Herbert Sumsion
Sumsion ranks as one of the few major English cathedral musicians of the previous century who spent several years in the US. Today’s anthem is one of his best known and was finished in 1979. It vividly paints the text of its Psalm verses. The organ’s accompaniment in particular brings to mind an image of the sea and its current. From a dark and brooding opening in the organ to rambunctious choral echoes at “for at his word the stormy wind ariseth” to a plaintive setting of “their soul melteth away,” the music’s depiction of the Psalm text is colorful and engaging. Litton This fugue, probably written in the middle of Bach’s life, is one of his most beloved and often-played organ fugues. Its subject is unusually long compared with those from other fugues of this composer and this era in general, but has a lyric quality that makes it irresistible. The simplicity and repetitive nature of the fugue subject make it ideal for the composer to experiment with shifting metric accents. As you listen, notice that it sounds like there are sometimes two beats per measure, and sometimes three. This change in meter is not notated in the score, but is instead the aural effect created by clever rhythmic manipulations of the composer. FAQs What does a pledge to Saint Michael and All Angels (SMAA) mean? A pledge to SMAA means that you have stated your intention to fulfill a defined, annual monetary gift that supports the operational budget of the Church.
What does the operational budget of the church support? The operational budget supports all ministry needs of the Church, including Pastoral Care, Worship & Liturgy, Formation, Mission & Outreach, and Administration. The Saint Michael Episcopal School has been previously supported by the Operational budget, yet while still receiving a small amount of support from the Church, they are becoming financially independent.
What percent of the Church’s annual budget is supported by pledges? Ninety percent (90%) of the Church’s annual budget is supported by pledges.

What happens if the state of my finances changes during the year and I am unable to fulfill my pledge? If the state of your finances changes during the year and you are unable to fulfill your pledge, know that we are grateful for your intentions of supporting our ministries. Life happens when we least expect it and as your church we are here for you. Please let us know what you are able to fulfill by calling Caroline Marak or Cheryl Kaschak so we can adjust our budget accordingly. All conversations are confidential and pastoral support is available if you need it.
What if I put money in the offering plate – doesn’t that take the place of a pledge? Putting money in the offering plate is a wonderful spiritual discipline that does not take the place of a pledge. Plate offerings are contributions that we can’t financially plan for in support of our budget. During special Sundays throughout the year, plate offerings support outside Mission & Outreach ministry efforts.
