Life is short, and we have too little time to gladden the hearts of those who walk the Re v. K ce way with us, so be swift to love, i V enn e th H. Bran non, and make haste to be kind… This is a blessing I sometimes offer at the end of Holy Eucharist. I didn’t make it up; it was frequently heard in the Diocese of Idaho because our Bishop was fond of using it. The quote is attributed to Henri-Frédéric Amiel, a poet and moral philosopher who studied in Germany and worked in Switzerland in the mid-nineteenth century. The opening phrase is quite bracing: “Life is short…” Who wants to be reminded of their mortality during a sacred feast? But scripture is constantly reminding us of this truth: All people are grass, their constancy is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades…but the word of our God will stand forever (Isaiah 40:6-8).

If we accept that life is short, the next question becomes, “How then shall we live?” According to Amiel and our spiritual forebears, our human freedom is meant to gladden the hearts of others. The blessing goes on: …so be swift to love, and make haste to be kind. There’s no time to waste. This blessing is not just about being nice, although that’s not a bad place to start. This blessing is about genuinely caring about the well-being of others and making choices that lift them up, rather than tear them down. This is so important for the staff at Saint Michael, that we have set it as a core value: a brave kindness that makes us better than when we arrived. Romans 8:26-39
The Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. And God, who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn within a large family. And those whom he predestined he also called; and those whom he called he also justified; and those whom he justified he also glorified. What then are we to say about these things? If God is for us, who is against us? He who did not withhold his own Son, but gave him up for all of us, will he not with him also give us everything else? Who will bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? It is Christ Jesus, who died, yes, who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us. Who will separate us from the love of Christ?
