It’s been such a gift to have people join us in person on Sundays, and we are taking another important step Re , toward reopening our campus. Given v. D a ir a t r. C the positive progress of the vaccination hristopher D. G efforts in our community, and in light of the new guidance from the CDC, beginning today, we will no longer require reservations for worship, limit room capacity, restrict entrances and exits, and mandate face masks. Although some limits will remain for a time, such as not using the common cup during Communion, this moment is a true gift and I give thanks to God for the thoughtfulness, care, and patience of our community. Over the next few months, we will take measured, intentional steps toward a full return to programs and ministries. As you know, it’s harder to restart than it is to shut down, but our efforts to expand offerings like inperson classes and worship services will continue through the summer. I encourage you to read through the reopening plan on our website that details our efforts. As we near the end of the Easter season, I hope you’ve marked your calendars to join us for our Pentecost celebrations on Sunday, May 23! We will celebrate “the birthday of the Church” with big music and festive liturgies at both the 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. services in the church and an outdoor service at 5:30 p.m. in the west field tent. This will be the first in-person service to welcome back our adult choir, and plan to come early to enjoy a half-hour show from our popular firebreather. It will be a Spirit-filled day! Looking ahead to the summer, our continued reopening will include in-person Sunday Formation classes and the return of the in-person Joy Service with the Joy Band in June! Beginning June 6 and continuing through the summer, the Joy Service will return to the Saint Michael Chapel at 9 a.m., followed by children, youth, and adult classes at 10 a.m. Being back together physically will be a great gift, so stay tuned for more information over the next few weeks.

Holy Eucharist Rite II Messiaen’s full title for this 1934 piece in celebration of Jesus’ Ascension is “Outbursts of joy from a soul before the Glory of Christ, which is the soul’s own glory”. Perhaps the most famous piece in the entire organ repertoire, this final movement from Widor’s Fifth Symphony for organ has long been associated with the Easter season and is often played on Easter Day. This year, the Toccata marks the conclusion, rather than beginning, of the Easter season and is a fitting summation of the 40 days. This piece is given many interpretations, here is one possible interpretation for you to consider: The work opens with high-pitched flourishes which could be thought of as the sparkling energy of creation. The theme which is heard in the pedal represents the providence of God and his acts within creation. The music suddenly disappears, only to crescendo back to full life, while the elephantine bass notes literally shake the church. Ultimately, the piece swirls to its final plagal cadence -- Amen! Hymn permission used by Rite Song, a one-time use reprint license for congregational use un less otherwise noted.. The foregoing text of the worship service contained in this order of worship is taken from the Book of Common Prayer 1979. We invite people to join in reading and discussing To Serve and Guard the Earth by Beth Botarski as a way to explore faithful responses to our situation.
