9 AM TRADITIONAL CHURCH

WELCOME FROM THE RECTOR

The Rev. Dr. Christopher D. Girata

We’re so glad you’ve joined us at Saint Michael today. We’d love to get to know you better, so please take a moment to fill out the welcome card, either physically or digitally, that can be found on this page or in the pew back in front of you. Our Welcome Team members are in the hallways today to help you with anything you need. There is excitement throughout the church and I’m so glad you’re part of this vibrant community of faith. Please make sure you pick up a Sunday News handout this morning. It details lots of extra programs between Sundays, such as the excellent speaking event this Wednesday, featuring three-time bestselling author and leadership expert, Tommy Spaulding, from 5-7 p.m. in our new Parish Hall. Additionally, we are now in our annual Stewardship season when we ask everyone to make intentional commitments to discipleship growth through giving, service, and prayer. Please consider how you’d like to grow this year, and then make your pledge for growth today. As we prepare to worship together, I invite you to take a moment and center yourself on God’s presence. Worshiping, learning, and giving together help us grow closer to who God created us to be, and you’re part of that work. May God bless you today and every day, and I hope to see you again very soon!

Prelude Welcome Introit (seated. sung by the Saint Michael Cherubs) Amazing Grace

New Britain

Amazing grace! How sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found; was blind, but now I see. ’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,a nd grace my fears relieved; How precious did that grace appear the hour I first believed. When we’ve been there ten thousand years, bright shining as the sun, We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise than when we’d first begun. Entering Procession (standing, sung by all)

Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen. Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid; Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

“Glory to God” The Collect of the Day (standing) Celebrant People Celebrant

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray.

Almighty and everlasting God, you are always more ready to hear than we to pray, and to give more than we either desire or deserve: Pour upon us the abundance of your mercy, forgiving us those things of which our con science is afraid, and giving us those good things for which we are not worthy to ask, except through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ

Children ages three through eight are invited to proceed to children’s chapel by exiting through the east doors at the back of the nave; they will return to the nave following the Peace.

our Savior; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. The Lesson (seated)

Isaiah 5:1-7

Let me sing for my beloved my love-song concerning his vineyard: My beloved had a vineyard on a very fertile hill. He dug it and cleared it of stones, and planted it with choice vines; he built a watchtower in the midst of it, and hewed out a wine vat in it; he expected it to yield grapes, but it yielded wild grapes. And now, inhabitants of Jerusalem and people of Judah, judge between me and my vineyard. What more was there to do for my vineyard that I have not done in it? When I expected it to yield grapes, why did it yield wild grapes? And now I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard. I will remove its hedge, and it shall be devoured; I will break down its wall, and it shall be trampled down. I will make it a waste; it shall not be pruned or hoed, and it shall be overgrown with briers and thorns; I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it. For the vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel, and the people of Judah are his pleasant planting; he expected justice, but saw bloodshed; righteousness, but heard a cry! Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. Chanted by the Choir to a psalm setting by Jonathan Batishill.

The Psalm (seated)

Psalm 80:7-14

Restore us, O God of hosts; * show the light of your countenance, and we shall be saved. You have brought a vine out of Egypt; * you cast out the nations and planted it. You prepared the ground for it; * it took root and filled the land. The mountains were covered by its shadow * and the towering cedar trees by its boughs. You stretched out its tendrils to the Sea * and its branches to the River. Why have you broken down its wall, * so that all who pass by pluck off its grapes? The wild boar of the forest has ravaged it, * and the beasts of the field have grazed upon it. Turn now, O God of hosts, look down from heaven; behold and tend this vine; * preserve what your right hand has planted.

Matthew 21:33-46

Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. Jesus said, “Listen to another parable. There was a landowner who planted a vineyard, put a fence around it, dug a wine press in it, and built a watchtower. Then he leased it to tenants and went to another country. When the harvest time had come, he sent his slaves to the tenants to collect his produce. But the tenants seized his slaves and beat one, killed another, and stoned another. Again he sent other slaves, more than the first; and they treated them in the same way. Finally he sent his son to them, saying, They will respect my son.’ But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, ‘This is the heir; come, let us kill him and get his inheritance.’ So they seized him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him. Now when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?” They said to him, “He will put those wretches to a miserable death, and lease the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the produce at the harvest time.” Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the scriptures: ‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; this was the Lord’s doing, and it is amazing in our eyes’? Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that produces the fruits of the kingdom. The one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; and it will crush anyone on whom it falls.” When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they realized that he was speaking about them. They wanted to arrest him, but they feared the crowds, because they regarded him as a prophet. Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ. The Sermon (seated)

the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. The Prayers of the People: Form VI (standing) Celebrant

The Holy Communion Offertory Anthem (sung by the Saint Michael Choir) Every Time I Feel the Spirit William L. Dawson was an AfricanAmerican composer, choir director, and professor specializing in Black religious folk music. In 1930, he became director of the Tuskegee Institute's School of Music, a position he held until his retirement in 1955. "Ev'ry Time I Feel the Spirit" is a well-known African-American spiritual dating to before the Civil War, frequently covered by contemporary artists and gospel groups. Dawson's arrangement captures the spiritual's exciting rhythm and exhilaration.

William L. Dawson

Ev’ry time I feel the spirit, Moving in my heart, I will pray; Yes, ev’ry time I feel the spirit, Moving in my heart, I will pray. Upon the mountain my Lord spoke, Out of his mouth came fire and smoke; Looked all around me, It looked so fine, Till I asked my Lord if all was mine. Ev’ry time I feel the spirit, Moving in my heart, I will pray; Yes, ev’ry time I feel the spirit, Moving in my heart, I will pray. Jordan river is chilly an’ cold, It chills the body, but not the soul; There ain’t but one train upon this track, It runs to heaven an’ right back. Ev’ry time I feel the spirit, Moving in my heart, I will pray; Yes, ev’ry time I feel the spirit, Moving in my heart, I will pray. - African-American Spiritual Presentation Hymn (standing, sung by all) “Praise God, from whom all blessings flow” Old 100th

The Great Thanksgiving: Eucharistic Prayer B (standing) Celebrant People Celebrant People Celebrant People

All baptized persons of any age regardless of their denomination and tradition are welcome to share in the banquet of the Lord’s Supper.

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: The Sanctus (standing, sung by all)

Here a Proper Preface is sung or said on all Sundays, and on other occasions as appointed.

Hymn S 128

“Holy, holy, holy” Please kneel as you are able as the Celebrant continues... ... Therefore, according to his command, O Father, All

We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory;

And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with Saint Michael and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN. And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

All are invited to come forward to the Communion rail at the direction of our ushers. Stand or kneel at the rail as you are able, and receive the wafer in the palm of your outstretched hands. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, clasp your hands in front of you with your palms down. Receive the wine by drinking from the chalice as it is offered to you, or by retaining the wafer, to dip lightly into the chalice for yourself. If you are not receiving, you may cross your arms over your chest and receive a blessing. If you are unable to physically come to the rail, please indicate to an usher that you would like to receive Communion at your seat. 9

Healey Willan immigrated from England to Canada in 1913, teaching at the Toronto Conservatory and leaving a lasting mark on church music. Published in 1924, “O Sacred Feast” exemplifies his polyphonyinfluenced sacred style—conservative, understated, its four lines nearly singing themselves, with subtle text painting at “our souls are filled” and “everlasting glory.”

Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
