Dear Friends, Today we hear the story of Bartimaeus, a blind man begging on the side of the street. After Bartimaeus calls out to Jesus, Jesus asks him what he wants, and he replies, “let me see again.” Jesus tells him to go on his way because his faith has healed him. This miracle is not only remarkable because of Bartimaeus’s boldness, but also because of the crowd’s important pivot. Although the miraculous healing most often gets top billing in this story, I find it fascinating to consider the shift in the crowd. At first, the crowd tries to silence Bartimaeus when he calls to Jesus. Imagine the gall of a pitiful, blind beggar thinking that Jesus would pay him any attention! Yet he does. Jesus tells the crowd to bring the man to him, and immediately there is a shift. The crowd begins to help Bartimaeus get to Jesus, encouraging the beggar to “take heart.” How quickly the people change at the word of Christ. Our world seems to be in a constant precarious state. Uncertainty surrounds us, and that uncertainty can become fear, and fear can activate our insecurities and our base instincts. The crowd following Jesus was attracted to him, yes, but their attraction was shallow, and the uncertainty of their world activated their fear to kept them on edge. They perceive the beggar as a threat, and when he calls out for mercy, they try to shut him up. But at the word of Jesus, they are reminded that fear does not win. Just like the crowd, we can often find ourselves controlled by fear. We don’t mean to be, but the world can get the best of us. That’s why we need to heed Jesus’s call and hear his command to bring all people into his loving embrace. It’s only in Christ that we can find true healing. What we do as a faith community can be incredibly powerful. Every day, we can choose to be agents of Christ and the tools of grace that bring people closer to God. I

Jeffrey Smith has held several prominent Episcopal church music director positions, including Grace Cathedral, San Francisco and currently at St. Paul’s, K. St. in Washington DC. Today’s anthem was written for the Girls Choir of Christ Church Cathedral in Lexington, KY. It vividly paints a picture of the text, particularly in the middle section at “Yea, the sparrow…” with remnants of bird song in the organ and rhythmic figures perhaps mimicking bird-like movements in the voices. A grand crescendo at “My King and my God” leads to a recap of the opening material, but with the addition of a longing-filled descant hovering above the other two voices. Standing, sung by All

Georg Böhm is an important figure in the history of organ music primarily because he was one of the childhood music teachers of Johann Sebastian Bach. Among other things, Böhm passed along to Bach the stylus phantasticus, a type of composition intended to shock and awe audiences by sudden contrasts and displays of virtuosity. This style is on display from the very beginning of Böhm’s Praeludium in C, which begins with a lengthy and impressive pedal solo that traverses the entire length of the pedalboard. Hymn permission used by Rite Song, a one-time use reprint license for congregational use. The foregoing text of the worship service contained in this order of worship is taken from the Book of Common Prayer 1979. The Book of Common Prayer alone is of authority in the worship of the Episcopal Church. This program is provided for convenience of use on this occasion.

At 5:30 p.m., p.m., we will celebrate All Souls Day with an Evensong to honor the faithful departed. This service is offered specially for those who have recently lost a loved one, though all are welcome. The choir will sing Howells’ “Gloucester Service,” as well as Harris’ majestic “Bring Us, O Lord God” in this contemplative service, and the Necrology will be read.
