Give back to the SLTC by volunteering!
St. Louis Track Club Members, Volunteering is generally considered an altruistic activity and is intended to promote good or improve human quality of life. In return, this activity can produce a feeling of self-worth and respect. There is no financial gain involved. Volunteering is also renowned for skill development, socialization, and fun. (from Wikipedia)
a terrific job of making this race happen. Thank you to all the Clifton Heights 3K volunteers, including Race Director Jill Akins. The 3K runners, walkers, and volunteers enjoyed the festivities of the Clifton Heights Party in the Park after the race. Combining the two events proved to be successful.
There are many benefits associated to volunteering. Just ask our volunteers from recent events.
If you missed out on the above volunteer opportunities, we still have something for you! We are still in need of volunteers for the St. Louis Track Club Half Marathon and 5K on Nov. 2 and 3.
Thank you to the volunteers who helped with I Love Forest Park 5K. The support you gave to us to help Forest Park Forever is very much appreciated. Forest Park is an integral part of The St. Louis Track Club’s history.
To find a volunteer position, go to our website and click on the Half Marathon/5K Volunteer Registration details at: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0C4CA4AA22A4FA7-stlouis or http://stlouistrackclub.com.
Thanks to all the volunteers who made the inaugural Corps of Discovery Trail Race a big success.
Volunteering can be rewarding and fun. It is a great way to meet new people and to give back.

George Pugh completes second 50-state half marathon challenge Continuing congratulations to St. Louis Track Club member and 50-state half marathon finisher, George Pugh. George completed the second challenge of the 50-State Half Marathon Club goal – 100 hundred total half marathons – when he successfully finished the Virginia Beach Rock ’n’ Roll Half Marathon on September 1st. George has been busy in 2013. As of August, he had completed 15 half marathons toward the 100 total challenge. Recent events included half marathons in Flagstaff, Ariz.; Spokane, Wash.; Beaverton, Ore.; Vail, Colo.; Kansas City, Mo.; and San Francisco, Calif. “What’s next you might ask?” George wondered at the middle of August. He’d heard about a challenge of five half marathons in five days during September – The Center of the Nation Half Marathon Challenge, including marathons in North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, and Nebraska. He did the five half-marathons in five days, and was intact and coherent afterward.
Rae Mohrmann breaks record at Heart of America Marathon At the Heart of America Marathon in Columbia Mo., Rae Mohrmann broke her own age group 65-69 state resident’s record with her 4:19:14 time, 9:54 pace. “Great job!” reported Mike Lundgren, Missouri state records keeper. “This is one of the toughest courses around because it has lots of the big 3 ‘H’s’ – heat, hills and, humidity,” Rae said. “We were so fortunate to have
the weather cool off for Monday. It is a small race – almost 300 entries, 237 finishers this year – no frills, started in 1960. The people who started it are still involved. Joe Duncan is the heart and soul. “We started near the stadium at 6 a.m., in the dark, all of us wearing little red blinking lights. We ran down Providence Road for about 7 miles – headed out of town. We then ran for the next 8 or so miles on a gravel road, some of it along the river. While the course map indicates six major hill areas, the entire course is quite hilly. This is a race for those who just love to run. There are very few spectators, but the peacefulness of being out in nature is fulfilling. The course is pretty much a loop. Heading back to town one again passes the stadium, and ends downtown. Awards are at Shakespeare’s Pizza, also downtown. “St Louis’ own Daniel Stults was second overall with a time of 2:42:11. Noted St. Louis great Dave Dobkowski ran for the 27th year in a row; Julie Begfeld, Ron Golan, Mark Oppenheim, Bruce Edwards, Chad Lane, Jim Gunderson, and Chris Allen were also among the group of St. Louis runners. It was great to look around and see SLTC singlets,” Rae said. Rae is one of SLTC’s 50-state marathoners, and is obviously still in the running.
Michelob Ultra Runners have great showings at the BIX 7 The Michelob Ultra Runners are gearing up for a fall of marathons, half marathons, 10ks, 5ks, and things above, below, or in between. One summer event was the BIX 7 in the Quad Cities this July.

“The weather was the best in their 39 years – 56 degrees at the start,” Jan Daker said. “Lots of good news to report: Bryan Glass got 1st in his age group again, even though he is at the tail-end of the group age-wise. Joy Guardia blew away the competition in the 35 to 39 age group … incredible finish. I got first for 65 to 69, so I was a very happy finisher. Chris Haydel and Chris Wujcik did extremely well time-wise, as did Emily Fletcher. “You couldn’t wipe the smiles off our faces after we completed the 7-mile, all-hill run. We went as a group to thank the distributor at the after race party. “On Friday,” Jan added, “we arrived in time to stop in at the Elite/Volunteer luncheon. When the luncheon breaks up, everyone has an opportunity to talk to any of the elites present. This is one of the rare times where you can have a one-on-one conversation with them. My favorite is Meb [Keflezighi], so [I] talked with him a bit; Bill Rodgers is always fun to chat with. This time I got to speak with Desiree [Davila], an Olympian trained by the Hanson Brothers group. I have followed her for a while, so it was fascinating to be able to ask her questions. She is coming back from an injury, so [she] only got eighth at the BIX. (OK, I’m basically star-struck at this event since these are many of the people featured in my favorite running publications). “We stay, for free, at a local college with the elites. Again, it’s an opportunity to mingle. Joy and I stayed with the Japanese women and the one Russian. We encountered the Russian woman sitting at the table walking an African male runner through lots of paperwork helping him with his English. Plus, English would not be her first language. It was interesting to watch the dynamics between the elite runners. “After the race, while cleaning up at the college dorms for the awards ceremony, I heard a large commotion outside. Evidently some of the American elites had brought their families over to the college and they held their family award ceremony. They told me they always ask last year’s women’s winner to hand out their family awards;

just touching, and a different way of connecting globally. Our entire group just felt that many more would enjoy the BIX experience, although we may neglect to add that, normally, the weather for the all-hill 7-mile course is 85% humidity with matching heat!” Jan expressed kudos to Bryan for organizing the BIX event. “He never misses a beat in taking good care of us,” she said.
Ruth Hanebrink returns to the marathon distance after 31 years Another September marathoner was Ruth Hanebrink, who ran the Big Cottonwood Marathon in Salt Lake City September 14. “This was my second marathon,” she said. “My first was the 1982 St. Louis Marathon, yes, nearly 31 years ago.” Ruth’s finish time was 4:45:38, 10:54 pace per mile. The course involved roads and paved running paths. Runners descended Big Cottonwood Canyon and finished at Cottonwood High School. Web-posted writeups noted that the net downhill of 5,300 feet for the marathon course improved oxygen saturation levels as the runners descended into the canyon. There were 569 men and 724 women who completed the marathon. The overall female winner, Danya Crawford, edged out her nearest competitor, who was male, by more than three minutes.
Beautiful scenery at annual Alaska Salmon Runs events “We can now confirm: Alaska is really beautiful… and we only saw a small part of it,” said Michelob Ultra Runner Jeff Bockhorn. A Michelob Ultra Runners contingency attended the Alaska Salmon Runs Marathon in Cordova, Alaska, the last weekend in July. Events included the King Salmon Marathon, the Sockeye Half-Marathon, The Coho 10K, Humpy 5K, and the One-Mile Smolt Fun Run/Walk. The runs were part of the “Copper River Wild!” festival that honors the area’s salmon industry.

“There were 39 finishers of the marathon distance and our group, nine runners, was 23% of it,” Jeff said. “We were dropped off 26 miles outside of town and ran back to town. The course was flat as a pancake, and the first 15 miles were on a wide gravel road. There were three un-manned water stops till mile 16, where there was an older man and a beautiful 1950s truck. There were no spectators, but the rivers crossing the road and the mountains and glaciers along the way were very scenic. “Mark Volkmann won his first marathon, (3:03:23) beating two much younger runners who were the favorites. Patty Jansen had a bad, day so Lindsey (Phelps) picked up the pace and won her first marathon as well (3:56:32)! Patty came in third (4:16:24).” Jeff was sick with pneumonia and was wheezing and coughing, but he struggled and finished. The son of Michelob Ultra Runners newsletter editor Ron Golanon found out the “hurt” way that you really need to train and taper before a marathon, as the last 13 miles were a struggle. Pam Campbell ran the half-marathon, and was the second overall female of 16 finishers in 1:49:44. “We all had a great time!” Jeff said. “Those of us left behind were quite envious,” said Michelob Ultra Runner Jan Daker.
5th Annual Billiken 5k continues to grow with record 400 participants A growing race on the Saint Louis scene is the Billiken 5K. This Labor Day, a record 400 runners participated in the fifth annual event, in which the athletics department at Saint Louis University partners with the SLU Cancer Center to raise money for cancer research. Seventy track and field student athletes from Saint Louis University volunteered. The course loops around the Saint Louis University campus and crossed the new Grand Avenue bridge this year.
October 2013
“The day was beautiful,” Patricia Cornell commented. ”The bridge crossing, perfect, and lots of very young people participated.” One notable participant was Ed Heigl, who is undergoing chemotherapy. He is a longtime runner and a veteran member of the SLTC. SLTC’s Mariana Salinas said she enjoyed the race. Her time of 27 minutes 31 seconds placed her second among the 40 to 44 women’s age group.
Walking Rambler Sue Turner has a packed day, lands on the news Walking Rambler Alison Bourey noted that Sue Turner was a “Media Star” when she appeared on the Channel 4 and Channel 5 telecasts of the 9-11 March to the Arch. Sue’s March to the Arch was one of three walking ventures that day. “I didn’t do the whole (21-mile) thing,” Sue explained. “I’d had a Ten Toe Express (Citizens for Modern Transit) walk across Eads Bridge, around Laclede’s Landing, followed by lunch, and a walk up Washington Avenue (that morning). Mary Jones and Gerardette Groll were there, too. I took Metro home, quickly changed clothes, and drove to Forest Park. Then I walked the bike path down Lindell to Skinker to meet the March group near Forsyth, and I walked with them to SLU, east of Grand, where I turned around so I could get back to Forest Park by 5:30 for the (SLTC) Pace Race. It was 4.2 miles. I was 6 minutes slow, and it felt like a marathon. The humidity was absolutely stifling. My mileage for the day was 16 to 17 miles but today, I’m all recovered,” Sue commented Sept. 12. The Walking Ramblers (atbourey@earthlink. net), the Ten Toe Express (info@cmt-stl.org) and the Saint Louis Track Club (www.stlouistrackclub. com), are among the resources for Saint Louis walkers who seek variety and camaraderie. Sue has experience with all three of these groups. Whether walking, running, volunteering, or spectating in Missouri, another one of the fifty states, or outside U.S. borders, the Saint Louis Track Club wishes you the best.
