Dear friends, welcome to Opening Week! We are delighted to welcome you into Saint Michael’s beautiful new building. These spaces were created for worship, learning, fellowship, and ministry, and today they come alive with our community. Be sure to watch Chris Girata’s welcome video for a quick overview of the building before you explore. A few reminders: - Park in the new garage on levels B1 or B2. B1 offers the easiest access through the underground connector. - Childcare for infants and toddlers is located to the right as you enter the Atrium from the north. - Traditional services at 9 and 11 a.m. will be held in the Church. - Joy! and Contemporary services will meet in the second-floor Parish Hall. - Light incense will be used at the 11 a.m. Traditional Service. - Sunday education classes resume August 16 in the education building. Louis Vierne, born nearly blind, became a great French organ virtuoso, serving over three decades as titular organist of NotreDame Cathedral in Paris. A student of Franck and Widor, he blended Romantic tradition with a personal, melancholic voice. This Berceuse, from his 24 Pièces en style libre (1913–14), evokes a lullaby through soft, flowing harmonies. Children ages three through eight are invited to proceed to children’s chapel by exiting through the east doors at the back of the nave; they will return to the nave following the Peace.

At Horeb, the mount of God, Elijah came to a cave, and spent the night there. Then the word of the LORD came to him, saying, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” He answered, “I have been very zealous for the LORD, the God of hosts; for the Israelites have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. The Holy Communion Irish-born Charles Wood's influence was felt through students like Ralph Vaughan Williams and Michael Tippett. Wood seems not to have been ambitious; most of his works were published posthumously. He spent his life in his teacher Charles Villiers Stanford's shadow, and much of Wood's music derives from Stanford's style. Most of it was written for Cambridge college choirs, suited to double-choir singing. By contrast, "Oculi omnium" is one of two short, four-part introits published in 1927. Here a Proper Preface is sung or said on all Sundays, and on other occasions as appointed.

All baptized persons of any age regardless of their denomination and tradition are welcome to share in the banquet of the Lord’s Supper. All are invited to come forward to the Communion rail at the direction of our ushers. Stand or kneel at the rail as you are able, and receive the wafer in the palm of your outstretched hands. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, clasp your hands in front of you with your palms down. Receive the wine by drinking from the chalice as it is offered to you, or by retaining the wafer, to dip lightly into the chalice for yourself. If you are not receiving, you may cross your arms over your chest and receive a blessing. If you are unable to physically come to the rail, please indicate to an usher that you would like to receive Communion at your seat. 9
The Breaking of the Bread (kneeling, sung by all) Johann Sebastian Bach served as Kantor of St. Thomas Church in Leipzig for the last 27 years of his life, and it was there that he assembled his so-called “Great Eighteen” chorale preludes, gathering and revising organ works composed across his career. BWV 667 sets Martin Luther’s Pentecost hymn, itself a German paraphrase of the ancient Veni Creator Spiritus, calling on the Holy Spirit to visit and fill the hearts of the faithful. Bach based this setting on an earlier, simpler version from his youthful Orgelbüchlein (BWV 631), then expanded it, placing the chorale melody plainly in the upper voice while two inner parts weave animated figuration above an independent, striding bass line.
