I pray that the first week of Advent has been a welcome gift in your life. As we begin the second week of this holy season, Re I want to remind you of the ways , v. D ata r in which we are supporting your i r. C hristopher D. G discipleship journey. We have sermons series in both Sunday morning services: Hope Series at 9 a.m. and Rediscover Christmas at 11 a.m. In addition to our Sunday sermons, we have a new season of our weekday podcasts grounded in our Advent theme of Hope, as well as daily meditations from members of our Saint Michael community. Each of these offerings are meant to be companions to you on your Advent journey as we prepare for the beauty of Christmas. As always, Saint Michael is committed to serving our neighbors and community. So far this season, we have collected presents for more than 300 children and financial gifts of more than $25,000 for I Believe In Angels, our Christmas partnership with Jubilee Park. You can still participate in our Christmas service programs by supporting Heart of Giving, donating to our Christmas Flower Memorials, and giving to our Christmas Plate Offering, which goes directly to local, national, and international organizations each year. Finally, I want to encourage you to learn about our Christmas worship opportunities. Our services begin on Sunday, December 20 with Christmas Lessons & Carols, and continue with five beautiful liturgies on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. This year, we have a very special opportunity to be in our church at Christmas to receive communion, a blessing, and even take a professional portrait on December 23 we are calling Journey to Christmas. This new offering will be a safe, sacred way to celebrate with your Saint Michael family in person before we celebrate together online. May you be blessed this Advent season!

SAFE GATHERINGS CONTINUE: A limited number of people may attend livestream worship on Sunday at 9:00 A.M. (Traditional), 11:00 A.M. (Contemporary), and 8:00 P.M. (Compline). Attendees must be symptom-free, remain distanced from other households, and wear a mask at all times. Entrance is from the north side of the building and includes a brief screening. At Communion services, consecrated wafers will be distributed as people enter the sanctuary and may be consumed individually at the end of the Eucharistic Prayer. Free tickets for the three Sunday services are available on a first-come, first-served basis on Monday at 10:00 A.M. at saintmichael.org/ worshiptickets. Distribution of Holy Communion is held on Sunday at 12:15 P.M. - 1:00 P.M. and no longer requires a ticket (west entrance). The Lutheran chorale “Wachet auf” opens with the following text: “Awake, calls the voice to us of the watchmen high up in the tower; awake, you city of Jerusalem.” Advent is a season of watching and waiting for the birth of our Lord. In this chorale prelude, Bach sets the hymn tune as the middle voice of an elegant trio. Listen for the long notes of the melody, which stand in stark contrast to the ornate top voice. The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. This Advent season, we introduce a new, rather extroverted setting of the Sanctus. 20th-century Welsh composer William Mathias is particularly important to Saint Michael because he has previously been commissioned by Saint Michael to write new choral music premiered by our choir. Notice the music’s growing excitement at “heaven and earth…” leading up to a “Hosanna in the highest.” Note, too, that the music repeats itself starting at “Blessed is he…” Kneeling

Johannes Brahms
Brahms composed this setting of “Es ist ein Ros entsprungen” near the end of his life, and it was published in a set of eleven chorales in 1902, after he had passed away. The serene nature of Brahms’s composition belies a deep joy and trust in God that mirrors the text of the chorale: “Lo, how a rose e’er blooming from tender stem hath sprung! Of Jesse’s lineage coming, as men of old have sung. It came, a flow’ret bright, amid the cold of winter, when half-spent was the night.”
