The Rev. Ken Brannon

Dear friends, welcome to Opening Day! We are delighted to welcome you into Saint Michael’s beautiful new building for the first time. These spaces were created for worship, learning, fellowship, and ministry, and today they come alive with our community.

Be sure to watch Chris Girata’s welcome video for a quick overview of the building before you explore. A few reminders:

- Park in the new garage on levels B1 or B2. B1 offers the easiest access through the underground connector.

- Childcare for infants and toddlers is located to the right as you enter the Atrium from the north.

- Traditional services at 9 and 11 a.m. will be held in the Church.

- Joy! and Contemporary services will meet in the second-floor Parish Hall.

- Light incense will be used at the 11 a.m. Traditional Service.

- Sunday education classes resume August 16 in the education building. Please remember to check in for your class.

Whether you’re a longtime member or visiting for the first time, we’re so glad you’re here. We hope you’ll enjoy exploring and celebrating this exciting new chapter in the life of Saint Michael.

Joseph Bonnet (1884–1944) was a prominent French organist and composer who served as first president and a founding member of the Institut Grégorien (Gregorian Institute) in Paris, established to preserve and teach Gregorian chant and authentic liturgical music. After moving to the United States in 1917, he toured as a concert organist before being brought to Rochester, NY, to start the organ department at the Eastman School of Music in 1921. He traveled back and forth between the US and France until the outbreak of World War II, when he returned to the US and eventually settled in Canada, where he founded the organ program at the Conservatoire de Montréal before his death.

Sicut Cervus by Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina is one of the most celebrated motets of the Renaissance. Composed for fourpart a cappella choir, it sets Psalm 42:1 ("As the deer longs for flowing streams, so my soul longs for you, O God"). It exemplifies Palestrina's polyphony: flowing, imitative lines that create a serene and reverent atmosphere.

All baptized persons of any age regardless of their denomination and tradition are welcome to share in the banquet of the Lord’s Supper.

English composer Paul Bryan (b. 1950) was born in Chester and educated at the Royal Manchester College of Music. He served as director of music at St. John's College School, Cambridge, from 1977 to 1999, and frequently played organ for the Ely Cathedral Octagon Singers.
