This month, our community impact project is supporting our neighbors in the St. Philip’s Community. Our annual Coat Drive has made a significant impact through St. Philip’s these past few years, and I encourage you to get involved. We need gently used (or new!) coats of all sizes—including children—to stock their coat closet for winter. Bins to collect coats can be found at Saint Michael, but we need your contributions right away, so don’t delay. Serving the needs of one another both inside and outside our church community is incredibly powerful. We can choose to be agents of Christ—the tools of love and grace—that bring people closer to God. I want you to be part of that work and to put your faith in action. Join us now and make a gift to support the work we share, to commit with faithfulness and courage. We are not given a spirit of fear, but one of power and love. Be part of expanding the power and love of Christ here at Saint Michael and make a financial commitment to share our work today. Next week, our 75th Anniversary celebration continues as we will welcome the Rev. Dr. Bob Dannals as our guest preacher for our All Saints’ Day worship service on Sunday, November 7. Bob will be with us for both traditional services at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. in the church, as well as a festive reception between the services, and I hope you will join us! “There is a land of pure delight” sets luminous poetry by Isaac Watts about the life to come. It paints in vivid colors the joys of life eternal, and reminds us to embrace God’s promises to us: “But timorous mortals start and shrink to cross the narrow sea, and linger shivering on the brink, and fear to launch away.” It is normal to fear death, but we who know God’s promise of everlasting life have nothing to dread. This poetry is a good reminder to us as we approach All Saints Day, and our eternal home.

Called the “Dean of Canadian composers,” Willan finished the monumental work from which our postlude is taken in 1916. The writing of the first two movements is more dramatic than is typical for Willan, likely the result of a challenge from a colleague upon hearing music by then-contemporary maximalist Max Reger. However, the Fugue is more typical Willan as it hearkens to more conservative 19th-century composers such as Mendelssohn or Brahms, until its impassioned conclusion returns to the more intense writing of earlier in the work.

All Saints’ Day & All Souls’ Day
Join us for festive services Sunday, November 7! Our 11 a.m. service will feature Stanford’s animated “Te Deum” as well as “Mass in C Major” by Schubert. At 5:30 p.m., p.m., we will celebrate All Souls’ Day with an Evensong to honor the faithful departed. This service is offered specially for those who have recently lost a loved one, though all are welcome. The choir will sing Howells’ “Gloucester Service,” as well as Harris’ majestic “Bring Us, O Lord God” in this contemplative service, and the Necrology will be read.
