During our 9 a.m. service, we will celebrate this special season with our annual Children’s Nativity Pageant. Typically, our pageant features a large cast of our beautiful children dressed as animals, stars, shepherds, and more. Due to the pandemic, we had to reimagine the pageant as a much more intimate experience. I am grateful to our Saint Michael Choristers for putting in so much extra time to share this sacred story with us. I believe the pageant will be a gift to us all, so don’t miss it!

In addition to the pageant, we continue our contemporary Advent sermon series Rediscover Christmas at 11 a.m. and end the evening with Choral Compline at 8 p.m. Today is the final in-person Compline service of 2020. Compline will return Sunday, January 10, but online only. As always, there are many opportunities to give during this season. You can still participate in our Christmas service programs by supporting Heart of Giving, donating to our Christmas Flower Memorials, and giving to our Christmas Plate Offering, which goes directly to local, national, and international organizations each year. SAFE GATHERINGS CONTINUE: A limited number of people may attend livestream worship on Sunday at 9 AM CST (Traditional), 11 AM CST (Contemporary), and 8 PM CST (Compline). Attendees must be symptom-free, remain distanced from other households, and wear a mask at all times. Entrance is from the north entrance and includes a brief screening. At Communion services, consecrated wafers will be distributed as people enter the sanctuary and may be consumed individually at the end of the Eucharistic Prayer. Free tickets for the three Sunday services are available on a first-come, firstserved basis on Monday at 10 a.m. at saintmichael.org/worshiptickets. Distribution of Holy Communion is held on Sunday from 12:15 p.m. - 1 p.m. and no longer requires a ticket (west entrance). Note: If Highland Park Public Schools return to online-only instruction, we must discontinue attendance at livestream worship and restrict the number of people entering the building.

Our cast and crew took the pageant out into God's creation and recorded the pageant in Celina at the gracious offering of the Liles and CanďŹ eld families. In this “verse anthem” setting of today’s Epistle, the vital text “Rejoice in the Lord alway, and again I say rejoice” is sung repeatedly by the full choir, in alternation with verses by soloists. This Advent season, we introduce a new, rather extroverted setting of the Sanctus. 20th-century Welsh composer William Mathias is particularly important to Saint Michael because he has previously been commissioned by Saint Michael to write new choral music premiered by our choir. Notice the music’s growing excitement at “heaven and earth…” leading up to a “Hosanna in the highest.” Note, too, that the music repeats itself starting at “Blessed is he…” Kneeling

The Third Sunday of Advent is sometimes called “Gaudete” – Rejoice! – Sunday, after the first word of its ancient Introit, a text we heard in today’s offertory anthem. It is a day to be assured that the Lord is coming soon – and to anticipate the joy of Christmas. This chipper fugue, in the rhythm of a jig, brings us happily on our way to Christmas. The foregoing text of the worship service contained in this order of worship is taken from the Book of Common Prayer 1979. The Book of Common Prayer alone is of authority in the worship of the Episcopal Church. This program is provided for convenience of use on this occasion.
