The Grapevine By Donna Springer

Susan and Sophia Racette pursue lofty goals this fall Best wishes to Susan Racette as she recovers from a bicycle crash earlier this summer. Although she is still recovering, she has been able to resume her active lifestyle with a variety of daily workouts and hopes to return to the racing scene in 2016. Her running history includes standout performances during the Saint Louis Track Club Road Series, Frostbite Series, and at the University City Memorial Day Run. Susan has raced and trained in Forest Park with her daughter Sophia, who recently graduated from Nerinx Hall High School. The weekend of August 15, Susan and her husband Brad flew to Los Angeles with Sophia to drop her off at the University of Southern California, where she is beginning her freshman year as a Trojan. Sophia has achieved recognition for her cross-country running at the Saint Louis Track Club’s Annual Banquet and for Track Running at the Festival of Miles. A Track Club member participating in a research study saw Susan at Washington University School of Medicine this August. Susan and her research team have been conducting a health surveillance project in St. Louis city, as part of the City of St. Louis Department of Health’s Obesity Plan. The Obesity Plan includes the goal of reducing obesity throughout St. Louis. The aim of the surveillance is to determine the prevalence of obesity (and overweight) among city residents, by ZIP code and by neighborhood, from measurements of height and weight. Par-

ticipants also answer survey questions and then receive exercise encouragement based on the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, and dietary advice based on the USDA’s ChooseMyPlate.gov. Results of the surveillance project will provide valuable information for the Department of Health as they continue to implement wellness initiatives throughout the city. Best wishes to both Sophia and Susan this fall!

Volleyball game results in knee injury for Bob Bellora Longtime Saint Louis Track Club member Bob Bellora has been dealing with a running injury since he dislocated his left knee during a volleyball game. Although the joint “popped back into place,” Bob found out he’d torn three of the four ligaments holding the femur to the tibia and had over-stretched and pulled one abductor muscle. Bob volunteered at the finish line of the Pace Run on Aug. 26. He has been running races almost weekly for 46 years, and was a Meramec varsity cross country team member in 1974 and 1975. He was a varsity cross country runner at the University of Missouri - Rolla in 1976 and 1977, where he finished Bachelor and Masters degrees in Electrical and Electronics Engineering. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Saint Louis Track Club, and has directed numerous events. Let’s hope to see Bob running on the courses before too long.

Club News & Notes

The 36th Annual St. Louis Half Marathon and Clayton Police 5K will be Sunday, Nov. 1. We need over 150 volunteers to make this event a success. Volunteering is a great way to give back to the club, meet other members and volunteers, and cheer on a friend at the race, all while supporting the Special Olympics. We need volunteers for set up on Friday, set up and packet pick up on Saturday, and packet pick up, course marshals, water station, finish line and clean up on Sunday. We are very flexible with scheduling. Please go to http://www.stlouistrackclub.com/half-marathon/volunteer/ to review volunteer assignments and sign up directly online, or you can contact Christy Polk at christy.polk@ stlouistrackclub.com or call the office at 314-781-3926. Come help make this year’s race a success! We want to hear from you!

Tell us about your accomplishments. Whether it’s your first 5k or a marathon PR, we want to know about it! Submit race recaps and photos to editor@stlouistrackclub.com

Preparation for the Corps of Discovery and St Louis Half Marathon were covered. The Cross Country Kickoff event was recapped. Filling the Media Manager position was discussed and an offer will be made. A proposal for involvement in a youth event was reviewed. Final details of the Frostbite series registration were decided and should be open soon; this year’s premium registration item is a custom SLTC Orange Mud towel. Volunteers are needed for the half. The link to the sign up page is posted on the website. We are seeking a volunteer coordinator for the half and frostbite series. This person is an integral part of making sure these events run smoothly. They would be responsible for making sure all volunteer positions are filled and communicating with volunteers. Contact the office if interested. We will have a booth at the cowbell expo. See us there or contact the office to volunteer at our booth. Hours and location here. http://www. mocowbellmarathon.com/fitness-exmo/ We are looking for interested parties to offer homestays for elite athletes coming in for the half. Anyone interested in hosting an athlete should contact the office. The next price increase on the half happens 9/22. We are looking for ambassadors for the half also. An ambassador will be expected to actively promote the event on social media and in the running community. They will receive a complementary race entry in return. Contact the office if interested.
