President’s Column
Stay motivated and inspired this season! St. Louis Track Club Members, Greetings! Cross country and fall racing seasons are upon us! Even if you do not enjoy racing, this is the perfect time of year for getting out and just enjoying a run or walk in the great weather. Last weekend kicked off the marathon and half marathon season with the MO’ Cowbell. While I did not run, I was down there cheering many of my friends who ran the 5k, half, and full marathons. Congrats to all the finishers, including the marathon winner, SLTC Premier team member, Travis Lavin!
ning month for me personally. First, while I qualified for Boston in April, I was notified that my time fell short of the cut. Additionally, a foot injury will likely keep me from running for some time. While I’m pretty bummed out about both, runners persevere and I will be certain to draw motivation from others! I plan to catch up with everyone at the various social events, including Monday, Oct. 20, at Schlafly Tap Room downtown! Additionally, I’ll be out cheering everyone on at the St. Louis Half Marathon and the Marathon Relay, both in November.
Speaking of the half marathon, we are a month away from the SLTC’s very own St. Louis Spectating and seeing the passion of others will be the motivation I need to return healthy Half Marathon and 5k. There will be some and better than ever! competitive runners in this year’s race; I’m That’s all for now, stay safe out there and enexpecting to see some overall and age group joy the fall weather. records go down! While the weather has improved and fall race season is upon us, it’s been a tough run-

Rain delays start of Heart of America Marathon Fifty-state marathoner, Rae Mohrmann, brought back a report from the Heart of America Marathon, in Columbia, Mo., on Labor Day. “Labor Day was the 55th running, and the first time they had rain! Usually, we just deal with the three big H’s: Heat, Hills, and Humidity. But this year, it stormed for hours in the early morning, and the start was delayed an hour.” “When we began at 7 a.m., we had drizzle and a big headwind that almost forced us to take flight. After a few miles, however, the weather somewhat cleared. Things settled down and it was a pleasant 70s day. Unheard of for this race! “Area runners included Dave Dobkowski, Ron Golan, Bruce Edwards, Mitch Neuhaus, Mark Oppenheim, Brooke Sloss, and me, the oldest person in the race.” “After the finish in downtown Columbia, everyone gathers at Shakespeare’s Pizza for pizza and awards. This is traditionally a small, no frills, inexpensive entry race, but lots of fun; 180 runners this year.” Rae is looking for people to be a part of her 100th marathon. It will be the GO! Saint Louis 2015. “I want 100 people to run with me. I am making my list and don’t want to miss anyone!” Rae said. Another Saint Louis area runner at The Heart
of America Marathon was Denis McCarthy. When Garrett Bergquist, of KRCG, Columbia, interviewed Denis, he expressed gratefulness for the cooler weather, and the city’s reception of the runners.
Leadville 100 tests runners’ mental and physical strength Jim Wright “crewed” for his son, Chris, during his fourth running of the Leadville Trail 100 in Colorado on Aug. 22. Race organizers allow each runner to have a crew person for support during the last 50 miles of the 100-mile event, with rest stops placed approximately every 13 miles. “It’s a different world, that long distance — on trails,” Jim said. “There are rocks, cliffs, and streams knee-deep with cold mountain water. It’s a challenge running that difficult of a course in the dark of night. You can drive 12 miles down a gravel road, and, there’s no cell phone service. One spot, Hope Pass, elevation 12,600 feet, you can not get to by car. People bring in supplies by llamas and on foot.” At each stop, Jim helped Chris with his nutrition, changing clothes, and by making sure he was hydrated. The temperatures ranged from mid-40s to close to 80 degrees, requiring much adaptation on the part of each runner. “Also, being awake for 50-plus hours is not easy,” Jim said. Jim joined the Saint Louis Track Club during the early 1980s, when he began running. He

introduced Chris, now 42, to running via the Frostbite Series. The Leadville 100 dates from 1983 and is billed as “The Race Across the Sky.” The course offers “lush green forests, flowing streams, and views of Turquoise Lake.” About 800 runners began the course this year; about 360 finished. The overall winner was Rob Krar, time: 16:09:31.
Mariana Salinas reps the SLTC in Stockholm, Sweden Mariana Salinas expanded her running repertoire with some runs in Stockholm, Sweden, this summer. She made a point of wearing her Saint Louis Track Club T-shirt when she visited her brother in Warsaw, Poland, en route. “Never too far to represent The Saint Louis Track Club,” she said. Mariana made a mark on the Saint Louis running scene as well. At the concluding picnic for the Summer Pace Series, she won an award for placing 12th overall for the season, as well as placing 8th for the month of September. Whether it’s your 55th, 100th, or first-running — in Sweden, Colorado, Saint Louis, or anywhere in between, The Saint Louis Track Club wishes you the best.

Will Run for Food
Upgrade your carb game with home fries It’s officially fall, and that means RACING SEASON. If you’re gearing up for a distance race, especially a half or full marathon, your diet is probably focused on one thing: carbs, carbs, and more carbs. As much as runners are notorious for consuming impressive amounts of pizza and pasta, you can only take so much before you hit your limit. Enter: potatoes. They’re cheap, full of carbs, and versatile. This easy seasoned home fries recipe can be used for a variety of carb-rich meals. I love them as the base of a breakfast skillet topped with cheese, bacon and an over easy egg; as a French fry alternative with ketchup; or piled with chili, cheese, and onions for dinner. When you get the hang of the original recipe, shake things up by adding peppers and onions or trading out regular potatoes for sweet potatoes! The possibilities are endless. Ingredients (serves 4) 3 large russet potatoes 4 TBSP oil of choice (olive or canola work great) 1 TBSP chili powder 1 TBSP seasoned salt 1 TBSP onion powder 1 TBSP garlic powder 1 TBSP paprika Cayenne pepper, to taste Black pepper, to taste
My personal favorite: Home fries topped with extra sharp cheddar, crumbled bacon, and an over easy egg. Yum.
1. Wash and scrub your potatoes (you can peel them if desired, but I prefer them skin on). Dice into bite-sized cubes. Submerge the cut potatoes in ice cold water for at least 10 minutes, preferable 30-60. This removes the extra starch from the potato and makes for crispier home fries. 2. Drain the potatoes and rinse thoroughly. Pat dry with a paper towel; you really want to remove the extra moisture, again for crispness. 3. Pour your oil into a frying pan or skillet and crank the heat to high until the oil simmers when you sprinkle water in it. Throw in your potatoes in an
even layer and toss to coat in oil. 4. While your potatoes are cooking, evenly sprinkle all of the spices on top and toss the potatoes again to evenly distribute them. 5. Allow the potatoes to cook for 10-15 minutes, tossing them in the skillet every 3 or 4 minutes to prevent them from sticking and allow them to cook evenly. 6. When the outsides look crispy and you can pierce the potatoes with a fork, they’re ready to go! Mound on your favorite toppings and go to town! -Sallie Story

BOARD SPOTS OPEN FOR 2015
Want to help guide the Track Club’s direction? Think your big idea could make the club thrive? Then submit your profile and tell us a little about who you are and why you’d like to be included on the ballot for the board of directors election. There are four open positions; anyone interested in serving should contact the office@stlouistracklub.com or one of the current board members.
The 35th Annual St. Louis Half Marathon and Clayton Police 5K will be Sunday, Nov. 2. We need over 150 volunteers to make this event a success. Volunteering is a great way to give back to the club, meet other members and volunteers, and cheer on a friend at the race, all while supporting the Special Olympics. Our biggest need is for course marshals and we also need volunteers for set up on Friday, set up and packet pick up on Saturday, and packet pick up, course marshals, water station, finish line and clean up on Sunday. We are very flexible with scheduling. Please go to http://www.signupgenius.com/ go/10c0c4ca4aa22a4fa7-20141 to review volunteer assignments and sign up directly online, or you can contact Christy Polk at christy.polk@ stlouistrackclub.com or call the office at 314781-3926. Come help make this year’s race a success!
Marathon through STL (and a few sliders) makes for a great birthday celebration By Mike Orrico ••• Everyone has a birthday… Or at least, that’s what I think. Last year was a big birthday for me: a new running age group! This year, turning 36 on a Wednesday seemed somewhat “blah,” so I wanted to think of a way to turn a boring Wednesday into a fun birthday party for myself. About 7 days before the big day, I decided I would take off work and run a marathon around the city I love. I have always wanted to run a mid-week marathon. My running buddy Sean and I have talked about the idea for a few years. Unfortunately, Sean was going to be out of town for work, so I decided to rope another friend, Mark, into my adventure. The next day, I marked out my course. The starting line would be a Forest Park, and the plan was to hit some
local sites around the city. I drew up a map for Mark and myself with Points of Interest; they included: Forest Park, Urban Chestnut, the Grove, Tower Grove, Compton Heights Water Tower, Lafayette Square, Soulard, AB, the WC Lounge (White Castle), Busch Stadium, The Marquette (my old home), the Stan Span, the Arch, the Old Cathedral, Wash Ave and Tigin. Yes, you read that correctly, Whities. I wanted to stop there for a few sliders, and we did. Other than a funny look from the lady behind the counter, the sliders hit the spot at mile 16. The run itself was great; we took our time, finishing in 3 hours and 46 minutes and really enjoyed the day. We snapped a bunch of pictures along the way and even met a Shetland pony named Sheffield. We ended at Tigin on Wash Ave just in time for some lunch and a pint. I think I may have created a new tradition for
Page 19
myself. If this kind of thing appeals to you and you have a birthday, which I bet you do, then give it a try. I promise you will have fun!

What, if anything, can I do to this question you will get 10 different make her feel better? - Annie S. answers. With that being said, I would A: Great question Annie! This is a vote for 10 days to 2 weeks. You want tough thing, as you always want your to continue to give your body what it running buddies feeling great. Not wants while letting your legs recovonly because that’s what runners do, ered enough for the race. If you are but you may tend to lean on them feeling fatigued the weeks leading up with your own running. I would not to the taper, maybe add some more bask in your own running and racing time. I do like continue to keep my glory when talking to her but rather “sea legs” by doing short marathon focus more on her recovery. Ask her pace runs during the taper as well. what she’s currently doing, PT, doctor, Also, I find going to a local running etc? Good luck! something to focus on getting healthy Q: Hey Styles, if you had one bucket list race what would it be? - Bill K. A: The next one! Haha. You know I have never really given that much thought. I have a few I would really like to do, but the only real bucket list run I have is to run the Grand Canyon. I do have a good friend who ran the Boston Marathon with his son, and I thought that was the
for. Do what you would want done for you if the tables were turned.
Disclaimer: Styles is not a professional. He is a just a guy that likes to run… every day… sometimes twice. For professional help, please contact a running coach, local running store, physician, and of course the Google.
