P R E S I D E N T

For the past several years I have been fortunate enough to coach my oldest son in several sports for his school team. At the moment he plays soccer, baseball and basketball with his classmates. The teams are full of great kids who all seem to enjoy being out on the playing field. Growing up, I played the same sports and I find it very rewarding to see the kids have success and smiles on their faces. It really brings me back to my childhood and all of the memories that were made on the fields. I was a very competitive kid and loved to run around all day. If there was a game, I was playing. The one thing I didn’t do which I have now come to regret a bit is running track. So, when the opportunity came open to become the school’s track coach I couldn’t say no. Now, coaching a sport to live vicariously through your child is not the right reason to get into it. However, having an opportunity to teach young people is. As you can imagine, first grade is not an easy age to teach the technical skills of any sport including track.

So at track practice we try to focus less on running fast and more on things like having a positive attitude from the start, being a good teammate, respecting the other competitors, trying your hardest and having fun. We tried to get the kids comfortable with knowing that even though they may not win every race or event that they can be happy knowing they gave their best and tried their hardest. We tried to teach them to have confidence no matter the outcome. Eventually the day came when our kids laced up their sneakers and had the chance to give it all they have. It was the first track meet for many of them and the entire team of 30 kids handled it very well. Track meets as I am sure many of you know are extremely long days and for young kids that can be very hard. The team all hung tough, competed in their events and finished with smiles. It was amazing to see all young athletes performing that day from many schools across the city. It made me think back to my childhood and how much I would have enjoyed the sport of track and field. Maybe I was too involved in some other sports that my parents didn’t ask if I was interested or it wasn’t offered at my school or in my town. Now there are so many great organizations out there getting kids moving and teaching them important life lessons about believing in themselves. Girls on the Run, Let Me Run and Apex Fun Run are just to name a few. There are also many area track teams for young kids as are annually on display at the Festival of Miles. If you or your child are interested please consider getting involved. Many local programs are run by volunteers and adults and kids get a lot out of the experience.

News and notes from the St. Louis running scene. by Donna Springer SLTC Member Among the Survivors at Race for the Cure The 19th Annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in St. Louis drew 469 competitive finishers downtown the morning of June 10th. Non-competitive walkers, runners and families brought the numbers into the thousands. Pink shirts and decorations flooded the city in a spirit of camaraderie. Seventy-five percent of the funds raised from this event remain in the Saint Louis area. The funds support education, helping persons dealing with breast cancer, and research. The remaining twenty-five percent supports global initiatives, particularly research. The St. Louis Track Club served an advisory role during the planning of the first Race for the Cure. Breast cancer survivors, wearing dark pink shirts, infused through the ranks of the winners. Jill Burch, 45, first overall survivor, made a strong showing with her 20:48 (6:48 pace) time. SLTC’s Ana Schnizer, a two-time survivor, placed second in her age group. Ana has won her age group at past Race for the Cure events. Pre-race, Ana was interviewed by Kay Quinn of Channel 5. Ana encouraged regular mammograms and checkups by persons of all ages. Global Running Day Recap Wednesday June 7th was Global Running Day and Fleet Feet stores across the nation partnered with Brooks to host USATF-certified 5k races in their communities, using the theme. “Locally run, nationally one.” More than 500 St. Louisans convened at Lakeside Park in St. Peters. A scenic run, music by the Delicious Fishes, beer from iTap, Gus's pretzels, nachos from The Nacho Pit, and Sia's Italian Ice created a festive scene. Local results were combined with nationwide results to determine national rankings. Andrew Webster placed first among 362 men at the park (16:31 time), earning him a #4 national rank.; Amy Marxkors placed first among the 214 women, ninth overall (20:22 time) ranking her 143rd nationally in her age group.

In Memory of Vernon Pumm The St. Louis Track Club extends its condolences to the family and friends of long-time member Vernon “Vern” Pumm who passed away June 3rd.” Five days earlier, Vern had placed third in his age group at the University City Memorial Day 5K. Vern and his wife, Barb, participated in scores of races in and around Saint Louis, and frequented the Saint Louis Track Club’s Pace Series in Forest Park. A professional matchmaker got Vernon Pumm and Barbara (Cook) together in 1994. Vern was an accountant for Gundaker Realty in St. Louis County; Barb was a physical education instructor in Waltonville, Ill. "We had a lot in common," Vern told Harry L. Jackcon, during an interview for St. Louis Post-Dispatch, in a 2010 interview. A telephone romance grew, and Vern and Barb married on Valentine's Day, 1998.

(Photo by Dawn Majors, St, Louis Post-Dispatch)

One of the couple’s common interests was fitness. Vern had started running in 1985 when his blood pressure started rising along with his weight. "Of all the things people suggested, running was the easiest," he said. In 1985, Vernon ran his first race, The American Cancer Society Westport 5K, at age 43. “After a couple of years of dropping weight and improving health, he was hooked on running. By 1993 he was entering a minimum of 100 competitive races a year — mostly 5K, 10K and an occasional halfmarathon — on average, two races each weekend. Barbara began to accompany him on his races. "I got tired of sitting in the car waiting for him. I was getting bored, " Barb said. In 1994, Barbara was 49 when she ran the Fourth of July VP Fair 3K. They ran their first race together in 1994” “In 1999, both retired from their jobs and took advantage of the free time to expand the geography of their competitive running. They spent the winter at their home in Phoenix, and summers in St. Louis. Vernon has competed in eight marathons; Barbara, seven. They ran their last marathon in January 2004. They are members of the St. Louis Track Club and the Southern Arizona Roadrunners. They have matching roadrunner tattoos on their ankles. By September of 2010, Vernon had run in 2,229 races; Barbara had run in 1,718 races. They were often able to run two races a week, once hitting more than 130 in one year.” .(Harry L. Jackson, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, September 1, 2010) Don Denham, Co-director of the Saint Louis Track Club Pace Runs, attended Vernon Pumm’s Memorial Service at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Des Peres, June 10th. The front of the program from the service pictured a road extending into the distance, and the scripture from 1 Corinthians 9:25 read “Run for the prize, that will last forever.”

In addition to Barbara, Vernon Pumm is survived by his son, Kevin, his daughter-in-law, Lynn, his daughter, Karen Pack, his grandchildren Amy Pumm, Julie and Stephen Pack, and his sister, Joyce Pumm. Memorial contributions may be made to The American Cancer Society . ” I would like to thank everyone for their kindness they have shown,” Barbara said. Vernon Pumm’s kindness, determination, and quiet sense of humor will be long- remembered. http://www.stltoday.com/lifestyles/health-med-fit/fitness/couple-run-to-each-other-and-keepgoing/article_614066b1-e54d-5655-8e43-ea7152c9f4bd.html http://www.stltoday.com/lifestyles/health-med-fit/more-on-vernon-and-barbarapumm/article_7c324dc4-0248-52d3-bd87-b680e8cb3672.html Past Board Member Travels to Washington DC Carl Specking, a former Vice President of the St. Louis Track Club Board and longtime Track Club member, traveled a memorable course May 27th. As a Veteran, he was awarded an “Honor Flight” to and from Washington D.C.. Veterans from all over the United States may apply for an Honor Flight. Each veteran has a “guardian,” who has completed training to assist the veteran during the trip. The St. Louis contingency included 22 veterans, who traveled in a special section of a Southwest Airlines flight. Carl’s daughter, Nancy, who lives in California, completed the training, and joined Carl in St. Louis. Carl, his family, including his wife, Mary, who has Parkinson’s Disease, and some friends gathered at the airport at 4:30 a.m. the Saturday morning of Memorial Day weekend. A chartered bus met the flight in Washington, D.C., and police escorts cleared the traffic for the bus during a whirlwind tour. ‘We got VIP service,” Carl said Sights on the tour included the World War II Memorial, The Korean War Memorial, The Vietnam Memorial Wall and the Changing of the Guard at Arlington National Cemetery. Although the return flight was delayed, Carl arrived home by the end of the day. “It was an honor,” Carl said. Publication of Carl’s flight brought him 125 letters commending his service during the Korean War. As of June 18th, he was still poring through the letters. Some were from family and friends, others were from unknown persons. Veterans interested in “honor flights” may find information at https://gslhonorflight.org/. World War II veterans are given priority due to their age.

St. Louis Track Club Supports Ferguson Twilight Run The 8th Annual Ferguson Twilight Run, 5k/10K, Untimed, and One-mile Fun Runs drew a robust crowd Saturday evening May 20th. SLTC runners who “took home” hardware included Angela Holden, Shaunta Pleasant, Denise Buehrer, Rae Mohrmann, John Harwell and Sue Turner. The Ferguson Twilight Run began in 2010 to “encourage an increase in physical activity through active living.” The routes include residential and business areas of Ferguson, and offer rolling hills, and strategically placed school bands. The St. Louis Track Club was among the sponsors including the St. Louis Chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC-STL). The ACC-STL, which serves more than 500 in-house lawyer members in the St. Louis metropolitan and southern Illinois areas, brought a team, and partnered with Beveridge & Diamond, P.C., to offer food and beverages to members and the community. More than two dozen inhouse counsel and their families registered to walk and run, and then gathered together under the ACC St. Louis Team tent, where they celebrated with runners and walkers of all ages and fitness levels/ The Chapter welcomed Veta Richardson, from Washington D.C , President and CEO of the Association of Corporate Counsel, , She had previously spent some time in Dubai making some groundbreaking arrangements..(stlamerican.com, June 13, 2017) SLTC Board Member, Rae Mohrmann, a longtime resident of Ferguson, ran the 10K with friends from Kirkwood and Ladue. ‘Ferguson is a really nice place,” one of her friends commented during the race. Rae encouraged her friends to come back to Ferguson, to enjoy dining at the restaurants. Rae placed first in her age group in the 10K. Complete results are available at bigriverrunning.com. Berryman Race Recap Persons at the Open Meeting of the SLTC June 20th included Lois Berkowitz, President and newsletter editor of the 50 State Marathon Club’s newsletter, and editor of the Toledo (Ohio) Roadrunners Club’s Footprints. Lois had been recovering at The Quarters at DesPeres after fracturing her femur while running the Berryman Trail Marathon on May 20th. Lois did not fall, but heard a “pop” in her upper thigh, A helicopter transported her from the side of the trail to Mercy Hospital, where she received emergency treatment, followed by a hospital stay. She returned home June 22nd. Lois, 68, has a running log which includes 432 marathons. “There are a bunch of fine marathons in Ohio,” Lois said, encouraging St. Louis Track Club members to travel in her direction. " The 18th Annual Berryman Trail Run was held was held on the Ozark / Berryman Trail near Potosi, MO, on May 20th, hosted by the St. Louis Ultrarunners Group, “reported Race Director David White.. “The race had 150 participants, approximately half in the marathon, and half in the 50- mile. There was an apprehensive mood in the air for the 6:30 a.m. start of the 50, as there was a severe thunderstorm in the area. The storm passed shortly, and the rest of the day was dry and sunny. The trail conditions continued to improve through the day-- and a high finish rate of runners was experienced.”

“The Berryman Trail Run has become the one of the most popular trail ultra- marathons in the Midwest through the years, attracting runners from all over the United States and many foreign countries. Race entry opens in January and usually sells out months in advance. The popularity is due to the quality of volunteers we have had through the years, and the great support of the St. Louis Ultrarunners Group, St. Louis Track Club and various other clubs, “ David said David & Victoria White, the race directors for the last 16 years, will be passing the director duties on to someone else after this year. They wish to thank everyone who ran or volunteered through the years to make the race what it has become. They plan to remain involved with the race in the future, but in a less official capacity. The St. Louis Ultrarunners Group welcomes everyone to join us next year for a real wilderness and excellent trail running experience. National Senior Games St. Louis’s Dottie Gray, 92, was quoted on page 84 of June 2017’s Runners World, describing her experiences in senior running, relating to the National Senior Games in Birmingham, Alabama June 2nd through 15th. Dottie has competed in each of the National Senior Games competition since their beginning in 1987, and competed in seven events this year, ranging in distance from the 50-meter sprint to the 5000 meter run, which she ran the evening before she returned to St. Louis. The National Senior Games or "Senior Olympics" offer multi-sport competitions to adults aged 50-plus from throughout the United States. . Events are divided into age groups with five-year intervals, which Dottie said that she particularly appreciates. Regional competitions are held yearly in all American states. Every two years, nationwide events, the National Senior Olympics (Games) are held in varying locations. The first Senior Olympics took place in 1987 and attracted 2,500 people. By 2007 The National Senior Games, in Louisville, Kentucky participation increased to over 10,000 competitors and 20,000 spectators. St. Louis, Washington, D.C., Ohio, Birmingham, or anywhere on-course, The Saint Louis Track Club wishes you the best. Share your news with Dsprin5574@aol.com, or office@stlouistrackclub.com.
