As I write this message to you, I am very aware of the stress of this past week. I have been holding you all in my prayers Re v. D and have felt yours for me and ta, ir a r. C hristopher D. G for one another. Our church bears witness to the power of God to unify us, even in our diversity. Each of us, in our imperfection, finds perfect love in Christ. We are sent out into the world to reflect God’s love to each and every person we meet, helping to build up God’s heavenly kingdom on earth. This work of hope does not end after the election, it only grows. Our mission is a sacred one, and we continue to witness to God’s love with courage and strength, and we need you! We need you to be an active supporter of our shared mission and ministry at Saint Michael. Now is the time to make your pledge of support for the discipleship work we will share next year. Please visit our website to watch videos from fellow parishioners and to make your pledge so we can expand our work next year. Next Wednesday is Veterans Day, and this Sunday evening, November 8, we will celebrate our veterans with an annual worship service of unity. This year, we won’t be able to celebrate Veterans Day in person, so we will have a special rebroadcast of last year’s service at 5:30 p.m. It will be a wonderful reminder of how much we have to celebrate, and I hope you will join us online. Our in-person worship continues each week, with excellent safety protocols in place. Beginning next Sunday, November 15, I’m very pleased to announce that we will begin distributing Holy Communion in each of our two morning services. Each in-person attendee will receive a single consecrated host in a small, individual envelope. At the end of the Eucharistic prayer, the celebrant will invite everyone in attendance to safely consume their host at their seat. Communion distribution will continue in the Saint Michael chapel after the morning services, as well. In addition to communion, we are rolling out a simpler ticketing process that shifts from household blocks to individual tickets. This will allow us to welcome a few more people into our space, while remaining well within our stringent safety limits. You may join us by reserving a ticket here. With deep gratitude,

BEGINNING NOVEMBER 15TH, CONSECRATED WAFERS AVAILABLE DURING SERVICES OF HOLY EUCHARIST: A limited number of people may attend livestream worship on Sunday at 9 A.M. (Traditional), 11 A.M. (Contemporary), and 8 P.M. (Compline). Attendees must be symptom-free, remain distanced from other households, and wear a mask at all times. Entrance is from the North side of the building and includes a brief screening. At Communion services beginning November 15th, consecrated wafers will be distributed as people enter the sanctuary and may be consumed at the end of the Eucharistic Prayer. Free tickets for the three Sunday services are available on a first-come, first-served basis on Monday at 10:00 A.M. at saintmichael.org/worshiptickets. Also beginning November 15th, Distribution of Holy Communion will be held at 12:15 P.M. – 1 P.M. and no longer requires a ticket (west entrance). Note: If Highland Park Public Schools return to online-only instruction, we must discontinue attendance at livestream worship and restrict the number of people entering the building.

Holy Eucharist Rite II One of Johann Sebastian Bach’s most important pedagogical works is a collection known as the “Orgelbüchlein.” This collection presents masterful miniatures in the genre of chorale prelude; that is, pieces that are based on the melody of a chorale (hymn). This collection presents an extraordinary variety of inventiveness and compositional creativity, for the most part on a modest scale. Standing, Sung by the Choir This particular piece sets the Lutheran chorale whose opening lines read “I call to you, Lord Jesus Christ, I beg you hear my cries, grant me mercy at this time, do not let me despair.” This hymn is a call for hope in our God, a sentiment which rings true throughout the ages.
This work forms the second movement of Mendelssohn’s first organ sonata. It is a fantastic example of the genre of “religious adagios” that were popularized in England during Mendelssohn’s lifetime, and which he certainly encountered during his many trips to that country. It sets a pastoral tone, calm and lovely, with simple musical lines and straightforward, singable melodies. The loveliness of this movement presents a necessary repose from the intensity of the other movements of Mendelssohn’s first organ sonata.

Please be seated for the Announcements This anthem has had several lives since Tye composed this music in 1553 as part of his rhyming Actes of The Apostles. Originally, it set to music the story of Peter and John’s arrest in Acts 4. By the 19th century, enterprising publishers realized that the music from Tye’s Actes could be set to any other texts with the same meter. One of the most popular chorale preludes from Bach’s collection the Orgelbüchlein, this piece is based on the melody of the Lutheran chorale “In dir ist freude.” The first lines of this hymn read “In thee is gladness amid all sadness, Jesus, daystar of my heart! By thee are given the gifts of heaven, thou the true Redeemer art!” The message of this hymn is conveyed in Bach’s organ setting with jubilant scales and leaping melodies. It reminds us that God is the bringer of joy in our lives.

Hallie Lawrence As a matter of practicality, when we pledge now, we are making a very thoughtful, forward-thinking dedication of our resources toward the church and the works of the church for 2021. In a way, that commitment is an investment in our community, but it also determines where we, as a family, intend to be focused. But “why� do we do this? Because we understand what it takes to run this church. We know what it feels like to have priests show up at the hospital, and we know what it means to have a group of church friends praying hard. But most importantly, we know how centering it is to have a sacred place with faithful leaders to return on Sunday to remind us of the next steps in our faith walk.
Maria D’Antoni During the COVID-19 pandemic, I have had more time to reflect on what is really important. I have found myself not just spending more time with God but reflecting on His goodness and His presence in our community. Being able to turn to the cyber world to experience church in a way I have never felt before has been a blessing. Could it be that our church has actually grown through this crisis? Is it that we have become social media evangelists? How exciting is that! I want to be a part of this and to be a modern-day disciple of the Lord! More than ever before, I find it easy to say yes to the giving of my time, talent, and treasure! I am convinced that I am just returning was is rightfully His!
Blair Oden I have found that the support our family provides Saint Michael is directly proportionate to our own spiritual growth. The impact on our community, both within SMAA and externally, through the generosity of our parish is profound and is expanding the Kingdom of God!

IN-PERSON WORSHIP (LIMITED SEATS AVAILABLE) For the past six months, in-person gatherings have been strictly limited by government and church authorities due to COVID-19. Now, with the permission of from our governing bodies, Saint Michael is pleased to be offering limited in-person opportunities for worship and communion. If you and your household are well, we look forward to your presence among us. Our present in-person worship offerings include our Sunday services and Distribution of Communion. There are limited spots for each engagement, and safety measures have been enacted to ensure the protection of all who join us. In-person worship is offered every Sunday at our 9 a.m. Traditional, 11 a.m. Contemporary, and 8 p.m. Compline services. Reserve tickets for your household at saintmichael.org/worshiptickets. Tickets to each service are available on a first-come, first-served basis one week at a time on Monday at 10 a.m. No one will be admitted without a ticket. Livestreams and video recordings of our weekly services remain available so that all can watch and participate. Visit saintmichael.org/live to tune in. WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW: For your safety, the following protocols must be followed while on-site: •
Masks are required inside all church buildings, except for children under 2 and persons with a medical exception.
•
You must maintain at least 6-feet distance from those outside your household; designated singers must allow 12-feet
•
No shaking hands or physical contact with those outside your household
•
No physical passing of the peace
•
No congregational singing
•
No passing of the offering plate (there are other ways to give!)
•
No coming forward for communion; consecrated bread will be distributed as you enter the church.
•
No coffee or congregating in the church after the service has concluded. The people will exit out the main sanctuary door immediately after the service.
