Our new fall series titled Gifted began last Sunday and will continue through October. Gifted will explore the gifts we’ve received from God and the way we are called to use those gifts. In each of our worship services, the sermons will address the big ways in which our gifts are used through our church community, and you will be invited to consider how you can use your unique gifts in ministry here. The next few months will allow us to deeply consider how we allocate our time, talent, and treasure so that we commit to a path that forms us in our own discipleship. Speaking of gifts, we have an opportunity to use some of our gifts to help our neighbors in need. More than 2,000 people have died and countless more are injured and displaced, and we can be part of the help they need now. Saint Michael has a long connection with the Episcopal Church in Haiti, and through Episcopal Relief and Development, has supported aid there for nearly a

On August 14, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck the southwest portion of Haiti. The earthquake was followed by Tropical Storm Grace on Monday night and much of Tuesday. More than 1 million people, including more than half a million children, have been impacted by the back-to-back disasters, and the death toll is OVER 2,000. Jesus said, “Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them. Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But the one who eats this bread will live forever.” He said these things while he was teaching in the synagogue at Capernaum. When many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This teaching is difficult; who can accept it?” But Jesus, being aware that his disciples were complaining about it, said to them, “Does this offend you? Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. Greater Love is one of the most beloved and popular English cathedral anthems from the previous century, and for good reason. Not only does its text outline so much of the Christian life, its music, ranging from soaring melodies to inspiring modulations to heart-felt dissonances, depicts the text in ways that are as gratifying as they are artistically masterful. “Who his own self…” is given to two soloists before the choir enters to crescendo to choral fanfares at “ye are washed, ye are sanctified…” which ultimately climax at “marvellous light.” The anthem’s most poignant writing is reserved for St. Paul’s charge that concludes the anthem.
