Whenever life challenges me, especially in such significant ways, I seek hope wherever I can find it. I’m not referring to “the silver lining,” I’m referring to the deep, purposeful, ever-present hope of God.

Today, we hear a portion of the story of Joseph from the Book of Genesis. Joseph’s story is by far the longest single story in Genesis, making it very important indeed. Although there are countless ways to interpret Joseph’s story, I believe there is an important lesson Joseph can teach all of us right now: God works for the good in all things. Above all else, Joseph remains connected to God, hopeful that the terrible things that are happening to him can somehow be turned into good. In today’s lesson, Joseph finally experiences the full purpose of his struggle. Through the heartbreak, the pain, and the hate, Joseph has remained steadfast. Finally, after so much time in darkness, Joseph realizes that God has indeed worked out all of his struggles for the good. Our current struggles will not last forever, but believe they will be worthwhile. When we are brought low, even broken, we can discover new, more faithful strength for a future that is better than we had even hoped. God remains faithful to us, and when our faith holds, we will indeed find that with God, all things work for the good.

SAINT MICHAEL CHURCH HAS LEFT THE BUILDING! While we’re not gathering in large groups in the church building, we are gathering in small groups outside of the church walls: saintmichael.org/smallgroups, In addition, worship and formation are available online: saintmichael.org/live and saintmichael.org/liveformation. The church building is open for Distribution of Communion, Private Prayer, the Book Shop, and staff who need or wish to come in. Everyone should enter through the south side of the building on Colgate Avenue and be distanced, masked, and in groups of 10 or less. The elderly and vulnerable are encouraged to stay home. Outdoor committals and weddings continue to be the safest option, and numbers are not restricted as long as everyone is distanced and masked. Beginning September 1, in light of guidance from the Diocese, we will be able to accommodate up to 20 people (including church personnel) for committals, weddings, and baptisms in Saint Michael Chapel.
