Today we continue to journey through this sacred season together, focusing on our theme of Covenant. This Sunday, we will Re focus on the fifth and final promise , v. D a ir a t r. C we make in our baptismal covenant: hristopher D. G Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being? This is indeed a powerful way to prepare to shift into Holy Week (more on that below). In this final week of Lent, I hope you continue to connect with us through all our Lenten offerings. I receive notes almost daily from members and non-members alike who get so much out of our weekday podcast series with meditations from our clergy, as well as participating with our Lent kits. As a reminder, please share images of your home altars with us by sending them to info@saintmichael.org or tag us online using #myhomealtar and continue working on our special Lenten service project. Next week, we will celebrate Palm Sunday and the start of Holy Week. Please visit our Holy Week page to make a plan for how you will celebrate this special week, noting which services will be in-person and which services will be online only. Note that we will be holding a special Journey to Easter offering on Easter Sunday from 1:30-3 p.m. This will be an opportunity for all of you to walk through the church, receive communion and an Easter blessing, and have free professional portraits made outside the red chapel doors! In addition to worship, there are many ways you can support our celebration of Easter, including Easter flowers in honor or memory of loved ones and our Easter plate, given away in total to help the most vulnerable in our community. The generosity of our community is always on display during these big festival services, and this year will be no different.

LENTEN SERVICE PROJECT This Lent, we are keeping the unhoused in prayer as we seek to provide for their needs. While 250 unhoused men and women live at Austin Street Center during the pandemic, there is some good news: 3-5 people per week are moving into new residences. We are assembling housewarming baskets for these men and women to welcome them to their new homes!
Participate with us in remembering all who Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church For more information on all of our Lenten opportunities, please visit saintmichael.org/lent. need safe residence by praying for the ones who will receive these items and by collecting the items on the Lenten Calendar. On Easter Sunday, please bring the collected items in a laundry basket to the West Lot before the 6:30 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. services. We will deliver them!
IN-PERSON WORSHIP: A limited number of people may attend public worship services. Maskwearing and social distancing are still required on the Saint Michael campus. Registration for in-person worship services begins online each Monday at 10 AM CT, and tickets can be reserved at saintmichael.org/ worshiptickets. Although we have returned to in-person worship on most Sunday mornings, we will not have in-person attendance in the morning on March 28 and April 4. However, in-person attendance will be permitted at outdoor services on Palm Sunday afternoon, Easter early morning, and Easter afternoon. Registered attendees now enter through the Saint Michael Episcopal School (SMES) Porte Cochère in the West parking lot due to upcoming construction on the North side of the campus. Health safety guidelines for those coming onto the campus may be found at saintmichael.org/ worshiptickets. VISITORS DURING THE WEEK should enter through the south entrance. Please schedule your group in advance with Tish Visinsky. WEDDINGS, FUNERALS, AND BAPTISMS are permitted outdoors in unlimited numbers, as long as households are distanced and masked. Based on a hymn sung in Bach’s time which paraphrases the great penitential Psalm 50 (“Have mercy on me, O God”), this chorale-prelude shows Bach’s sensitive approach to harmony at its finest. The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. In today’s anthem, Attwood sets the Psalmist’s plea for mercy. Listen for large leaps at the text “Cast me not away” followed by a more linear melody at “away from Thy presence.” The intensity and discomfort in the large leaps of the melody is replaced with solace and peace when it is followed by a more simple, linear melody.

This selection from between the two World Wars sets the stage for the drama of Holy Week next week. Long phrases and a tremendous crescendo evoke almost a sense of inevitable doom. A more poignant, rhetorical section follows. Perhaps like the eye of the storm, this section is filled with a sense of hope and longing, yet eventually gives way to a return of the dark, opening material. In this tough time of the pandemic, many people have found solace and peace in nature. In the midst of the wobbling polar vortex that brought suffering to Texas, we noticed our dependence on resources for life and comfort. What is a faithful response to both our love for and fear of nature? This course will bring together wisdom from our Christian tradition and current knowledge to address how we can protect the earth and preserve ourselves and our fellow creatures. We invite people to join in reading and discussing To Serve and Guard the Earth by Beth Botarski as a way to explore faithful responses to our situation. Instead of listening to a lecture, people will be invited to engage in group discussion, which Dr. Elizabeth Lang will facilitate. Who is the Holy Spirit? How can we unleash the power of the Holy Spirit in our lives? The Prayer Ministry Book Study will examine these questions by delving into the Rev. Billy Graham’s insightful book, “The Holy Spirit: Activating God’s Power in Your life.” With prayerful reverence and focused wisdom, Dr. Graham puts an understandable face on this mysterious third Person of the Trinity and reminds us that God’s power is available through the Holy Spirit. IN-PERSON WORSHIP (LIMITED SEATS AVAILABLE) We extend a warm welcome to all those who are attending worship services in person! Here are a few guidelines that will make your time with us safer and more enjoyable. In-person worship is available every Sunday at 9 AM CT (Traditional) and 11 AM CT (Contemporary). Reserve 1 ticket per person (up to 5), beginning at 10 AM CT every Monday: saintmichael.org/ worshiptickets. Consecrated wafers are available during the Distribution of Communion at 12:15 p.m. Although we have returned to in-person worship on most Sunday mornings, we will not have inperson attendance in the morning on March 28 and April 4. However, in-person attendance will be permitted at outdoor services on Palm Sunday afternoon, Easter early morning, and Easter afternoon. Livestreams and video recordings of our weekly services continue to be the way that most people participate in worship. Visit saintmichael.org/live to tune in. WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW: While state guidelines may be changing, diocesan guidelines remain the same: •

Maintain at least six feet distance from everyone not living in your household

No shaking hands, hugs, or any physical contact with people outside your household

No physical passing of the peace (although eye contact and a wave is encouraged)
•
No congregational singing (unless outdoors)No passing of the offering plate (you may give as you leave or online at saintmichael.org/give)

Leave the building immediately after worship ends and socialize outdoors
