President’s Column
Snow couldn’t put a damper on annual Banquet St. Louis Track Club Members, What a turnout at the SLTC Annual Banquet! Old Man Winter could not stop a dedicated group of runners from attending a great celebration. The Banquet has become one of my favorite SLTC events. It truly is an honor for SLTC to put on an event to recognize the great Cross Country Athletes, Track Club Volunteers, Race Directors, and Board/Staff. Congratulations to all the athletes, volunteers, and award winners. Additionally, congratulations and thank you to the many coaches dedicating their time to developing these young athletes. The best part of the evening is hearing the coaches talk about not only the running accomplishments of the athletes, but also the great things they are accomplishing in the classroom and as people. And, okay, I’ll admit it, as a Lafayette High School and St. Louis University grad, it was pretty awesome to see the accomplishments of my alma mater and hear about the number of runners attending SLU to
run for the Billikens! I look forward to following many of the seniors in their college careers, and the Pac 10 should be exciting with Hannah and Sophia heading out West! I also look forward to seeing the underclassmen back at the banquet again next year! As the Banquet wrapped up and the trek home in the snow began, I could not help but think about the irony of the snowfall. While I was dreading the drive home in the snow, how great would it have been if everyone had thrown on some sneakers at the end of the night to go for a run in the snow? Good luck to the young athletes preparing for their track season and those training for a spring race! Special shout-out to Rae Mohrmann as she is prepares to complete her 100th marathon at the Go! St. Louis Marathon in April. Mike Huelsmann, President St. Louis Track Club, est. 1970

Member Profile: Michael Lewis Name/age: Michael Lewis, 41 Born in: Houston, Texas Occupation: Executive Family: None locally Why you started running: I raced bicycles as a teen, but wanted something new. One night during my freshman year in college, I went to the running track and ran a mile in 5:30... almost effortlessly. I have been hooked ever since. Isn’t running a blessing? Running since: 1991 SLTC member since: 2015 How you learned about the club: I learned of SLTC through registration for the 2014-2015 Frostbite series. Mileage: 40-70 mpw, usually. Favorite place to run: Forest Park, Scott AFB, MetroLink trail. Shoes: Asics Gel Hyperspeed flats, and New Balance 890s. Favorite equipment: My trusty old Garmin Forerunner 305 is my favorite running gadget. During long runs, Gu and water are my favorite. Favorite running food: Pork chops, rice, and corn on the cob are always a hit the night before a race and have never left me unhappy on race day! Chocolate milk after a long run. What’s on you iPod: I don’t own an iPod (but am taking donations!!) Proudest performance: This one is a tossup between my fastest unofficial 1.5 mile run (8:03 in training) and my first sub-5-minute mile (4:57, at age 37!) Favorite SLTC event: Frostbite... so far! What do you like about the club: What’s not to like?!
Favorite restaurant: I’m kinda new to the area and am open to experiencing new places. :-) So far, the Forest Perk cafe is probably my fave, LOL. It is right there and ready after a long morning run at Forest Park! Favorite movie: St. Ralph Favorite book: Boring guy alert: the Bible is my favorite book. What else should we know about you?: I’m single and looking for a faithful and happy runner girl to share this wonderful sport with! And, although racing is fun, I *love* longdistance relays. Favorite was Sunset to Sunrise (across Florida) in 2011.

Ask Styles!
How should I start strength training? Q: Hey Styles, I know strength training is important to avoiding injuries. How can I incorporate into my running routine? – Sarah S. A: You are correct Sarah, strength training can be a great tool to complement your running. I know most of us are strapped for time as it is, and throwing something else on the plate might be tough. I would try to incorporate some easy exercise into your daily routine, maybe right before you go to sleep or when you wake up in the morning. Maybe start with sit-ups, planks, push-ups, etc. I am no expert, so you might want to do some more research on other exercises that might be a good fit for you and your goals.
Sly Stallone for his work in “Rocky” and, of course, “Rambo”; Tom Hanks for “Forest Gump,” or even the late Ian Charleson for his role as Eric Liddell in “Chariots of Fire.” I am sure there are a ton of others that would do a great job, but the one I think would be most fitting would be Jerry. That’s right, Jerry Seinfeld. If you have never seen “The Race” episode, head to YouTube now. Jerry has the charisma of Styles and hidden running talent with a knack for winning as seen in the episode. I can see it now, Jerry playing Styles overcomes adversity throughout the film to one day shout, “I choose to run” at the starting line. Q: Hey Styles, what color is the dress? – Mark S.
Q: Hey Styles, there seems to be a The one and only A: Haha, what dress? I think I saw white lot of running-related movies out now, who would play Styles on the big Mr. Styles. and gold but that was so last week. Also, screen? - Mike D. if you have seen my running attire, you might think I’m color-blind, so please take what I saw A: Wow, this is awesome! The last movie I saw in with a grain of salt. a theater was the night before a trail marathon in Indiana with a friend, almost 2 ½ years ago. Disclaimer: Styles is not a professional. He is a just a guy that I need to get out more. There are a lot of really likes to run… every day… sometimes twice. For professional deserving candidates out there worthy of the help, please contact a running coach, local running store, role of Styles. A few that come to mind would be physician, and of course the Google. February Minutes Summary Details of the banquet were covered. The Frostbite Series was reviewed. The first planning meeting for the Half marathon is scheduled. The new website will be ready to launch soon. Schlafly will again be a corporate wellness partner for 2015. Ideas for a spring event were discussed. SLTC will sponsor a round in a trivia night for Runner Aitken. Danny Stults is taking over as treasurer. Team SLTC Congratulations to 2014 Team SLTC Top Mileage winners Gabriel Sison, Rae Mohrmann, Mariana Salinas, and Thad
Niemann! Awards and gift certificates were presented at the annual awards banquet, plus all Team SLTC participants received a limited edition t shirt. If you’d like to be in the running for 2015 prizes and awards, check out the new Team SLTC info page and submit your results. Other Announcements Keep a lookout for more info on the Go! St. Louis expo! The SLTC will have a booth at the expo with awesome team merchandise and race registration for future events. The Club will also need volunteers, so it’s a great opportunity to give back to the running community!

Will Run for Food
Lean meatballs pack protein punch
Every now and then, I feel like I need something a little more special than plain old spaghetti before a long run or race. Sure, some meat sauce or veggie marinara is good, but sometimes I want something that feels a bit fancier and more decadent. On those occasions, these meatballs make a great addition to almost any pasta dish. They’re also delicious on a heaping bed of greens with some Parmesan cheese and Italian dressing, and they’re especially good as the filling of a meatball sub! Using lean ground beef or turkey helps get you plenty of lean protein, and the addition of flax meal instead of bread crumbs adds fiber and a nice crunch. You can make 10 to 12 large meatballs, but I prefer to roll them into 30 to 35 smaller portions. All measurements are by weight. Ingredients: •Lean ground beef - 1 lb •Flax Seed Meal - 2 oz
•Eggs - 4 •Half and Half - 2-4 oz •Romano cheese - 6 oz •Yellow Onion - 3 ounces diced •Garlic - 4 oz •Fresh Basil - 2 oz •Dried Parsley - 2 TBLS Directions: 1. Dice yellow onion into fine bits. 2. Chop Basil into as fine of pieces as possible. 3. Preheat oven to 350 F. 4. Mix all ingredients in a large bowl. 5. Grease a baking sheet with olive oil. 6. Compact meatballs into roughly golf ball sized balls. 7. Cook in preheated oven until meatballs are done, roughly 30-35 minutes. Note: Breadcrumbs can be used instead of flax meal. -Sallie Story (Adapted from the Food Network)
