WELCOME In today’s Mass we have tried to incorporate some important moments in the school s 150 year history. The opening hymn sets the tone that in all things, and in all places, God is given praise and glory. The First 5eading highlights the Daughters of Mary and Joseph’s inspired decision to travel across the Channel from Belgium on a mission to England. They came to Croydon and set up Coloma School. From there they expanded in England and subsequently to Ireland, USA and Africa. We have a close association with our sister school, Coloma Uganda. 7KH 6HFRQG 5HDGLQJ IURP WKH OHWWHU RI 6W 3HWHU FDOOV WR DOO RI XV VWDII DQG pupils, to care for each other with mutual respect by listening and trusting in God. The Gospel picks up the original motto of the school “7empore 6ilvamâ€? – in time a forest; that through the work of education seeds are sown with the hope that they will bear fruit in the future. 7KH ZRUGV Ćš&RORPD &RPPXQLW\Ć› LV XVHG IUHTXHQWO\ DPRQJ VWDÇœ DQG VWXGHQWV We actively seek to uphold this idea of community in our daily interactions at Coloma. 17th June:ɐReverend Mother Cecilia, Madame Adelaide and Sister Regine, from the Daughters of Mary and Joseph, arrive in Croydon. 2nd August: A school is started in Poplar Villa, Wellesley Road, Croydon, with one pupil.

Coloma moves from Tavistock Road to our current site in Shirley.
The school moves to Tavistock Road and is named "Coloma". The name owes its origins to the Spanish Count of Santa Coloma, former owner of the Daughters of Mary and Joseph's property in Malines in Belgium, which is named after his estate in Spain.

Coloma ceases to be a boarding school and attains Voluntary Aided Status.

Coloma is recognised as a centre for Science and Arts Examinations, and for the Oxford Local Examinations in 1901, the first qualifications open to young women. Throughout the early 1900s the school continued to grow. By 1939 there were 460 pupils in total at the school, including 130 in the Preparatory Department. The House system, named after six female saints, was started around this time, each House involved in competitions, fundraising, bazaars and fetes. Much of the historical research in this timeline was carried out by Erica Fitzpatrick for Coloma's 140th Anniversary

Bombings continue as the school returns to Croydon. In 1944, at the 75th Anniversary of the foundation of Coloma, “practically every window in the building was shattered” during the celebration of the Mass of the Feast of the Sacred Heart. (Miraculously, there were no casualties).

As the Second World War breaks out, 300 pupils are evacuated to Eastbourne, and then to Llandeilo in South Wales.

The school expands to 5-form entry and the Sixth Form Centre is opened. In keeping with the expansion to 5-form entry and the attainment of Specialist Status for Music, Science and Sport, a new Performing Arts Centre was opened, along with the Jubilee Centre and a 3G all-weather football pitch.

Coloma attains the World Class Schools quality mark.

Coloma celebrates its 150th Anniversary! Today, academic results place Coloma at the top of national league tables. The results of the 2018 GCSE cohort placed the school as the top all-girls Catholic comprehensive school in the country (The Sunday Times league tables) and the Sixth Form is consistently placed in the top 5% nationally for student progress by ALPS. According to The Good Schools Guide, "the rich mix of academic opportunities in curriculum subjects which creates this success is balanced by the school's highly regarded caring ethos. The strength of the pastoral care means not only that every pupil matters, but that the pupils extend their concern to others who are in any kind of need."

School Prayer to music Music is not only fundamental to our faith but has also become part of the heart of the school. Music and singing in particular have provided many of our students with skills and PHPRULHV WKDW ZLOO VWD\ ZLWK WKHP IRUHYHU ,W WKHUHIRUH IHOW ǃWWLQJ WKDW WKH VFKRRO FHOHEUDWH this tradition for the 150th anniversary. Generations of Coloma girls will still to this day remember the prayer that has been said at the start of every lesson. In order to give an opportunity for our students to create a legacy to mark the 150th anniversary, a competition was launched where girls were invited to set the words of the school prayer to music. 6XEPLVVLRQV IURP JLUOV RI DOO DJHV ZHUH UHFHLYHG ZLWK PDQ\ WKDW ZRXOG EH ILWWLQJ WR PDUN the occasion. In the end two VXEPLVVLRQV were deemed best so the music department split the prayers and combined them. In an age of increasing anxiety amongst young people, it seemed appropriate that our response to Coloma’s anniversary should be to encourage our students to write odes, a poetical form which focuses on being grateful for something or someone. World Class School In July 2019, Coloma was re-accredited as World Class, as part of the WCSQM inaugural re-accreditation programme. In comparison to the national inspection regime, WCSQM assesses the students not the school, and World Class Schools have to re-accredit every two years, to retain their status. The assessment is therefore up to date, and relies on current, fresh, and robust evidence. Coloma is therefore recognised as a school WKDW supports their students to develop into World Class young people year on year, over a sustained period of time. The re-accreditation process was challenging. In order to qualify for reDFFUHGLWDWLRQ &RORPD KDG WR UHWDLQ WKHLU ĆšRXWVWDQGLQJĆ› 2IVWHG MXGJHPHQW In addition, students haG to work collaboratively with a partner World Class school, to prove to their partner students how their own school has supported them to retain their World Class credentials. The assessment framework is composed of skills and competencies that students need, to be World Class citizens in a dynamic global economy. Through working in partnerships, students developed their networking skills and become part of a World Class student alumnDH association which will provide them with supportive, professional and potentially enduring relationships.
