SAINT MICHAEL and All Angels Episcopal Church
The Twenty-First Sunday After Pentecost October 18, 2026
9 AM TRADITIONAL CHURCH
WELCOME FROM THE RECTOR
The Rev. Dr. Christopher D. Girata
We’re so glad you’ve joined us at Saint Michael today. We’d love to get to know you better, so please take a moment to fill out the welcome card, either physically or digitally, that can be found on this page or in the pew back in front of you. Our Welcome Team members are in the hallways today to help you with anything you need. We have such great enthusiasm throughout the church and I’m so glad you’re part of this vibrant community of faith. Please make sure you pick up a Sunday News handout this morning. It details lots of extra programs between Sundays, such as the upcoming Men of Saint Michael Fall Cookout on Thursday, October 22, and Fall Family Day at the Farmers Market on Saturday, October 31. And parents, please note that Nativity Pageant auditions begin today and will continue next Sunday, October 25, for students in 3rd-8th grade. Additionally, we are now in our annual Stewardship season when we ask everyone to make intentional commitments to discipleship growth through giving, service, and prayer. Please consider how you’d like to grow this year, and then make your pledge for growth today. As we prepare to worship together, I invite you to take a moment and center yourself on God’s presence. Worshiping, learning, and giving together help us grow closer to who God created us to be, and you’re part of that work. May God bless you today and every day, and I hope to see you again very soon!

Isaiah 45:1-7
Thus says the LORD to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have grasped to subdue nations before him and strip kings of their robes, to open doors before him—and the gates shall not be closed: I will go before you and level the mountains, I will break in pieces the doors of bronze and cut through the bars of iron, I will give you the treasures of darkness and riches hidden in secret places, so that you may know that it is I, the LORD, the God of Israel, who call you by your name. For the sake of my servant
George Oldroyd (1886–1951), an English organist and composer, published his Liturgical Preludes in 1938. The second prelude sets a reflective, unhurried mood, a quiet invitation to prayer.
Children ages three through eight are invited to proceed to children’s chapel by exiting through the east doors at the back of the nave; they will return to the nave following the Peace.

Jacob, and Israel my chosen, I call you by your name, I surname you, though you do not know me. I am the LORD, and there is no other; besides me there is no god. I arm you, though you do not know me, so that they may know, from the rising of the sun and from the west, that there is no one besides me; I am the LORD, and there is no other. I form light and create darkness,I make weal and create woe; I the LORD do all these things. Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. Psalm 96:1-9
Sing to the LORD a new song; * sing to the LORD, all the whole earth. Sing to the LORD and bless his Name; * proclaim the good news of his salvation from day to day. Declare his glory among the nations * and his wonders among all peoples. For great is the LORD and greatly to be praised; * he is more to be feared than all gods. As for all the gods of the nations, they are but idols; * but it is the LORD who made the heavens. Oh, the majesty and magnificence of his presence! * Oh, the power and the splendor of his sanctuary! Ascribe to the LORD, you families of the peoples; * ascribe to the LORD honor and power. Ascribe to the LORD the honor due his Name; * bring offerings and come into his courts. Worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness; * let the whole earth tremble before him. The Pharisees went and plotted to entrap Jesus in what he said. So they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are sincere, and teach the way of God in accordance with truth, and show deference to no one; for you do not regard people with partiality. Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to the
emperor, or not?” But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, “Why are you putting me to the test, you hypocrites? Show me the coin used for the tax.” And they brought him a denarius. Then he said to them, “Whose head is this, and whose title?” They answered, “The emperor’s.” Then he said to them, “Give therefore to the emperor the things that are the emperor’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” When they heard this, they were amazed; and they left him and went away. Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ. The Sermon (seated)
The Rev. Dr. Christopher D. Girata
The Nicene Creed (standing) All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

Jeff Reeves's "Gracious Spirit, Dwell with Me" sets Thomas Toke Lynch's hymn text asking the Holy Spirit to remain with us and shape our lives. The music has a warm, flowing character that reflects the prayerful words, moving between gentle reflection and fuller passages of confidence and praise. At its heart, the piece is a simple prayer for God's presence to guide us each day.
And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.
Truthful Spirit, dwell with me, I would truthful be. Help me now Thy truth to see, Oh, I would be like Thee.
We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with Saint Michael and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.
And with wisdom kind and clear, Thy life in mine appear. And with actions kind and true, For Christ, my Savior, speak. Holy Spirit, dwell with me, I would holy bee. Show Thy mercy tenderly, Oh, make me more like Thee. Help me choose to do what’s right And cherish all things good. Holy Spirit, dwell with me, I want to live like Thee.
By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN. And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

Communion Anthem (sung by the Saint Michael Choir) Sing Praise to God Who Reigns Above Sing praise to God who reigns above, the God of all creation, the God of power, the God of love, the God of our salvation. With healing balm my soul is filled and every faithless murmur stilled: To God all praise and glory.
Percy W. Whitlock
All are invited to come forward to the Communion rail at the direction of our ushers. Stand or kneel at the rail as you are able, and receive the wafer in the palm of your outstretched hands. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, clasp your hands in front of you with your palms down. Receive the wine by drinking from the chalice as it is offered to you, or by retaining the wafer, to dip lightly into the chalice for yourself. If you are not receiving, you may cross your arms over your chest and receive a blessing. If you are unable to physically come to the rail, please indicate to an usher that you would like to receive Communion at your seat.
Percy Whitlock's setting of "Sing Praise to God Who Reigns Above" brings warm, joyful character to Johann Jakob Schütz's beloved hymn of praise. Whitlock, best known for his expressive organ music, gives the tune a fresh choral treatment, balancing lyrical lines with bright, fullvoiced celebration—a reminder to respond to God's faithfulness with grateful praise. What God’s Almighty pow’r hath made His gracious mercy keepeth; By morning glow or evening shade His watchful eye ne’er sleepeth: Within the Kingdom of his might All is just, and all is right: To God all power and glory! Then all my joyful way along I sing aloud thy praises, That men may hear the grateful song My voice unwearied raises: Be joyful in the Lord, my heart! Both soul and body bear your part!
