President’s Column

Congrats to Rae on her 100th marathon St. Louis Track Club Members, Greetings, I hope everyone is having a great spring so far. Aside from the start of baseball season, one of my favorite things about April is the Boston Marathon. While it was not as exciting for the Americans this year, it was a great race in Boston despite the weather. Although Meb was not able to pull off the same magic this year, he did have a top 10, one place behind Dathan Ritzenhein. And, the women’s race was particularly exciting, with only 4 seconds separating Caroline Rotich and Mare Dibaba. For the Americans, both Desi and Shalane finished in the top 10. Perhaps a more impressive feat than those running Boston happened right here in our own town at the Go! St. Louis Marathon. Rae Mohrmann completed her 100th marathon

at the April 12 race, an incredible accomplishment! Many of Rae’s friends ran or jumped in near the finish to cross the line with her, it was truly exciting to hear the PA announcer shouting for Rae and the pack as she neared the finish! Congratulations, Rae, on the great accomplishment and thanks for letting me be a part of it! Lastly, as we head into the warmer months, I hope to see everyone at Schlafly and other social events. We are working on a fun event for June, so look for the details on the website or upcoming newsletters! Until next time, keep putting one foot in front of the other! Rae Mohrmann snags age group win with 100th marathon finish At least one GO! St. Louis marathoner had a monumental experience. Rae Mohrmann completed her 100th marathon Sunday morning, April 12. Rae’s supporters could wear ribbons proclaiming #100 Rae and had a chance to purchase a T-shirt. The T-shirts were a surprise to Rae, masterminded by her son, Gregg, and daughter-in-law, Kara. Rae looked none the worse for the wear at a celebration buffet Sunday evening at Unity Lutheran Church, in Bel Nor, North County. Rae placed first in her age group with her 4:35.36 time. As a longtime resident of Ferguson, Missouri, she was profiled running on KSDK news March 25th, wishing peace and rebuilding for her town. Other media exposure included Jason Aubry’s on April 12, Mike Columbo’s on April 10, and on KWMU radio April 2.

100 Missouri Miles Challenge kicks off in Jefferson City April 15 brought the kick-off of 100 Missouri Miles Challenge at 5:30 p.m. at the North Jefferson Trailhead on the KATY Trail, off Hwy 54, Jefferson City. Governor Nixon, the First Lady and First Dog, Huck started this year’s challenge, then led a mile hike celebrating the trail’s 25th anniversary. Besides hiking with the First Family, walkers could also enjoy vendor booths hosted by this year’s partners, including Bass Pro Shops, Kids on Track, and Special Olympics of Missouri. The Governor’s 100 Missouri Miles Challenge is a fitness initiative inspired after Missouri was named the “Best Trails State” by American Trails, a national, nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting our nation’s hiking, biking and riding trails. Governor Jay Nixon and First Lady Georganne Nixon encourage all Missourians to get outside and to take advantage of the incredible resources found here in the Show-Me State. Missourians can complete “100 Missouri Miles” of physical activity during the year, by running, walking, biking, paddling or rolling. Mileage must be completed within the state of Missouri but residents of any state

may participate. “To sign up for the Governor’s 100 Missouri Miles Challenge go to 100missourimiles.com and select ‘Register’ button at the top of the homepage. You will then be directed to the registration page. After completing the registration form, you will receive an email confirming your registration and further instructions on how to log into the website using your username and password. Persons may log mileage on smartphones toward a commemorative badge. In 2014 Missourians logged over three million miles, which exceeded the challenge goal by nearly 100,000 miles,” reads the website.

Racewalkers’ Club of St. Louis starts spring racing season The Racewalkers’ Club of St. Louis, began its 2015 competitions with its Spring Fling 5k at Pattonville High School on Sunday, April 19. “Despite the terrible downpour, we had a great first race of the season - the 5,000 m USATF Ozark Championship with 21 race walkers, competing in ages ranging from 72 years to 9-year-olds!” said webmaster Lorraine Ramonczuk. “Most of our competitors were local, but a few came down from Chicago.”

wood.” A visit with a niece she hadn’t seen for several years was an added plus for Dottie.

“As part of this race, we will be having an Ozark Association and Regional Championship,” said Coach Tish Hanna. “For the Open National Championship, there will be prize money, as well as additional prize money, as the race is part of the USA Track & Field Grand Prix series. Two of the athletes that will be attending will be Patrick Stroupe, a native of Columbia, MO—a three-time Collegiate National Champion as well as a US National champion and many times national team member, and Alex Chavez—a recent college graduate, two-time Collegiate champion, eight-time All American and eight-plus-time national team member. Alex has chosen to remain in St. Louis to train with me, for the next year, leading up to the Olympics.” “This (10K) is a lead up to next April’s IAAF (the world governing body of track & field) World Cup Team Championship Trials. The team that will be chosen will head to Russia to compete May 7-8. We are running this June’s 10K exactly like we will the World Team Trials.” “We are looking forward to having race walkers from all over the Midwest come to this event,” Lorraine said. The Racewalkers Club of Saint Louis is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the enjoyment and promotion of racewalking, affiliated with the Ozark USATF association. “In a spirit of camaraderie, we share our love of the sport and provide a racewalking community,” the website emphasizes. “Our events are judged by USATF certified judges, in accordance with USATF rules. Races are contested in the youth, masters and open divisions. Our group is for novices who are interested in learning technique, as well as veterans who already walk competitively. We welcome newcomers and walkers of all ages and abilities.” Contact www.racewalkstl.org (Lorraine Ramonczuk, Webmaster).

Dottie Gray receives unique award at 5k at Hilton Head Island Dottie Gray received a unique award from The Mitchelville Freedom Park 5K, Hilton Head Island, South Carolina on April 11. The race prizes were limited to the top three overall females and males, but Dottie, 89, rated an award as the oldest female finisher. “It’s beautiful there—a clean, pretty city, full of trees,” Dottie said. “The award was a piece of a tree, a slice of

Galloping Gourmets welcome spring with a feast at Anthonino’s “Spring time, Earth Day, taxes were over, The GO! St. Louis weekend runs were completed, our Cardinals were out of town (and winning), Passover and Easter were past, recovery from knee and hip surgeries were under way. What more could you possibly ask for?” asked longtime Saint Louis Track Club member, and Galloping Gourmet, Dessie Pashos. “Some of our Galloping Gourmets celebrated on April 22nd by feasting at Anthonino’s Taverna on the Hill. It’s the only Greek-Italian restaurant on the Hill—serving delicious unique Greek-Italian dishes in a warm, family neighborhood atmosphere. The young owners, Anthony and Rosario Scarato, learned the trade well from their parents and grandparents who owned the several Athens Cafes in the St. Louis area for many years.” “Great fun, food and service was enjoyed by all and their smiling faces prove it.” The Galloping Gourmets have enjoyed running, walking, and the Saint Louis cuisine since the late 1980s. Membership is open with nominal cost; contact Alison or Andy Bourey for more information at atbourey@earthlink.net. Team SLTC Premier starts season with strong showings It’s been a busy few months for the Premier team, with many of the crew competing in a variety of races locally. The team opened the spring season at the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade Run in downtown St. Louis, where David Rumsey led the way with a sixth place finish covering the five mile course in 26:17. Chris Loseman, back from a stress fracture last fall, wasn’t far behind finishing in seventh at 26:19 with a strong debut. Jon Koch finished 12th overall in the very deep field with a time of 26:47. After opening on the roads, the focus next shifted to the track where three of the team competed at the Washington University Invite on the March 27. The times were fast, as both Danny Stults and David Rumsey set personal bests running 14:50 and 14:51, respectively. Chris Loseman, running in an earlier heat, ran 15:08, closing the final 400 meters incredibly fast in his return to the track. Rumsey continued his track campaign the following week placing 5th at the SLU Invitational running 4:00 for 1500 meters, and Jon Koch added to the 5K PRs, running 15:33. Stepping up to the distance of the

group, Jon Yoch placed 13th in the Go Marathon running 2:52:34. Yoch has been on a marathon hot streak and continued his recent success on the challenging local course. Travis Lavin represented the track club well at the Indiana Trail 100 Mile. In his first attempt at the distance, he hung with the lead pack for 68 miles before an injury forced him to remove himself from the race. Our friends at Race STL will certainly have him back on his feet soon. He walks away with his head held high and hungry for another try at the long race. The Premier caps off April with Stults and Loseman competing in the River to River Relay based in the southern Illinois. Together, with six of their former college teammates, they captured the overall team title. All in all, we’ve seen a lot of personal bests, a lot of improvement, and had quite a bit of fun trying to get better. As the weather gets nicer, I’d expect to see the solid running continue from team. – Daniel Stults

Ask Styles!

What do you think about doubles?

Q: Hey Styles, I’m looking to increase my mileage while keeping a rest day each week. What are your thoughts on doubles? – Carissa L.

of wet wipes to races. I will stick the baggie in my pocket in the event of emergency, then prior to the race I will throw it in the trash if it goes unused. I guess that’s being wasteful, but nothing is worse than waiting what seems like an eternity for a porta-potty then finding out there is no TP inside. Doing the “spare a square” isn’t that easy in those things.

A: Double your pleasure, double the fun… dadada. I am a big fan of the double, it allows me to build up mileage while juggling a busy schedule. If you are just starting out, I would start slow. For your first double I would recommend the second run be shorter and Q: Hey Styles, headband or visor? – easier than the first one of that day. Also, Matt W. make sure you take in enough calories and fluid before the run, as this will be A: Personally, I would go visor, especially new for your body. If possible, have runif there is sun. I don’t think I have face ning buddies join you for one or both. or head shape to pull off the headband. They can certainly help keep you motiHowever, one of my fastest running vated and accountable on that second buddies rocks the headband, so maybe run. Finally, listen to your body, as douthere is something to it. I would say test bling is not for everyone. If you enjoy it out both in a race, whichever gets you The one and only and your body does as well, then go ahead the best result, then you have your answer. Mr. Styles. and add more to the schedule. Whatever way you go, be sure to never wash it so all other runners stay away from you. Q: Hey Styles, do you carry TP in a marathon? Roger B. Disclaimer: Styles is not a professional. He is a just a guy that likes to run… every day… sometimes twice. For A: Great question Roger. I don’t carry during, but professional help, please contact a running coach, local I have made a habit of taking a small baggie full running store, physician, and of course the Google.

We want to hear from you! Tell us about your accomplishments. Whether it’s your first 5k or a marathon PR, we want to know about it! Submit race recaps and photos to editor@stlouistrackclub.com

Minutes Replacement board member Justin was in attendance. The transition to the new treasurer was discussed. Plans for the GO! expo are under way.
