Wish you were here

Zelda was bored. It was a hot day in August. She was still on summer break and nothing, absolutely nothing, had happened all summer.
But all that was about to change. Zeldaâs friends were finally back home. They were supposed to come over soon and she couldnât wait to see her friends again.

âI hope they will be here soonâ, she said to her stuffed cat, Gizmo, that was lying on her bed.
She walked outside. Perhaps her friends were on their way? But when she stepped into the garden, she couldnât see them anywhere.
âOkayâ, she said to herself.
âI guess Iâll check the post box while I waitâ.
Zelda opened the post box. It was empty, except for a very small letter. She pulled it out. The letter was for her!
But who was it from? There was no return address on the envelope, and she didnât recognise the handwriting.

The letter looked like it had travelled a long way. There were many stamps on it, and the envelope had little stains next to Zeldaâs name.

Zelda held up the letter to her nose and sniffed. She thought she could smell saltwater and coconuts.

She opened the envelope. There was a photograph inside, of a girl standing on a tropical beach. The photo looked like it was taken on holiday. The sand on the beach was white, with tall palm trees sticking up everywhere. The water was a lovely blue colour.
Are those coconut trees? Zelda thought. Well, they must be.
But who was the girl? Zelda looked closely. The girl was about her age. She wore denim shorts and a purple tÂshirt. She didnât have shoes on, and her black hair was big and curly, just like Zeldaâs.
In fact, the girl looked like Zelda. She could almost be Zeldaâs twin. Zelda sometimes wished that she had a twin. Someone to share stuff with.
What if Zelda had found her twin?

Slowly, Zelda turned the photograph over. There was something written on the back of the photo.
The message was short. It said:
Wish you were here.

Zelda stared at the photo in her hand. Who was the girl in the picture? And why did she look like Zelda?
Zelda thought of her dadâs family in the Caribbean. They lived on the island of Tobago. Zelda had never met them. Her dad never wanted them to talk about his family.
Sometimes Zelda felt like her dadâs family had some kind of dark, terrible secret.

Suddenly, Zelda heard laughter across the street. Seconds later, Liam, Sam, and Matilda were walking into her garden.
âThere you are!â Zelda shouted.
Her friends smiled and hugged her. But there was something new about Liam.
âLiam! What happened?â Zelda pointed at Liamâs arm.
âI hurt myself playing footballâ, said Liam. âIâve had this stupid cast on the whole summer. Itâs coming off tomorrow. Canât wait.â
âSo, what have the two of you been up to?â Sam asked the twins.
âWeâve been staying with our aunt and uncle in the UKâ, Matilda said. âAnd Liamâs been reading all summer.â suddenly plötsligt hugged kramade hurt skadade cast gips been up to hittat pĂ„

âIâve read some really cool horror books by a guy called J.Z. Shiversâ, said Liam.
âTheyâre super scary! Youâd like them, Zelda.â
âCoolâ, Zelda said. But she couldnât stop thinking about the letter.

âZelda? Are you okay? Whatâs that in your hand?â Matilda said.
âOhâ, said Zelda. âI just got this letter, but I donât know who itâs from. It doesnât say anything, except for Wish you were here.â
Matilda stared at the photo and said: âShe sort of looks like you, you know. Maybe sheâs a relative or something.

I bet your dad knows who the girl in the picture is. Letâs go talk to him!â
Zelda hesitated. âDad doesnât like to be disturbed when heâs workingâ

Zeldaâs dad was working right now. They could hear him typing inside the study. Zelda didnât really know much about her dadâs job. He worked from home, but he never talked about his job.
âBut your dad is always so nice!â said Matilda. âIâm sure he wonât mind.â
They were standing outside her dadâs study. Before Zelda could say anything, Liam knocked on the door. typing skriver, knappar nice trevlig wonât mind har inget emot study arbetsrum knocked knackade

Is this the right place?

A few hours later, Zelda and her friends were having pizza in Zeldaâs room. The pizza was hot, salty and delicious. Everyone found their favourite.
When they were finished everyone was lying down, absolutely stuffed.

âI think so âŠâ said Zelda.
They were heading away from the beach now, towards the forest next to it.
They landed inside a tropical forest. The sun was almost gone now, and the sky was dark blue. That trickling sound they had heard back in Zeldaâs bedroom was everywhere: there must be a waterfall nearby, she thought.

They ran down the beach.

âSheâs wearing a hoodie!â Liam whispered.

âHey! What have you done to Zelda?â Liam asked. âWhy did you kidnap her?â
Anya laughed. âKidnap! Youâre a bit dramatic, arenât you? I just wanted to talk to my cousin. Iâm Anya, and Zeldaâs my cousin. Iâve wanted to meet her for ages. Thatâs why I sent the letter.â

Anya smiled. âThereâs a party on the beach! Letâs go and check it out!â
Zelda and her friends followed her and joined the party. Soon, they were standing next to the band.
