The worm farm

“Good afternoon, class. Stand in a straight line, please!”

Mr. Bell shouts. “Let’s go to the Green Corner!”

The children love visiting the school garden, so they run off quickly. There are chickens, beehives, a wonderful flower garden – and, best of all, there is a huge worm farm.

Mr. Bell is a teacher with a white, round head and not much hair. It is a hot day and the top of his head is pink. Very pink. He looks a bit like an upside-down triangle: wide at the top and narrow at the bottom. It is not easy looking after twenty schoolchildren full of energy. Well, it is twenty-one children
but no one notices the small boy with long, mousy brown hair. The boy is small and thin – but he is strong. He is very shy. He is new at school and does not have any friends.

Let’s go to the Green Corner!

The Green Corner

Who are you?

When Mr. Bell arrives at the garden, he sees children running everywhere. The chickens are out in the garden. Mr. Bell takes a deep breath and shouts. “Catch the chickens now! We don’t want them to eat the worms in our worm farm.”

The children run after the mother hen and her babies. “Shoo!” they shout.

As usual, the boy is on his own. He walks over to the worm farm and looks through the glass. “Do worms have families?” he wonders.

He picks up a worm. It is cold and slimy. Then he licks it with his tongue.

“Look – it’s the new kid! He likes licking worms!” Ali says. “Awesome!”

Everyone stares at the boy.

“You’re cool!” Ali says. “But who are you?”
