We’re so glad you’ve joined us at Saint Michael today. We’d love to get to know you better, so please take a moment to fill out the welcome card, either physically or digitally, that can be found on this page or in the pew back in front of you. Our Welcome Team members are in the hallways today to help you with anything you need.

We are now fully into the summer season. Please pray for our teens during Youth Mission Week (June 1 – 5) as they serve our youngest neighbors as they run Camp All Angels at Stephen C. Foster Elementary. Please also pray for all those in our community who will come to Saint Michael for Vacation Bible School (June 8 – 11) seeking to grow more deeply in their faith. And join us for the start of our Pub Theology series tomorrow, Monday, June 1, with a timely and thought-provoking conversation: “How Social Media and a 24-hour News Cycle Shape Identity.” Please pick up a copy of the Sunday News on your way out for more information on programs throughout the summer.

As we prepare to worship together, I invite you to take a moment and center yourself on God’s presence. The Prelude and Fugue in E-flat Major frames

Johann Sebastian Bach’s Dritter Teil der Clavier Übung (1739). Rich in theological symbolism, the work alludes to the Holy Trinity: E-flat major has three flats, and both movements feature three principal sections and themes. The majestic Prelude opens as a French overture with crisp dotted rhythms and dramatic echoes, followed by contrasting episodes including a lyrical melody and lively Italianate fugue. The Fugue unfolds in three sections, associated with the Trinity. The first, representing God the Father, is written in solemn stile antico. The second, Christ the Son, is lighter and animated, for manuals alone.

The third, the Holy Spirit, is an exuberant gigue recalling the opening theme with overwhelming energy.

Composed in Rome on 10 February 1831 during Felix Mendelssohn’s European tour, Verleih’ uns Frieden belongs to the fertile period following the young composer’s early masterpieces, including the String Octet and A Midsummer Night’s Dream overture. Originally scored for winds, strings, and organ, the work is a serene three-verse setting of a prayer for peace. Mendelssohn gradually expands the musical texture: from a hushed, contemplative opening for basses alone to a final verse of radiant warmth for full choir and ensemble. The result is music of extraordinary tenderness and assurance, quietly suggesting that peace itself may be close at hand.
