Land Ethic
Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur U.S. East-West Province
"You will often be able to read in this great book of nature what grandeur there is to be discovered in it. But only those souls can find it who have the happiness of seeing God everywhere!”
-St. Julie Billiart, July 15, 1795

‘‘A Land Ethic expands the definition of community to include not only humans, but all of the other parts of Earth: soil, water , plants, animals, the land… Care for people cannot be separated from care for the land and care for all creatures.’’

Introduction
All of Creation is a manifestation of God’s goodness. By honoring and protecting the land and its inhabitants entrusted to our care, we, as Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, remain faithful to our charism of proclaiming the goodness of God.
"The universe unfolds in God, who fills it completely. Hence, there is a mystical meaning to be found in a leaf, in a mountain trail, in a dewdrop, in a poor person ’ s face. The ideal is not only to pass from the exterior to the interior to discover the action of God in the soul, but also to discover God in all things.”
- Laudato Sí 233
All of us are part of a great Oneness. Let us pray for all of us and for a world where we can all live—plants, animals and human life—in peace and harmony.

Our Beliefs
Earth is a single, sacred community which includes all of its component members, both human and other than human; and Land has its own unique interiority and is not simply something we control.
Care of Earth is participating in God’s ongoing process of creating and sustaining the world.
Earth is a web of relationships that is sustained by living ecosystems; all is interconnected in God’s creation.
The beauty of creation is life-giving for the human spirit, filling it with awe and reverence for the wonders of Earth and all her creatures.
Through this Land Ethic, we acknowledge our responsibility to balance our congregational needs with those of the entire Earth community, now and into the future.
Our Commitments
As we continue to deepen our understanding and responsibility in making collective decisions regarding the lands entrusted to our care, we commit ourselves to the following:
1 2
To preserve in the present and in the future the integrity, sustainability and beauty of the lands entrusted to our care.
To be guided by economic, political, scientific, religious and ethical principles that promote reverence and justice for all Earth's bioregions as we make decisions regarding our lands.
3
4 5 6
To ensure that our decision-making processes include research and planning that focus as much on the future good of the land and the people as they do on the present.
To evaluate all decisions about our lands and resources in light of our commitment to promote the interconnectedness and integrity of all of God's creation.
To ensure that we will leave our lands for future generations to be used in a way that reflects the Notre Dame de Namur mission and heritage.
To educate ourselves, our associates and our partners in ministry regarding the bioregions in which we live, and to be well-informed about modern sciences that will enrich our beliefs and perspectives.
