Happy Easter! We’re so glad you’ve joined us at Saint Michael today. We’d love to get to know you better, so please take a moment to fill out the welcome card, either physically or digitally, that can be found on this page or in the pew back in front of you. Our Welcome Team members are in the hallways today to help you with anything you need.

Today we celebrate Senior Recognition Sunday and share a special blessing with those graduating high school this year at both the 9 and 11 a.m. services in the Church. Many of our graduating seniors have grown up among us, so let’s offer them a special bit of love and blessing at the end of the school year. Then later tonight, please join our Saint Michael Choristers for Choral Evensong in the Church at 4 p.m.

Please pick up a Sunday News handout if you haven’t already and join us for our special programming whenever you can. The Women of Saint Michael will be holding their spring luncheon this week. And don’t miss some of our special worship experiences, including tonight’s Choral Compline service at 7 p.m. in the Church. And save the date for our Feast of Pentecost celebrations on Sunday, May 24!

As we prepare to worship together, I invite you to take a moment and center yourself on God’s presence. The flowers adorning the altar are given to the glory of God and in thanksgiving for the marriage of Electra Thomas and Philip Kensinger.

The Adagio features a soft, homophonic texture with Wagnerian chromaticism. It opens with a slowly unfolding canon that layers a distinct theme in B minor (established by the key signature and a pedal B). The middle section develops an expansive, declamatory melody before a flute solo reintroduces the opening theme, which is then further developed in the closing section.

Children ages three through eight are invited to meet a member of our ministry staff by the pulpit to be escorted to children’s chapel; they will return to the congregation following the Peace.

Filled with the Holy Spirit, Stephen gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. “Look,” he said, “I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!” But they covered their ears, and with a loud shout all rushed together against him. Then they dragged him out of the city and began to stone him; and the witnesses laid their coats at the feet of a young man named Saul. While they were stoning Stephen, he prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” Then he knelt down and cried out in a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” When he had said this, he died.

The Nicene Creed (standing)

All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.

He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Joseph M. Martin is a widely published American composer, pianist, and music educator known for his accessible and expressive sacred choral works.

In “O Lord, Our Lord, How Excellent,” he sets Psalm 8 to music in a way that highlights both God’s majesty and the psalmist’s wonder at creation.

Here a Proper Preface is sung or said on all Sundays, and on other occasions as appointed.

During the season of Easter, we return to the practice of the early church and stand during the Prayer of Consecration and the Post-Communion Prayer. You may also stand to receive Communion at the altar rail.

At the following words concerning the bread, the Celebrant is to hold it, or lay a hand upon it; and at the words concerning the cup, to hold or place a hand upon the cup and any other vessel containing wine to be consecrated.

All are invited to come forward to the Communion rail at the direction of our ushers. Stand or kneel at the rail as you are able, and receive the wafer in the palm of your outstretched hands. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, clasp your hands in front of you with your palms down. Receive the wine by drinking from the chalice as it is offered to you, or by retaining the wafer, to dip lightly into the chalice for yourself. If you are not receiving, you may cross your arms over your chest and receive a blessing. If you are unable to physically come to the rail, please indicate to an usher that you would like to receive Communion at your seat.

Anton Bruckner’s music was known for its traditionalism and extensive repetition. While best known for large choral and orchestral works, he was also an organist. Today’s anthem exemplifies his sacred choral music with elegant part-writing, lyrical lines, and subtle textural changes. Note the suddenly softer “irreprehensibilis est”— this dynamic shift represents awe for God the Creator’s greatness.

Ralph Vaughan Williams was a preeminent twentiethcentury English composer, conductor, and organist. As editor of The English Hymnal (1906)—still in use today—he made a lasting mark on church music. His motet “O Taste and See,” based on Psalm 34:8, was composed for Queen Elizabeth II’s 1953 coronation and performed during the communion service.

Carson Cooman is an American composer known for his extensive output of organ, chamber, and vocal music. Written in 2016, “Westminster Carillon” quotes the Westminster Quarters (the chimes heard in Big Ben) and the hymn tune Westminster Abbey by Henry Purcell.
