BECVAR FUND FOR MATHEMATICS

The Tom Becvar Fund for Mathematics was established in 2023 by Tom McGinn ‘82 as an endowed fund whose earnings support Faculty and Academic Excellence through the SLUH Mathematics program.

THE IMPACT

’24 - ’25 HIGHLIGHTS AND ACCOLADES

• We are in our second year of a new path for incoming freshmen who test out of Algebra 1. The first class of this new path took Geometry last year and have been overwhelmingly successful in Honors Precalculus this year as sophomores. The majority of them are set up to take BC Calculus next year and Calc III and AP Statistics their senior year.

• We welcomed two new teachers to our department, Dr. Fernando Alvear and Ms. Molly Kelly, who have brought so much enthusiasm and creativity to their courses and our department.

• 77% of students taking AP AB Calculus test scored a 3 or above. (global average: 64%)

• 84% of students taking AP BC Calculus test scored a 3 or above. (global average: 78%)

• 81% of students taking AP Statistics test scored a 3 or above. (global average: 60%)

• Mr. Don Steingruby received the M. Cathlin Casey Award in Teaching Excellence from St. Louis University’s 1818 Advanced College Credit Program for his dedication to teaching 1818 classes at SLUH.

• Our Math Club, moderated by Mrs. Beth Kissel, had teams come in first and second place at the SLU MaPP (Mathematical Puzzle Programs) Contest at SLU at the beginning of March.
