Zelda’s Adventure

Wish you were here

Zelda was bored. It was a hot day in August. She was still on summer break and nothing, absolutely nothing, had happened all summer.

But all that was about to change. Zelda’s friends were finally back home. They were supposed to come over soon and she couldn’t wait to see her friends again.

‘I hope they will be here soon’, she said to her stuffed cat, Gizmo, that was lying on her bed.

She walked outside. Perhaps her friends were on their way? But when she stepped into the garden, she couldn’t see them anywhere.

‘Okay’, she said to herself.

‘I guess I’ll check the post box while I wait’.

Zelda opened the post box. It was empty, except for a very small letter. She pulled it out. The letter was for her!

But who was it from? There was no return address on the envelope, and she didn’t recognise the handwriting.

The letter looked like it had travelled a long way. There were many stamps on it, and the envelope had little stains next to Zelda’s name.

Zelda held up the letter to her nose and sniffed. She thought she could smell saltwater and coconuts.

She opened the envelope. There was a photograph inside, of a girl standing on a tropical beach. The photo looked like it was taken on holiday. The sand on the beach was white, with tall palm trees sticking up everywhere. The water was a lovely blue colour.

Are those coconut trees? Zelda thought. Well, they must be.

But who was the girl? Zelda looked closely. The girl was about her age. She wore denim shorts and a purple tshirt. She didn’t have shoes on, and her black hair was big and curly, just like Zelda’s.

In fact, the girl looked like Zelda. She could almost be Zelda’s twin. Zelda sometimes wished that she had a twin. Someone to share stuff with.

What if Zelda had found her twin?

Slowly, Zelda turned the photograph over. There was something written on the back of the photo.

The message was short. It said:

Wish you were here.

Who’s that girl?

Zelda stared at the photo in her hand. Who was the girl in the picture? And why did she look like Zelda?

Zelda thought of her dad’s family in the Caribbean. They lived on the island of Tobago. Zelda had never met them. Her dad never wanted them to talk about his family.

Sometimes Zelda felt like her dad’s family had some kind of dark, terrible secret.

Suddenly, Zelda heard laughter across the street. Seconds later, Liam, Sam, and Matilda were walking into her garden.

‘There you are!’ Zelda shouted.

Her friends smiled and hugged her. But there was something new about Liam.

‘Liam! What happened?’ Zelda pointed at Liam’s arm.

‘I hurt myself playing football’, said Liam. ‘I’ve had this stupid cast on the whole summer. It’s coming off tomorrow. Can’t wait.’

‘So, what have the two of you been up to?’ Sam asked the twins.

‘We’ve been staying with our aunt and uncle in the UK’, Matilda said. ‘And Liam’s been reading all summer.’ suddenly plötsligt hugged kramade hurt skadade cast gips been up to hittat pĂ„

‘I’ve read some really cool horror books by a guy called J.Z. Shivers’, said Liam.

‘They’re super scary! You’d like them, Zelda.’

‘Cool’, Zelda said. But she couldn’t stop thinking about the letter.

‘Zelda? Are you okay? What’s that in your hand?’ Matilda said.

‘Oh’, said Zelda. ‘I just got this letter, but I don’t know who it’s from. It doesn’t say anything, except for Wish you were here.’

Matilda stared at the photo and said: ‘She sort of looks like you, you know. Maybe she’s a relative or something.

I bet your dad knows who the girl in the picture is. Let’s go talk to him!’

Zelda hesitated. ‘Dad doesn’t like to be disturbed when he’s working’

Zelda’s dad was working right now. They could hear him typing inside the study. Zelda didn’t really know much about her dad’s job. He worked from home, but he never talked about his job.

‘But your dad is always so nice!’ said Matilda. ‘I’m sure he won’t mind.’

They were standing outside her dad’s study. Before Zelda could say anything, Liam knocked on the door. typing skriver, knappar nice trevlig won’t mind har inget emot study arbetsrum knocked knackade

Pizza and coconuts

A few hours later, Zelda and her friends were having pizza in Zelda’s room. The pizza was hot, salty and delicious. Everyone found their favourite.

When they were finished everyone was lying down, absolutely stuffed.

‘I think so
’ said Zelda.

They were heading away from the beach now, towards the forest next to it.

They landed inside a tropical forest. The sun was almost gone now, and the sky was dark blue. That trickling sound they had heard back in Zelda’s bedroom was everywhere: there must be a waterfall nearby, she thought.

‘Monkeys!’ said Liam.

‘I know where that is, we saw those huts when we got here!’ Matilda said to her friends.

They ran down the beach.

‘She’s wearing a hoodie!’ Liam whispered.

‘She’s the girl from the photo!’ said Matilda.

‘Hey! What have you done to Zelda?’ Liam asked. ‘Why did you kidnap her?’

Anya laughed. ‘Kidnap! You’re a bit dramatic, aren’t you? I just wanted to talk to my cousin. I’m Anya, and Zelda’s my cousin. I’ve wanted to meet her for ages. That’s why I sent the letter.’

Further down on the beach, she could see big, orange flames from a bonfire. There was music in the air, too.

Anya smiled. ‘There’s a party on the beach! Let’s go and check it out!’

Zelda and her friends followed her and joined the party. Soon, they were standing next to the band.

The next morning, the children sat on the beach having breakfast. Anya had brought bread, cheese, fruit, and a big bottle of orange juice.
