KYRENIA
A picturesque port with a population of just 22,000, Kyrenia is the most popular tourist destination in North Cyprus. A Venetian harbour town in the past, it is backed by the dramatic, wooded hills of the Besparmak Mountains and the castle that guards the harbour. A short drive east of Kyrenia, nestling in the foothills of the mountains, is the village of Bellapais. It is here that one of the most beautiful and serene ancient sites on the island can be found. The Gothic Abbey of Bellapais has stood on a rocky promontory since the 12th century and, apart from the ravages wrought by time and man, has changed very little. To the east and west of Kyrenia, there are some of the finest beaches for sand lovers. Some are well-developed, cosmopolitan venues with good restaurants and water sports, while others are more peaceful and remote. Kyrenia is surrounded by beautiful nature, making it ideal for walking and cycling trips.
ISKELE
Iskele is where the roads from Famagusta and Ercan come together on the way to Karpasia. It is well known for its coastline, where green and blue blend harmoniously. The district was known as Trikomo until 1974 and is still referred to by this name by many people. Following the 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation, the Turkish community of Larnaca migrated from the south to the north and settled along this coastline, after which the region became known as Iskele. As of 1 June, the number of districts in the TRNC increased from three to five and Iskele was declared a district. There are 43 accommodation units in Iskele, and the district has a population of 20,245. The inhabitants earn their living through tourism, civil service, labour, farming, fishing and crafts. Iskele is especially popular for its golden beaches. Long Beach is one of the most visited beaches in Cyprus, stretching kilometre after kilometre along the coast.
FAMAGUSTA
Located on the east coast of North Cyprus, Famagusta is known for its well preserved 15th and 16th century Venetian walls surrounding the old city. There are many medieval and Renaissance buildings to visit, most of which were damaged during the Turkish siege of the city in 1571, yet still retain their historic character.
When strolling around the old town, one can find something of interest on almost every corner, including ancient churches, mosques, city gate and traditional streets lined with cafés and small shops. Notable landmarks such as the Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque, originally built as St. Nicholas Cathedral, reflect the city’s rich and layered history.
The southern part of the modern city, internationally known as Varosha, has been closed to the public following the international division in the last century.
