THE WORSHIP OF GOD

March 8, 2026 · 11:00 AM

The Third Sunday in Lent

CHIMING OF THE HOUR

WELCOME TO WORSHIPERS....................................................................... Dr. Chris George Senior Pastor

ORGAN PRELUDE

Prelude and Chorale on “Ah, Holy Jesus”.............................Michael Burkhardt

OPENING LITANY ...................................................................... ....Rev. M itzi Ethridge-Cantrell Pastoral Care Associate

Let us worship God, Who has done great things.

We rejoice in our God, Who made a way through the desert of this world.

Let us worship God, Who has caused streams of mercy to flow in the wasteland.

We are the people God has formed through Christ; we worship Him, we rejoice!

Let us worship God in spirit and in truth.

We praise God for the grace that has saved us. Hallelujah! We rejoice!

†PROCESSIONAL HYMN 188

“Man of Sorrows!” What a Name..................................HALLELUJAH! WHAT A SAVIOR

LIGHTING OF THE CANDLES AND OPENING OF THE BIBLE

RESPOSIVE READING..................................................................

Let us remember Jesus, Who, though rich, became poor and dwelt among us; Who was mighty indeed, healing the sick and the troubled; Who, as a teacher to His disciples, was their companion and servant.

May we ever be grateful for Jesus the Christ and what He has done for us.

Let us remember Jesus, Who prayed for the forgiveness of those who rejected Him and for the perfecting of those who received Him; Who loved all people and prayed for them, even if they denied and rejected Him; Who hated sin because He knew the cost of pride and selfishness, of cruelty and hatred, both to people and to God.

May we ever be grateful for Jesus the Christ and what He has done for us.

Let us remember Jesus, Who humbled himself, obedient unto the cross. God has exalted Him who has redeemed us from the bondage of sin and given us new freedom.

May we ever be grateful for Jesus the Christ and what He has done for us and continues to do for us.

LENTEN

CHORAL MUSIC Thy Will Be Done

Based on Matthew 26:36 -42

.Craig Courtney

Our cup was filled with darkness. Our cup was filled with death. Christ took our cup and drank it, and gave us life, and gave us hope, gave us Himself.

My Father, let this cup pass from me. My Father let this cup pass from me; yet not my will O Lord, yet not my will, O Lord, but Thine be done.

In blackest night we hear Him in dark Gethsemane.

Pleading with the Father for one more way, for one more hope, for one more day.

My Father, let this cup pass from me. My Father, let this cup pass from me. Yet not my will, O Lord, yet not my will, O Lord. but Thine be done.

Then they took our Savior and led Him to a tree; and there they broke his body, poured out His life, put Him to death to rise again!

My Father, let this cup pass from me. My Father, let this cup pass from me. Yet not my will, O Lord, yet not my will, O Lord, but Thine be done.

PASTORAL PRAYER WITH OUR LORD’S PRAYER............................................Rev. McNiel

Our Father Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory forever. Amen

ASSURANCE OF PARDON................................................................................... Rev. McNiel

Grace Greater Than Our Sin..............................................

NEW TESTAMENT READING

Matthew 26:6-13.........................................................

Rev. Rebecca Caswell-Speight Minister of Families and Faith Formation

6Now while Jesus was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, 7a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very costly ointment, and she poured it on his head as he sat at the table. 8But when the disciples saw it, they were angry and said, “Why this waste? 9For this ointment could have been sold for a large sum, and the money given to the poor.” 10But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why do you trouble the woman? She has performed a good service for me. 11For you always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me. 12By pouring this ointment on my body she has prepared me for burial. 13Truly I tell you, wherever this good news is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told in remembrance of her.”

For the word of God in scripture, for the word of God among us, for the word of God within us, Thanks be to God!

When our hearts are weary and the chaos of our world feels overwhelming, help us to be a people of prayer.

When days feel too long and darkness comes quickly, help us to be a people of prayer.

When the path is unclear and our steps are unsteady, help us to be a people of prayer.

In you, we find our refuge and strength as a people of prayer.

In you, hearts awakened and hope restored, as a people of prayer.
