room International, I encourage all learners to embrace this challenge. Here are a few tips for preparing for competitions:
1
Start With A Plan – Before you even pick up your tools, map out your concept. Understand the theme or challenge of the competition and make sure you can execute your vision clearly and confidently. Read the rules and criteria, follow them carefully, and ensure everything is covered.
2
Practice Makes Perfect – Don’t wait until the last minute to start practising. Repetition is key to mastering your techniques and feeling confident with the process.
3
Learn From Others – Watch tutorials, attend workshops, and study past winners. Surround yourself with inspiration and feedback that can help you refine your craft.
4
Stay Calm Under Pressure
– Competing can be nervewracking, but remember, it’s about the journey as much as the destination. Focus on staying present and trusting your process.
5
Be Open To Feedback –
Whether you win or not, listen to judges and peers who offer constructive criticism. It all plays a part in your development.
“Competitions are a powerful way to test your abilities, gain recognition, and build confidence”
For learners just starting out, stepping into unfamiliar territory can feel daunting – yet this is often where real progress happens.
Competitions are a powerful way to test your abilities, gain recognition, and build confidence.

“Use social media to showcase your work”

7:00am – Wake up! First things first – coffee and vitamins. I can’t function without that morning coffee.
7:30am – Shower, skincare routine and hair. There’s no better way to start the day than feeling fresh and confident
8:15am – Walk to work through the city centre. I never get bored of the scenery – it’s my motivation boost for the day ahead.
9:00am – First client of the day. I work in one-hour appointment slots, and no two are ever the same. I like the variety – it keeps me inspired
1:00pm – Lunchtime… if I manage to take it! I’m trying to get better at this because even 20 minutes away from the chair makes a huge difference.
1:30pm – Afternoon clients, usually regulars. This part of the day feels more relaxed, and I often use it to create any content needed. I work alongside Larnie, who looks after clients booking facials alongside their haircuts.
6:00pm – Finish my last client, then clean the shop and prep everything for the following day.
8:00pm – Create content from anything I filmed during the day. I aim to post at least three reels a week.

5 STEPS TO BECOMING A BARBER:

From PIVOT POINT’S online learning platform LAB, this step-by-step demonstrates a soft natural movement, to enhance a blow dry finish or as preparation for hair-up style.

The diagram shows the section pattern and that alternating directions are used to curl the lengths to create greater movement.

Section out a diagonal-back parting. Apply heat protector as you work through each section. Starting on the left side and taking 3cm square sections, allow the hair to naturally twist as it wraps around the tong (roots to points) and wind off the face. Wind to the ends, then close the tong.

Gently release the hair.

Hold the curl and allow to cool.

Repeat on the 2nd section, winding towards the face.

Continue repeating the twist wrapping in opposite directions while working to the centre-back.

Wrap the last three partings at the crown in the same direction to avoid a split.

Comb hair through with large tooth comb.
Rework volume and movement throughout the head, shaping with your fingers.

Repeat on opposite side of head.

Apply texture spray throughout the hair.

The finish shows soft movement and volume. This technique can be used as a stand-alone styling technique to enhance a blow dry, or preparation for a hair-up look.

A brand ambassador is a stylist who represents a hair brand by promoting its products, creating content, and reflecting the brand’s values.

Tracey tells his story of rejecting expectations, starting again aged 27, and building a career he genuinely loves with Slunks Hair Club and the Crazy Color Pro Team.
I’m Oli Tracey, a Senior Stylist and Educator at Slunks Hair Club in the heart of Cardiff. I’ve been part of the Slunks family for five years and joined the Crazy Color Pro Team in 2023 – and I’ve loved every second of it.

@oli.tracey @crazycolorpro

My journey into hair wasn’t the standard ‘college at 16, qualified by 18’ story. In fact, it took me until I was 27 to finally follow my passion
Although I worked in a salon (Chameleon in Glynneath) between 2007 and 2011, I was adamant I wasn’t going to be a hairdresser. Back then, teachers and family would discourage me from hairdressing because I had good grades at school. Looking back, that mindset feels outdated. Today, I am achieving more in this career than I ever did in my previous roles. Starting over at 27 was terrifying. I had a house, a car, and adult responsibilities to fund. Coming out of the 2020 pandemic unemployed and living on Universal Credit, the idea of an apprentice wage felt daunting. I honestly thought I’d missed my chance. But when Slunks offered me the opportunity in April 2021, I knew I was exactly where I was meant to be. Since then, my career has soared.

06:15am - The Reset. I’ve recently overhauled my lifestyle. A morning workout or run before 07:30am keeps me sharp and ready for the day.
09:00am - Salon Prep.
I arrive at Slunks, check the diary, and get the towels in the wash. I use this time to grab a coffee and brainstorm content ideas for the day.
10:00am - First Client. From here, it’s go-time.
The "Lunch" Break - I’d love to say I have a structured break, but salon life is unpredictable. It’s all about quick thinking and problem-solving to make people feel amazing. No two days are ever the same.
18:00pm - Unwind.
I head home to relax with dinner and some "reality TV trash". There’s something strangely calming about watching grown people argue over nothing after a high-energy day in the salon!
to see Oli’s day in action!!

“No two days are ever the same”
“We have the power to help people feel confident in themselves”
MY 3 TOP TIPS!
★ USE SOCIAL MEDIA WELL – POST CONSISTENTLY, SHOW YOUR WORK, AND TREAT INSTAGRAM AS PART OF YOUR PROFESSIONAL TOOLKIT.
★ MASTER THE BASICS FIRST –PROPER TRAINING, PATIENCE, AND HUMILITY WILL TAKE YOU FURTHER THAN RUSHING AHEAD.
★ LOVE WHAT YOU DO –HAIRDRESSING DEMANDS ENERGY, CARE, AND COMMITMENT. PASSION MAKES THE DIFFERENCE.

PASSION FOR MENTORING AND ENCOURAGING OTHERS
An Educator is a passionate education developer dedicated to passing on knowledge to help others reach their full potential.
STRONG TECHNICAL EXPERTISE
A CONTINUOUS LEARNING MINDSET

Senior Education Developer Bobbi shares her journey from growing up in a hairdressing household to leading education for L’Oréal Professionnel, driven by a love of learning, mentoring, and building confidence.
Growing up with a hairdresser mum, I loved watching her work, so I studied Theatrical Hair and Makeup at college and was determined to enter fashion-focused salons. I researched locally, sent my CV, secured an interview, and began a ten-year journey working across the UK. I later moved into freelance education, then educating full time.
My career highlights include becoming a L’Oréal Colour Specialist and being a project lead for the ID Artist programme. My happy place is being surrounded by hairdressers, sharing knowledge and building people’s confidence.

@bobbi_murray_pro @lorealpro

6:00am – I stayed in a hotel close to where I was working, so it was an early start. I woke up, got ready, and checked out.
7:00am – A quick breakfast to set me up for the day, then off to the venue.
8:00am – Arrival at the venue to set up for the event. We prepped goody bags and had a team briefing.
9:00am – We were working at East Kent College in Broadstairs, hosting a student event.
10:00am – The event began, with over 150 students checked in
11:00am – The morning focused on an introduction to L’Oréal Professionnel and what we offer as a brand.
12:00pm – Becky, an ID Artist, delivered a live colour demonstration
1:00pm – While Becky’s colour developed, two students took part in live hair-up demonstrations.
2:00pm – We ran a goal-setting session looking ahead to 2026, followed by Becky returning to style the finished look.
3:00pm – The event closed, we packed down, and began our journeys home.
4:00pm – I had a 110-mile drive ahead, so I put the heated seats on and listened to a podcast.
5:00pm – Stuck in rush-hour traffic.
6:00pm – Arrived home, changed, cooked dinner, walked the dog, and relaxed with some TV.
7:00pm – I wrapped up the day with some admin, usually on the sofa with my laptop, before an early night.

A session stylist is the unseen architect of fashion imagery, shaping hair that defines mood, movement, and character across runways, editorials, and campaigns.

A MASTER OF TECHNIQUE CALM UNDER PRESURE A STRONG CREATIVE EYE

London-based, international session
stylist Syd Hayes is renowned for creating bold, character-driven hair with instinct, precision, and versatility.
Known for his intuitive understanding of hair texture, Syd’s work moves effortlessly between dramatic transformations and natural, understated styles. A trusted creative partner to some of the world’s leading photographers, he has led hair for major runway shows, global luxury fashion campaigns, and top-tier editorial titles. A BaBylissPRO Brand Ambassador, Syd’s client list spans leading fashion houses alongside high-profile talent across fashion, film, and music.
“Talent gets you in, attitude keeps you there”

5 STEPS TO BECOMING A SESSION STYLIST:
1
Master the Fundamentals –
Strong cutting, colour, styling, and finishing skills matter. Understand tension, shape, movement, and texture – great session stylists are grounded in technique.
2
Assist, Assist, Assist – Assist creatives you admire. Observe how they work under pressure, collaborate, and navigate the pace of shoots, shows, and campaigns.
3
Build Your Kit – Your kit is your calling card. Keep it organised, packed, and ready. Reliability matters as much as talent.
4
Create Your Network – Session work runs on relationships. Be professional, collaborative, and someone people want back on set.
5
Develop Your Eye – Study fashion, culture, and references. Over time, your point of view sharpens and your signature emerges.
Session styling demands craft, stamina, and obsession – long days, heavy kits, all in service of images that last.
@babylisspro @sydhayeshair

Syd’s favourite product: The NEW BaBylissPRO Drying Wand
The one tool he reaches for to dry faster, refine texture and deliver polished results behind the chair.
5:30am – The day begins. I’m often out before sunrise, loading six permanently packed Burton kit bags and heading across London to a 7am studio call or Q-Cut in Kew.
6:00am – On the road. Shoot dys demand focus, stamina, and flexibility – every job, brief, and team is different.
7:00am – Arrive on set. With the help of my team, Ryan and Miles, the car is unloaded, the station is built, and the room fills with energy as the wider creative team arrives. The brief is discussed, looks are agreed, and the day finds its rhythm.
8:30am – First look. This is where it all comes alive. I build shape, texture, and attitude – whether that’s undone, glossy, punky, grungy, or hyper-minimal.
12:30pm – A quick lunch, usually standing. Shoots don’t pause, and neither do I.
1:00pm – Afternoon changes bring new models, outfits, and direction. Reinvention is what keeps the work exciting.
6:30pm – Sometimes much later –We wrap once the story is captured. Shoots have a life of their own.
Late evening – Clean tools, recharge kits, prep for tomorrow.

★ ALWAYS BE READY: MY KIT STAYS PACKED, CHARGED, AND READY –WHEN THE CALL COMES, YOU GO.
★ BUILD RELATIONSHIPS, NOT EGOS: SESSION WORK RUNS ON TRUST. BE CALM, KIND, AND COLLABORATIVE – TALENT GETS YOU IN, ATTITUDE KEEPS YOU THERE.

Now, leading my own team, nothing brings me greater joy than supporting their ideas and celebrating their achievements.
★ STAY CURIOUS: NEVER ASSUME YOU KNOW IT ALL THERE’S ALWAYS SOMETHING NEW TO LEARN AND A FRESH PERSPECTIVE TO CONSIDER.

Wondering why collagen is everywhere in beauty right now? Here’s how it supports hair health – and what that means for you as a future professional.
Collagen has become a major focus in the beauty and wellness industry, and its benefits go far beyond skincare. As we age, the body’s natural collagen production slows, which can affect hair strength, thickness, and overall condition.
STRONGER HAIR FROM WITHIN
Collagen supports the structure of hair by helping maintain strong follicles and providing nutrients that contribute to healthy growth. When the body has enough collagen, hair is better equipped to grow strong and resilient, helping to reduce breakage and thinning over time.
WHY ABSORPTION COUNTS
How collagen is consumed matters. Liquid collagen is absorbed more quickly than powdered or food-based supplements, allowing

more active ingredients to reach the bloodstream and support hair follicles much faster.
HEALTHY HAIR
Stress, illness, or rapid weight changes can lead to effluvium, resulting in temporary hair shedding. During these times, the body prioritises vital organs and draws nutrients from hair which results in the hair shedding. As hair grows in natural cycles, visible results take time. Supporting this process with Collagen helps encourage stronger, healthier, more resilient hair from root to tip.

• Collagen Drops box • Serum Oil 30ml • Cleanse & Foam Wash 145ml
DEADLINE: 30th March. Winners will be announced on Instagram @concepthairmag in April.
