This week, I’ve had the opportunity to catch up with a handful of parishioners Re , v. D a over the phone. Although each t ir a r. C hristopher D. G conversation has been beautifully unique, each person has echoed a similar idea. In this time of quarantine and social distancing, they have had an opportunity to slow down, be more thoughtful, and most of all, to pray more. I imagine we would all say that prayer is a good thing, but how many of us actually make prayer a regular, intentional habit? Perhaps we remember to pray before meals, or maybe, on a good day, we begin or end the day with prayer. What if we look around our community, our city, and our world, and rather than get caught in the mess, begin to engage with prayer? In other words, could we thoughtfully hold the complexity of our world in the quiet calm of prayer? As many of you know, I’ve never been described as quiet, but it seems as though each new year brings an opportunity to find more and more grounding when I talk to God. Today, we will hear the Parable of the Sower. Jesus tells a story about seeds that fall on the path, on the rocks, on shallow soil, and finally on good soil. Jesus says, “…as for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it” (Matthew 13:23). We hope to be good soil, deep enough to bear fruit for a lifetime or more. Prayer can help us become the good, deep soil God created us to be. I’m pleased that, in addition to praying in your own homes, you can come to pray in the Saint Michael and Bishop Moore Chapels, even on Sundays. As we continue our new reality, prayer can be a vital way to stay healthy and centered on what matters most: loving God and loving our neighbors.
