In today’s Gospel lesson, Jesus says, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers Re , v. D a t are few (Mt. 9:37).” This wellir a r. C hristopher D. G known verse comes after a series of miraculous healings that received a lot of attention, drawing large crowds around Jesus as he traveled. When Jesus saw the crowds, he had compassion on them because they looked like lost sheep. How many of us have felt that way in these recent weeks? For many of us, perhaps most of us, we are swimming in a sea of uncertainty that has become frustrating and exhausting. It seems like everywhere I look on TV or online, I see mostly negativity and pain. Finding good news is hard. It’s as if we’re all, in our unique ways, like lost sheep. For Jesus, life was never easy. His life was full of pain and heartbreak. Yet Jesus was full of hope. Jesus hoped for a future in which all people discover the transformative, healing power of God. He told his followers, “Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest… For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light (Mt. 11:28-30).” Today, we are reminded to find rest in the arms of Christ. Our future is never certain, but we have been given the gift of hope. When we rest in the truth of God, we are strengthened for the work of the kingdom, and we have such good work to do. All around us, people are searching for meaning and purpose and a place to belong. How can we can go out into this amazing harvest and begin to lead people toward the love of God? Today, find rest and renewal in the arms of Christ, but don’t stay there, because the harvest is plentiful, and we can be part of this blessed work. With great hope,

Genesis 18:1-15
The Lord appeared to Abraham by the oaks of Mamre, as he sat at the entrance of his tent in the heat of the day. He looked up and saw three men standing near him. When he saw them, he ran from the tent entrance to
meet them, and bowed down to the ground. He said, “My lord, if I find favor with you, do not pass by your servant. Let a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree. Let me bring a little bread, that you may refresh yourselves, and after that you may pass on—since you have come to your servant.” So they said, “Do as you have said.” And Abraham hastened into the tent to Sarah, and said, “Make ready quickly three measures of choice flour, knead it, and make cakes.” Abraham ran to the herd, and took a calf, tender and good, and gave it to the servant, who hastened to prepare it. Then he took curds and milk and the calf that he had prepared, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree while they ate. Matthew 9:35-10:8 The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory to you, Lord Christ.
Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and curing every disease and every sickness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” Then Jesus summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to cure
every disease and every sickness. These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon, also known as Peter, and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Cananaean, and Judas Iscariot, the one who betrayed him. These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Go nowhere among the Gentiles, and enter no town of the Samaritans, but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. As you go, proclaim the good news, ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. You received without payment; give without payment. The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
