Dear Friends, Have you gone on the Journey to Jesus Scavenger Hunt yet? If not, you’re missing out! Over the last two Sundays, hundreds ran around our church campus having some good fun as they played along with our special scavenger hunt. Every Sunday in October, a big Jesus doll will be hidden somewhere on the Saint Michael campus, encouraging children and the young at heart to discover their spiritual gifts and how those gifts can be used here at Saint Michael. Stop by the Stewardship tables in the hallways to get a new clue and join the fun today! In October, we are focusing on the gift of giving. Each week, the clergy will be focusing on giving in sermons, weekday podcasts, and teachings. Unpacking the many ways we are blessed by God encourages us to return thanks by investing in our church. Our shared mission and ministry here at Saint Michael only grows when we all pitch in, so now is your opportunity. As you consider your own annual gift, I hope you will spend time listening and reading the stories from fellow parishioners online and in the back pages of today’s bulletin. Their stories will inspire you to be part of our work. You should have received a stewardship packet in the mail that details the work we’ve shared this year and the plans we have for next year. Please prayerfully consider your gift and then commit with faithfulness and courage. We are only limited by our commitment, so be part of expanding

Florence Price, who lived 1887-1953, is the first AfricanAmerican woman composer to have gained national recognition for her craft. Though initially from Arkansas, she studied at the New England Conservatory of Music and spent most of her career living and working in Chicago. Her Suite No. 1 for Organ, of which today’s prelude is the third movement, was written around 1942. The Air modulates between key areas frequently, moving through beguiling and sentimental harmonies. Its melody is similar, but not identical, to the spiritual song “Let us break bread together on our knees.”
This setting of the hymn tune “I love thee, my Lord” comes from George Shearing’s collection entitled “Sacred Sounds.” Shearing was a well-known jazz pianist in the middle of the twentieth century, and this collection represents his only foray into the world of sacred music. These delightful pieces are full of charming twists and unexpected harmonic shifts.

Born in Lichtenstein, Gabriel Rheinberger spent the majority of his professional life working in Germany. Rheinberger was a prolific composer, with extant works for orchestra, chamber ensembles, and choir, in addition to 20 organ sonatas which remain in the standard repertoire to this day. He was also tremendously influential during the second half of the nineteenth century on several important young American composers who traveled to Germany to study with him. Among these are Horatio Parker and George Whitefield Chadwick, who were among the most prominent American organists and composers of their era.
