Dear Friends. Happy Independence Day Weekend! I hope you have a wonderful time with family and friends, soaking in summer and giving thanks for our country.
A strong way to honor the sacrifices of those who came before us and thank God for His merciful bounty is to come to worship this Sunday, either in person or online [hyperlink to online streaming]. Our music lineup at 9 a.m. will fill your heart and quicken your step! We’ll enjoy hymns like, “My country, ‘tis of thee,” “O beautiful for spacious skies,” and “God of our fathers, whose almighty hand.” These hymns make it clear that what makes our country special is not pitched partisan battles, manufactured culture wars, or unchecked greed. What makes our country special is God’s protection and providence, nature’s grandeur, and a freedom that finds its root and purpose in learning how to love one another as God loves us.
On this most patriotic of weekends, make sure your faith is informing your freedom, so you have something unique to offer the public conversation.
For those who love sweet things, please don’t miss our annual “Pie for the 4th of July” celebration this Sunday on the patio at 10 a.m.. Our parish bakers are hard at work ensuring that everyone who comes to church will find a flavor they love!
Finally, we pause this weekend to remember all those who died in the devastating Hill Country flooding this time last year. Each one is precious in the eyes of God and firmly held in Christ’s mercy. Continue to pray for healing and wholeness for those most deeply affected.

All are invited to come forward to the Communion rail at the direction of our ushers. Stand or kneel at the rail as you are able, and receive the wafer in the palm of your outstretched hands. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, clasp your hands in front of you with your palms down. Receive the wine by drinking from the chalice as it is offered to you, or by retaining the wafer, to dip lightly into the chalice for yourself. If you are not receiving, you may cross your arms over your chest and receive a blessing. If you are unable to physically come to the rail, please indicate to an usher that you would like to receive Communion at your seat.

The Collect of the Day
O God, you have taught us to keep all your commandments by loving you and our neighbor: Grant us the grace of your Holy Spirit, that we may be devoted to you with our whole heart, and united to one another with pure affection; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
The Lesson Romans 7:15-25a
I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. Now if I do what I do not want, I agree that the law is good. But in fact it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells within me. For I know that nothing g ood dwells within me, that is, in my flesh. I can will what is right, but I cannot do it. For I do not do the good I want, but the e vil I do not want is what I do. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells within me. So I find it to be a law that when I want to do what is good, evil lies close at hand. For I delight in the law of God in my inmost self, but I see in my members another law at war with the law of my mind, making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members.
Wretched man that I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!

The Gospel Matthew 11:16-19, 25-30
Jesus said, “To what will I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to one another, ‘ We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not mourn.’ For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds.” ... At that time Jesus said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will.
