Opening one’s social media feed these days can feel like entering a war zone. Listening to the news can feel like an indoctrination session. Even our families are being divided. How do we respond in faith? I think the prayer above points the way forward. We are bound together in a common life. The love we show, or the hatred we espouse, will ultimately come back to us. Loving our neighbors as ourselves isn’t just the right thing to do, it’s the smart thing to do. We reap what we sow.

At the same time, we continually struggle for justice and truth. That’s not optional in the kingdom of God. Recently, Chris, our Rector, co-signed a letter with other senior ministers in the area condemning racism as incompatible with the gospel of Jesus Christ. There are times to take a stand. Yet even as we confront one another, we do so without hatred or bitterness. This is where we’re falling down lately. It’s not enough to disagree with someone, we must destroy them entirely. This impulse is not from God and will not yield the redeemed community that God intends. Conflict can be holy if Love is at the center. Before you respond to the next Facebook post, or interrupt someone across the dinner table, remember that the one you oppose so vehemently may bear a gift you desperately need. In Christ,

When the man saw that he did not prevail against Jacob, he struck him on the hip socket; and Jacob’s hip was put out of joint as he wrestled with him. Then he said, “Let me go, for the day is breaking.” But Jacob said, “I will not let you go, unless you bless me.” So he said to him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Jacob.” Then the man said, “You shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with humans, and have prevailed.” Then Jacob asked him, “Please tell me your name.” But he said, “Why is it that you ask my name?” And there he blessed him. Jesus withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. When he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them and cured their sick. We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.
