We’re so glad you’ve joined us at Saint Michael today. Today is the Feast of Pentecost! On Pentecost, the Holy Spirit was given to Jesus’s disciples and helped inspire them to create the Church, which is why we often call this day the “birthday of the church.” We will celebrate with festive worship throughout the day and a reception on the Colgate patio at 10 a.m.

With summer coming soon, please pick up a Sunday News handout if you haven’t already and join us for our special programming whenever you can. We hope you will sign up to serve or participate in Youth Mission Week (June 1 – 5) and Vacation Bible School (June 8 – 11) now. And join us for the start of our Pub Theology series on Monday, June 1 with a timely and thought-provoking conversation: “How Social Media and a 24-hour News Cycle Shape Identity.”

As we prepare to worship together, I invite you to take a moment and center yourself on God’s presence. Worshiping, learning, and giving together help us grow closer to who God created us to be, and you’re part of that work. May God bless you today and every day, and I hope to see you again very soon!

Hymn 516

This grand fantasia, also known as the “Pièce d’Orgue,” is one of Bach’s more unusual organ compositions. It opens with an extended flourish marked “très vitement” and then enters a slower section in rich six-part harmony full of dramatic seventh and ninth chords. The third section also comes as a surprise and travels through a series of arpeggiated dissonances to reach a virtuosic, exuberant conclusion.

Children ages three through eight are invited to meet a member of our ministry staff by the pulpit to be escorted to children’s chapel; they will return to the congregation following the Peace.

When the day of Pentecost had come, the disciples were all tog ether in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were de vout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia , Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs-in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.” All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” But others sneered and said, “They are filled with new wine.” But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, “Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: ‘In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of

People I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.

He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
